Use the Pushup to Test Your Strength and Power Performing 50 pushups in a minute is a classic fitness benchmark. “But you rarely see guys do even 1 rep with perfect form,” says Rob Shaul, C.S.C.S., founder of the training facility Strong Swift Durable. “So whenever a guy tells me he can do 50 in a minute, I tell him to do it with Dead-Stop Pushup Test Assume a pushup position with your feet together, your body straight, and your hands below but slightly wider than your shoulders, as shown above. Lower your body to the floor. Lift your hands off the floor, pause, and then place them back on the floor and push up explosively. Do as many as you can in 60 seconds. Twenty is average; 30 is exceptional. Repeat the 4-week cycle until you reach your goal: 30 perfect reps. Transform the Pushup into a Total-Body Workout If you see the pushup as only an exercise, you’re not realizing its full potential. “By combining different variations, you create a workout you can do anywhere,” says Martin Rooney, C.S.C.S., founder of Training for Warriors. Each week, do the elevated single-arm pushup slightly lower (so you might progress from a high box to a bench to an aerobic step) until you can do 5 reps on the floor with perfect form. Sometimes they’d grill what they caught— flounder, fluke, bass. Most of the time they caught nothing. But they learned, even at that young age, the contemplative pleasures of standing quietly, rod in hand, even when the bites weren’t coming. Laura became a painter and a glass artist. Patrick and Terence became chefs. Then life sped up. Family moved away; the “Hey, how’re you doing?” calls were less frequent. But the siblings gathered four times a year for fishing trips. That’s when, over fresh-caught fish sizzling with salt, pepper, oil, and lemon juice, they’d talk. Then, in 2001, Laura died unexpectedly from a medical accident. She had been the practical joker of the family. She’d tie sinkers to her pole, wait for the perfect moment, and then yelp as if a shark were running away with her line. After she died, the Feury brothers and their father continued as a trio. When they caught something, they’d raise their shot glasses in tribute: “For Laura.” “My dad’s the youngest of 13. His family’s from Ireland,” Patrick says. “You know about Irish funerals: We’d drink and party, as sad as it was. It’s a celebration of that person more than mourning. We’ve tried to carry that on.” Five years ago, Gene died. Patrick and Terence have families of their own now, and they’re spending more time in their respective kitchens—Patrick at Nectar in Berwyn, Pennsylvania, and Terence at The Grill at Forty 1° North in Newport, Rhode Island. Several times a year, the two charter a boat and head out to sea with rods and a six-pack. They fill hours talking sports, recipes, and craft beers; every now and then they toast to Laura and Gene. Pero cada vez hay más estudios que defienden el valor de estos refuerzos para la mente. Dicen los científicos que la dieta afecta de diversas maneras al cerebro, al comportamiento y a los circuitos neuronales del hombre. Piensa, por ejemplo, en el efecto que tiene una taza de café bien cargado sobre tu estado de concentración. Claro que la relación entre tus comidas y tu intelecto tiene más matices de los que te podrías imaginar. Tal y como ha revelado un estudio publicado en Nature Reviews Neurosciencie, existen alimentos que provocan la producción en el intestino de hormonas que tienen un impacto sobre la función neuronal. En otras palabras: si quieres potenciar tu genio, hay que ser listo a la hora de escoger lo que se come. Por ejemplo, las cinco sencillas recetas que te mostramos a continuación. Todas ellas ponen en práctica las últimas revelaciones en cuanto a nutrición neuronal. Considéralo el recetario del gran pensador. SIEMPRE SE HA DICHO QUE EL camino más rápido para llegar al corazón de un hombre es su estómago. Pero los estudios más recientes sugieren que, en realidad, con un intestino sano lo que se consigue es un cerebro sano. Eso se debe a que las bacterias del intestino descomponen la comida y determinan qué nutrientes acaban siendo absorbidos por tu sistema nervioso y cuáles se descartan. Nuestra receta le dará un inteligente empujón a esas bacterias buenas: Mezcla las semillas de calabaza con el aceite en un cuenco; luego extiéndelas sobre una bandeja. Mételas en el horno y tuéstalas a 160 ºC unos 20 minutos, hasta que estén doradas. Sácalas del horno y échalas en un colador para eliminar el aceite.
