The new Club Secretary Mr Brian Lees is running a tight ship and keeping the committee up to date with the goings on within the club, working well with committee member Alan Bartram. The new Treasurer is Mrs Jill Terry who, having sorted out the accounts and banking, believes with the committee that the club looks to be going forward with a healthy balance. The club’s welfare rescue money from the late Mrs Casey bequest has its own account and will be carefully monitored. We have a new very capable Rescue co-ordinator in Miss Debbie Goodwin who has produced some very good documented paperwork for all the rescued and future Papillons coming into the system and for the ones we find forever homes for. She already has successfully re-homed Papillons in her first few months. Mrs Elaine Stanmore has remained as our Membership Secretary and she informs us that we are attracting some new members which will be good for the future of the club. We just need to continue attracting more people and give all our new and old valued members something to look forward to with plenty of club activities and some well run shows. The club website is up and running which will be kept updated by Jill Terry. I have heard many good comments and hope it will keep helping members with their enquiries and needs. We had our first Newsletter printed and well produced by new committee member and newsletter editor Melanie Mann. It was warmly received and very informative. A request from Melanie and the Committee is keep your news coming in with anything of interest so Melanie might keep these interesting newsletters coming. Unfortunately the eagerly anticipated Handbook had to be put on hold but now has been resurrected with lots of lovely breeder pages and will be available in the New Year and certainly at Crufts on our breed club stand where it will also be available to purchase. With the lovely warm Summer days we’ve had, the show scene really took off and around our ring seemed a very happy place. The breed has had some great shows with plenty of high profile wins, fantastic news with several top winning 5 Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club - Christmas 2014 CC and BOBs going forward to the Toy Group to either win the Group or take one of the remaining places, plus win the ultimate BIS or Res BIS award. Blackpool’s well run show was so exciting for myself awarding tickets for the first time in the Toy group and to see my BOB go forward to take Group 4. Several breeders and exhibitors have had some exciting wins with new babies and youngsters, a couple taking CCs or RCCs at a tender age and also going on further to take group placements. I hope you will help the new Committee to go forward and offer up suggestions on how you think your Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club should be run. Please approach all of the Committee members whose names will be in the Show Catalogues or inform Brian Lees or myself if you think you would like to join the Committee and be a worker, I am sure we will make you most welcome. Jenny Miller From your Secretary By now, most of our readers will be aware of the Officers and Committee at your Club. The familiar faces of Jenny Miller in the Chair, Elaine Stanmore as Membership Secretary, Ellie Mordecai as Show Secretary and Carol Lees continue to enthusiastically support our club. We have welcomed Ian Dack to our ranks, Alan Bartram as Vice-Chairman and Debbie Goodwin doing a superb job as Rescue and Welfare co-ordinator, not forgetting Melanie Mann and the excellent job she is doing with the Newsletters. Moving into the firing line alongside myself is Jill Terry as Club Treasurer keeping a close watch on our finances. By way of introduction to those who don’t know me, I have served on this Committee for the past couple of years and can bring many years worth of experience from previous Committee roles including secretary of the Maltese Club, Chairman and former secretary of a Yorkshire Terrier Club and Committee roles on a variety of Clubs extending back over 25 years. I enjoy the challenges the dog world can bring and I also take great pleasure from judging, awarding CC’s in both Maltese and Yorkies. The Club has become more stable without the distractions of recent years and I am delighted to say that both venues and judges are secured for a good time into the future. Members will also see a return to some of the Clubs’ previous venues, producing publications, restoring and maintaining lines of 6 Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club - Christmas 2014 communication for our members. Hopefully we can welcome new members and attract some of the former ones back to the fold. To this end we are offering some of our recently lapsed members the chance to return on payment of the current annual subscription. Our web site is up and running once more, whilst making every effort to retrieve much of the content of earlier versions, we would ask our membership for a little patience until this is fully up to date. I will end with an appeal to those who might be wondering how they can give something back to our wonderful breed, a breed which gives us so much pleasure and entertainment. We have some vacancies on the Committee and any member who feels they would like to join us please get in touch. No matter what your level of interest or experience, your contribution to the breed and your Club will be appreciated by everyone, not least the Papillons themselves. Let’s work together to make your Club even better than it is already. Thank you to all who have supported us so far in 2014, I wish you all a happy festive season along with a happy and successful New Year 2015. Brian Lees Moving into the electronic age members may wish to receive future Newsletters either by email or via the Members area of the Club web site. We would be interested in your views, either via the Forum or by directly contacting a Committee member by phone, email or in person. Let us know your preferences. The Momentous Question? F or months Bill had been Lynn's devoted admirer. At long last he had collected sufficient courage to ask her the momentous question. "There are quite a lot of advantages to being a bachelor," Bill began, "but there comes a time when one longs for the companionship of another being, a being who will regard one as perfect, as an idol; whom one can treat as one's absolute own; who will be kind and faithful when times are hard; who will share one's joys and sorrows." To his delight, Bill saw a sympathetic gleam in Lynn's eyes. Then she nodded in agreement, "I think it's a wonderful idea! Can I help you pick out a puppy?" 7 Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club - Christmas 2014 ROSEMARY AYRIS OF IBSTOCK PAPILLONS - A TRIBUTE It is with saddened heart that I write about the passing of Rosemary Ayris of Ibstock Papillons. We last saw Rosemary at Blackpool Championship Show and Glenn and I met her as we were entering the show. We asked if we could help her and typical Rosemary never wanting to cause a fuss calmly said “ I will be fine, I’ll get there under my own steam, thank you.” That day she was as bright as a button and really enjoyed the day. The show before had been the Papillon (Butterfly) Dog Clubs Fun Weekend of which Rosemary and David had been present for the open Show. What a very proud day for Rosemary as her lovely Ibstock Custom Made took BIS that day handled by her close friend Helen Wheeler. Rosemary spent her childhood on the farm. Her grandfather bought an isolation hospital in 1929 and complete with motorcycle and sidecar set off for a journey of one hundred and five miles to the Jersey Cattle Society Sale in Reading. That day they bought a heifer to start the herd. They then went on to sell three heifers for 600 guineas at a later date. No decimal coinage then. Ibstock was the founder name for the herds Jersey cattle, which in years to come would be successfully shown by her grandfather with a little help from his granddaughter Rosemary who started to help show the cattle from the age of six years. As the years went by Rosemary and her husband David with baby Neil who was then three months went along to the Abbey Park Show in Leicester. Rosemary had always had various dogs during her childhood. Rosemary and David’s daughter Julia who was then nine years persuaded Mum and Dad that a dog or horse would make the family complete. I am sure Julia promising to feed, water and walk for ever! Children learn the art of persuasion from an early age; Rosemary told me she still remembers cleaning out rabbits and ducks that were more like geese, thinking how had she got herself into this! Luckily for the Papillon world a dog was the first choice and a little bitch with Melchester breeding called Cleo became the new family member. Rosemary always said this was an interesting point for folks to remember, we all start with one dog. So in 1980 the family sat round a table debating an affix name. Rosemary had always lived in Ibstock so by now she must have known every blade of grass the 8 Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club - Christmas 2014 much loved and obvious choice was to go back to grass roots. Hence the Ibstock Papillon Kennel was born. Cleo was mated and two pups entered the world. One being, Ibstock Black Knight who became the kennels first show dog. The Ibstock Kennels first champion came in 1986 with a Pearl and Frank Peacock bred boy called CH Alcala Ziadoon (Zak). The sire being by Jenny Scovel’s CH Caswell Gay Contender and the dam Alcala Mahogany. One of Rosemary’s most treasured memories was when Zak took BOB at Crufts in 1986 going on to take a placing in the final six in the Toy Group. What an exciting day that must have been. He then went on to take 5cc’s with 4 BOB. Rosemary’s second champion Ch Caswell Court Jester came to her at two years of age. At the 1988 Lincolnshire Toy Dog Show he took RBIS followed by BIS at breed open shows. Northern and Eastern and The Papillon (Butterfly) Dog Club. During 1989 CH Caswell Court Jester had taken his title. A home bred champion in partnership with Jenny Scovell was next with Ch Ibstock Mark of Distinction (Ch Caswell Classic Touch x Alcala Tiller Girl of Ibstock) taking 10cc’s and siring four champions in the UK. Jenny Scovell then also showed CH Ibstock Heir of Distinction a son of Mark of Distinction to his title. The Ibstock Kennel being runners up in both competitions of Top Breeder and Top Stud were highlights of 2001. In 2002 we all saw Ch Ibstock Marksman (Ch Ibstock Mark of Distinction x Tussalud Miss Terrie Belle) take his title and storm away during his career taking 10cc’s, 5 with BOB and then going on to BIS wins at the South Wales Papillon Club Pearl Anniversary CH show and Northern & Eastern Counties Papillon Club. Once again he went on to sire champions including two with their American crowns. In 2003 came the acclaim of Top Brood Bitch with Tussalud Miss Terrie Belle who was a treasured gift to Rosemary from Kay Stewart of the Tussalud Kennel. Other notable champions include CH/IRCH Ibstock Bright Spark for Spinillons and CH Ibstock Tallulah for Spinillons both shown by Jo Davidson-Poston. We must all remember well Rosemary’s hidden talent. I am sure many will have seen the beautifully painted Papillon bags over exhibitor shoulders at shows. This is a hobby she loved to take time with and I am sure everyone will agree her paintings were so true to the breed she loved. The first Challenge Certificate appointment came in 1994 in Belfast. Since then the world had been her oyster with invitations to Canada, Norway and Denmark and of course here in the UK. 9 Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club - Christmas 2014 Rosemary’s journey in Papillons has been star studded throughout the years making the Ibstock Kennel one of our most respected Papillon kennels globally. Rosemary’s passing is a huge loss to the Papillon world but the name Ibstock has left behind a legacy that will never be forgotten. Each and every one of us will have a memory of Rosemary that will make us smile and that is how she would have wanted it. Our treasured memory of this lovely lady is of her judging her beloved Papillons at Crufts 2010 we are so proud to have taken the BCC that day and Rosemary carried out her judging duties that day with calmness and kindness to every single exhibitor present. Heartfelt condolences go to David her beloved husband, immediate family and close friends. It is lovely to know that it was Rosemary’s wish that David and Rosemary’s closest friend Helen Wheeler form a partnership ensuring that the Ibstock Affix continues. Very good news indeed. Rosemary your memories will stay with us for as long as there are butterflies in the garden. Irene Robb 10 Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club - Christmas 2014 Meet the Juniors! Keavy McGrath (17), Rachel Dutton (16) and Caragh McGrath (15): T hese are just 3 of the many juniors that are involved in our beautiful breed and have been for a number of years. As many of you do not know us, this newsletter will be a great way for people to get to know us a little better and see what we do in the canine world. Not only do we participate in showing and junior handling but some of us and our dogs also do or have previously done Obedience, Agility, Heelwork to Music, Cani-cross, Rally-O and Flyball. To begin with I thought it would be a good idea to have some profiles of the juniors within the club, so here are the profiles of the 3 juniors’ mentioned above: My name is Rachel Dutton, I am 16 years old and from Yorkshire. I have owned Papillons for 6 years. I do lots of disciplines with my dogs. I Show Tom (Penang So the Story Goes), Jack (Powdermill Original Touch) and Woody (Petress You Got A Friend In Me), and I compete in Agility with my younger dog Jack & Obedience with my older dog Tom and I love my Papillons because they are great friends. I have just started to judge Papillons and do match nights at my local clubs. I have also done some fundraising for dog charities, which I enjoyed and I help out at my local obedience club. I have passed my Bronze and Silver Good Citizen with my Papillon Tom and my Bronze, Silver and Gold with my other Papillon Jack. At my local obedience club I have also passed my Bronze and Silver test with Jack and my Bronze, Silver and Gold test with Tom. Also at my very first agility competition I won out of grade 1 and into grade 2 with Jack, but now we are grade 3 after winning an Agility class on 19th October. I am also a member of the YKC. My name is Caragh McGrath, I am 15 years old and from Nottinghamshire. I have owned Papillons for 7 years. I am a member of the YKC and I compete with my Papillon Sam (Lynbank Smartie Jones), who is 10 years old, in Obedience, Agility (moving up to Grade 4 within a year of competing), Showing and Junior handling. Also I have previously competed in Cani-x with Mikey (Tinklebury the Fusillier) coming 1st at a competition over a weekend. I have started doing heelwork to music classes with our puppy Emrys, Herumen Mountain Moon. I have competed at Crufts in the Agility Dog of the Year competition, Starter and Elementary Obedience, Grooming and Dogstable with Sam. On top of this we were a part of the Obreedience team competing at Crufts 2014 and we were reserves for the Papillon Agility team, along with my sister and Mikey. We have also got our Bronze Silver and Gold Good Citizen Awards. 11 Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club - Christmas 2014 My name is Keavy McGrath, I am 17 years old. I currently own 4 dogs; our 3 Papillons: Sam (Lynbank Smartie Jones -10 year old), Mikey (Tinklebury the Fusillier - 9 years old) and Emrys (Herumen Mountain Moon - 11 months old), and our English Cocker Spaniel, Tegan, who has only one eye. I am a member of the YKC and have been since 2006, having been to many National Training Camps and Training Weekends. I have competed at Crufts in the YKC Starters and Elementary Obedience, Junior Handling, Grooming and Dogstable finals, coming 2nd in Dogstable with Mikey and 4th in Elementary Obedience with Tegan, splitting a class of Border Collies up. I regularly compete in Agility competitions with Mikey, who is almost 10 years old now. In summer 2014 we were the overall winners of the ABL Elementary League at Agility Nuts of the summer series, beating dogs jumping small and medium heights that were all at least half his age. We were also team reserves for the Papillon small agility team that ran at Crufts in 2014, having participated in the competitions throughout the year, as well as being reserve for the Papillon Obreedience team that also competed at Crufts 2014. I have also judged a couple of Junior Handling competitions and stewarded at open shows for breed classes. As well as this, I have achieved my Bronze, Silver and Gold Good Citizen Awards with both Mikey and Tegan. On top of having a busy time in the canine world, I am in my second year of college, studying a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Horse Management, looking to do an FdSc or BSc next year in Zoo biology, Zoo animal management or something similar and on top of that I also enjoy doing a lot of art and drawings, particularly sketches of my dogs, wolves and horses. If you would like to see anything else in the Junior Newsletter or have any ideas I would be happy to hear them! Please let me (Keavy McGrath) know via my email: [email protected] Unscrupulous dealer may try to cover up quite serious faults! 12 Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club - Christmas 2014 The Story of a World & European Winner Written by: Ponkrit Yaprom My partner, Mr Surak Nogkaew, and I began showing dogs about ten years ago. Our dog of choice at that time was the Yorkshire terrier. The beautiful flowing coat of this little dog is quite distinctive, but does in no way diminish his true energetic terrier personality. We had considerable success in the show ring with our homebred Yorkies, and one day we were approached by a mutual friend who told us about Khun Myra, an older lady, who was looking for an experienced show/handler for her Papillons. Since we are not handlers except for the dogs we own ourselves, we asked to meet this lady and have a look at her Papillons – and, just like everyone else who gets to know this very intelligent and supremely beautiful breed, we fell in love with the Papillon, and thus began a happy and continuing relationship: two gentlemen, one lady, and several wonderful Papillons! Our first task was, of course, an intense and thorough study of the breed standard : being completely new to the Papillon this was a true educational experience for us! Khun Myra had already begun with an excellent foundation, and by carefully adding to this, we found that within only two generations of our own breeding, we were able to exhibit successfully both here in Thailand and abroad. Our current “star” is our lovely boy with the call-name Howard: World winner 2014, European winner 2014, BIS.Inter.Multi.Ch.Expana’s Sea Dragon Conqueror. He is sired by Am.Fin.Mal.Th.Inter.Ch.Siljan’s Tri-Connection (callname Mickey) out of our home-bred Expana’s Patent Pending (call-name Patty). It was obvious to us from his earliest youth that Howard had true show potential, and the promise he showed as a small puppy has been fulfilled in his wonderful show career. Howard very easily finished his Thai championship and is currently ranked Number 1 Papillon in the Kingdom! He also finished in Malaysia and China. 13 Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club - Christmas 2014 And also finished Romanian Champion, Romanian Grand Champion, Hungarian Champion, Swiss Champion, Finland Champion and Czech Champion…. Showing in European countries can be slightly more complicated than in Asia. For one thing, most airlines limit the number of dogs on each flight, and since the major European shows are extremely popular, it can be an adventure finding an airline which still has room for another dog! Finding rooms in the most dog-friendly hotels near the show venues can also be a problem, but so far we have been accommodated very well in every country where we exhibited. Howard is a very “showy” dog, he has a beautiful, smooth flowing gait and best of all, he really really enjoys the show-ring! As I write this article, Howard is sitting next to us and he seems to be asking : “When is my next trip?” We would like to extend our most sincere thanks and gratitude to all the judges who have recognized Howard’s quality. And we hope that very soon the same superior quality will be seen in Howard’s progeny at shows round the world! 14 Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club - Christmas 2014 Champions newly crowned in 2014 The Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club wishes to congratulate the following Papillons who have gained their titles in 2014 - well done on your outstanding achievements! We miss Dartmoor a lot, particularly the chickens and the infamous rooster Kevin, but there are new adventures and excitements to look forward to. The attraction for my husband was the golf course situated only a mile away and for the boys and me it is the Dog Club, with its own club house and extraordinary variety of fun and games which seem to expand in their diversities each term. Last summer the theme for the displays was line dancing and maypole dancing with dogs. I have done neither so the prospect of dressing up in a country and western outfit and actually dancing in public was a far cry from the competitive obedience of our previous lives. Thankfully I was was not press ganged into the maypole routine as, with my coordination, it would probably in resulted in several hours of disentanglement, however I volunteered with Dell for the line dance. Now I don't know a do-si-do from a pasodoble but enthusiasm over talent counts in these matters. At first Dell was totally bemused by my change from the formal walking in straight lines and sharp corners of obedience to the jaunty flounce up and down, back and forth and in any other direction the music and other team members took us. Not in my comfort zone either but he soon stopped giving me sidelong looks and just accepted that mum was again off on one of her more weirder pursuits. I promised not to tread on his paws if he did not tread on mine. Rehearsal went OK, and at worst, were just 'interesting'. The real fun began when costumes were introduced. Most particularly the bells on sticks. Until this point, the dogs had trudged round patiently with us, and I suspect Dell was actually rather bored by this stage and wondering when the jumps and fly boxes were going to appear. He was however, instantly animated by the appearance of those lovely jingly bells and ribbons, unfortunately so was the bull terrier next to us. I had no idea they were capable of jumping so high. Suddenly face to face with an over excited bulldog, with jaws snapping at my jingle bells was very unnerving. He was like Zebedee on speed. 18 Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club - Christmas 2014 Our first 'engagement' for the season was in the town centre itself, which meant we could be seen by anyone who knew us, this did little to steady the nerves but most people not in the Dog Club think we are strange anyway. (What is the difference between doggy dancing and bashing a small white ball round and round a field trying to get it in an apparently smaller hole, I ask)? However, the day in question turned out to be sunny, but very windy. Concentrating hard, we started the display and all was well until someone’s hat appeared in front of me and proceeded to roll along in front of us like a tumbleweed. All I could think of was 'hat, hat hat' and totally forgot the steps. I turned and nearly collided with my neighbour, wheeled when I should have been do-si-do'ing and narrowly avoided trampling half a dozen paws and feet. The remainder of the dance was a blur as I dragged poor Dell this way and that in the general direction of everyone else, though I'm not sure they were on course either. A fixed grin and an air of confidence usually blags one's way through awkward situations and I think we got away with it, safety in numbers. The second event, (I was amazed we were still deemed fit to be in the routine), went much better but was memorable for quite different reasons. Due to perform in the High Street at 1pm we found ourselves being pushed forward by the organisers to 12.30. Gathering everyone hastily together we did our stuff and it went rather well. However, it soon became clear that some members of the public had come specifically to see the dogs and had missed the performance. Mumblings were heard, the crowd were growing ugly. The hapless jazz singer who followed us was greeted with 'get off we want the dogs'. To avoid full scale anarchy we gathered up the members, (those who hadn't beat a retreat for the nearest pub), and gave a second performance at the top of the High Street. A gold star for public relations. Spurred on by the appreciation of the crowd, our trainer felt inspired enough to enter us in ‘The New Forest Has Talent' contest. Never get too big for your cowboy boots! We revamped our costumes with more glitz and the dogs weren’t spared either, having to wear neckerchiefs in the club colours. Unfortunately, they were mostly one size and Dell was either tripping over his or it covered his face and vision. However, he thoroughly enjoys this type of electric atmosphere and I could tell he was on top form. This helped me relax enough to enjoy the moment and I wasn't nervous, particularly as I was largely in the rear and could hide. Some of our members were not sharing my confidence and my only concern was that we would all be present due to so many disappearing into the loo. 19 Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club - Christmas 2014 Our moment came and I had to lead us up the centre aisle of the theatre. It was almost pitch black and I missed the cue and shot off too early, however a hand grabbed me from behind and reeled me in, no dignity lost there. Marching up the passageway we were greeted with 'oohs and ah's', it felt quite exhilarating and we were ready for our five minutes of fame. As soon as we were on stage it was obvious that there was a distinct lack of room and we were marching and reeling on the spot rather than real dancing. But as pure troopers we made do and decided to just mind out for each other and look happy and enjoy ourselves. The music started and off we went. After about 20 seconds I could hear laughter coming from the audience which should definitely not have been happening. Glancing over I saw one of the younger dogs had taken fright at the sight of so many people and the sudden loud noise and had bolted to the back of the stage pursued by owner and others. Exit stage right. Everyone bravely carried on, but the competition was won by a young girl singer, she only had to control her guitar. As always with Dell, there are the high and the lows. He has had more than his share of bad luck over the years which he has borne with fortitude. Just as you think there is light at the end of the tunnel, you realise it's just a train coming. Enjoying our regular walk in the local recreation area I was throwing his ball as usual when along came an elderly lady in an electric mobility scooter. Now whether this was to impress the tiny Yorkshire terrier sitting regally in the scooter's front basket, I don't know, but Dell picked up his ball, trotted over to the scooter and proceeded to nudge the ball underneath it. He then shimmied all the way under the vehicle emerging triumphantly with the ball but hopping on three legs. He had ruptured his near hind cruciate ligament. So began yet another prolonged, frustrating and intensive period of recovery. The vet considered surgery not the first option in such a small dog, and advised complete rest, then careful moderate exercise and hydrotherapy. Of course there is always the sword of Damocles hanging over our heads, the rest may not work, the injury may recur, or the other leg may also suffer the same fate. Bearing in mind that the opposite knee was already stapled. Weeks and months of recuperation represent an enormous percentage of our little dogs lives, and Dell had experienced more than enough of this. However he went into his crate those first days with resignation and we set to work on our new regime. At first he was a good patient and was allowed tiny exercise in the garden and I kept him on a lead at all times in the house when he wasn't crated. But as anyone knows with papillons, if they feel well, asking them to be quiet and sensible is like asking a four year old not to think about Santa's visit Christmas Eve. Having Barney announce the passing of every pedestrian whether real or imaginary had me 20 Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club - Christmas 2014 tearing my hair out, and no matter how large the 'NO Cold Callers' sign was on the door they still kept calling and ringing the bell. I'm afraid I became an extreme version of Victor Meldrew and was not a very polite person for quite a while. Boredom was a major problem for him so we bought a doggy buggy. I am absolutely amazed that my husband would happily push him down the lanes to the park in full view of neighbours and friends. We often met other owners with buggies containing dogs with varying injuries or those just too old to keep up any more. Dell would sit in his doggymobile like a little old man enjoying his daily outing. People's reactions ranged from 'walk quickly by the nutters' to 'oh, how cute'. Thankfully, most people didn't even register it was a dog in the first place. My daughter's wedding was obviously a very happy event to look forward to but Dell was two months into his recovery period and I was at a loss about to do with him as we had to stay overnight in a hotel which was too posh for dogs. I decided to leave him in his crate with Barney and his 'cousin,' the weimaraner, at my brother-in-law's house. He would be coming in to see to his own dog. I sat my relative down, told him to focus on my precise instructions. I had become something of a harridan by this stage. I spelt out in minute detail how he was to get a lead on Dell in the crate, not to speak to him as it would send him into a frenzy of pent up energy, and take him quietly into the garden on a tight lead to do the necessary. Do men ever listen? He informed me later he had let Dell out into the hundred foot garden on his own, off lead as the other dogs were inside. He had had a lovely time! Thankfully for my brother-in-law and my future as a free citizen Dell had come to no harm. Rest and hydrotherapy were the main ingredients for Dell’s recovery. So, twice a week I took him to our local hydrotherapy pool run by some excellent staff who dealt with dogs injuries, the majority of which were cruciate related, and very often the result of ball games. Dell has never been one to get wet even in the rain, but as always he seemed to know it was for his benefit and set about his exercise with grim workmanlike acceptance. First he would take great slurps of the pool water, then tentatively put out one paw, then the other and finally plop in snorting and swallowing more water. He swam well but if he had not been wearing a life jacket I am sure he would have sunk without trace with all the extra fluid ballast. 21 Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club - Christmas 2014 The most important thing on the morning of his swim was to ensure he had done his 'number two's'. If a dog fouled the pool, the rules were that you had to pay for all the cancellations while the pool was drained and cleaned, which could take two days. This had only ever happened on one occasion. We arrived for our session, duly de-pooped and Dell began his exercises. Half way through he paused for a breather hunched on the ledge in the pool and for a moment I thought he had hurt himself, then to my horror I saw what he was doing, the pool owner moved like lightening and hooked him out of the water as he was still going. If that wasn't bad enough, the offending unpleasantry got caught in the water jet and exploded with catastrophic consequences. I couldn't have been more mortified than if I had been responsible myself. I started to panic as I tried to tot up just how many cancellations I would have to pay for. The pool owner immediately cancelled the next customer then made a phone call to a rep who had given her a brand new pool water cleaning product to try on approval. He assured her that if she put the whole amount in the pool it would be ready for use in just two hours. I left them to it after paying for the cancellation and took the soggy and disgraced dog home. I knew Dell had to keep swimming for his own good but I was absolutely paranoid about this happening again. I phoned the pool owner to ask if a). We were welcome back and b). if we could have the last appointment if case disaster struck again. She could not have been nicer. She said this new product was fantastic, they had never seen the water so clean and don’t worry at all about any future accidents. So it would appear Dell had done them a favour, but I didn’t have the nerve to ask for my money back. Six months on and Dell was fine. We shall never do agility again which is sad as he loved it. But now he can be normal again, enjoy his walks and favourite 'sniffy' spots. There are so many other ways to keep him amused and we could look forward to more of Dell's doings. (But not in the pool). Val Andrews Fed up of Dog hairs in the Washing Machine and on your clean clothes? The winner at each show will qualify for Crufts. The list of shows will be available next year. Debbie Goodwin 24 Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club - Christmas 2014 Papillon Rescue Update Since taking over we have successfully rehomed two beautiful Paps into wonderful homes. On the books currently we have a 3 ½ year old boy who has a few issues which initially was thought to be aggression, but we are currently looking at over excitement and attention seeking, so his foster mum is working on those prior to re homing him. We also have a 13 ½ year old fairly active healthy girl who needs her forever home before the end of the year. Just coming in are a brother and sister, 3 years old with no major issues, who can be rehomed together or separately. We were expecting an 11 year old in but a family member has taken her on instead, so that worked out very well. We have about 5 potential adopters who are waiting for suitable dogs and hopefully we can get these rescues into them. We are still short of Papillon Assistants throughout the Country who can help foster, transport, homecheck etc. If there is anyway you can help at all please e mail [email protected] We have had some excellent feedback so far regarding the rehoming process and its efficiency and thoroughness which is brilliant news. Also, fantastic feedback regarding how easy it was to find us from the KC web site and our own Club web site and Facebook pages. He asked that his name not be used, but for the good of all dogs he agreed to share these 10 insights with humans. 1. My life is likely to last 10 to 15 years. Any separation from you will be painful to me. Remember that before you buy me. 2. Give me some time to understand what you want from me. 3. Place your trust in me. It's crucial to my well-being. 4. Don't be angry with me for long and don't isolate me up as punishment. You have your work, entertainment and your friends. I only have you. 5. Talk to me sometimes. Even if I don't understand your words, I understand your voice. 6. Be aware that however you treat me, I will not be able to forget it. 7. Remember before you hit me that I have powerful teeth, but I choose not to use them. 8. Before you scold me for being uncooperative, obstinate or lazy, ask yourself if something might be wrong with me. Perhaps I'm not getting the right food, or I've been out in the sun too long, or my heart is getting older and weaker. 9. Take care of me when I get old. You'll be old one day. 10. Go with me on difficult journeys. Never say : "I can't watch , it's too painful." Everything is easier when you are with me. And through it all: Remember that I love you. 26 Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club - Christmas 2014 Dates for your Diary Sunday 15th March 2015, Annual General Meeting at the Kennel Club Building, Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire CV8 2LZ -Items for inclusion are to be in the hands of the Secretary no later than 18 Jan 2015. With the other angels he will not play, but he sits alone at the gates. "For I know my master will come" says he, "and when he comes he will call for me." The other angels pass him by as they hurry toward the throne. And he watches them with a wistful eye as he sits at the gates alone. "But I know if I just wait patiently that someday my master will call for me." And his master, down on earth below, as he sits in his easy chair. Forgets sometimes, and whispers low to the dog who is not there. And the little dog angel cocks his ears and dreams that his master's voice he hears. And when at last his master waits outside in the dark and cold. For the hand of death to open the door, that leads to those courts of gold. He will hear a sound through the gathering dark, a little dog angel's bark. Noah M.
