Puerto Plata City
Visit for a fascinating look at Latin American life
Central Park at night... a colonial glorieta is the centerpiece of Central
Park, with the San Felipe Cathedral in the background.

Look for... a bustling city center situated around Central Park, fun to stroll
around this historic part of town... lots of Victorian style colonial
architecture... street vendors... beat-up old cars... it’s an eyeful - and lots
of fun taking the pictures

The Amber Museum
A window on the prehistoric past
A walk through Central Park
will take you to the
resplendent white towers of
the Church of San Felipe. At
about 100 meters uphill on
Duarte street you’ll find The
Amber Museum. An
outstanding example of
Victorian architecture, the
museum houses a unique
collection of valuable
Dominican amber. Experts say
this amber is known to be the
most transparent in the world.
Amber is classified as
semiprecious and is actually
tree sap that has hardened for
millions of years, capturing
many fossils of plant and
insect life. Guided tours in
several languages are given
Monday through Saturday
from 9am to 6pm. The Amber
Museum shops offer a full
selection of Dominican amber
jewelry, both in Puerto Plata
and in Playa Dorada Plaza.
Stroll along the Malecon... the wide oceanfront the promenade runs along
the shoreline and ends at the 500 year old San Felipe Fortress
There’s a colorful expat community... look for local watering holes and
restaurants where you’ll take in a good yarn and get some insider’s
perspective on life in a Latin American town
Consider Mt. Isabel de Torres... a cable car takes you up to 2800 feet to
botanical gardens, cool mountain breezes and some spectacular views!
Don’t miss... The Amber Museum and Sam’s Bar & Grill near central
park... Tam Tam Cafe on the Malecon... best sunset pictures from the
fortress ruins around 7:30 each night...

Today they are renowned in the
business, having being
described by Cigar Aficionado
as “an excellent example of the
boutique manufacturers art. “
What could be more fascinating than a pawnshop jewelry store in a
Caribbean port city? Discover a great selection of jewelry from all over
the world! American Robert Hildreth runs the largest one in Puerto
Plata, and invites visitors to take advantage of his no-nonsense policy
of selling gold by the gram. Pricing by gram and not by design or
