It has been over a year since the 160th Reunion was
held May 24-25th, 2014.
During the weekend there was a Friday evening Dinner
and Social for the Grads of the 30’s, 40’s & 50’s.
There was also a dinner for former football players.
Saturday was indeed busy with an open house at the
school and a social event on Saturday evening.
Graduates of the 80’s attended a social at the
University of Guelph.
We were thrilled with the weekend and exceptionally
grateful to all Alumni who graciously donated towards
projects at the school.

Art Class 1976
In 1976, the last project in grade 12 art class was to paint a self-portrait in oils. Early in high
school, I was looking forward to this but when I got to grade 12, being a perfectionist; I felt that I
would not do a good job. Mr. Olsen was a new art instructor and after talking about my hobby of
cartooning, he wanted to see samples of my work. At my next class, I presented my samples
and during that discussion it came out that I really wasn’t interested in doing the self-portrait.
His suggestion was to have me paint the new Gael for the gym.
This was a last chance to leave my mark at G.C.V.I. Due to the size of the painting, it was too
large for the classroom and I was assigned a storage room. It was located in the base level of
the main building, next to the room number 13.
I remember it being late winter or early spring which working in a non-heated room, which most
days I wore my winter coat or cardigan.
My first step was to research what a Gael wore and what weapons they used. The first design
was critiqued by Mr. Olsen. He liked the fact that I researched the history and costume but it
was rejected due to the weapons (nun chucks were banned that year) plus it went beyond the
borders of the canvas (I didn’t know the dimensions initially).
The second design was approved without the weapons and he looked like a Scottish warrior
who fought with his hands. After the approval, Mr. Olsen taught me to create a grid on the
drawing and another one to scale on the board keeping the illustration proportional.
Another issue that came up was that the board had a previous Gael painting. I didn’t want to
destroy it because it was a nice painting and from the ‘50s. I was instructed that this is all we
have and had no choice but to use it. In hind sight, I wished I’d taken a picture of the painting for
posterity. The board was white-washed over with Gesso, and with a very light pencil I sketched
the grid and the figure, the ‘G’ and the school's crest.
Like most perfectionists, I was running behind in my deadline. Mr. Olsen had assigned two other
people to help paint. Dave Carter and Richard Pilon. Their part was to paint the ‘G’. Another
issue was that I wasn’t satisfied with my highlights and shading on the bare spots on the warrior
but Mr. Olsen stepped in and repaired the tonal highlights. When the painting was finished, he
asked me to sign it but after remember seeing Mr. Olsen’s calligraphy, I asked him to sign my
name.
Mr. Olsen had mentioned to me that usually the artist donates the artist rendering. The first
rendered drawing was donated to the school which hung in the main office for many years but
now rests in the G.C.V.I. archives. Because of this painting, it helped me to get directly into a
Sheridan College art program rather than taking art fundamentals. I had photos taken of me,
Richard and Dave with the painting and recently they were donated to the school.
Presently, no one knows where the painting is once it was taken down. Back then, I was worried
about my artwork and Mr. Olsen assured me that due to the laws on intellectual property, my
artwork was protected. Unfortunately I was told that the Janitorial staff had disposed of it.

G.C.V.I. Archives – by Wendy Darroch, Class of ‘74
I continue to work in the archives located in the
G.C.V.I. Library, usually on Monday and Wednesday
afternoons and Kim Sommerville who is an Archivist
at the Wellington County Museum Archives assists,
usually on Friday afternoons. We are currently
digitally cataloguing all our archival documents on
our lap top to use as a finding aid and reference.
Keep in mind that if you would like to donate any of
your G.C.V.I. memorabilia and artifacts that you
have kept over the years we would willingly accept
these items. There is no better place than the
G.C.V.I. archives to have materials from your high
school days recorded and kept for future
generations.
The G.C. archives received a number of monetary
donations from alumni at the 160th reunion and we
have purchased archival supplies for the
preservation and safe keeping of documents,
pictures, artifacts etc.
If you would like to make a memorabilia or monetary donation to the G.C.V.I. Archives,
you can do so by contacting Tanya Drimmie, teacher-librarian to make arrangements at
519-824-9800 x314 or if you are in the G.C. neighbourhood you can drop in to the
school library.

The International Baccalaureate Organization Programme at G.C.V.I.
IB Coordinator Designate, Angela Snell
The IB is a non-profit educational foundation that offers four programmes for students
ages 3-19. At present G.C.V.I. is a candidate school, pursuing authorization to offer the
Grade 11 and 12 Diploma Programme. We submitted our application to the International
Baccalaureate Organization this past April and will host an IBO visiting team in the Fall.
Following this visit, we hope to be announcing that we have obtained authorization and
are an IB World School. IB World Schools are schools that share a common
philosophy—a commitment to high quality, challenging, global minded education- that
The Guelph Collegiate Vocational Institute believes is important for our students.
The IB aims to cultivate in students the mindset, determination and will to create a
better world. Its rigorous and international programmes develop knowledge and skills
essential for an informed, engaged and meaningful life in the 21st century.
The Diploma Programme is recognized and respected worldwide. Post secondary
institutions know graduates of the programme bring passion for learning to their
campuses and are prepared for academic success. DP students, through their
experience in a rigorous and balanced programme, have well developed critical thinking
skills, communication skills, study skills and an enhanced ability to adapt and contribute
to university life.
In addition to, and perhaps more importantly than, developing the knowledge, skills and
motivation needed to be successful in university, the IB DP prepares students for life
beyond schooling. Students learn how to think, not what to think, and they acquire the
necessary skills and knowledge to confidently embrace and overcome challenges in our
complex 21st century world.
In an effort to prepare students for success in the DP, G.C.V.I. has created a Grade 9
and 10 Preparatory Program. Students are enrolled in accelerated learning and higher
content classes through which they earn their Ontario prerequisite credits in
Mathematics, English, French and Science while also developing the approaches to
learning skills and confidence required for success in the DP. Furthermore, students
are encouraged to be active participants in the school and outside community as they
develop an appreciation for their role as informed, active and engaged citizens of
various communities.
At present we have 105 Grade 9 Preparatory students going into the Grade 10
Preparatory programme and 107 Grade 8 students coming into the Grade 9 Preparatory
programme.
This is a very exciting time for G.C.V.I. We anticipate that students enrolled in the
Diploma Programme at G.C. will be leaders of our school community, local community
and perhaps one day, the world community.

The graduating class valedictorian is voted by the student body for the current
graduating year. The student chosen will give a speech as the representing voice
bidding farewell for their graduating class at Commencement. In 2003 grade 13 ended

Durrant Cane
Mr. Eugene Durrant was an outstanding teacher of mathematics, an author of a text-book on Upper
School Geometry, ‘Analytical Geometry’ that stated “and this is our way to the moon”, little realizing that
the 1960's moon landing would occur in his lifetime. When Mr. Davison, Principal Emeritus, retired in
1929, at the age of eighty-one, Mr. Durrant succeeded him as mathematical master, and the fact that so
young a man ably filled the venerable and beloved teacher’s place is in itself the highest praise. He then
became the respected Vice-Principal of The Guelph Collegiate-Vocational Institute for several years. In
business of the Secondary School Teachers’ Federation, Mr. Durrant had always taken an active and
constructive part.
Mr. Durrant was sincerely interested in his students–not only in their progress in mathematics but in their
life and welfare as a whole. Wishing to retain some link with G.C.V.I., Mr. Durrant expressed to the
Board of Education his desire to present a cane each year at Commencement to foster not only good
scholarship but also participation in all school activities. The cane is to be presented to the boy from the
graduating class of any department of the school who has the best record of participation in extracurricular activities, good-scholarship and manliness, as decided by a committee comprised of the
Principal, three members of the staff, and three students who are not members of the graduating class.
Penfold Prize
The George Penfold Memorial Prize was established in 1906 and is now given to the student with the
highest aggregate in Ontario Academic Credit courses. It was originally set up by George Penfold, a coowner of the then very well-known local hardware store Penfold Hardware. Mr. Penfold was quite
anxious to encourage students to continue their education so he set up this prize which was initially
worth five dollars. Five dollars then was, of course, worth a great deal more than it is now.
After Mr. George Penfold’s death his grandson, also George Penfold, born in 1916 and a graduate of
the G.C.V.I. class of 1933, wished to see his grandfather’s prize continued for by now it has been
presented for the longest unbroken string of years of any award at the school. He changed the amount
of the prize, of course, and the award has been presented every year to the present though as 2002 it
has been funded by the G.C.V.I. Alumni Association.
