The former Santa Barbara High School volleyball superstar spoke to a packed house of SBART members and supporters as well as the Santa Barbara and Dos Pueblos High School varsity girls’ volleyball teams. The success of Fall Classic was followed in February by the Women and Girls in Sports Luncheon featuring Christa Gannon, a former UCSB basketball star that went on to graduate top of her class from Stanford law school before founding Fresh Lifelines for Youth, a non-profit that works with disadvantaged youth in the San Jose area. Her memorable “TWILIGHT” speech prompted a spontaneous standing ovation from the 400+ young athletes in attendance. Finally, former Westmont and Lakers’ Coach Randy Pfund was the headline speaker for our March Madness event. He kept the audience of rapt SBART benefactors captivated with his “inside sports” stories and Final Four picks! Our Board as well as our volunteers, members and sponsors put their time, energy and funding into this organization because we believe in the importance of sports for the youth of our community. In the Fall, the Santa Barbara and Dos Pueblos girls’ high school volleyball teams clashed in the semi-finals of CIF and Dos Pueblos went on to win the CIF Championship match while the spring brought a CIF Championship to the Dos Pueblos girls water polo team as well as the sensational boys’ soccer CIF Championship match-up between Santa Barbara and Dos Pueblos. Over 8,000 fans watched the Santa Barbara boys’ team edge out Dos Pueblos at UCSB’s Harder Stadium. Meanwhile, Bishop High’s girls’ basketball team won 18 games and advanced to the CIF second round while their boys’ golf team was in contention to win a league championship. Laguna Blanca’s girls’ volleyball team also soared, scoring their eighth consecutive championship in the Condor League and reaching CIF finals before being defeated. In the academic and sportsmanship arena, San Marcos hit a home run coming in on top of the CIF Southern Section Academic Awards where they received the most top-five finishes out of 22 sports. Girls’ swimming, boys’ volleyball and wrestling placed first for the highest cumulative, non-weighted GPAs in their respective sports. The Carpinteria High Warriors achieved accolades in the sportsmanship department, earning the CIF Sportsmanship Award for the Frontier League, while their girls’ golf team won the CIF Academic Team Championship with an un-weighted team GPA of 3.915. In the college arena, SBCC’s women’s volleyball had one of the best seasons in school history with Maria Mayer (San Marcos) earning All-State honors. Their men’s soccer team won its second-straight WSC title under John Sisterson, and women’s basketball was second in the WSC with Coach Sandrine Krul named WSC North coach of the year. UCSB’s athletic success was highlighted by NCAA appearances by men’s basketball, men’s and women’s soccer, women’s volleyball as well as individual appearances by cross country and track and field. They also laid claim to the most scholar-athletes in the Big West Conference. Finally, Westmont men’s cross country won the Golden State Athletic Conference Championship, and women’s basketball reached the Golden State Athletic Conference Championship game. Congratulations to all of our college and high school athletes! We are proud to support you! 2010 The SBART got off to a fast start. Its first organizational meeting was held at Santa Barbara’s East Beach on January 25, 1968. Hundreds of people attended this meeting, and over 200 joined that evening as Charter Members. The SBART’s first annual banquet was held at Santa Barbara City College on June 22, 1968. Through membership dues, contributions, fundraising events and local foundations, the Round Table has raised more than $2 million. Harry’s Plaza Café was the site of the SBART’s first press luncheon held on September 14, 1970. The luncheons, initiated by the new president, Bill Bertka, were similar to a “Monday Morning Quarterback Club.” All area schools were represented by the head coaches of the sports in season. For over four decades the SBART luncheons have been held at Harry’s every Monday, attended by standing-room-only crowds. Since its first meeting back in 1968, the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table has helped thousands of individuals and organizations by raising funds to support their athletic programs. The Round Table is proud to help student-athletes at all levels compete in events they would otherwise not have been able to attend. SBART Founders O ver four decades ago, Jerry Harwin and Caesar Uyesaka sipped coffee at Caesar’s Restaurant, talking about the need for a sports group in Santa Barbara that could help the local athletic community in times of need. After Jerry and Caesar shared a couple more coffee breaks together, the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table was born. Its motto: The advancement and betterment of all sports and athletics in the greater Santa Barbara area. It is with our deepest regards and warmest thanks that we acknowledge and celebrate the vision and hard work of our founders, Caesar Uyesaka, Jerry Harwin and Bill Bertka. 5 Hall Fame 2010 6 Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Hall of Fame Induction Class of 2010 Fess Parker’s DoubleTree Hotel May 24, 2010 Santa Barbara, Calif. 2010 Outstanding Athlete Alan Everest was a standout football, baseball and basketball player at San Marcos High School. Bellefeuille will attend Biola University in the fall to study health sciences. Nicholas Stathopoulos Nicholas Stathopoulos has played baseball his entire life, excelling at the high school level while maintaining high grades in challenging courses. Stathopoulos was the varsity baseball team captain in his senior year and has earned both the team MVP and Coach’s Award in his three-year varsity stint. In his free time, Stathopoulos volunteers as a baseball coach and umpires local Little League games. Stathopoulos will attend Kent State University in the fall to study aviation. He hopes to continue playing baseball in college. SBART Scholarships Meagan Bellefeuille will graduate from Dos Pueblos High School this June with a 4.05 GPA. A distinguished studentathlete, Bellefeuille earned acclaim and praise for her abilities to juggle academics and athletics. In 2009 she was awarded the Scholar Athlete award from Dos Pueblos. 2010 21 2010 College Coach of the Year Past Recipients 1969 1969 1969 1970 1970 1971 1971 1972 1972 1972 1973 1973 1973 1974 1974 1975 1976 1977 1978 1979 1980 1981 1982 1983 1984 1984 1985 1986 1986 1987 1988 1989 1990 1991 1992 1993 1994 1995 1996 1997 1998 1999 2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009 Albert Revis Jim Klein Ted Fish Bob Dinaberg Tom Byron Ed DeLacy Ralph Barkey Bob Dinaberg Ron Mulder Dave Gorrie Les Stevens Russ Carr Ralph Barkey Ed DeLacy Rudy Suwara Gus Mee Bob Dinaberg Ed DeLacy Chet Kammerer Gregg Wilson Pete Snyder Frank Carbajal Bobbie Bonace Al Ferrer Chet Kammerer Frank Carbajal Gregg Wilson Al Ferrer Jean Paul Verhees Mircea Badulescu Jerry Pimm Ken Preston Chet Kammerer Chet Kammerer Mark French Gregg Wilson Chris Russell Mike Giuliano Cathy Sanford Tim Vom Steeg Kathy Gregory John Moore Mike Giuliano Gregg Wilson Bob Williams Mike Giuliano Mark French Tim Vom Steeg Gregg Wilson Tim Vom Steeg Greg Wilson Dave Wolf 22 SBCC WEST UCSB SBCC WEST SBCC UCSB SBCC WEST UCSB SBCC WEST UCSB SBCC UCSB UCSB SBCC SBCC WEST UCSB UCSB SBCC UCSB UCSB WEST SBCC UCSB UCSB WEST UCSB UCSB UCSB WEST WEST UCSB UCSB UCSB WEST SBCC SBCC UCSB WEST WEST UCSB UCSB WEST UCSB UCSB UCSB UCSB UCSB WEST College Coach of the Year Bob Williams UCSB Men’s Basketball Plenty of local television sets were locked on CBS on the night of March 19th, as UCSB’s men’s basketball team went up against second-seeded powerhouse Ohio State in the first round of March Madness. The man who led the Gauchos there was Bob Williams, who in 1998 inherited a UCSB program that hadn’t had a winning season for five years. The team lost its first eight games that season, but he righted the ship as the Gauchos won 15 of their final 20 contests. Under Williams, the Gauchos have gone 199-156 with four postseason appearances and 10 winning seasons. This year’s young team finished 20-10, winning the Big West regular-season title as well as the Big West Tournament. Led by a stellar sophomore class which Williams recruited, the Gauchos went 12-4 in the Big West this season. Sophomore Orlando Johnson was named Big West Player of the Year, and Williams earned his third award as the conference’s Coach of the Year. After the loss to the mighty Buckeyes, Williams was asked what the ensuing offseason would bring for the Gauchos, who will return all but two players from this year’s squad. “There’s a lot to work with, and a lot to work on. The number one thing they have to do is really be humble, now that they’ve had some success. Then come back (next season) and try to get better,” he said. Williams is the proud father of daughter Kori. High School Coach of the Year Todd Heil SBHS Boys’ Soccer It was a special year for boys soccer in our community, with the apex being both Santa Barbara High and Dos Pueblos meeting for the CIF Championship in front of an estimated 8,000 fans at UCSB’s Harder Stadium. Santa Barbara won that game, capping off a historic season that won’t be forgotten any time soon. The Dons, counting their 3-0 win in the championship game, won four tournaments during the season, captured the Channel League title and finished second in the CIF Division 2 Regional tournament. They had 32game unbeaten streak and finished with an eye-popping 31-1-1 record. What’s curious, however, is that there was no particular superstar on this year’s Dons squad. Rather, it was an on-field chemistry that made them nearly unbeatable. That team chemistry was fostered by Heil. Heil, a Yorba Linda native, began coaching at SBHS under Rudy Ybarra as a UCSB undegrad in 1995. In 1999, he took over the varsity program and has since amassed 236 wins, seven Channel League titles and two CIF crowns (2001 and 2010). Since 2000, Heil has also served as the head coach of the UCSB women’s club soccer team. In his tenure, the women’s club team has reached the National Collegiate Club Championship Final Four on five occasions and the Finals three times. On top of that, he is an assistant for the UCSB varsity women’s team. He teaches Government at SBHS and has been married to wife Kachina for three years. Luckily for the Dons, he doesn’t plan on leaving the sidelines any time soon. “Looking back at the beginning, I never could have imagined the success we’ve had over the past few years. Our program’s identity is based on the quality of soccer, and I look forward to continuing with that tradition of success,” he said. High School Coach of the Year Danelle Little DPHS Girls’ Waterpolo Danelle Little has coached her alma mater to a remarkable three consecutive CIF Championships, and this past year had what most considered the No. 1 girls water polo team in the country. The Chargers proved to be truly invincible, going 31-0 en route to the championship. That 31st win, however, didn’t come easy. DP trailed second-ranked Newport Harbor 7-2 late in the second quarter but went on to score six unanswered goals and grab a dramatic 8-7 win. What many may not know about coaching aquatics at such a high level is that it requires grueling hours. During the season, Little is at the pool at 5:15 a.m. to set up for morning practices. After that it’s school, where Little teaches math and psychology to her fellow Chargers (she’s a 1996 graduate). It’s back to the pool after that, and on days when there is a road game the team might not be back until late in the evening. Little, who played at DP before girls water polo was a recognized CIF sport, played for two years at UCSB before returning to the high school to coach under SBART Hall-of-Famer Jim Ranta in 1999. Back then and up until the last few years, Santa Barbara High was the preeminent program. Little credits the powershift to the Chargers’ new Elings Aquatic Center, which was opened in 2007. She also thinks that many of the community’s talented club players were attracted to DP because of the magnetism of star players such as two-time reigning CIF MVP Kiley Neushul. “Our new pool was huge, and also the way the club program has built up in recent years,” said the backto-back CIF Coach of the Year. Little, who married fellow DP graduate Danny Muhr in March, looks forward to starting a family soon and realizing her dream of being a mom. 2010 High School Coach of the Year Past Recipients 1968 1969 1970 1971 1972 1973 1974 1975 1975 1976 1976 1977 1978 1979 1980 1981 1982 1983 1984 1985 1986 1987 1988 1989 1990 1991 1992 1993 1993 1994 1995 1996 1997 1998 1999 2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009 Sam Cathcart Jim Bashore Jack Triguiero Don Volpi Maury Halleck Dick Mires Mike Warren Mike Hart Manuel Garcia Lou Panizzon Linda Dawson Linda Dawson Tom Shoji Maury Halleck Lou Panizzon Mike Moropoulos Manuel Garcia SBHS CARP SBHS DPHS SMHS DPHS CARP DPHS SBHS CARP BDHS BDH SMHS SMHS CARP SBHS SBHS Gordon McClenathenDPHS Cecilia Gutierrez BDHS Mike Hart DPHS Jack Triguiero SBHS Lou Panizzon CARP Lou Panizzon CARP Scott O’Leary DPHS Lito Garcia SBHS Jim Ranta DPHS Ben Hallock CARP Norris Fletcher BDHS Satini Puailoa SMHS Joel Garbarino SMHS Scott Brennand SMHS Jack Trigueiro SBHS Jeff Hesselmeyer DPHS Abe Jahadhmy SMHS Mark Walsh SBHS Jon Lee SMHS Nan Seed Verkaik SBHS Fred Warrecker SBHS Coley Candaele CARP Mark Walsh SBHS Chris Parrish DPHS Dwayne HauschildDPHS Jason Donnelly LBHS Tom Crawford BDHS John Gannon SBHS 23 SBARTSpecial Awards 2010 24 Sportsperson of the Month Generously Sponsored by Wade and Roxanne Nomura and Family C riteria for selection of the person or organization honored in this category include the characteristics of good sportsmanship and demonstrated leadership abilities in the area of sports or athletics. Ivan Diffenderfer Scholar Athletes of the Year Generously Sponsored by The Human Performance Center he Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Scholar Athlete of the Year Award was initiated in September 1986 after the Round Table’s Board of Directors recognized the need to honor those students who are not only successful athletes, but who also maintain strong academic and extra-curricular credentials. Qualifications for nomination include participation in varsity athletics at the high school level and in designated athletic programs at the college level. Academic qualifications include outstanding grade point averages, usually greater than 3.5, in conjunction with other scholarly activities such as honor societies, scientific societies, extra-curricular activities and outstanding aptitude test scores for high school. Students have been selected by principals, senior counselors, athletic directors and coaches at the various high schools and colleges in the Santa Barbara area, in association with the Athletic Round Table. The Round Table feels that the significance of this award goes beyond recognizing individual students who have outstanding academic and athletic records. It is also a reminder to the community that it is possible for a student to participate in athletics and still maintain outstanding academic achievement. We are proud to present this year’s recipients. 2009-10 Scholar Athlete of the Year Awards Bishop Diego HS...............Melissa Georgi Carpinteria HS...................Amanda Burch Cate School.........................Mackenzie Walsh Dos Pueblos HS.................Meagan Bellefeuille Laguna Blanca....................Seth Judson San Marcos HS...................Jenny Ann Martinez Santa Barbara HS...............Rebecca Neilsen-Robbins Santa Barbara CC..............Lauren Takayesu USCB...................................Katie Voigtlander Westmont College.............Sean Adams On behalf of the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table, we congratulate each of you for your outstanding achievement in the classroom and well as in athletics and wish you the best.
