Hockey Player, Fisherman, Nurse, Spy, Spongebob.
Sound like a list of Halloween costumes?
These are all careers our students portrayed in
the kindergarten spring program depicting what
they want to be when they grow up.
Fast forward a few years. As the sixth grade
students prepare to leave BES and make the
leap to junior high they have new challenges
and different views of life.
To help get the students thinking of life beyond the school yard, BES plans a Career Day
for sixth grade students. Career day introduces
students to a variety of careers—veterinarian,
business owner, police officer, forensic science,
doctor, sales, chef, and reporter are a few of
the opportunities they can learn about.
The students look forward to participating in
career day. The hard part is narrowing down
their choices from the list of workshops. Once
they have make their selections, students rotate
through interactive workshops demonstrated
by professionals from the community who
share their talents and experiences with the
group, inspiring them to work hard as they continue their education.
Sixth grade may seem early to introduce career choices to students. The event is not designed for students to make any final decisions
about life beyond school, rather give them food
for thought. By introducing them to interesting
career opportunities now and explaining how
education plays a part in these careers, students
will be able to make better choices in class
schedules and areas of study.

When you miss a meeting you miss a lot!
The March meeting of the
BES PTO meeting was started in
the library with kindergarten performing. Following the performance, the meeting was moved to
the cafeteria where Mr. Porembka
welcomed everyone and briefly
discussed the school district
budget situation and state funding
cutbacks. Marcilynn NovakModecki, co-president, introduced
guest speaker Shelley Weaver
from the National Children’s
Study in Westmoreland. Mrs.
Kindergarten Performance
Weaver explained the basis of the
program and offered information
to those interested.
The meeting continued with
fundraiser updates and PTO officer nominations for the 20112013 term.
The next meeting of the BES
PTO will be held April 1, 2011 in
the BES Cafeteria. Guest speaker
will be Judy Swigart, Superintendent of GLSD. PTO officer elections will take place during this
meeting. Hope to see you there!

Due to inclement weather in
December, January & February
school will be IN SESSION on
Mr.Teslevich
Little Mr. T, as he so often
called, is Jon Teslevich, fifth grade
teacher at BES.
A graduate of Mt. Pleasant, Mr.
Teslevich developed a love of teaching in seventh grade. He and fellow
GOAL students were given the assignment to prepare a class lesson
and teach. From then on he knew
teaching would be part of his life.
Before joining the Baggaley family, Mr. Teslevich taught 5th grade in
Maryland for 8 years. While teaching in the D.C. area, he met his
wife, Julie, who as it happened was
from Latrobe.
When the opportunity to teach
at GLSD opened, both Mr.
Teslevich and his wife were eager
to come home. They have both
been teaching in the district for 5
years. Mrs. Teslevich teaches kin-
dergarten at Mt. View Elementary.
“I love it at BES”, says Mr.
Teslevich. “It has such a family
feel and there is so much support.”
“There is not a day that I
dread coming to school”.
Even in his time away from
school, Mr. Teslevich loves to
teach. He has coached girls junior
high soccer for four seasons.
Mr. Teslevich and his wife have
2 children—Owen 3 and Avalon
3 months. “I love spending time
with the kids,” says Teslevich. “I
love teaching them new things.”
Owen is a sports fan and he and
his dad like to go to Penn State
and Penguin games. It’s not unusual to see the pair practicing
hockey in the garage.
Fate has a funny way of bringing people together. We are glad
it brought Mr. T to BES!

Baggaley has adopted a second
kennel of Military Working Dogs.
The kennel, located in Qatar, has 15
dogs.
Westmoreland Manor has joined
efforts with BES on this project.
The staff is collecting both cash and
supplies to be donated. They are
very excited about the project. Even visitors to the Manor are
donating.
Through the generosity of BES
students and staff and the families of
Westmoreland Manor, 8 more
boxes of treats and supplies have
been sent to the MWD and their
handlers.
There are more than 2,000 dogs
serving our country. While we can
not send to each kennel, we want to
let as many as possible know we at
BES appreciate the sacrifices they
make for us. Please keep sending in

The 4th grade boys basketball travel team won the Pittsburgh Metro Tournament on Feb. 26 defeating Upper St. Clair 37-19. BES team members include
Noah Belak, Reed Fenton and Reese Mueseler. They are coached by Neal Fenton. Way to go boys!
Vincent Leone, a first grader at BES, started Karate when he was 4yrs old. He has studied both
American Freestyle and Tang So Do. Vincent has
earned his Green Belt. He recently competed in a
tournament in Blairsville winning 1st place in sparring, 3rd place in form & medaled in breaking
boards. Vincent will be travelling to State College
for a tournament in April. Vincent trains at least
twice a week and hopes to earn his black belt by
age 12. Vincent looks up to his teachers and
hopes that one day he will be as good as Master
Harshall and maybe have his own Karate school
someday.
Jacob Lubic, a sixth grade student in Mrs. Roesch’s class,
had the opportunity of a lifetime in March 5-10, 2011. Jacob
was selected to take part in an extraordinary leadership conference in Washington, D.C. The Junior National Young Leaders Conference (JrNYLC) introduces young people to the
rich tradition of leadership throughout American history,
while helping them to develop their own leadership skills.
During the six day program, students take part in educational activities and presentations and visit relevant sites, such
as Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, West Virginia and
Washington D.C.’s monuments and memorials. In addition to
examining notable leaders and historic figures, students study
the impact of leadership throughout critical periods of American history. Upon completion of JrNYLC, students gain a
greater sense of understanding of the role of individuals in
American democracy, as well as the responsibilities of being a
leader.

Today was good. Today was fun. Tomorrow is another one.
Kindergarten’s week-long unit on Dr.
Seuss ended with a family night that
celebrated his silly stories. Kindergarten families had the opportunity to
listen to many stories read by Baggaley
celebrities like Mrs. Bolby, Mrs.
Parker, Mr. Porembka and Dr. Piraino.
Prizes were awarded to winners of a
coloring contest and for those who
knew the most Dr. Seuss trivia. Students made Truffula Tree crafts like
those they read about in The Lorax.
However, the night was not complete
until students and their siblings had
the chance to gobble up a Cat in the
Hat treat. Thanks to all for coming
and a special thanks to all the teachers
and administrators that made the
night a success!

BES sixth grade students celebrated National Pi Day March 14. Students learned facts of Pi and competed to see who could recite
the most digits of the famous number (it’s over 1 trillion digits after the decimal!)

Mrs. Feals’s music classes (6W, 6T, 6R) have been
putting together a stomp composition. Each group had
to create their own rhythms, to make a song, using
something that makes sound-- no instruments allowed. Selected groups performed their songs for all
6th grade students. These groups will also be featured at the May PTO meeting, along with other
groups including a drum ensemble and county chorus.

Mr. Evans and Mrs. Boerio would like to congratulate the students and staff of BES for their outstanding participation in the
Jump Rope for Heart Jump-A-Thon on March 16-18. As always, our Baggaley students and families came through like superstars,
and we raised more than $6,000 in donations for the American Heart Association!!!
Special thanks to the PTO volunteers who came to help count donations and take pictures. The event could not have run so
smoothly without their help!
If your child brought donations, the "Thank You" gifts will be arriving sometime in the second half of April. All thank you gifts
will be distributed to the children as quickly as possible.
On March 1, 4th grade students learned virtually first hand about life as a soldier in Iraq.
Through the internet and Skype, the students
were able to interact with Lt. Zang who is
8,000 miles away in serving in Iraq. The students had good questions about climate, landscape, culture and some personal questions
about how the Army has changed his life. He
also gave them great advice for their future if
they are interested in the military such as explaining how education is important. Lt. Zang
is a graduate of IUP and completed their
ROTC program. He also told the students to
value what they have here and that he's
learned to appreciate things more that he once
took for granted.

Spring has sprung!
Begin with another successful Rock and
Read-a-thon, sprinkle in numerous other
activities, finish with PSSA testing and you
have the recipe for a very busy couple of
months at Baggaley Elementary. The Rock
and Read-a-thon and Family Fun Night
kicked off the New Year and highlighted
members of our community who have a
love for both fitness and reading. I was
very proud of our children who read almost 70,000 minutes and collected
$10,000 for the outdoor classroom project over a snowy three week
period. The generosity continued into February with Community
Spirit Week, as our children collected enough items to help eighteen
families from our school. Given the economic situation facing our
area, these events showcased the caring nature of the BES spirit once
again.
In the weeks that followed and through the month of March, our
students worked hard to support our Military Working Dogs Program, celebrated Dr. Seuss and Pi Day, prepared for and participated
in PSSA testing, rehearsed for upcoming choral/band/drama programs
and even found time to complete a Jump-A-Thon that raised more
than $6,000 for the American Heart Association…not bad for a few
months work! I truly appreciate the time spent by of staff, students
and the PTO coordinating events such as these. In addition to giving
our students some things to look forward to (other than two hour
delays and cancellations) during the late winter months, these events
also instill in them core values about hard work and giving that truly
makes Baggaley Elementary School the BEST!
Looking ahead, April is already shaping up to be a busy month at
BES as well. As we prepare for the Class of 2024, we also finalize
plans for the Class of 2017 to attend sixth grade camp, enjoy many
field trips and hold final rehearsals for the much anticipated spring
music programs. Events such as these would not be possible without
the help of numerous parents, volunteers and community members. I
would like to extend a sincere and heartfelt thank you to those individuals who enrich the lives of our children at Baggaley Elementary.
Your help and dedication make their lives better, and for that, I am
grateful.
