THE VISITORS Take a close look at the
oppositiOn. They have an ad
vantage your team will have
to overcome.
They all left school to get on
a bus. They probably ate to
gether somewhere en route.
By now they've already spent
several of the most critical
pre-game hours together, as
a team. So while they may
be a little stiff from the ride,
psychologically they're very
much together. And they're
ready to prove it.
they hit the locker room,
they'vt)negated most of their
natural home team advan
tage. So Sambo's is offering
a very strategic alternative.
The Sambo's Training Table.
Specially prepared high pro
tein or high carbohydrate
meals, served in a private
room at prices that won't
break the bank. It gives your
team an opportunity to feel
like a team hours before the
game. So they can think it
over, talk it over and plan
together how to win it.
Home teams aren't always as
organized. When they don't If you're a player, be sure
get together as a team until your coach knows about the
Sambo's Training Table pro
gram. If you're a coach ,
contact your nearest Sambo's
for a Training Table Menu
and Directory of all our lo
cations. And if you're a fan,
just sit back and enjoy the
TRAINING
results.

SANTA BARBARA ATHLETIC ROUND TABLE
In the spring of 196'8 two of Santa Barbara's leading sports en
thusiasts, Jerry Harwin and Caesar Uyesaka, recognizing the need for
an organization dedicated to the assistance and recognition of aU
sporting activities and athletes in the greater Santa Barbara area,
decided on the formation of such an organization. During a p eriod of
just three months the Round Table grew to an astounding membership
of over 300 citizens also dedicated to the same goals and ideals.
With funds derived from dues, contributions and fund-raising
events the Round Table has contributed over $14,000 to help support
sports in the area. Besides its assi~tance to sports, athletes and athletic
groups, the Round Table through the efforts of its second president,
Bill Bertka, estab lished the highly successful and popular weekly "Press
Luncheons" that bring news media, prominent athletic personalities,
coaches, athletes, and interested supporters toqether. These luncheons
are presided over by the present president of the Round Table.

The Round Table also established the Annual HaU of Fame Ban
quet, honoring the outstanding athletes of the year and inducting new
members into the Athletic Hall of Fame.
Today, the Round Table numbers nearly 300 members with yearly
dues of only $5.00 and has beccome the leading organization in t.he
community for the promotion and publicity of all sporting events and
assistance to all sports in general.
We commend all the Santa Barbara area athletes and
coaches for their fine accomplishments and wis h all
of you the best in your future endeavors.

DINNER
PRESENTATION OF AWARDS
This annual Santa Barbara Athletic Hall of Fame banquet dramatizes the far-reaching impact of
sports on our community.
Look around you at the award winners. They are young and old, rich and poor, big and small,
professional and amateur. They have one thing in common. All are athletes.
Thanks to our Special Olympics, mentally retarded children and adults are also part of our
community of athletes. They are just like all the athletes here in their fundamental pursuit
of excellence in sports. Every year they practice and prepare for their annual competition,
and every year their performances improve.
The 1975 Santa Barbara County Special Olympics were held May 3 at UCSB. Some 350 mentally
retarded individuals participated in the swimming and track meets, which for some may lead to
state and national games.
On May 3, every participant who ran or swam a race, who jumped or threw a baseba11, felt a
sense of achievement. Instilling that positive experience is the purpose of the Special
Olympics.
The Special Olympics began under the nationwide sponsorship of the Joseph P. Kennedy Jr.
Foundation in 1968. There were 1,000 menta11y retarded children in the first year's program.
Now there are nearly 500,000 Special Olympians competing in over 2,500 meets throughout
Canada and France.
The fantastic growth of the Special Olympics shows that its ma i n idea has caught on--the idea
that athletics is not just a physical outlet for the mentally retarded, but it also enhances
their psychological and attitudinal growth. Nobody who has seen a Special Olympics meet can
deny it.
It has taken some hard work by loving people to illuminate and spread that idea. The core of
the Special Olympics organization is volunteer help. Many selfless volunteers made the
Santa Barbara County meets a success--from those who slaved on the main committee, to every
body who took the time to show up on tha~ special day to cheer and applaud the wondrous
events that unfolded.

SB~S 1975 DON soccer team captured the CIF championship
agaInst South Torrance 4-1. Front row, left to right: Tom
Guzman, Agustin Vasquez, Jose Adame, Gus Guzman, David
Del'Arbre, Rudy Ybarra, Jose Zuniga, Eddie Sanchez. Back
row: Phil Bugay, Peter Hartmann, Trent Smith, Larry
Goluck, Eric Marcogliese, Peter Guzman, Kent England,
Laur~nce Coleman, Arturo Vallecillo, Mario Cuevas, Miguel
RodrIguez, Miguel Nuno, Lenny Mendoza, Coach Manuel
Garcia.
The SBH5 soccer team
seemed to dominate the North
ern Section of CIF competi
tion; and they carried that
with them as they entered the
CIF Finals against South Tor
rance in LA and came out
winners 4-1 with an overall
record of 25-0-1 and their first
championship in four years.
"We knew South Torrance's
style as well as they knew ours,"
commented head Coach Man
uel Garcia. "50 it was just a
matter of playing well on a dry
field and under great pres
sure/' All three Guzman brothers
Tom, Gus, and Peter alon~
with their first cousin R.udy
Ybarra scored for the Dons.
Tom Guzman scored first on
a 20 yard shot after only a
minute of play. "My brother
Gus centered the ball and it
bounced off of one of their
fullbacks," said Tom. uI took
it, faked and kicked."
Peter, a junior, raised the
score to 2-0 with a penalty kick
in the second half.
Ybarra then scored a minute
later on a second effort. Spart
ans goalie David Wyman stop
ped his first shot but couldn't
hang on to the ball, and Rudy
slammed it in again.
The youngest of the Guz
man's, Gus a sophomore scored
the remaining goal on a boom·
ing kick that hit the upper left
corner of the goal.
Other outstanding players
contributing to the victory
were goalie Lenny Mendoza
who made some spectacular
saves, forward Jose Zuniga,
who set up Ybarra's goal, and
fullback David DelArbe.
"We should have a good
season next year, with five
returning lettermen and a JV
squad that was undefeated this
year," commented Coach
Garcia.
Five starters from the DODS
championship team will re
turn next year. Forwards Gus
Guzman and Rudy Ybarra,
halfback, Peter Guzman and
fullbacks Jose Adame and
Mario Cuevas.
.. "It's your money. We never forget that."

MASTERS COMPETIT ION There has been a growing in t erest devel
oping in the "Masters" Athlet ics program
during the past f ew years locally as well
as nation-wide. Men and women once con
sidered "over the hill" now face a new
challenge competing in various sports;
track, swimming, tennis, badminton,
handball, raquet ball, to name a few.
These have been attracting large numbers
of athletes from 25 to 80 years of age.
The Senior Olympics now offers annual
competition in 35 sports. The Santa
Barbara Swim Club has a number of swim
mers participating in many meets includ
ing an annual S.P.A.A.U. Swim Meet that
is scheduled for Santa Barbara in July.
Club West and the S.B. Recreation Div.
will stage an annual Masters Track and
Field Meet this year, Oct. 4, at the
U.C.S.B. Track. Anyone interested in participating may
call Russ Hargreaves at 965-3813.
