I was so proud of my young miss over the week end.. :) (14 February 2011)
Mikayla (aka Mondelise Heavenly Bliss) at only her 2nd and 3rd outing (naughty mum left her sitting at
home through the BP Classes) had 2 X BCC's and a MPIG win at the Dogs NSW Fundraising Show at EP.
Congratulations, Carmel, we wish you continued success with your young lady.

Love all those great colour photos - not to mention the reduction in cost.
I'm sure others have also complimented you but I must add my congratulations as well.
As we are now living in Tassie we don't have much opportunity to participate in club events or to socialise
with all those lovely Paps & their owners but I very much enjoy staying in touch and pondering where our
next Pap will come from.

The moment I saw Buddy, I fell in love with him, he was so adorable and he had such attitude
and gusto. Everything is done at warp speed and for him Agility is all about he and I running
together and taking whatever is in our path.

Buddy began his Agility trialling in July 2006 with a 1 st place in Novice Jumping against all
height dogs and from that day he set the standard. Within his first year he gained all his
Novice and Excellent titles.
The following year 2007 he became Masters titled in Agility and Jumping, going on to gain
multiple Masters titles in both.
This success made him a standout and in 2008 we were selected to represent NSW at the
Australian National Agility Championships. Buddy was and still is the smallest dog to ever be
selected in any State team.
The year after that 2009, he gained the prestigious ANKC Agility Champion Title along with
the ADAA Agility Champion and ADAA International Agility Dog title.
He then went on to win the Sydney Royal Agility competition in 2010.
What is special about this little dog, is that he is usually the smallest dog in the field
measuring only 24cm.
To gain the Agility Champion title, Buddy had to gain 20 x Masters Qualifying 1st places - 10
in Agility and 10 in Jumping, then also must gain another 20 x Masters Qualifying places,
either 1st, 2nd or 3rd, again 10 in each agility and 10 in Jumping.
Buddy is very well known in Australia, in fact I have had complete strangers tell me they
know him from watching youtube or just hearing about this great little Papillion doing Agility.
He was affectionately nicknamed “The Pap on Crack” by Ronda Carter when she came to Aust.
for her Seminar in 2008 and he lives up to that name every time we enter the ring.
There is no other quite like little Buddy and he is my “Once in a lifetime dog”.
He is a special little dog, he is my friend, my companion, he is my Agility Champion.
Although Buddy is still only a young dog at 6 yrs here are some of his
career highlights so far:

KENNEL COUGH
WHAT IS IT?
“Kennel cough” is an infectious bronchitis characterized by a
harsh, hacking cough which most people describe as sounding
like “something stuck in my dog’s throat.” It is analogous to a
chest cold for humans and is only a serious condition in special
circumstances (see below); in general, it resolves on its own. A
dog with Kennel Cough generally feels active and maintains a
normal appetite despite frequent fits of coughing. There is
usually no fever or listlessness, just lots of coughing.
(A coughing dog that has a poor appetite, fever, and/or
listlessness should be evaluated for pneumonia.)
WHAT DOES A COUGHING DOG SOUND LIKE?
Dogs can make an assortment of respiratory sounds. Usually a cough is very recognizable but it is important
to be aware of another sound called a “reverse sneeze.” The reverse sneeze is often mistaken for a cough, for
a choking fit, for sneezing, for retching, or even for gasping for breath. In fact, the reverse sneeze represents
a post-nasal drip or “tickle in the throat.” It is considered normal especially for small dogs or dogs and only
requires attention if it is felt to be “excessive.” The point here is to know a cough when you see one. A
cough can be dry or “productive,” meaning it is followed by a gag, swallowing motion, production of foamy
mucus (not to be confused with vomiting).
HOW DOES INFECTION OCCUR?
The infected dog sheds infectious bacteria and/or viruses in respiratory secretions. These secretions become
aerosolized and float in the air to be inhaled by a healthy dog.
The normal respiratory tract has substantial safeguards against invading infectious agents. The most
important of these is probably what is called the “mucociliary escalator.” This safeguard consists of tiny
hair-like structures called “cilia”, which protrude from the cells lining the respiratory tract, and extend into a
coat of mucus over them. The cilia beat in a coordinated fashion through the lower and more watery mucus
layer called the “sol.” A thicker mucus layer called the “gel” floats on top of the sol. Debris, including
infectious agents, get trapped in the sticky gel and the cilia move them upward towards the throat where the
collection of debris and mucus may be coughed up and/or swallowed.
The mucociliary escalator is damaged by the following:

shipping stress
crowding stress
heavy dust exposure
cigarette smoke exposure
infectious agents (viruses such as reovirus, adenovirus, parainfluenza virus, and even the distemper
virus can be initiating infections).
Cold temperature
Poor ventilation
Without this protective mechanism, invading bacteria, especially Bordetella bronchiseptica, the chief agent
of Kennel Cough, may simply march down the airways unimpeded.
Bordetella bronchiseptica organisms have some tricks of their own as well:
They are able to bind directly to cilia, rendering them unable to move within 3 hours of contact.
They secrete substances that disable the immune cells normally responsible for consuming &
destroying bacteria
Because it is common for Bordetella to be accompanied by at least one other infectious agent (such as one of
the viruses listed below), “Kennel Cough” is actually a complex of infections, rather than infection by one
agent.
MEMBERS OF THE “KENNEL COUGH” COMPLEX
Parainfluenza virus
Canine Adenovirus type 2
Canine Distemper Virus
Canine Herpesvirus
Canine Reovirus (type 1, 2, or 3)
Any of these viruses can produce a minor sore throat and cough
ultimately allowing an “in” for the more toxic Bordetella bronchiseptica
bacteria.
Classically, dogs get infected when they are kept in a crowded situation with poor air circulation but lots of
warm air (i.e. a boarding kennel, vaccination clinic, obedience class, local park, animal shelter, animal
hospital waiting room, or grooming parlor). In reality, most causes of coughing that begin acutely in the dog
are due to infectious causes and usually represent some form of Kennel Cough.
THE INCUBATION PERIOD IS 2 - 14 DAYS

HOW IS DIAGNOSIS MADE?
Usually the history of exposure to a crowd of dogs within the proper time frame plus typical examination
findings (coughing dog that otherwise feels well) is adequate to make the diagnosis. Radiographs show
bronchitis, though severe cases can progress to pneumonia, especially if the canine distemper virus is
involved.
HOW CONTAGIOUS IS IT?
Among dogs Kennel Cough is fairly contagious depending on stress level, vaccination status, and exposure
to minor viruses. Dogs shed Bordetella organisms for up to 3 months after infection. Bordetella is generally
not considered contagious to humans though it is closely related to Bordetella pertussis, the agent of
Whooping Cough. Immune-suppressed humans potentially could be infected.
HOW IS KENNEL COUGH TREATED?
Although most cases will go away on their own, we like to think we can hasten recovery with antibiotics
to directly kill the Bordetella organism. Alternatively, Kennel Cough may be treated with cough
suppressants to provide comfort during natural recovery. Alternatively, antibiotics and cough
suppressants can be combined.
WHEN IS IT A SERIOUS CONDITION?
Very young puppies, especially those with a recent shipping history, are especially prone to severe cases
of infectious tracheobronchitis (frequently progressing to pneumonia).
In dogs where the distemper virus is involved , there is tremendous potential for serious consequences.
VACCINATION OPTIONS:
There are basically two options for Kennel cough vaccination: injectable and intranasal. It is important
to realize that not all members of the Kennel Cough complex have a vaccine. Also, because Kennel
Cough is a localized infection (meaning it is local to the respiratory tract), it is an infection that does not
lend itself to prevention by vaccination. Vaccination must be regularly boosted and often vaccination
simply muffles the severity of infection without completely preventing it.
INJECTABLE VACCINE
For puppies, injectable vaccination provides good systemic immunity as long as two doses are given
(approximately one month apart) after age 4 months. Boosters are generally given annually.
VACCINATION IS NOT USEFUL IN A DOG ALREADY INCUBATING KENNEL COUGH.
NASAL VACCINE
Intranasal vaccination may be given as early as 3 weeks of age and immunity generally lasts 10-12
months. (Usually this vaccine is also boosted annually.) The advantage here is that the local immunity is
stimulated, right at the site where the natural infection would be trying to take hold. It takes 4 days to
generate a solid immune response after intranasal vaccination so it is best if vaccination is given at least 4
days prior to the exposure. Some dogs will have some sneezing or nasal discharge in the week following
intranasal vaccination. As a general rule, nasal vaccination provides faster immunity than injectable
vaccination.
There is some evidence that young puppies in a high risk environment may benefit from
both injectable and nasal vaccination (rather than simply receiving one or the other).

WHAT IF KENNEL COUGH DOESN’T IMPROVE?
As previously noted, this infection is generally self-limiting. It should be at least improved partially after
one week of treatment. If no improvement has been observed in this time, a re-check exam (possibly
including radiographs of the chest) would be a good idea. Failure of Kennel Cough to resolve suggests an
underlying condition. Kennel Cough can activate a previously asymptomatic collapsing trachea or the
condition may have progressed to pneumonia. There is also another respiratory infection called Canine
Influenza, which seemed to be a racing greyhound issue exclusively until late 2005. This infection
produces fever and pneumonia but starts looking like a routine Kennel Cough. This particular infection is
much more severe, highly contagious, but for now seems to be uncommon.
If you have questions about a coughing dog, do not hesitate to bring them to your veterinarian.

CHAMPION TITLE
Neuter Champion Title
Members wishing to enter their dogs in the new Neuter Classes to obtain points toward
the newly introduced Neuter Champion title must apply to have their dog(s) recorded as
a Neuter on the Main Register of the ANKC database. (Refer to ANKC regulations Part
5, Section 3.5)
3.5 Only dogs or bitches registered with an ANKC Member Body as a “neuter” on the
main register shall be eligible to compete in either Class 15,16,17 or 18. (Amended
10/01)
You are required to return the original Main Certificate of Registration to the office
along with a photocopy of the desexing certificate.
You will be issued with a new certificate reflecting the updated status of your dog.
The administration fee for this service will be $15.00
Please note: Any Neuter Champion title points accrued prior to the
date your dog was recorded as a Neuter on the Main Register of the
ANKC database may not be counted towards granting the Neuter
Champion title.

Vale Ch Koolena Lady Silk Ribbon (Tilley)

It is with great sadness that Helen Baldi has informed us of the passing of her beautiful Ch Koolena
Lady Silk Ribbon. Tilley was Helen’s first home-bred Papillon and Champion. But Tilley was much
more than that, for she was Helen’s soul mate. They were always together and always talking to
each other, Helen’s beautiful girl who loved to perform on command. Her last performance was in
Sydney, at the Easter 2008 Papillon Club of NSW show, under Judge Chie Ejima, Japan.
Performing without a lead in the Property Classes and not missing a step to the delight of all who
watched her that day.
A mother of six champions, Tilley has left a legacy of her beauty to her sons and daughters as well
as to generations to come.
‘My Tilley, you were a winner in so many ways. Never to be forgotten.’
Our sympathies go out to Helen on the loss of her special lady. May her spirit live on through her sons and
daughters - Editor

Members: First entry $ 15.00, Subsequent entries $12.00 (includesV.C.A. Levies). Baby
Puppy Entries $8.00 ($10.00 if only entry). Special Classses $8.00
Non-members: First Entry $22.00, Subsequent entries $18.00 (includes V.C.A. Levies).
Baby Puppy Entries $ 12.00 ($14.00 if only entry). Special Class $12.00
Catalogue: $3.50 if ordered and paid with entries. $5.00 on the day.
Membership: (1st April to 31st March) Joining Fee $10.00, Dual $30.00, Senior $20.00,
Junior U16 $5.00(no joining fee)
Entries will not be accepted without fees
Judging Time: Judging will commence at 10.30
