Athlete of the Month
In February of2002, the Round Table, the
Boys and Girls Club and the Santa Barbara
community at large suffered a great loss
with the death ofJane O'Brien.
Jane was also involved with the United
Way and organized the Olympic Torch
ceremony for them in 1996.
Jane 0 'Brien
At Jane's memorial service, Round Table
Chairman Larry Crandell was the lead
speaker honoring her. Jane was described as a former Board Member, a
Regal Knight and a tireless worker who gave her all to the causes she
believed in. "Jane personified 'doing your best'," Larry Crandell praised.
"I t amazed me that she inspired so many people by doing the unglamorous
things. She would rather be behind the camera than in front ofi t. Jane got
satisfaction and joy from everyone contributing to a job well done."
"For us who have had the privilege to work with her, she brought the
determination and commitment to supporting athletics that you would
wish for in the performan ce of athletes. If there was no d oor, sh wo uld
be the fi rst one to build the doorway. That's the ki nd of person she was.
We will miss her im mensely."
Welcome
Welcome to the Thirty-Fifth Annual Santa Barbara Athletic Round
Table H all of Fame Banquet.
I am proud to report to you that we continue our tradition of honoring
local men and women athletes. D uring the course of the school year, we
have held thirty-three luncheons at which we acknowledged over one
thousand student athletes, sixty-six Athletes of the Week, ten Scholar
Athletes of the Year, seven Special Olympic athletes and eight Sports
Perso ns of the month . The Round T able underwrites the cost for the
lunches and trophies to honor these fine students.
Another important function of the Round Table is to make financial
grants to deserving individuals and organizations. These groups and
individuals represent the mission of the Round Table . This year we
have contributed to: Westside Boys and Girls Club, Women 's D ay in
Sports, Salt Lake 2002 Olympic Torch Relay, Youth Football League
Super Bowl, UCSB Student Referendum for New Athletic Facilities,
Founders Scholarship, Jane O ' Brien Scholarship, Field of Dreams/
Goleta South Little League, Elings Park Foundation, Santa Barbara
Storm Baseball Team, George Washington Carver Scholarship Club and
Caesar Uyesaka Stadium.
Tonight we rekindle the spirit of all the past athletes and coaches, here
in the Hall ofFame. It is a hall, it is a shrine, and it is a very special place
where we come to honor a few of our best athletes and coaches. The
accomplishments of these men and women are unique and will not be
forgotten.

Round T able's Board of Directors recognized the need to honor
those students who are not only successful athlete, but w ho also m aintain

T he Athletic Round Table feels that the significance of this award goes
beyond recognizing individual students who have outs tanding academic

possible for a student to participate in ath letics and still maintain
outstanding academic ach ievemen t. We are proud to present the 2001-2002

Harry's Plaza Cafe was the site of the Round Table's flrsr p ress

standing-room only crowds.
Funds are distributed according to need. The Round Table is proud
to hel p student-athletes at all levels compete in events th ey would
otherwise not have been able to attend. With continued community

Richard S. Olmstead
Special A chievement
Dick Olmstead is called the Father of the Tri-County
sports officials. Dick and his wife Jackie moved to
Carpinteria in 1944. Athletics were an important
part of Dick's life, and he began volunteering with
Carpinteria's high school football program.
Dick's career with the Pacific Telelphone company
lasted thirty seven years. His occupation allowed him
to become involved with the city he loved and called
home. Whether he volunteered as a lifeguard, a
fireman, an ambulance driver, a fund raiser for the
Lions Club, a Scout Master or track official for
the Russell Cup, he was always professional and
prepared.
Dick's passion for officiating turned into a lifelong
hobby. For 37 years, Dick could be seen with his
trusty whistle, big voice and watchful eye. His fair
interpretation of the rules always placed him in the
thick o f action during Tri-C ounty Chamiponsh ip
football and basketball games.
Dick was the consummate professional in his
approach to officiating. He was always on time, knew
the rules, and believed in fair play and good sportsmanship. In his own words: "The student-athletes
and coaches have worked hard all week long for this
contest, and lowe it to the athletes and coaches to
give them my best effort." Dick mentored a number
of local officials who today are officiating major
college sporting events. His support, leadership and
compassion towards young officials will always be
appreciated by his officiating colleagues.
Due to his outstanding service and dedication to
inter-scholastic athletics in the Tri-Counties and
Southern California, Dick was inducted into the
California Interscholastic Federation Hall of Fame in
1986. If the measure of a man's life is that of his deeds,
then the distance to describe Richard Olmstead's
contribu tions to Tri-County officials has not yet been
discovered.
Special
Recognition
David Edelman, Director of Public Affairs for Cox Communications,
deserves a standing ovation from this community and SBART. We can
only imagine the thrill young people experience when viewing their
moment of honor on local television. Without the help of David and his
staff, we could not provide this level of acknowledgement.
Gerry Fall Sports Director of KEYT- TV Channel 3, has earned our
gratitude for all he does to honor athletes . His extra effortS in producing
videos of the highlights of each year's sports events demonstrate his
commitment to the young athlete. We are fortunate to have such an
enthusiastic sports reporter keeping score.
Rdndy Lee, Sports Director of KEYT Rddio, does a remarkable job of
recognizing our area's student-athletes and teams on his radio spons
reports. Randy also provides the introductions this evening for each of our
high school, college and open Athletes of the Year.

DEBBIE FOLEY
W ith every thriving organizatio n, success ca n us ually be traced back to
one individual whose leadership and dedicatio n were instru mental in its
quest to achieve excellence. Debbie Foley's dedication and untiring
commitment to youth soccer in Santa Barbara were ins trumental in
regional soccer attaining the level of excellence seen today. H er direction
and organization were key in providing the foundation of the American
Youth Soccer Organization in the Santa Barbara region.
D uring Debbie's four years as AYSO Commissioner, she saw the

the registra tion process was streamli ned, participant databases were
computerized, fund -raising goals were established and accomplished
and AYSO was moved fro m 12 playing sites to 1 location at UCSB .
Debbie started the first local soccer tOurnament (now over 200 teams).
Debbie feels that "you meet the best people" when volun teering for
youth athletics. She served for th ree years as the President of the C harger
Association at Dos Pueblos and currently serv s as the T ourname nt
DirectOr for the Futbol Club of Santa Barbara. She is an active member
of the Santa Barbara Area Soccer Coalition. She continues to work on
establishing open spaces fo r youth athletic programs. Her commitment
to youth athletics is a family thing, as her h usband and children are active

Jim St. Clair
Special Achievement
As corny as ,it may sound, Jim St. Clair is with us in
spirit at this 35th annual Hall of Fame Banquet.
W hen St. C lair gOt involved in an activity, it became
more fun because of h is h igh spiri ts. H e even m ade
D os Pueblos High 's football players eager to practice.
"H e was always a jo lly m an, always positive, " said Jeff
Uyesaka, who was coached by St. C lair. "H e helped
us have a good time while he taught us how to play the
game. W ith the coaches we had, yo u looked fo rward
. to going o ut there ."
St. C lair was a b usinessm an who do nated his tim e to
local sports. He started coaching in the Youth Football
League. Before he got involved , he made sure that the
emphasis was on the kids' havi ng fu n.
When local schools experienced a shortage of coaches,
St. C lair helped out at Dos Pueblos. He coached the
C hargers fresh ma n football team and later becam e a
varsity assistant. St. Clair mad e his m ark in Santa
Barbara as a football player in the late ' 50s . He was a
record -setting quarterback at UCSB. He then worked
as a bowli ng alley manager and ro lled several 30 0
games.
One of his last gigs was as a volunteer bowlin g
instructo r for the blind. He shared the joy with h is
students at the sou nd of all th pins falling down.
Jim also faced the cancer that took his life earlier this
year wi th high spirits. He got out of his bed at the
Seren ity House hospice center and m ade an
appearance at a football practice as the DP Chargers
prepared fo r a CIF playoff game. They gave hi m an
autograp hed game ball. And wi th much appreciation,
the Round Table gives Jim St. Clair its highest honor

MARK FRENCH
When M ark French graduated fro m U CSB in 1973, he asp ired to be a
baseball coach. If yo u had told him he wo uld retu rn to Santa Barbara 14
years later to coach the G aucho women 's baske tball team, he would h ave
tho ught yo u were nuts. Women's SpOrts were, at best, a curiosity d uri ng
his college years. Bur changes had begun sweeping through in tercollegia te
athletics, prompted in part by the passage oET ide IX in 1972. W hile many
of his pee rs resisted the movement, French became one of its leaders.
French took a job coaching women's basketball at the University of the
Pacific in 1979 because he needed the money. He was also the pitching
coach for U OP's baseball team. He'll always remember the first time he
watched a women's basketball game - he was one of the coaches. T wo
years later, French resigned from his baseball position because he fel t his
women's team deserved his full-time energy and attention.
UCS B had a downtrodden women's basketball program wh en French
began coaching the G auchos in the 1987-88 season. In his fourth year,
they had a winning season. In his fifth, they won their first Big West
champio nsh ip and reached the NCAA T ournament for the first time.
T hey made their seventh ap pea rance in the" Big Dance" this past year,
and French passed two milestones with his 300th victory at U CSB an d
400th of his career. His team's win ning ways boosted the commu nity's
follow ing of the G auchos. Next to Stanford , they have the top drawing
women's college basketb all team in C alifornia. H is p rogram has grad uated
98 percent of its student-athletes and has produced more Big Wes t
scholar-athletes than any o ther team.

Bill Shields
Coach
The Goleta School Disrrict and the boys and girls
who participated in the Valley Elemen tary League are
lucky that founder Bill Shields learned to bob and
weave at a young age. Bill d id not have a lot of success
as a Pasadena High School basketball player, so he
decided he wanted to try amateur boxing. He was
trained by the legendary blind boxing coach, Canto
Robledo, in Robeledo's backyard gym in Pasadena.
During his boxing tenure, he competed in both
lightweight and wel terweight d ivision tou rnaments.
Bill won weigh t divis ion championships in 4 tournaments. What is remarkable is that he was a fin alist in
every boxi ng tournaments he entered.
Bill graduated from UCSB in 1957 and earned a
Master's Degree from usc in 1962. He was hired by
the Goleta School District in 1957, where he taught
6 rh grade at Cathedral Oaks, drove the school bus and
developed a boys and girls after school athletic program. He organized the Valley Elem ntary League,
where boys and girls teams, coached by fellow teachers
and parents, co mpeted agai nst one ano ther on Satu rday mornings in Goleta. Sportsmanship, fair play
and citizenship were emphasized pre-, d uring, and
post-game. The program was an overnigh t success.
Bill's school won charn pionships in flag football,
basketball, softball; volleyball and track. After 19
years , when the Valley League was no longer I1eeded,
Bill organized and coached noon leagues at Holl ister
and La Patera schools. What was unique was that
these teams were all co-ed.
Bill Shields coached h undreds of boys and girls in all
sports. He was a truly visionary coach by promoting
girls to participate in competi tive sports 15 years
before the implementation of Tide IX. His young
athletes remember his love of sport and his caring
attitude toward athletes of every ability level. Bill
retired from teaching in 1990 and now enjoys watching
his 4 grandchildren play soccer. .. a game they have to

John Gilbert
Outstanding Athlete
As a child, "Lil' Johnny" would rather run than walk,
never turned down a challenge and did not know
what the words, "not big enough," meant. Little only
describes his stature; big was his destiny. At a very
young age, he displayed true athleticism. This spirit
was encouraged by mentors: Bill Van Schaick and
Don Yee. SBHS coaches Sam Cathcart and Mike
Moropoulos cultivated John's talent. In 1960, he led
the Golden Tornados to a CIF AAAA Football Championship and he received All-League honors for his
11.4 yards per carry and rushing over 1000 yards.
In 1963, John was recruited to join the top athletes
with the Southern California Striders Track Club. At
the Amateur Athletic Union Meet in Missouri, John
took second place to Bob Hayes who broke the world
record in the 100 yard dash in 9.1 seconds. John ran
a 9.2 This finish won him a place on the USA Dual
track team. John was now a world-class athlete running in the world's finest track venues. But one of his
fondest memories was not his winning in races, itwas
being asked by "Wilma Rudolph" to hold her seats
during one of her races.
At SBHS in the spring of 1961, John took first place
in the Compton Invitational 100 yard dash with a
time of9.6 seconds. He took first place in the Russell
Cup 100 yard dash with a time of9. 7 seconds, second
place in the CIF Finals 100 yard dash 9.7 seconds and
a third place at the State Meet 100 yard dash at 9.7.
These victories were the precursor to a very successful
track car er where the world was Lil' John ny's stage.
John is now a 24 year resident of Santa Maria, CA.,
working for ITT Industries at VAFB as a senior
Computer Operator. He is a mentor in the Santa
Barbara County Mentor Program. He has inspired
young athletes to train hard, perfect their talents and
achieve their goals. John has been m a rried to his high
school sweetheart, Pauline, for 38 years, and together
they have 4 children and 11 grand child ren .

From enrollment in C ate School to her grad uation in

BOB WILLIAMS
University of California at Santa Barbara
Bob W illiams earned a reputation as a program builder at U C D avis,
eventually coaching the Aggies' basketball team to an NCAA D ivision 2
National championship in 1998. H e didn't take lo ng to make an impact
at UCSB as well. Fresh off h is national tide, he took over a G aucho
program that had endured 5 straight losing seasons, including a 7-19
record in 1998. It took 8 straight defeats to start the 1998-99 season to
turnaround , but Williams did just that, winning 15 of his last 20 games
to win the Big West Conference's Western D ivision tide and earn the
league's Coach of the Year Award. That turnaround was (he biggest in
NCAA basketball that season .
Now 4 seasons into his career at UCS B, Williams had the G auchos taking
a step into completely new territory this spring: A Big West Co nferen ce
Tournament cham pionship. T hey put together a five-game winning
streak at the end of last season and beat C al Poly, UC Irvine and U tah
State at the league tournamenr at the An aheim C onvention C enter to
win their first conference tide in history and an automatic bid to the
NCAA T ourn ament. It was UC SB's first NCAA berth since 1990 and
its 20-1 0 r co rd marked the first 20-win season since 1992 . W illiams also
nearly sho ked the college basketball world in an NCAA first-round
game at Al buq uerque, N .M. last M arch, trailing seventh-ranked Arizona
by just two points with 1:44 remaining. But the Wildcats, who made 32of-42 free throws in the game, hit the ir foul sho ts the rest of the way to
hold off the upstart Gauchos, 86-81. Williams now has a stellar 14-year
college coaching record of 251-152 for a winning percentage of .639.

FRED WARRECKER
Santa Barbara High School
Fred W arrecker beli ves in heroes. Bo th on the baseball fi eld"and in the
classroom. Ulysses, John K nnedy and Mark McGuire have been the
cornerstone of Coach W arrecker's teach ing. Why heroes succeed whi le
others fall shorr is his basic lesson.
As his 30 tn season of coaching varsiry baseball at Santa Barbara High
School winds to a close, Coach Warrecker reflects less on the wins and
losses than on the difference he hopes he has made in the lives of his
players. A recent letter from a player of a decade ago said, You taught us to
respect the game, always practice hard and dream of what might be possible.
T he Dons of recent years have achieved the most success: 3 consecutive
C hannel League Championships and, in 2000, a trip to D0dger stadium
for the ClF title game. T he 1975 team also won the league title anJ others
have advanced to the playoffs.
But the true measure of Coach Warrecker's contribution to SBHS
extends beyond the baseball field. He retired as a classroom teacher earlier
this year, having touched the lives of thousands of students. In his Spo rtS
Li terature and English classes , daily reading was mandatory, but listening
and thi nking we re largely voluntary.
Always demanding, Coach Warrecker set a high bar fo r his players, his
students and himself. We acknowledge his dedication and success. He has
become one of ou r heroes.
