Page 3 PATRIOT BULLETIN NEW MEMBERS New members have been added to the rolls of Chapter 1919 since publication of your last issue of PATRIOT BULLETIN. MICHAEL BURCHAM. Michael is an Iraq Wounded Army veteran who has just signed up directly with National Headquarters. In addition, there are an additional two applications currently being processed that were originated by the chapter, those being: DENNIS GRUENEWALD, Army, Vietnam ROCKY ROCHA, Army, Iraq ADJUTANTS CALL ATTENTION The City of Austin, which for many years has extended free parking privileges at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport for veterans with vehicles bearing Purple Heart (or certain other) license plates, modified those rules at ABIA, effective since November 1st. The most important change for PH plates is a new five-day limitation on free garage parking. A complete and more precise wording of the current rules, next following, is confirmed by the ABIA parking operation staff. Complimentary Parking: Vehicles displaying the following plates with disabled veteran (DV) or without disabled veteran (DV) designation may receive up to five (5) days complimentary parking in the garage. Any day(s) beyond the five (5) will be charged at regular pricing. If you were not able to join us we hope you will realize what you may have missed and want to join us throughout this new season... Congratulations to our brother Daniel Wilson the only one graduating from Texas A&M University Central Texas this December that is the recipient of the Purple Heart. He is wearing a special stole on graduation day. Daniel was wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan. Once again, congratulations! John Burkhardt (on left) receives a $1500 donation to the Chapter from the Dripping Springs Rotary. November 7 We were treated by the University of Texas to the Longhorns football game with Kansas, (which they won 59 to 20) as they recognized the Purple Heart and all Veterans. We were treated to lunch at the Texas Alumni Center and then dinner during the game. This lunch was to show the cities appreciation for all that they do for Austin. Jacob Schick guest speaker PATRIOT BULLETIN Page 5 CHAPTER EVENTS Veterans Day 2015 Past Commander Baker Speaking and presenting awards to essay winners at Cactus Ranch Elementry in Round Rock, Tx. Each grade level winner received an award and certificate. Giving information on MOPH and its role in helping all veterans. A very appreciative audience of 1,040 parents students and school staff. A standing ovation for each branch of military. A veteran from each of our wars were represented. Presentation to one of the five winners. Veterans Parade in downtown Austin drew a fantastic crowd despite the threat of cooler and wet weather. A Celebration was held on the Capital steps immediately after the parade, ending with a wreath laying by each veteran organization participating in the parade. Texas Governor John Abbott honors all Veterans who gave all for their country as well as each one that has served and continues to serve. Ashley Kamrath with Army Honoree. Our Purple Santa! Veterans Day in Sun City, Georgetown, TX were we help in their day of recognizing all the retired and current veterans. As we also were one of the many Veteran Groups that laid a wreath to honor our patriots that have given all. Page 6 PATRIOT BULLETIN Friday November 13 Commanding General Maj. Gen. Michael Bills Speaks to the Brigade after the morning run. Patriot Baker speaks to Brigade about how important their role is today just as it was 50yr. ago. 1st Calvalry Aviation Brigade, Fort Hood TX Patriot Baker was asked to speak at the First Cav morning run of the Aviation Brigade, representing the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Ia Drang in Vietnam. This was the Fist battle of the Vietnam War and involved the first largest air assault in history. The American forces were elements of the 3rd Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division: the 1/7 AC Battalion, 2/7 AC Battalion and the 2/5 AC Battalion of the 2nd Air Cavalry Brigade of the United States Army. Commanding General Maj. Gen. Michael Bills spoke of the Ia Drang and what it means to be a member of the Brigade. Past Commander Baker spoke of personal experience of the 1st Cav Aviation as an infantry soldier, and RTO, calling in air support and priority medevacts. Their quick support and expertise during Vietnam was unmeasurable. Jr-Vice Commander Doug Shreve preparing van to receive toys for Ft. Hood children. The men of DASPO (Department of the Army Special Photographic Office) were dedicated professionals who took pride in documenting United States Army activities around the world. Putting their lives on the line, these still photographers and motion picture cameramen covered every United States Army campaign of the Vietnam War. Robert was born in the sand-hills of the Oklahoma Panhandle and he grew up in Meade County, Kansas, just a few miles north of his birthplace. After graduation from Meade High School with the Class of 1944, Bob was inducted into the Army in November 1944 from Liberal, Kansas. After training he was shipped to the Pacific Theatre and assigned to Company K, 19th Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division, then engaged in combat in the Philippine Islands. He was wounded June 12, 1945 on Mindanao Island during a period of intense fighting near Mandog Hill in Davao Province. He returned to duty after treatment in the 30th Evacuation Hospital and then served another ten months in Japan before being discharged in 1946. He was predeceased by his wife, Myra Jayne Hickey and is survived by four of their daughters and one son, and by 12 grandchildren.
