C ATA L Y S T 2 0 1 6 Welcome Earlier this year, I received a handwritten card from a student at an elementary school. Over my time at the Mission, I’ve received many letters of encouragement, but this one made me sit up straight and read it again. It said: “Good luck on ending homelessness in Seattle! I know you’ll complete your mission.” I showed it to my colleagues. This was a huge challenge. Ending homelessness? I took the challenge personally. The Mission doesn’t make a habit of shying away from tough tasks. When the City asked us to step in earlier this year to reach out to those living in the greenbelt encampment known as the “Jungle,” we took on the challenge. We saw drug use, assaults, a myriad of mental illnesses—and struggled to think that we could even make a dent in the human suffering. We made more than a dent. Our mission was simple: to serve, rescue, transform those in greatest need through the grace of Jesus Christ. We stood on the years of relationships we had built with those living in tents and shacks under I-5 and we helped navigate our friends into stable housing and recovery. We operated with Just Love, our theme for tonight and for the rest of the year. Our work is punctuated by our belief in a God who loves us—Justly. And this work continues across 33 sites in King County, where God is transforming the hearts of men and women who are leaving behind lifetimes of shame and addiction. Often people ask me if the problem of homelessness can be solved. Can we really end it the way the young student expects? I think we can. Because there’s more of us than there are of them. There are more people who care than there are people suffering from addiction and homelessness. My hope is that you take that young student’s words personally too. It’s time to impact the brokenness around us with the kind of Love that comes from the wisdom of God. Will you step forward with me tonight and Just Love? Gratefully, Jeff C ATA L Y S T 2 0 1 6 OUR MISSION: To serve, rescue and transform those in greatest need through the grace of Jesus Christ. Our community has endured much this past year. Issues of homelessness and addiction made the headlines nationwide. Together we felt the pain of violence and societal blot in the heart of our City. And again, the Mission responded the way it had done for almost 85 years. We responded with passionate urgency supported and covered by Just Love. Love that is compassionate and unconditional. This is the love that we’ve experienced when we’ve fallen short. It’s the love that Victor Hugo called “the wisdom of God.” This is not the love without cost but one that understands deep rooted sacrifice. It’s a love that’s coupled with justice and holds each of us accountable to God and our community. It’s also the love that drives us to help many in greatest need. We go into the dark places, to rescue and transform lives through the grace of Jesus Christ, because of this Just Love. The following stories are testaments of what is possible when a community chooses to step forward to help. When we begin to love as a reflection of the Love that we have experienced. Angie, Mike, and Sangeeta all experienced this through their personal interaction with staff and volunteers from the Mission. Their lives will never be the same again. We hope that the same is true for you after tonight. C ATA L Y S T 2 0 1 6 MIKE Love That Finds You Mike was homeless in Chicago, IL and Lansing, MI, but nothing was as difficult as being homeless in Kent, WA. “It was very dark, very black. You almost felt as if you never existed. And when the people you’re on the streets with don’t want to be with you, it’s pretty bad,” Mike says. As a young man, Mike did street ministry and ran a men’s home. But after his wife left him and took the kids, he covered the pain with alcohol and heroin. Friends and family didn’t want Mike around. “I’d steal to eat. I wasn’t getting much sleep because of drugs I was doing. It was cold; I had a tank top and shorts. No blanket, no cardboard, sleeping on the cement.” The Mission’s Search & Rescue vans served Mike in the past, but it was 48 hours of near-death experiences that drove Mike to long-term help. “A gang told me I had three days to leave Kent or they were going to kill me. The next night, I nearly died from bad heroin and was rushed to the hospital. My heart stopped twice,” Mike says. “All I could think was – there’s got to be more to life than this.” He called the Mission and was accepted into the recovery program the very next day. “I’ve never been goal-oriented. Why make goals? Because all I’m going to do is fail. But throughout the last year, I set goals for myself.” Mike graduated the recovery program, reconnected with his family and is in the Mission’s second year discipleship program. He’s returned to street ministry on Search and Rescue, fueled by his newfound passion for God. His next goal is to be on staff with the Mission. “I tell my friends on the street to stick with it. You never know when God’s going to grab you. If you’re not seeking him, don’t worry. He’s going to find you. He found me; he’s found a lot of my brothers. He’s not lost, we are. And we’ve got to remember that.” C ATA L Y S T 2 0 1 6 ANGIE & MIGUEL Love That Saves You Murder. Fires. Overdose. Sexual Assault. Rats. These are just some of the constant fears endured by the 400 individuals who’ve lived under I-5 in a hard-to-access camp known as The Jungle. “The rule of The Jungle is there are no rules,” says Angie. She called the area home for three years, along with partner Miguel and budding guard dog, Locita. “I’ve had jobs since I was 13, and I’ll tell you this –being homeless out here is one of the hardest jobs I’ve ever had.” While the environment was far from ideal, the location was near the methadone clinic that Angie and Miguel relied on to stay clean. Many residents under I-5 struggle with addiction and mental illness and share a similar story. “I’m out here because I made my decisions, good and bad,” one gentleman said in a Seattle Times article. “I don’t want any handouts. I just want to be left alone.” But it is this isolation that locks hundreds of residents into their struggles, living in danger and without hope. However this cycle was disrupted when the City of Seattle decided to shut down The Jungle, and asked the Mission to conduct outreach in the area before a final sweep. Search & Rescue staff offered every type of solution to motivate people to take positive steps forward – shelter, transitional housing, recovery programs, transportation, legal aid and pet care. Over the course of three months, the population decreased from 400 down to 100. Angie and Miguel were just two of 70 individuals who accepted an offer of service from the Mission. In late July, the couple moved into their new transitional home. Angie was connected with medical help that was long overdue for a life-threatening condition; Miguel received legal assistance and now has a full-time job. Angie, Miguel and Locita went from having I-5 as their roof to getting keys to their own apartment. “This is amazing. This is exactly what we needed,” says Angie. “We’re looking forward to having a normal life again.” C ATA L Y S T 2 0 1 6 SANGEETA Love That Challenges You Forget dolls, school mates, movies or summer camp. When Sangeeta was a child, she was kept indoors and punished with chores. When she had her son Alexzandro, Sangeeta longed for him to have the freedom she was denied. But when his father died suddenly, she found herself homeless with a one year old. The worst was living six days at SeaTac airport, asking passengers for food. Alexzandro was a toddler by the time Sangeeta arrived at Hope Place. He was violent toward the other kids and would not would not obey Sangeeta nor respond to discipline. Hope Place has long provided trauma-informed case management and counselling to women like Sangeeta – to avoid causing additional hurt when they come to us for help. But the staff noticed that moms were not the only ones wounded by homelessness or addiction. Many of the kids at Hope Place acted out a storm of behavioral issues. Out of this need, a new Youth Counseling Program at Hope Place was born. “A child Alexzandro’s age relies upon their parent for physical and emotional security,” says Sarah Arrieta, the Mission’s youth program counseling administrator. “Mom may be less available emotionally to a child when she’s preoccupied with finding shelter and food. If Mom does not feel safe, then her child won’t feel safe either.” This new counseling program helps kids like Alexzandro better control their behavior, emotions and regain a healthy attachment to their moms. When Sangeeta began parenting classes and met with Sarah’s counseling team, the whole staff noted a marked improvement in Alexzandro’s behavior. “When I came to Hope Place, I was an angry girl, yelling at people all the time, and my child mimicked that,” Sangeeta says. “The staff really helped me grow personally. I got tools and skills to grow as a parent. It makes me feel like I know I can do it, and can change my kids’ behavior around.” Sangeeta graduated from Hope Place in July 2016, was recently baptized and started school again. She now has a daughter and she recently moved into a new home with both of her children.
