The Cornerstone Award is intended to honor a business, organization, group, or individual who strengthens our community and makes us proud to live, work, and play here by demonstrating the characteristics and values we hold most dear. Although Crunch Pak is nationally known, they truly recognize the value of building a brand with community and family values intact. Dan Carr and Candy Mecham are a living definition of what a great partnership is. As owners of the Visconti family of businesses, they started a revolution in authentic old world fare in 1985 when Visconti’s of Wenatchee opened. Then they opened Visconti’s of Leavenworth in 1999. Then it was Via Dolce Gelato in ‘05, Cured by Visconti in ’08, The Leavenworth Sausage Garten in 2011, and of course their newest ventures: Fire (pizza, wine, brats and beer, salads and small plates) and Ice (authentic Italian style gelato, crepes and coffee) located in Pybus Public Market, in Wenatchee, which they opened just last year. Clearly they are a duo that knows how to get things done! They donate more than $50,000 dollars and 10,000 pounds of sliced apples to community groups and organizations every year. We are proud to have Crunch Pak in our community! The Junior Service League of Wenatchee has been influencing and impacting lives in our community since 2008. These women, all 150 of them, are working together to bring hope and prosperity to homeless women and children in our community. Their membership spans many generations and together they serve our community by coordinating many philanthropic events. The resources raised through these efforts go to support other organizations in our community who share a common mission of serving women and children in need. 1 2 NON-PROFIT OF THE YEAR LEGACY AWARD CHELAN-DOUGLAS LAND TRUST WILFRED AND KATHY WOODS The Non-Profit of the Year Award honors that organization that sets a high standard for quality, and demonstrates effective strategy, execution and community impact. Together, the Woodses earned the Legacy honor primarily for their wide-ranging support of and involvement in regional arts for more than half a century. The Chelan-Douglas Land Trust (CDLT) is built on volunteers; hundreds of hours each year are contributed by their membership on projects that benefit our community. They are known for working collaboratively with others to achieve consensus results by engaging people and entities with an attitude of respect for different viewpoints. The short list of their arts accomplishments includes development of the Woods House Conservatory of Music, leadership in fundraising and building the Wenatchee Performing Arts Center, help in launching the Icicle Center for the Arts, encouragement in developing The Grove recital hall at Wenatchee Valley College and continued funding — upwards of $40,000 per year — in support of music and arts education and performance through the Woods Family Music and Arts Fund. The Chelan-Douglas Land Trust has accomplished significant results on behalf of our community: creating the Jacobsen Preserve, developing the Foothills trails, working with the City of Wenatchee to acquire Saddle Rock as a City park, and most recently preserving the Wenatchee Foothills. Few non-profit organizations attempt to raise more than $8 million at a single time. Few undertake a campaign that will impact lives 50, 70, 100 years into the future. In an effort that wrapped up this past December, the Chelan-Douglas Land Trust did both, raising $8.6 million--$500,000 more than the original goal. The District currently enrolls about 5,600 students in grades K-12. Students are housed in ten buildings; five elementary schools, two intermediate schools, one junior high school, one high school , and one alternative education facility. Wenatchee School District has connected with the community to make education personal and promote a local culture that values learning and is committed to success for all. Our purpose is preparing students with the knowledge and skills for life in the 21st Century. With the help of community leaders and over 4000 people who live, work or study in Wenatchee, the District launched Wenatchee Learns — an initiative aimed at developing a common vision for the future of local learning. We support that vision through: The community supported a facility improvement bond in 2010 which brought $74 million to our district, significantly remodeling Grant Elementary, Sterling Intermediate and Eastmont High School. The District employs 330 certificated and 330 classified personnel with minimal employee turnover. The Great Recession didn’t hit the Wenatchee area as hard as many parts of the State due to the strong fruit industry in North Central Washington which is still in a growth mode. Taking advantage of the riches of our local foods and our picturesque waterfront, the 25,000 square foot Pybus Public Market opened in 2013. The $11 Million public private partnership has created a fantastic community asset where small business and the Wenatchee Valley Farmer’s Market can showcase our fine local foods. The Public Market has provided the impetus for development of a Boutique Hotel on the neighboring property which is expected to be constructed in 2014. Furthermore, a 312 unit multifamily development with mixed use live - work spaces is under construction only a short fifteen minute walk along the Apple Capital Loop Trail to the Public Market. Residential building permit activity is also beginning to pick up as the Wenatchee Valley is a great lure to those seeking an active living life style. The Wenatchee area is only a 2 1/2 hour drive away from Seattle or a short flight over the beautiful Cascade Mountains. This proximity to Seattle provides a great opportunity for businesses to locate in a outdoor recreation mecca with abundant sunshine and still serve clients and industries in the Seattle Metro area. In addition, the Wenatchee Valley is a hub for all of North Central Washington serving a population base of over 250,000 people as well as Southern British Columbia. New homes are built to suit the varying needs of our region’s residents— spec homes, custom homes and condominiums—while historic properties are popular as well. While the building industry prospers, the real estate industry and mortgage brokers have worked in tandem to make sure that residents find the properties best for their family. Contact the NCW Association of Realtors by visiting www.ncwar.com or visit the North Central Home Builders Association by visiting www.nchba.cc. Or, contact the real estate professional of your choice for industry information. Home Building, Real Estate & Finance Locally, there are a growing number of wineries producing incredible wines distributed nation-wide. The industry is comprised of growers, agricultural workers, wine-makers, tourist destination tasting rooms, wholesale distributors and retailers. Wines produced in the Wenatchee Valley have been recognized in national publications such as the Wine Spectator, Gourmet and Sunset Magazine. Learn more about our local wineries by visiting www. wenatcheewines.com or www.cascadvalleywinecountry.com The housing market in the Wenatchee Valley led the nation in appreciation in 2007 and early 2008. While activity has slowed, building activity continues. The industry includes contractors, subcontractors, designers, real estate agents, title insurance and escrow, banks and mortgage brokerage firms, to name a few. The Government or Public Services sector is the largest industry by gross wages paid and includes such employers as Wenatchee-Okanogan Nation Forest Service, our PUD’s, Department of Natural Resources, Washington State University Tree – Fruit, Cities, Counties School Districts, Colleges, Washington State Department of Transportation and many more. The Wenatchee area serves as a hub for local, state and federal services. 24 BUSINESS Agriculture Fruit commodities including apples, pears, cherries, peaches and apricots are locally grown and distributed around the globe, as well as wheat, barley and rye from outlying communities. The industry supports agricultural workers, growing operations, packaging facilities, brokerage firms and shipping via truck and rail. For more information, visit www.wenatchee.org. Guests from throughout the US can be found sampling grapes or tasting wines while touring locally owned vineyards. They can also be found at family-owned petting farms and specialty gift shops that were once simple roadside fruit stands.
