did you
know?
The Stanwood
Area Historical
Society asks,
“Did You
Know?”
Excerpts taken
from the
“Stanwood
Story”, written
for the
Stanwood News
by Alice Essex.
Six children, ages 3 to 16, and their parents came by horse and
wagon from Amador City, California to Stanwood in 1898 in a journey that wasn’t exactly a red carpet flight. However, the timing was
perfect, since Stanwood was on the verge of a boom and the arrival of a builder like “Steve” Chapman was definitely in order. The
journey apparently was without major incident, but sadness was
ahead. The ‘98 diphtheria epidemic caught up with Chapman’s not
long after they got here, and whisked away their daughter Sadie.
Her burial was the second in the Cedarhome Cemetery.
“I believe that Dad built half of Stanwood”, his daughter Hattie, now Mrs. Frank Goodban, recently wrote from her home in
Modesto. Besides homes and routine carpentry, Chapmen build
the first St. Cecilia Catholic Church on the east side. He also worked
on the “Gleaner” and “Harvester”, the two stern-wheelers built here
by Capt. McDonald for the Skagit Navigation Co. The family moved
away in 1909, but returned a few years later and built home at Utsalady.
Anyone remember the Chinese Laundry west of Market Street? It
was there on the dockside not far from the present Texaco Station.
Chinamen with queues went padding about town delivering their
freshly done masterpieces; others are said to have worked in the
canneries…still others were cooks at the Pioneer Hotel. When they
came, where they came from and how long they stayed seems to
be moot question that brings forth varied answers. However, rumor has it that they had a unique way of sprinkling clothes…they
took a big mouthful of water, then blew it on the cloths. Fact or
fiction? The answer is fact…there are witnesses!!
A few years after the Chinese Laundry era, Stanwood had another visitation from the Orient. Three Japanese boys came to town.
One, named Takeo Komiyana, was eager to attend dental school.
He worked at Janitorial and other jobs so diligently that he won the
hearts of men about town. With their help, he was able to realize
his dream much sooner than anticipated.
After graduation from an Oregon dental college, he went to his
home in Japan to marry, expecting to return with his bride. Unhappily that was not his fate. After his untimely death, a tombstone
traveled across the miles to his native land. It read, “Memoriam
to Dr. Takeo Komiyana”, and carried the names of his Stanwood
friends.

Spring
Spring comes in on gentle wings
Upon the winter snow
The village folk have cause to sing
Their praise to Him above
The bare-limbed trees are leafing out
And daffodils appear
Birds from afar are flying back
Their songs to please the ear.
“Oh Spring is here, “Oh Spring is here”
The children shout with joy!
Maypoles are up, the dance is on
For yet another year.

KID’S KORNER
April Fool’s Spilled Coffee
There’s nothing like a good April Fool’s day joke. The good news is that
there is still time to pull one off if you act quickly. I have a quick one for
you. It’s easy and you probably have all the ingredients for it already.
Easter
Joke:
Q: Where does
the Easter
bunny eat
breakfast?
A: IHOP.
Make it the night before and then the next morning gently place
it on your coworker’s stack of papers or on your sweetie’s favorite
book. It will work like a charm. 1. To start you need white school
glue or mod podge, brown food dye, coffee cup or styrofoam cup,
and wax paper or parchment paper. 2. Place a little less than 1/4
cup of white glue or mod podge in a cup. If you use white glue
then you might need to add a dash of water to thin it out a little.
Mod Podge is already thin enough so you don’t need to add any
more water. 3. Mix in brown food dye but remember that it will dry
darker! Mix, mix, mix… 4. Slowly pour a small amount out of the
cup onto the shiny side of the paper. Spread it around so that it
is thin. Be careful to keep it from spreading underneath the cup
because it will not dry if it gets under there. You really will not need
a lot to have a good coffee spill since you spread it out. 5. Let dry
overnight. You can use a hair dryer to speed up the process. In the
morning peel it off the paper. 6. Do you see how much darker it
is? Turn it over carefully, keeping the cup attached. There may be
a few wet spots on the back of the “spill”. You can dry these with
a hair dryer or gently blot most of the wet off and let it air dry. 7.
Now you’re ready…. Place the “spill” wherever you think might be a
good prank. Source: www.clumsycrafter.com.

Self-Care for the Caregiver
easter
Trivia:
The first Easter
baskets were
designed as such
so as to give it an
appearance of a
bird’s nests.
“I’m too busy…”
“I can’t take a break…”
“They can’t survive without me…”
“I know I need to take care of myself…”
“I don’t have time to take a break…”
Chances are, you have heard these phrases uttered by a family
member or friend caring for their loved one. Caregiving is an amazing act of love. Caregivers give so much of themselves that often
there is very little left. Exhaustion, depression, and injury from
overexertion are just a few things that can wear down a caregiver.
Self-care might sound like a luxury, but it is important for a caregiver to take care of themselves so they can be strong for those they
care for. It’s amazing what a few hours can do to recharge someone
who is “on call” 24/7. Remember that self-care doesn’t have to be
expensive! It can be a walk, coffee with a friend, or going to the
library and reading a book without interruption.
A great free outing focused on self-care is the Women’s Expo at the
Camano Center on April 30th from 10:00-4:00. There is a wide array
of resources, demos, free samples and prizes all day long. Swedish
Hospital will have a mobile mammogram on-site, Laurie’s Boutique
will be doing a fashion show, and you can find cooking demos,
massages, make up tips and more making for a fun FREE day out!
This year the Women’s Expo is offering a “self-care” package. We will
award the package to one caregiver who is nominated by a family
member or friend by summarizing in 500 words or less why they
feel this caregiver should receive the “self-care” package. We will
have three social services professionals review the nominations
and select one recipient of the gift. Some of the businesses who
are involved in the Women’s Expo have generously donated their
services or products for this “self-care” gift. Nominees can be any
person who gives special care to a person(s). This opportunity is
meant for someone who is an unpaid caregiver, either a volunteer
or family caregiver. You can fax the below form to 360-387-4636 or
drop it by the Camano Center at 606 Arrowhead Road. The form
can be found on our website at www.camanocenter.org along with
more details about the event. Please submit this nomination by
April 21st.

“When I was a kid, one of my favorite activities to do with my family was egg dyeing for Easter. I just loved transforming our kitchen
into a mini art studio and putting my “masterpieces” on display.
Fast forward a few decades, and I had recently heard about “green
egg dyeing” for Easter. As in, an activity that was safe, non-toxic
and that you could simply do at home with your kids, as a family.
I decided to do some research and give it a whirl! I cannot believe
how many beautiful colors I was able to make literally straight from
nature. What beautiful colors our world provides! Why wasn’t this
a big thing when I was a kid? My science experiment of sorts went
as follows below. I say science experiment because some fruits and
vegetables gave me way different colors than I was expecting!”
General supplies for any color: Widemouthed Mason jars (the regular mouth Mason jars were too narrow to extract the eggs from,
and, unfortunately I had a few casualties because of it). White vinegar. Alum powder (this helps to brighten the color of the dye). A
pair of tongs (to extract the eggs). A strainer. Supplies based on
color: For yellow – a bag of spinach. For orange – three to five yellow onionskins and 2-4 tbsp. turmeric powder. For red/brown/orange – ¼ cup chili powder and cayenne pepper. For blue/purple/
lilac – ½ head of purple cabbage. For green – three to five cups
of frozen berries (blueberries and raspberries). How to make the
dyes – light colors: In a pot, place chopped ingredients and just
cover with water (the more diluted, the less vibrant the color), and
bring to a boil for a good 30 minutes. Add 1 tbsp. of alum powder.
Add 1 tbsp. of white vinegar. Turn down stove to a medium boil
to help keep the eggs from cracking once you place them in the
pot. Gently place uncooked eggs in the boiling liquid, being careful
not to “drop” them hard into the solution. Depending on the color
you desire, leave eggs to boil for 15-30 minutes. How to make dyes
– dark colors: Strain the colored liquid into a widemouthed Mason
jar. Transfer eggs over to a jar carefully with tongs. Leave eggs overnight or until desired color is achieved. For my darker eggs, I left
up to 15 hours. The sediment is totally normal. It adds some nice
color patches on different areas on the eggs. For fun patterns: In
the Mason jar, before adding white hard-boiled eggs, add 1 tbsp.
of oil. Add the eggs. The oil that sits on the top of the liquid helps
to put a nice coating on the eggshell in certain areas, preventing
the dye from penetrating the eggshell, leaving all kinds of neat patterns, dots and swirls.

Stanwood JUMP!
With the success of Canopy Tours NW’S zipline tours, other local entrepreneurs have been seeking out new and exciting ways to generate tourism to the area. Stanwood Jump! is a brand new entry into
the field of extreme sports and tourism. Created by Gordon and Deb
Bell from Stanwood, it is a bungee jump from the top of the Hamilton Smokestack. “The smokestack provides a perfect jump off point
to local thrill seakers,” said Deb. Jumpers are attached to a harness
and hoisted up the stack with a specialized pully system. At the top
ring they stand upon a metal plank. The participant then simply walks
off the edge and plummets 70 feet down to the ground before they
spring back upwards. “Views of the river and the surrouding countryside only enhance the experience,” added Gordon. Stanwood Jump!
is still currently running diagnostics and test runs and has yet to complete their licensing and permits, but they intend to have their grand
opening in early June. Photo: Deb Bell making a test jump on March 19.

Two days ago the Camano Commandos, our vigilante group concerned with porous borders and government over-reach, took over
the Cama ranger office and the old resort store. Dressed in camo
gear and carrying hunting rifles and assault weapons, they barricaded the road down to the beach and the cabins, set up roadblocks
near the entry station and demanded the tourists still vacationing
leave immediately.
Walter Jorgenson, the Commandos unofficial commandant, issued
a press release to the Stanwoodopolis Gazette demanding that the
Park be returned to the People. Law enforcement, quick to respond
to the potentially life-threatening take-over, shut down the highway outside the entrance to the park. State police soon joined forces
with local sheriff’s deputies and two SWAT teams from Snohomish
County. The FBI was reportedly on the way. Seattle news helicopters
were already circling and mobile satellite vans were camped on the
highway while the tense standoff had barely begun.
“We represent the People,” spokesperson Jorgenson said via Facebook. “We are sick and tired of these land grabs by the federal government.” He later clarified his statement to include state government as well. (Cama Beach, after all, is a state park.) By noon today
the FBI and agents from Alcohol Firearms and Tobacco had set up a
negotiating team via cellphone, although reception proved spotty
most of the time. According to Vince Hammer, the FBI’s senior agent
in charge, the Commandos’ demands were a bit vague. They wanted the Park ‘vacated by all government thugs’ and returned to the
true owners, themselves. Mr. Hammer mentioned that, in essence,
they already own the land. “It’s a state park, Mr. Jorgenson. You own
it already. You drove right in, nobody stopped you. But now you’re
preventing anyone else from the public sharing the park.”
The Commandos disagreed with this assessment strenuously. For
the past two days the stalemate has stood. I met with agent Hammer yesterday and offered a possible solution to the impasse. Hammer was reluctant at first but finally said what have we got to lose,
we need to end this thing. Today I walked into Cama carrying a white
flag (actually just waved yesterday’s underwear) and met with the
Commandos who were obviously in serious television withdrawal.
Walter’s first demand when I sat down at the old fir table was for a
television to be brought in to the park. “Give it up, Walt, they don’t
have cable here and I can tell you for a fact reception without a long
distance antenna is zip. Maybe we could get you boys some videos

Wisdom & Wit
www.TheCrabCracker.com
from the library. Hell, Walt, if you’d been thinking, you’d have taken
over the library.”
“What are you doing here, Skeeter?” one of the vigilantes asked. I
said I was just trying to be a good citizen. “I got a deal for you men,
something you might want to consider before the FBI decides to
quit playing cat and mouse with you and goes ballistic.”
“Give me liberty or give me death,” Hank Griggs shouted, waving his double barrel shotgun in the air. “You got the safety on?” I
asked. “You’re gonna blow your leg off if you’re not careful. But let’s
cut the comedy, boys. I’m here to offer you a way out of this mess
you got yourself in, let you leave without losing face. You can take
it or leave it, but … I don’t think you’ll get a better deal.”
“Let’s kick his #@?!**%# out to the highway,” Hank growled, still
waving that 12 gauge recklessly. Walter growled back. “Let’s hear
him out.”
And so it was that we traded Hutchison Park, the little county park
no one uses, a five acre chunk of nettles and downfall I used to
caretake as a volunteer, soon to be renamed Commando Corner.
The boys surrendered to the FBI and were allowed to leave with
their weapons and their pride intact. Me, I gave up my lawnmowing chores at the park and now they fall to the Commandos. I give it
about six weeks of that and they’ll beg the public to take it back.

Stanwood now has Safe Places for youth in
our community
One of those places is the Stanwood Camano Community Resource
Center. It is a place for youth to seek help when they are in immediate
danger or have immediate needs. Trained staff will call Cocoon House
for a Navigator who will respond quickly to provide whatever help
is needed. The national movement entitled Safe Place was started in
1983 to serve youth who were in danger of being exploited because
they were runaways leaving a difficult situation or were thrown out
of their household. Safe places were set up such as fire stations and
buses. As the movement grew, community partnerships were formed
which included places where youth frequent such as fast food restaurants. Not only are youth helped but the community benefits when it
shows its concern for children. The lead agency in our area is Cocoon
House in Everett. There are numerous safe places within Snohomish
County. Here in the Stanwood-Camano area, the principle locations
are the Stanwood Library and the Resource Center. Staff at both places have been trained to listen and arrange help. Community Transit is
in the process of training its employees and will soon be a Safe Place
as well. ..So look for the yellow sign with Safe Place written on it. It
looks like a caution sign and has a house in the middle of it. It assures
youth that they can find the help they need and a listening ear. And it
reminds the community that we care about our youth.

Windermere/CIR was one of the winning bidders for the Northwestern region of the Moon Colonization Zone. On June 23, 2013, Marla

documented all throughout the United States and the world. Homes
are expected to be available as early as 2018 and you are requested to

local man tests first MILITARY hover disc
Steve Martin, a Seattle fire fighter and resident of Camano Island was
approached by the US Air Force back in September to test their prototype hover disc that they call HOV-ER-01. Steve, well-know through
the Northwest as an avid exteme athlete, was chosen to test the prototype because of his skills at balance, endurance, and most importantly, his lack of personal preservation. Mike Chroder, the Air Force
facilitator of the new hover program, said he chose Steve personally
because “he will do just about anything, with no regard to personal
safety. No other human in their right mind would step onto a highly
volatile floating metal disc and fly around the room at 100 miles per
hour...except Steve.” Steve managed to balance on top of the flying
disc for a total of 4 seconds before sliding off the edge and burning
both his legs on the burning rocket fuel used to propel the craft. The
Air Force is making further revisions to the design based upon Steve’s
performance and he is expected to test HOV-ER-02 in the future.

Creature found dead near Beach 2
An unidentified animal was found on March 18 in the lagoon just
across from Beach #2 in the Country Club area of Camano Island. It
was discovered by Taylor Heaphy and she took this photo with her
iphone before she called her mom and reported her discovery. Local
wildlife experts from Whidbey Island were called in to investigate and
identify it including park ranger Jeff from Cama Beach State Park. No
one knew what the creature was. Jeff stated that he had never seen
any creature that looked like this one. It had a hide similar to a hippopotamus and a face that was indescribable. There was no other word
he could think of to describe it except that it looked “otherworldly”.
The carcass was quickly crated away to an unknown location where
further studies were planned.

fool’s day
In France, where

is rumored to

the pranking day
is referred to as
“Poisson d’Avril”
(April Fish)
Schedule of Events
A defense system was created in the 1890s called the “Triangle of
Fire”. Three military bases were positioned and built to create the triangle, a secure border to protect Admiraly Inlet from enemy attack.
Admiralty Inlet was considered so strategic to the defense of Puget
Sound that three forts, Fort Casey on Whidbey Island, Fort Flagler on
Marrowstone Island, and Fort Worden at Port Townsend, were built
at the entrance with huge guns creating a “triangle of fire.” But based
upon historians, there had always been speculation of a fourth point,
a fourth military base somewhere within Island County. This would
make the triangle actually a square. Recently it has been confirmed
that there was indeed a fourth military base, right here on Camano
Island. Jack Archibald, a south end resident of Camano Island discovered a battery (a small military outpost armed with long-distance
guns) on property adjacent to his. He was clearing fallen brush and
trees from the recent windstorms and discovered a metal opening
to the base. This photo was taken shortly after clearing it completely
from all the overgrown vegetation. The U.S. navy was contacted but
has not yet replied.

EASTER
JOKE:
Q: What does
the Easter Bunny

A: Two points,
just like anyone

You may see this hawksbill sea turtle in
Puget Sound very soon
Global warming and warmer climates attract tropical animals back
to Puget Sound after thousands of years. It is true that with the increasing climate temperature changes, some of our current wildlife
in the Pacific Northwest will no longer survive. Most likely, our orcas, salmon, and other cold-water sea animals will migrate to cooler
waters north into Canada, or die off completely. However, with the
departure of our local sea animals, come other types of sealife, sea
animals that have not been present here for over two thousand
years, sea life that is well adapted to warmer waters. Fossil records
found throughout Washington and Oregon, dating only 2300 years
ago, show evidence that sea turtles, marlin, pilot whales, and opah
(moonfish) once habituated Puget Sound waters. Peter Aprilfoole,
the lead marine biologist at Puget Sound Sea Studies on Shaw Island in the San Juan Islands, says that in less than 100 years, if the
cold-water creatures can’t adapt to the warmer temperatures, they
will soon be replaced with warm-water creatures. Based upon the
fossil evidence, Washington and Oregon waters may once again
team with species of marine animals that have not been seen here
for thousands of years. Sadly, global warming is a planet-wide threat
to millions of species of animals, and only now are we beginning to
see internationally and locally the effects of just a few degrees of
temperate changes. But Mr. Aprilfoole is optimistic that regardless
of global warming, most animals will be able to evolve and adapt in
time before they move away, or worse, become extinct. But he also
admits that no one can be sure that that will happen. Source: www.

New High School, New Logo
The Stanwood High School’s campaign to create a new school in a
few years has undergone a new makeover, including a new school
logo. The campaign’s lead organizer, Kevin Plambeck, chose from a
dozen designs from local designers including Rhonda Hundertmark
and Jim Shipley from Walking Cat Design, but he chose Jim’s logo
because it represented the area’s local history. Jim created a design
that hails back to the town’s upbringing and it’s Norwegian past.
Gone is the unrepresentative “Spartan”, and beginning 2017, the
Stanwood High School will have a new logo & mascot, the Vikings.

New Shrinking Juice
Knock
Knock
Who’s there?
Some bunny
Some bunny
who?
Some bunny has
been eating my
Easter candy!
Justice Newkirk, a SHS student, recently created a new beverage
with help from Chemistry teacher Mrs. Hauenstein that claims to
shrink humans upon a few minutes of consumption of the beverage.
The claims have been documented and confirmed true by Washington state health expectors and the Federal Food Administration.
Trial studies with over 6 people showed that within minutes, people
shrank to only 15% their original size, but grew back after just one
hour. But is it safe? That question was asked to Mrs Haunstein in a
panel of medical experts at the 2015 Food Inventions Symposium in
Coer D’Alene ID. She said that the combination of Calcosium NitrateOxide, Flandioric Acid, Dropeesium Chloracropic Bognesia, and cherry juice, is a safe concoction for any living being. “Cherry seems to be
the only flavor we can use at this time as the chemical makeups of
other fruit juices causes volatility to the beverage,” she said. She added, “We made a trial run of the beverage using apple juice and gave
a sample to SHS student, Owen Hildahl, but the results were, shall
we say, ‘his internal bodily functions were compromised.” Owen was
hospitalized for over a week with upset stomach, diarhhea, headaches, vomiting, skin blemishing, and loss of bladder control. Even
to this day, some of those side effects still remain. “Sometimes he’s in
the bathroom for 16 straight hours”, said his mom, Carol Hildahl. But
Newkirk and Hauenstein both agree that this current product is safe,
healthy, and just plain fun. Bottles of “ShrinkDrink” can be found at
Elger Bay Grocery, the Tyee Store, and Huntingtons Grocery.

CUPCAKES: 3 c. all-purpose flour • 1 T. baking powder • 1/2 tsp. salt
• 1 c. unsalted butter, room temperature • 2 c. sugar • 4 lg. eggs,
room temperature • 3 T. finely grated zest of 3 lemons, plus 2 T. fresh
lemon juice • 1 tsp. pure vanilla extract • 1 c. buttermilk. LEMON
CURD: 8 lg. egg yolks • 2 T. finely grated zest of 2 lemons • 1/2 c. plus
2 T. freshly squeezed lemon juice (about 3 lemons) • 1 c. sugar
• 1/8 tsp. salt • 10 T. unsalted butter, cold, cut into pieces. 7 MINUTE
FROSTING: 1 1/2 c. plus 2 T. sugar • 2/3 c. water • 2 T. light corn syrup
• 6 lg. egg whites, room temperature
DIRECTIONS: CUPCAKES: Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Line standard
muffin tins with paper liners. Whisk together flour, baking powder,
and salt. With an electric mixer on medium-high speed, cream butter and sugar until pale and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating until each is until incorporated, scraping down sides of bowl as
needed. Beat in zest and vanilla. Add flour mixture in three batches,
alternating with two additions of buttermilk and lemon juice, and
beating until just combined after each. Divide batter evenly among
lined cups, filling each three-quarters full. Bake, rotating tins halfway through, until golden brown and a cake tester inserted in centers comes out clean, about 25 minutes. Transfer tins to wire racks to
cool completely before removing cupcakes. Cupcakes can be stored
overnight at room temperature, or frozen up to 2 months, in airtight
containers. To finish, spread 1 tablespoon lemon curd onto middle
of each cupcake. Fill a pastry bag with frosting, fitted with a large
open-star tip. Pipe frosting onto each cupcake, swirling tip slightly
and releasing as you pull up to form a peak. Hold a small kitchen
torch 3 to 4 inches from surface of frosting, and wave it back and
forth until frosting is lightly browned all over. Serve immediately.
Makes 24 cupcakes. LEMON CURD: Combine yolks, lemon zest, lemon juice, and sugar in a heavy-bottom saucepan, whisk to combine.
Cook over medium-high heat, stirring constantly with a wooden
spoon (be sure to scrape the sides of the pan), until the mixture is
thick enough to coat the back of the spoon, 8 to 10 minutes, and
registers 160 degrees on an instant-read thermometer. Remove
saucepan from heat. Add salt and butter, one piece at a time, stirring
until smooth. Strain through a fine sieve into a medium bowl. Cover
with plastic wrap, pressing it directly onto the surface of the curd
to prevent a skin from forming. Refrigerate until chilled and set, at
least 1 hour or up to 1 day. Makes about 2 cups. 7 MINUTE FROSTING: Combine 1 1/2 cups sugar with the water and corn syrup in a
small saucepan, clip a candy thermometer to side of pan. Bring to
a boil over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until sugar dissolves.
Continue boiling, without stirring, until syrup reaches 230 degrees.
Meanwhile, in the bowl of a standing electric mixer fitted with the
whisk attachment, whisk egg whites on medium-high speed until
soft peaks form. With mixer running, add remaining 2 tablespoons
sugar, beating to combine. As soon as sugar syrup reaches 230 degrees, remove from heat. With mixer on medium-low speed, pour
syrup down side of bowl in a slow, steady stream. Raise speed to
medium-high; whisk until mixture is completely cool (test by touching the bottom of the bowl) and stiff (but not dry) peaks form, about
7 minutes. Use immediately. Makes about 8 cups

Welcome to this edition of Journey with Jan. April Fools Day is here
again. I love this fun time when the jokes are flying and we can all
make each other laugh and smile.
What is your favorite April Fools Day Joke? I can think of many…
Every issue I choose a new vocabulary word, and then use it in a
sentence relating to “real estate” in order to gain a better understanding of how it can be used. This week, our word is TRACTABLE
(pronounced TRACK-tuh-buhl). It is an adjective and its definition
is: obedient, teachable, easily managed and compliant. If used in
a real estate situation, I could say, “It is a real pleasure to educate
first-time home buyers when they are tractable and eager to absorb new information that I have learned and experienced as an
Agent.” Whether you are tractable or not…I love working with buyers - and sellers. And with a twenty plus year career as a broker, I
am still so excited for the challenge of finding or selling your home
or property.
Our Camano Island market is experiencing record low inventory.
There are buyers just waiting for their wants and needs to be satisfied.
If you are thinking about selling, NOW is the time. Actually, this
might be good for all of you, because Friday, April 1, I will be selling
homes for $1000. This is a real deal. So don’t miss this special day.
(And Guess What? April Fools!)!
Thank you Crab Cracker! We can always rely on you to provide us
with the current happenings on our wonderful Island and in our
surrounding area.
And thank you, Readers, for your support with “Journey with Jan”.

is a time when everything is growing and bursting into life. Birds are
singing, leaves are unfolding, butterflies are starting to be seen and
mammals are beginning to wake from their winter sleep. Things to
look for:
Queen bumblebees – look out for the first bumblebees on warm
days in March. These will be queens which have successfully survived the winter and are now seeking nectar and pollen from
Spring flowers.
Frogs and toads on the move – one of the first signs of spring is
the spawning of frogs and toads. Look for masses of jelly-like frog
spawn in local ponds and ditches. Toads often travel long distances
to suitable ponds to breed in and sadly often get killed crossing
roads. They travel at night when it’s cooler and damper. There is
evidence that frogs and toads are breeding earlier, even in late winter months.
Things to do in Spring: Become a phenologist! – this means keeping a record of when and where you see your first spring flowers,
migrant birds, trees in leaf, frog spawn, first butterflies and dragonflies and other seasonal signs. Your records can help scientists who
are studying climate change and its impact on wildlife. So start a
wildlife diary today!
Sow some wildflower seeds – think local; by planting and growing
some wild flower seed you can attract butterflies and bees to your
garden. Source: www.wildlifewatch.org.

Greetings, Earthlings
Everybody’s coming out of the closet. So I may as well come out,
too.
am not what I seem. When I was very young, maybe 6 or 7, I realized out that I was a Martian that had been planted like a seed in
my mommy’s tummy and someday I would have to report on the
Human Condition.
I don’t know where I got this notion of being a Martian or the
phrase, Human Condition, but it’s possible that the knowledge came
through Martian mental telepathy. Either that or I was influenced by
the Twilight Zone, which I wasn’t supposed to watch, but my brother
let me stay up and watch with him when he babysat me.
Of course when I grew up I thought the whole thing was crazy
and shrugged it off as a childish fantasy. But the idea stuck with me
through the years. If Martians contact me for my report, then I’ll
know it’s true. If they don’t, it’s not true. But how long do I have to
wait before I can safely say it’s not true?
When I worked as a reporter for the Everett Herald, I wrote about
crime, government, schools, things people did, and how events affected them. It was then that I realized that my childhood premonition had come true. I was reporting on the Human Condition. I’ve
been writing about humans ever since.
Come to think of it, Martians don’t need to contact me for the
report. I’m already putting it out there for you, for me, and yes, for
Martians to see and hear (a la musica).
So am I Human or Martian? A hybrid? What about you? Are you
Martian? Maybe we all are. Did we planet hop when the water ran
out? Whatever. I write this tongue in cheek. A very human tongue,
but what about the cheek?

I looked up frequently asked wine questions and one that kept
popping up was the question about sulfites in wine. Many people
blame this ingredient on wine headaches. It’s a shame really because it’s just not true. Sulfites are a naturally occurring ingredient
in wine, a byproduct of fermentation. Winemakers add extra sulfites to protect wine against oxidation and bacterial spoilage. Even
organic wine that adds no sulfites still contain trace amounts. A
very small percentage of people suffer from sulfite allergies (about
1%). Because of this, the U.S. (and Australia) requires the labeling
of sulfites on wine. Europe doesn’t require the warning but has
started to put it on bottles as well. The issue with sulfite allergies
is serious and consuming wine could result in an allergic reaction
similar to an asthma attack, hives or worse. But the one thing sulfites do not cause is headaches. I can hear you saying, “But how
come I get a headache every time I drink wine?” There are many
reasons headaches occur (trust me, I know) but the headache
people get from wine is probably from histamines. Histamines are
found in the grape skins. Red wine has a higher level of histamines
because they “macerate” (soak) in the skins to extract more color,
flavor and tannins. Among other things, the flavonoids and tannins that release histamines also preserve the wine. By the way, because of these attributes red wine requires less sulfites than white
wine. So what’s the take away? If you are in the 1% of people who
suffer from sulfite allergies, you may want to avoid wine. If you
are the vast majority who thought sulfites caused wine headaches,
you may try taking an antihistamine before consuming wine…and
call me in the morning.
