Floor Model Sale
Once a year we clear out all floor models in
Husqvarna Viking, White and Brother brands of
sewing machines, sergers and embroidery
machines. The manufacturers will sell us all new
floor models at a greatly reduced price, but we must
clear out the existing models to be able to qualify.
These prices are mostly current
models, but we will also be reducing discontinued
models even more!
Sadly, as I write this newsletter I am reminded of earlier
this year the passing of a long time member of the sewing
community in Edmonton. Brent Murray passed away in
September and will be remembered for a dry, wry wit, a
love of dogs and a great sense of humor. I am glad to
have gotten to know Brent better in the past few years
when he came to work with me in the west end store. He
was a great source of strength when my father and fatherin-law passed away. Always optimistic, he was one of the
owners of Murray's Sewing Machines, and a fixture in
Edmonton sewing circles for the past 25 years. He will be
sadly missed by many friends and family.

How Often Should I Service My Sewing Machine?
by Byron Massey, Service Manager, South Store
Your Sewing Machine Should Be Serviced Every 12
Months! Here's why.
If you do a good deal of sewing: Lint, thread and broken
needles can collect in the needle bar, hook and feed
mechanism, causing problems ranging from noise to more
serious problems that can stop the machine from sewing.
Heavy use can remove the oil that the machine needs to run
smoothly. Lint or thread pieces can cause serious tension
problems.
If you sew occasionally: Lint, thread and broken needles can
still collect in the needle bar area and in the gears of the
thread-handling mechanism. Even moderate use will require
oiling of moving parts of the sewing machine. A small piece
of thread in the tension unit will necessitate cleaning and
recalibration of the tension.
If your sewing machine has been sitting in the closet for a
few years and you want to sew again: The machine should be
tuned up so that you will have peak performance and troublefree sewing. Even sitting in the closet, the oil in the machine
will dry out.
Thorough servicing by Massey's Sewing Machines once
every 12 months will eliminate all of these problems and
guarantee trouble-free sewing.
Come see our Booth at the Sewing Show
Friday April 13 and Saturday April 14
Stop by for a sewing machine inspection. Our friendly staff
will be happy to answer your questions and provide advice to
keep your sewing machine performing at its best. If repairs or
service are needed, a complete estimate can be given prior to
any work performed.

Website of the month
www.katiesvintagekimonos.com
An unusual website dedicated to reselling
old kimonos. Mostly sold as smaller trim
pieces because kimonos are made from
panels 12” to 14” wide. Fabrics and a
wide range of materials are sold in a variety of ways including ebay and other on
line auctions. They have a on line shop
as well. This is wonderful fabric, rich
brocades, shiny and soft silks and include
hand painted, stenciled and even some
embroidered materials. Fairly pricey, but
very unique and unusual.

issues or problems that you might have.
(West 454-6869)
(St. Albert 458-1176)
How do I stop the thread from looping?
xThread looping on the bottom of your fabric is usually caused
by little or no top tension or too much bobbin tension.
xAnother cause is thread or lint caught in the top tension
xMake sure the thread is between the tension discs and that no
thread or lint is caught
xThe thread should pull from the bobbin tension evenly.
You should not have to pull too hard or be jerky unreeling
xCheck that your top tension is set to a medium number
xMake sure the thread is in the take-up lever
Why won’t my tension change when I turn the tension dial?
xThis problem is usually caused by lint or thread caught in the
tension discs
xCheck between the tension discs for lint
xThere are a few reasons the top thread may break
xAfter re-threading the machine, check that the top thread is
between the discs
xCheck the hook for damage. If the hook is damaged it can
cause the thread to break as it comes off the tip. Be very
careful if you must remove burrs from the hook. Changing
the shape of the hook tip will cause skipping problems.
Why does my top thread keep breaking?
xCheck the needle plate for damage around the needle hole.
Polish any burrs with fine sand paper
xCheck that the top tension is not too high. The top tension
should be set at a medium number for regular sewing
Why does my needle break?
xCheck that the top tension is not too tight. The top tension
should be set at a medium number regular sewing
xCheck needle size for the thickness of you fabric. Using a
needle that is too small for the type and thickness of fabric
you are using will cause the needle to bend and hit the hook
xThe hook timing may be out Insert a new needle and carefully
turn the hand wheel towards you. Check that the needle is not
going to hit the hook
