Gyro Replacement Instructions for
TracVision C3/R5
®
The following instructions explain how to replace the gyro in a
TracVision C3/R5.
Estimated Time to Complete:
The main PCB is static-sensitive.
Ensure that you take the necessary
grounding precautions before
handling.

Gyros are sensitive to shock. Handle
the gyro carefully to avoid damage.

PC with the latest version of the KVH Flash Update Wizard
installed

Replace the Gyro
Before servicing the antenna unit,
turn off the antenna and disconnect
vehicle/vessel power. Ensure power
is removed from both the antenna
and the receiver(s) or multiswitch
connected to RF1 and RF2.
1. Turn off the antenna and remove the appropriate
vehicle/vessel fuse to disconnect power. Ensure
power is removed from both the antenna and the
receiver(s) or multiswitch connected to RF1 and
RF2.
2. Remove the eight screws securing the radome.
Remove the radome and set it aside in a safe place.

Be careful not to drop any of the
small screws inside the mechanism.
If a screw is lost within the
baseplate, it must be retrieved to
avoid causing any damage when the
unit rotates.

3. Locate the elevation motor shaft at the rear of the
reflector.

4. Using an 11/32" open-end wrench, loosen the
elevation motor shaft nut, but do not remove it.

5. Rotate the elevation motor shaft counterclockwise
until it is fully retracted, as shown below. Then
using a Phillips-head screwdriver, remove the four
screws from the main PCB cover.

6. Gently remove the main PCB cover, ensuring no
cables are damaged by the edges of the cover.

When removing the main PCB cover,
ensure that no cables are damaged
or pinched by the PCB cover edges.

7. Disconnect the gyro cable connector from the main
PCB.

8. Remove the two screws securing the gyro to the
gyro housing.

9. Gently remove the gyro and gyro cable, ensuring no
cables are dislodged from the main PCB.

10. Insert the new gyro and gyro cable into the gyro
housing. Then secure the gyro with the two gyro
screws that you removed earlier. Be sure to route
the gyro cable through the gyro housing and under
the RF cable as shown below.

11. Connect the gyro cable connector to the main PCB.

When replacing the main PCB cover,
ensure that no cables are damaged
or pinched by the PCB cover edges.
12. Gently replace main PCB cover, ensuring no cables
are damaged by the edges of the cover. Then using
a Phillips-head screwdriver, secure the main PCB
cover using the four screws that you removed
earlier.

Be sure to apply a small amount of
the supplied Loctite threadlocker to
the threads of the elevation motor
shaft nut.

13. Apply a small amount of the supplied Loctite
threadlocker to the threads of the elevation motor
shaft nut.

14. Extend the elevation motor shaft by rotating it
clockwise, then insert the motor shaft into the
connecting rod.

15. Using an 11/32" open-end wrench, tighten the
elevation motor shaft nut.
16. Reinstall the radome. Then replace the vehicle/
vessel fuse that you removed earlier and connect
power to the antenna and receiver.

Configure the New Gyro
The new gyro now needs to be configured. The following
instructions explain how to configure the new gyro. This
procedure requires a PC with the KVH Flash Update Wizard
installed.
The Flash Update Wizard is
available to KVH-authorized dealers
through the KVH Partner Portal at
www.kvh.com/partners.
1. Connect one end of a PC serial data cable to the DB9
maintenance port, located on the switchplate.
Connect the other end of the data cable to the serial
port on your PC.

DB9 serial COM port, you can use

2. Double-click the KVH Flash Update Wizard
shortcut on your PC’s desktop to start the Flash
Update Wizard.
You do not need to flash the antenna to configure the new
gyro; simply enter commands in the Flash Update
Wizard’s "TracVision Antenna Comms" window.

3. Set the switchplate’s POWER switch to the ON (up)
position, then turn on the receiver(s). Wait one
minute for system startup.
4. Type HALT then press Enter.
5. Type DEBUGON then press Enter.

6. Type =LSTEST to begin the limit switch test. Wait
for the test to pass or fail. If the test fails, contact
KVH Technical Support.
7. Type =CALGYRO then press Enter. If a “Scale
factor out of range - bad gyro” message appears,
contact KVH Technical Support.
8. The antenna will restart; wait one minute for the
antenna to initialize.
9. Type ZAP then press Enter to restart the antenna.
The gyro replacement process is complete! Be sure to return the
old gyro to KVH.

IMPORTANT!
Before returning the gyro, be sure
to obtain an RMA number from
KVH’s Technical Support and
write the number clearly on the
outside of the box. Shipments
received without an RMA number
will be returned to you at your
expense.
