My very busy life was added to by several simultaneous external pressures; blowing the lid off of my already full pot of responsibilities. My soul screamed to just ‘stop’ but I couldn’t seem to rest. I was waking almost every night at 2 a.m. with ‘the list’ of all the things I had to do looming impenetrably ahead. My usual placid temper was turning a bit stormy. What was wrong with me? It wasn’t as if all of the pressures were negative, in fact at least half of what I was stressing from were things that were wonderful! I started to notice that my yoga practice was mainly geared toward preparing for my classes. I was cooking and eating organic food, but lately was uninspired and just trying to ‘get it done’ rather than enjoying the process. I realized that the ‘good things’ were becoming more like patches than the fabric of my existence. The ironic part is that I was preparing to lead a yoga-based ‘stress reduction’ workshop at my place of employment just as my own stress level was going through the roof! As there are no accidents, I quickly realized at the core of my being that something had to change – now. I cannot teach something that isn’t true for me, even if it seemed true just a few short months ago. I started to recognize that there was a part of me that has been hiding from all of my efforts at inner peace; a part that had barreled through so many stressful situations as a child by sometimes literally but more often metaphorically closing my eyes, clenching my teeth and powering through whatever it was. I was adept at addressing old trauma on the mental level, but my very bones, muscles and organs still held those memories and patterns of reactions in a death grip. As things go, Life, that great teacher, forced me to uncover this strategy that was causing such distress to my system. As things happen, an Ayurvedic physician who volunteers at Ammachi’s ashram was visiting locally around this time. I made an appointment and he confirmed that yes, I was a 38 YOGA LIVING September/October 2009 stressed out mess! While I didn’t need the good doctor to know that this was true, I did need his advice to help me to regain my sense of balance. In Ayurveda, I am a Pitta dosha, which has its echoes in the rajasic energy of the gunas. Pittas tend towards being over-achieving, fiery creatures who can be easily annoyed. My 2 a.m. waking every night showed that my liver was congested which explained my sudden and irrational bursts of anger. I was prescribed a six-week cleansing diet with herbal remedies. It may surprise you to hear that within two days of following the cleansing diet and lifestyle recommendations, I was sleeping through the night! As the cleanse progressed, something in me settled; I was nurturing myself at the deepest level, taking warm baths with Epsom salt, baking soda and therapeutic-grade essential oil. I ate a diet of sattvic food; only fruit in the morning, a large lunch of mung dahl, rice and vegetables, steamed veggies for dinner; interspersed by protein drinks and a two-day liquid fast every two weeks. At first it felt difficult to prepare meals for my family that were different from what I was eating, but it quickly became routine and instead of missing out, I started to feel badly that they were not eating the wonderful and easily digestible foods that were so pleasant to my system! (I did offer, they just weren’t interested!). I started to feel the actions of every organ in the digestive process and a deep feeling of calm and support. I concentrated my daily yoga and pranayama on the practices that were prescribed. Even now as I move from the cleanse diet to re-integrating more foods I am still enjoying what feels to me like a brand new digestive system!! With digestion in order, I started to realize that my nervous system needed additional help; there is still a part of me that is clinging to a lifetime of my body tensing and preparing for ‘no’ when what I really want is to respond to life with a resounding ‘yes!’ But perhaps that will be the subject of another article! ▲ Geothermal Specialist See www.groundsourcehvac.com Don Hull Tel. 610.306.6245 Email: [email protected] Learn Hypnosis Improve your life & help others 4 month HypnosisTraining Class Sept.7– Dec.14 Mon. nights “Great experience with lots of practice!” At The Center of Success, Wayne, PA Private Hypnosis & EFT sessions Wendy Goldenthal, CI NGH Certified Hypnotist & Instructor www.WendyMerron.com 610-687-0333 YOGA LIVING September/October 2009 39 He a l t h y Fa m i l y | by Todd Hoover What is Homeopathy? OMEOPATHY IS A MEDICAL TREATMENT USED BY THOUSANDS OF PRACTITIONERS AROUND THE WORLD FOR ABOUT 200 YEARS. It has been used to treat many conditions acute and chronic, from skin rashes and earaches to infections and cancer. Many scientists conclude that homeopathy may be of value in the treatment and prevention of diseases in humans, animals and even crops. H Homeopathy is a 200 year-old system of medicine based upon the scientific findings of a German physician Samuel Hahnemann. In his experiments with various drug compounds of his time, Dr. Hahnemann found ways decrease toxic reactions, and precisely target treatment to maximize the benefit. Hahnemann discovered several laws that form the foundation of homeopathy: • Like Cures Like – the principal that the medicine that is like the medical disorder is most likely to cure that disorder • The Minimum Dose – the principal that patients should receive the lowest dose of medication that still leads to improvement of the condition, in order to lower the side effects and yet still stimulate the body to return to health • The Vital Force – the principal that the body, mind, and spirit act in unison to try to maintain an optimal balance of health, and that any condition that disturbs this balance, leads to disease because it affects the whole system. Likewise, the best method to help cure such ailments will affect the vital force or the whole system. Since the early work of Dr. Hahnemann, various homeopaths have studied and described the medical applications for about 2,500 different substances listed in the Homeopathic Pharmacopeia of the United States, the official compendium of homeopathic remedies recognized by the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act of 1938. The homeopathic physician uses these homeopathic medicines based upon the unique characteristics of the individual, rather than general symptoms associated with a given 40 YOGA LIVING September/October 2009 diseases. For example, a homeopathic physician may consider many medicines for a patient with the primary complaint of headache. But only after careful consideration of many aspects of both the headache (including the type and location of pains, factors that help or worsen the headache, physical and emotional symptoms related to the headache, etc.) and the general nature of the individual (whether they are hot or chilly, how they are affected by certain types of weather, or time of day, etc.). The selection of the correct homeopathic medicine is based upon the total pattern of these symptoms and tendencies that describe the unique state of the patient at the time of treatment. Modern research has suggested several plausible models for the action of homeopathic medicines, but the exact mechanism remains unclear. Homeopathic treatment has a long track record of effectiveness during epidemics. Some recent medical research studies show homeopathic medicines to be effective for different medical conditions, and the two largest analyses reviewing over 100 homeopathic studies concluded that homeopathic medicines were effective. Homeopathic medicines work differently than other medications in that they appear to stimulate the body to recover, rather than suppress the natural reactions. Because homeopathic medicines are prepared using Dr. Hahnemann’s principle of the minimum dose, the preparations are significantly diluted in their manufacture. This dilution contributes to the safety of these medicines and their lack of interaction with other allopathic drugs. Homeopathic medicines are available for use over the counter, and may be prescribed by licensed practitioners trained in their use. Consultation with your physician is always recommended before undertaking any treatment for medical conditions. Numerous books are available on the history, philosophy and use of homeopathy. Online booksellers include Amazon, The Minimum Price, Homeopathic Educational Services and Whole Health Now. Additional information on homeopathy and how to find a homeopathic practitioner is available online through several national homeopathic organizations. Andria Lanette 42 YOGA LIVING 610-558-3677 September/October 2009 Re ci p e s | by Kristen Butera A Time for Culinary Abundance S eptember is one of my favorite months to cook. I find myself happily making my way back into my summer-heat neglected kitchen and looking forward to taking advantage of the some of the most plentiful crops of the entire year. It’s time to enjoy the last of the summer blackberries, and the first autumn raspberries. An abundance of herbs, tomatoes and squash are still coming in from our spring planted garden and juicy fresh corn is still available at the farmers market. Got too many tomatoes? Try some of these easy recipes to use up the remaining crops. TOMATO JAM Use this as fresh substitute for ketchup, spread over fish, on a sandwich or as a lovely addition to a cheese and cracker plate. 10 large, ripe tomatoes ½ cup of Agave syrup 1 tps. freshly squeezed lemon juice Dash of pepper Fill a large pot with water and cook until the water is boiling. Meanwhile, making sure not to cut too much into the tomato meat, make an “X” on the top of the skin of each tomato. Place the tomatoes into the pot of boiling water for about 30 seconds and then remove them with a slotted spoon. By now, the skin will be nice and soft and supple enough to peel off with your hands. After the skins have been taken off from each tomato, cut them in half and remove all the seeds. Cut the tomatoes into small pieces and put them into a large saucepan with the agave syrup and lemon juice. Stir constantly over medium heat until the mixture becomes bubbly and thick. The cooking time will depend on the tomatoes you are using (average time is 20 minutes). Once thickened, sprinkle some pepper on top and stir, let cool and serve. BLACKBERRY SMOOTHIE Refreshing, delicious and chocked full of antioxidants! 2 cup filtered water 3/4 cup blackberries 3 tbs lemon juice, fresh squeezed 1 tbs agave (or to taste) Add all the ingredients in a blender container and blend until liquefied. Strain the blackberry juice through a fine mesh strainer, once or twice if necessary, to remove any seeds. If the drink separates after a few minutes, just use a spoon or straw to stir it back together. CORN, BLACK BEAN AND TOMATO SALSA Eat this by itself with corn chips or use as a condiment with some of your favorite dishes. 3 to 4 small ears sweet corn 1 can (15 to 16 ounces) black beans, drained and rinsed thoroughly 1 large tomato, seeds removed, diced 1 large clove garlic, minced 1/4 cup minced red onion 2 to 3 tbs finely minced jalapeno or poblano pepper 3 tbs lime juice (1 – 2 limes) 3 tbs fresh chopped cilantro Salt and pepper to taste Grill or broil corn to char slightly, let cool. Combine remaining ingredients in a bowl. Cut corn from cobs and add to the mixture. Refrigerate for at least an hour before serving time. SOUTHWESTERN FRESH CORN STEW 1 tablespoon light olive oil 1 large onion, chopped 2 to 3 cloves garlic, minced 4 medium ears fresh corn 2 medium ripe tomatoes, diced 5- 6 large fresh pureed tomatoes (or 16 oz canned) 2 small yellow summer squashes, small dice 1 1/2 to 2 cups fresh slender green beans, trimmed and cut in half 1 to 2 fresh mild chilies, seeded and mince (such as Anaheim or poblano) 1/4 to 1/2 cup finely chopped fresh cilantro Salt and freshly ground pepper to taste Heat the oil in a soup pot. Add the onion and garlic and sauté over medium-low heat until golden. Scrape the corn kernels from the cobs with a sharp knife. Add them to the soup pot, along with the tomatoes, squash, green beans, and chilies. Add about 3 cups water, just enough for a moist but not too liquid consistency. Bring to a rapid simmer, and then lower the heat. Cover and simmer gently for 20 minutes, or until the vegetables are tender. Stir in the cilantro, and then season with salt and pepper. Simmer very gently for 5 minutes more. Serve at once. Variation: Add a cup or two of cooked pinto or kidney beans YOGA LIVING September/October 2009 43 Health Food Store Directory PENNSYLVANIA BERKS COUNTY Blue Mountain Herbals 610-562-4403 308 State St., Hamburg, PA Hartz Natural Foods 610-286-5268 211 Twin County Rd, Wyomissing, PA Health Cupboard 610-929-4565 N 5th Street Hwy, Reading, PA Home of Natural Foods 610-373-5847 3 N 9 Street, Reading, PA Kimberton Whole Foods 610-385-1588, Ste106 1139 W. Bring to a boil, and gently boil for about 20 minutes to blend all of the flavors. Remove from heat and run the mixture through a food mill into a large bowl, or pan. Discard any stuff left over in the food mill. In the now empty stockpot, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the flour to make a roux, cooking until the roux is a medium brown. Gradually whisk in a bit of the tomato mixture, so that no lumps form, then stir in the rest. Season with salt to desired taste. Every year I plant basil in the backyard, and despite the fact that I love it’s herbaceous flavor, I can’t seem to use it fast enough. Sometime in early September, I harvest all the plants and spend a Sunday afternoon making large batches of basil pesto. Some of it gets used right away for pasta, pizza or grilled vegetable garnish, but the majority of it makes its way into the freezer in individual Ziploc freezer bags for use at a later date. If you choose to freeze your pesto, omit the cheese from the recipe and add it after defrosting. There is nothing like breaking out the pesto midwinter to get a taste of summer. Use it as a spread for bread or break off chunks to flavor pan sauces. As you make it, remember that pesto is always made to taste, so try it as you go to ensure that you like what you are making. Add more garlic or less chess to find a balance that suits your palate. Most pesto recipes call for parmesan cheese, but I often substitute pecorino romano or locatelli, as I enjoy their strong, salty flavors. FRESH BASIL PESTO 2 cups fresh basil leaves, packed 1/2 cup freshly grated Parmesan-Reggiano or Romano cheese 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil 1/3 cup pine nuts or walnuts 3 medium sized garlic cloves, minced Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste Combine the basil in with the pine nuts, pulse a few times in a food processor. Add the garlic, pulse a few times more. Slowly add the olive oil in a constant stream while the food processor is on. Stop to scrape down the sides of the food processor with a rubber spatula. Add the grated cheese and pulse again until blended. Add a pinch of salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste. Note: This recipe makes 1 cup, you can double triple or quadruple it based on the size of your food processor. Come late September, I find myself at the farmers market salivating over the new harvests of fall apples, broccoli, collard greens, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, 52 YOGA LIVING September/October 2009 grapes, kales, lima beans and pears. Seeing the first pumpkins for sale always brings a smile to my face. It is such a glorious time of variety, this point where summer meets fall. Outside the sun is shining, the days are cooling off, and chillier nights settle in. It is usually around this time that I start to think about making soup again. CURRIED RED LENTIL SOUP WITH GREENS 2 tbs light olive oil 1 cup chopped red onion 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 1/2 cups red lentils, rinsed 2 large or 3 medium sweet potatoes, peeled and diced 1 tsp grated fresh ginger 2 tsp good quality curry powder or garam masala, or to taste 1/2 tsp ground coriander 1/4 tsp each cinnamon and nutmeg 6 to 8 ounces swiss chard Juice of 1 lemon or lime Salt to taste Heat the oil in a soup pot. Add the onion and garlic and sauté over medium heat until golden, about 10 minutes. Add 6 cups water, followed by the lentils, sweet potatoes, and seasonings. Bring to a rapid simmer, and then lower the heat. Cover and simmer gently until the lentils are mushy and the potatoes are done, about 20 to 25 minutes. Meanwhile, wash the chard, remove stems and midribs, and then slice into narrow shreds. Stir into the soup along with the lime juice. If the soup is too thick, adjust the consistency with a small amount of water. Continue to simmer gently until the chard is just done, about 10 to 15 minutes. Season with salt. If time allows, let the soup stand for an hour or two, then heat through as needed. FRESH PUMPKIN GINGER SOUP 1 1/2 - 2 pounds fresh pumpkin, seed and skin removed, diced 1/2 pound yukon potatoes, peeled and diced 2 tbs of fresh ginger, minced 1/2 sweet onion, sliced thin 4 cups vegetable stock or water 1/4 cup orange juice 1/2 cup cream sherry 1 cup heavy cream 2 tbs butter, unsalted 4 oz grated gruyere cheese (for garnish) Heat the butter over medium heat in a large heavy pot. Add the onions and cook until soft and translucent (about 10 minutes). Add the pumpkin, ginger, and potatoes. Cook for another 3 minutes. Add the stock or water, orange juice, and sherry. Bring mixture to a simmer and cook until pumpkin is soft and easily pierced with a fork (about 1 hour). Transfer mixture to a blender or food processor and puree until smooth. Transfer back to the pot and stir in the heavy cream. Season with salt and pepper. Sprinkle Gruyere over individual portions and serve with a hearty pumpernickel style bread. TED BUTERA I 484.873.4481 www.paragonnow.com YOGA LIVING September/October 2009 53 Ps y ch o l o g y a n d H e al t h | by Michael Cheikin, MD psychoanalysis, where one lies on a couch and “free associates”, speaking out whatever thoughts, feelings and images come to mind as a means of accessing and learning about the Dark Self. He believed that once these core images and emotions, from early childhood, were captured and understood, the dysfunctional behaviors would cease. While this worked partially well for many people, and was the rage in the 1950’s (think of the “Id Monster” in the 1956 cult movie Forbidden Planet), this model of the mind proved insufficient. This is because our current thoughts and actions also have a role in how we feel. Cognitive-behavioral therapy, developed by Albert Ellis successfully showed that by identifying and intentionally changing our thought patterns and behavior, we can change our emotional patterns. Further advances by Martin Seligman proved that we can learn to be optimistic or pessimistic as children, and can change that programming as adults if we do the work. EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), developed by Francine Shapiro, demonstrated that some very intractable ruts, including those caused by trauma, can be healed by re-integrating the right and left sides of the brain through special movements or stimuli. THE CONTRIBUTION OF YOGA LIVING CHECKING THE FUEL TANK If the mind is the software, the hardware of the mind, the brain, also needs to be functioning optimally. A brain that has all the materials it needs is going to work better than one that is deficient or toxic. Therefore, to optimize this process of learning about the mind, checking that there are adequate quantities and quality of important nutrients such as fish oils and B12 can be very helpful, as can testing for toxicities such as lead and mercury. Eliminating known dietary brain toxins such as aspartame, hydrogenated oils, sugar and other processed foods is becoming easier with the organic food movement. Yoga, acupuncture, and modern “Energy Psychology” techniques that tap our mysterious but powerful energy systems, can also modulate brain, hormonal and other systems of the body to remove blocks in the psycho-spiritual system. ▲ IMPORTANT NOTE: This general information should not be used to make decisions about medical care without the involvement of an experienced practitioner. YOGA PSYCHOLOGY Yoga psychology and meditation offers a different spin on this issue of the mind’s ruts. It explains that the mind’s job is to constantly provide a narrative, providing explanations and justifications that are often simply not true. More importantly, yoga psychology distinguishes between mind and spirit—which are not the same. The spirit can observe the mind, and has the choice of listening or not listening to it. By simply watching the mind and its ruminations, we can learn to not fall for its creations. It’s similar to remembering a crazy dream, also a product of the mind, being curious about its content, but knowing it is not true. Though the daytime mind seems more rational, and at first we believe that it is who we are, through this practice of yoga and meditation, we learn that the mind is just a computer that has inherent limitations and must be properly utilized. Even with a computer, we can’t assume that the answer is right. We must double-check the results. Byron Katie has developed a very simple and powerful method of checking the truth of the mind’s misconstructions of reality. Eventually, our spirit can learn how to better use the mind, and ultimately change it. The books by the Arbinger Foundation also explain how we get trapped in self-deceptions. Coaching is a new spin on psycho-spiritual processes that focuses on the positive forces of love, inspiration and goal setting—that helps us overcome our stuck-ness. Pema Chodrun, a master of meditation, has also shown us how quietly observing our mental ruts without immersing or retreating, changes its nature. The emotions and behaviors that result from our mental constructions--anxiety, anger, depression and compulsions—memory and imagination at its worst—can dissipate with this work. Many psychologists are now incorporating yoga, meditation and coaching into their process of psychotherapy, as it can be very efficient and effective. Rather than getting caught up in the contents of 54 the Basket, through these methods, we learn to un-weave the Basket itself.
