Big Brothers Big Sisters of Puget Sound—2014 Annual Report
2014 ANNUAL REPORT The mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters is to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one relationships that change their lives for the better, forever. Recently we had the opportunity to listen to Anne Marie, a school counselor from Cascade View Elementary School, describe the positive changes she has seen in her students because Big Brothers Big Sisters of Puget Sound is a part of her school. Through this conversation we learned that Joshua, once a shy, introverted young man who never participated in class, is now a vibrant and involved student who is excelling in school. In this same conversation we learned that four of the fifteen children in the room were homeless, but because of this site-based program they were still able to engage in our program and have one-to-one mentors. Through our tears each of us looked around the room. Over the laughter and the smiles it was impossible to know to which children she was referring. In that moment you could see the program working. These children were all experiencing opportunity. Opportunity to see and explore new things and opportunity to look past some of life’s barriers to the potential of a new relationship and a future filled with possibilities. The opportunity gap is prevalent in cities across the country and here in the Puget Sound. Fortunately, our model of service allows us to bridge that gap one child at a time through high quality, professionally supported mentoring. Our mentors change lives. Children in our program experience greater self-confidence, avoid risky behavior, make better decisions and feel better equipped to excel in school because of the presence of a caring adult in their life. Each life changed helps to enhance the family and community in which that child lives. As we look back at 2014, we feel proud of the lives we’ve changed and excited about the progress we’ve made. From being honored with Expert Partner status from Mentoring Works Washington and Jean Ingebritsen being named one of Puget Sound Business Journal’s CFO’s of the Year, to our BBBSA National Quality Award, we have a positive momentum and trajectory from which we will be able to impact more children, with higher quality programming than ever before. You made it happen. Thank you for investing in the future of our children and our community. WHO WE ARE Terry Cook Amy R. At the beginning of the match CyCy was not on a path to success. She was frequently in fights at school and didn’t see her education as a priority. With the weekly support of her Big Sister Brianne, CyCy slowly altered her self-image. This year she graduated from high school (a year early) and continues her education! Big Brothers Big Sisters of Puget Sound is dedicated to producing life changing results for the children and families we serve. To accomplish this we use Outcome Based Evaluation that is scientifically validated and produces data to help us evaluate our program delivery for each individual we serve, program quality as an agency and for adherence to our national model. The graphs below capture results of the 2014 Youth Outcomes Survey. High percentages of youth reported “improving or maintaining” scores from baseline to follow-up in each category. Researchers often consider “maintenance” as a positive outcome due to the tendency for youth to report declines in desirable outcomes as they get older. 92% 86% 97% 69% 81% 69% Social Acceptance Attitudes towards Risky Behaviors Grades 93% 83% Parental Trust Scholastic Competence An agency of excellence is about continually learning, adapting and striving to improve our service delivery to meet the highest standards.
