First Day Hikes

at Cama Beach and Camano Island State Parks. Jan. 1 is a free day
for State parks. Each park will host two guided hikes; Noon and
2:00 p.m. CISP Noon hike is 2.8 mile loop and 2 pm is a 1 mile loop.
Cama Noon hike is .75 mile loop and 2 pm is 2.3 mile loop. Cama
Noon hike will be for families, with information for kids and the
young at heart. Shorter hikes at both parks will be at a leisurely pace
with stops to allow for photography, description of the area, history,
animals and plants. Longer hikes will be primarily for exercise with
minimal stops. The CISP longer hike will include steps both uphill
and downhill. Well behaved dogs on leash will be allowed. Light
snacks will be served at the end of the hikes. More information; Tina

FORTE: Music. Dance. Art will be sponsoring their 6th annual “POLAR
PLUNGE”! We will provide an after the plunge hot spiced apple cider,
coffee or tea, and fabulous hot chili & corn bread to warm you up!
Meet at Forte’ . Music .Dance .Art at 12PM, January 1st. We will walk
to the Utsalady Beach and clean up the area where we will plunge.
It’s our way to help start off the year with a beautiful beach! Last year
we had 47 people join us for the event & would love to break that
record this year! We welcome people to come cheer us on as it is not
necessary to take the plunge, but if you plan to plunge bring a towel
and protective foot wear.

9:50am – 12:00pm at Camano Island State Park, 2269 Lowell Point
Rd, Camano Island. Meet at the picnic shelter near the boat ramp.
The walk includes 2 elevation gains of about 50’ with the rest of the
walk fairly level. The trail is 2.6 miles long with excellent views of
Saratoga Passage and Elger Bay including a walk through a beautiful “fern grotto” and ravine. The pace is moderate and the walks take
place rain or shine. Walks are cancelled if there is snow or extremely
high winds. Walkers are asked to wear clothing appropriate for
weather conditions including sturdy shoes or boots. Discover Pass
required. No dogs please.

Komodo Comedy
with Hans Kim, Little Ben, Simon Kaufman “The Big Funny” & Travis
Simmons – 7pm at the Conway Muse – $10. LittleBen – The Funny
Man is a comedy host/comedian who has been performing and
hosting comedy for over 3 years. Travis Simmon got 2nd place in
the 2013 Big Sky Comedy Competition and 2nd runner-up in the
Seattle International Comedy Competition. Simon’s comedy is cerebral but not stuffy and therefore works for all different types of
audiences. Hans Kim – is new to comedy and will be opening up.
He’s very funny and was just a finalist in The Seattle Comedy Competition so there is a buzz about him lately.

Nationally recognized artist Michele Rushworth will be giving a talk
about her career painting oil portraits of famous subjects all over
the United States. The Camano Arts Association is presenting her
as their featured speaker for January. Michele has painted the official portraits of nine state governors including Washington Governors Locke and Gregoire which now hang in the Capitol building
in Olympia, and portraits of UW President Mark Emmert, Seattle
Symphony Conductor Gerard Schwarz, along with portraits for the
Pentagon, the US Capitol, the US Coast Guard and Department of
Commerce, the CEO’s of many corporations…. and beautiful portraits of families in many states. Rushworth also paints landscapes
in oils and will feature several of the paintings recently shown at
the Fountainhead Gallery in Seattle. Come join us to hear this acclaimed artist talk about her work. Camano Center, 606 Arrowhead

based singer songwriter originally from a little town outside Seattle
called Kenmore, WA. Most people go there for the bowling alley and
karaoke bar. I have been singing and performing since I could talk,
and writing music since I was 19. Zach Broocke – born in Milwaukee, WI, grew up listening to Jim Croce, Harry Chapin, Cat Stevens,
and a lot of country tunes ala Willie Nelson, Don Williams, George
Jones, Merle Haggard. Discovering he had a passion for songwriting Zach traveled to Boston to spend time compiling the songs that
would make up his debut release.

S.O.S.L. (Survivors of Suicide Loss) Support Group Our communities are
growing in numbers of people who have lost a loved one, friend, family
member, co-worker, classmate or another to suicide. This group is a support group to help those of us who are grieving and surviving suicide loss.

toast. So let’s all raise our glasses….
Here’s to 2016 being a year of overall self-improvement (we
could all use that, right?), to setting and reaching goals, to exercise
and healthy eating, and to becoming more self aware, kind and
open-minded.
Here’s to an optimistic look on the future of our country, the
land of the free and the brave (thank you service members!). As
we select a new President, here’s to wisdom to choose the best
person to lead America on a path of peace, strength, growth, advancement, safety and compassion.
Here’s to a year of less violence and more knowledge about
mental illness, terrorism, and the correct decision on our gun laws.
Here’s to keeping our schools safe so our children can concentrate
on learning and to keeping our businesses safe so the employers
and employees can concentrate on success.
Here’s to taking more time away from the computer, smartphone, television and gaming devices. Here’s to making family
dinnertime and conversation a priority, maybe even the highlight
of the day. Here’s to reaching out to ailing parents and grandparents and valuing the time we have left with them on earth. Here’s
to visiting relatives and friends we haven’t seen in a while and to
building stronger relationships with the people we care about.
And of course, here’s to appreciating the opportunities to sip

The beginning of a new communication system came to the Twin
Cities and environs in 1958, when the pioneer People’s Telephone
Company sold its interests to its competitor -- West Coast Telephone. The $18,000 price was but a drop in the bucket compared
to the cost of modernizing the rural exchange, which was still operating with 10-party lines in Cedarhome and other areas. By 1960 a
microwave station had been installed on Camano Island, and bids
were called for construction of a telephone building with garage.
More improvements were in the offing…even dial phones by 1961,
said West Coast officials.
Up Cedarhome way, Harold and Henry Klett gave their customers, and themselves, a Christmas present…a new and modern
store building to replace the one that had been the supermarket
for up-hill pioneers for 61 years -- since 1891 to be exact. Beautifully equipped, the new store was ready shortly before the holidays,
1957, and celebrated with a gala opening.
In Stanwood, the oldest remaining hostelry, the turn of-the-century-or-earlier Stanwood Hotel was treated to a refurbishing that
transformed its austere exterior into one of contemporary mood.
Some 8,000 feet of cedar siding and 579 gallons of stain were used
in the $10,000 facelift initiated by the Thomas Craigs, who had become the new owners in 1956.
North Market Street took on a new look in 1957 when Dr. R.C.
Fisher’s new clinic was completed. The modern structure, with
landscaping and paved off-street parking, was a pleasant addition
to the local scene, architecturally, as well as medically. Its offices,
treatment rooms and equipment added a new dimension to area’s
health care facilities.
Unfortunately, a sad note was interjected in the changing scene
with the passing of four well known pioneers of the Stilly. They were
Peter Henning, a farmer, banker, road builder and county commissioner who came to this county in 1883; George Ketchum, who arrived in 1884 and established the third general store in Stanwood;
Francis Giard, who came via boat to Utsalady in 1889 and became
East Stanwood’s first mayor and a 56-year director of the town’s first
bank; George Mitchell, the area’s first attorney, who practiced here
for some 25 years. Prominent in community affairs, he also was one
of the early publishers of the Stanwood Tidings(now the News)….A
foursome, whose vision and talents did much for the community.

Mushroom sculptures for the garden

With all the cool rainy weather its been perfect weather for mushrooms, sprouting up all over the place. About 4 years ago I read
about these mushrooms in Family Fun Magazine. They were supposed to be for the kids to play with but I decided to make them
into garden decorations. Four years later and they are still holding
up strong.
MATERIALS: Set of stainless steel bowls, red spray paint (I used tractor paint and it has withstood 4 Canadian winters), white or cream
colored acrylic paint, paintbrush, a good outdoor sealer (I use Decoart Duraclear Varnish in gloss) a drill, a nice log approx. 18-24 inches
high (choose one with lots of good bark texture), some heavy duty
screws 3 inches or so(don’t use nails as they may split your log)
DIRECTIONS: 1. You want to first prepare your bowls for painting. Using Windex or Fantastik, clean the outside of the bowl. You can also
handwash in hot soapy water. Sometimes they have an oily film on
them and you want to degrease them. Next take some sandpaper
and lightly rough them up, not a lot as you don’t want the scratches
to show thru the paint. 2. Take them outside and lay on some newspaper. Give them a good spray with your red tractor paint. I found
mine in the hardware section of Wal mart. Let dry and then give
them another coat. You don’t want any drips so watch closely as you
spray. While you have the spray paint out take the screws you plan
on using a give the tops of them a quick spray. 3. When dry start
painting spots directly onto the red paint. You want to vary the sizes .
Let dry and give them an extra coat of paint ( or two). 4. Let the paint
dry for a full 24hrs ( even if it feels dry it won’t be cured, if you seal to
early the paint may lift off on you ). 5. Paint a good coat of sealer on.
Let dry and then do a second coat. 6. The next step is to make sure
you log is level, you may have to cut the ends until it sits right. 7. Drill
two holes in the center of the bowl, go slowly as you don’t want to
damage the paint. If you do damage the paint you can do a touch
up once your mushroom is put together. Place bowl on log and mark
where the two holes are. 8. Take off bowl and pre drill your holes in
the log. Put the bowl on top of the log and line up the holes. Now
take the screws you have painted and attach the bowl to the log. Try
to get as tight as you can so it won’t wobble. Do any paint touchups.
9. You now have some great mushrooms for the garden. They look
especially nice in the fall with all those complimentary colors in the
leaves. Make one or three or five. I have kept mine outside for four
years thru all types of weather and they still look great!

Jax came to CASA as an injured stray who was never
claimed by an owner. Jax is as cute as they come, but
he does have a few quirks. Beyond the few quirks Jax is
a fabulous canine companion! He’s immaculately potty
trained and would rather risk his own bladder than potty in his crate or inside. He has been fine loose around
the CASA cats, but he can be a tad bit bossy with male
dogs his size. This little guy is incredibly playful, terribly
funny, and loves a good walk.

The sanctuary sits on 39 acres of meadow and forestland with
ponds and trails. Excursions into the woods are enjoyed daily,
sometimes by groups of pigs on social outings and also by individual pigs exploring.
All the pigs roam freely choosing where they sleep, graze, root
and explore. They choose from many structures to sleep in, from
the large barn to smaller sheds and huts and even a few cozy suites
for two under the trees. All sleeping areas are filled with soft hay for
bedding. The pigs choose their own schedules with some pigs getting up early and others sleeping in. They form lifelong friendships
and social groups.
Pigs Peace Sanctuary is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization (Tax
ID: 91-2005854) dedicated to providing a safe home for unwanted,
abused or neglected animals in need and is committed to spreading the message of compassion and respect for all animals. Founded in 1994, the sanctuary provides medical care, a healthy diet,
socialization, a permanent home and loving kindness. Our other
main purpose is to educate the public about the characteristics and
needs of pigs as well as the abuses often associated with exotic pet
fads.
We specialize in the lives of pigs but we also have welcomed
other animals in need and are currently home to ponies, horses,
llamas, dogs, cats, chickens, sheep and turkeys.
I have always loved pigs and all animals. I was given a secondhand piglet, Fern, and I fell in love. As Fern grew up I knew that
I had room for more pigs, so I called a well-known shelter. To my
dismay, I discovered that they didn’t help pigs. That very day there
was a pig to be destroyed who, after he had been found wandering
city streets, was impounded and locked in quarantine. He became
the sanctuary’s first rescue, wich led to research that revealed the
dilemma that the potbellied pig fad has created.
Can you imagine surviving: Hungry day in and day out? Beatings with a 2 x 4? Being thrown from a car? Being left abandoned?
Living in a closet in your own feces? Being lost for weeks with no
place to sleep? Being in solitary isolation for years? Witnessing your
kind killed before your eyes? No one deserves this and yet these are
the stories of the “survivors” who live at the sanctuary. Some never
knew love and compassion until they arrived here at the sanctuary,
and here they blossom with healthy meals, cozy warm beds and

Try the latest fitness craze:
No-Impact Yoga
Not long ago, I tried out a fitness class called sports yoga. I stuck
with it for what seemed like forever, by which I mean nearly four
sessions. There was just one small problem: sports yoga was really
hard. Try as I may, I could never get my left foot to wrap around the
back of my neck. I never got the knack for how to balance my body
off the ground using just my thumbs.
So I hung up my yoga mat. My body is no longer capable of contorting like a human pretzel. And before you know it, I’ll be celebrating my 80th birthday. (Okay, technically not for another 20 years,
but in geologic terms, that’s the blink of an eye).
Like millions of middle-aged Americans, I thought I was too old
for yoga – until now! Thanks to my new, exclusive, breakthrough
yoga system called No-Impact Yoga, I no longer shudder at the
sight of a yoga mat. The No-Impact Yoga system is radically different from any fitness system on the market today. Unlike traditional
yoga, there is none of that awkward, painful attempting to touch
your left elbow to your right butt cheek stuff. (Okay, admit it. You
just tried to touch your left elbow to your right butt cheek, didn’t
you?) It’s revolutionary. And you’re guaranteed not to break a sweat
– or your money back.
Here is a sneak peak at a few exciting exercises you’ll find in my
patent-pending No-Impact Yoga system:
Warm-up exercises:
Resting Cat: Curl into a ball with your back gently curved, while
grasping a fluffy pillow. Avoid kneading the person next to you
– unless they’re a cat lover.
Seated Arm Incline: While seated on the floor, extend your legs comfortably in front of you, shoulder-width apart. Extend your arms 6 to
10 inches behind your back. Hold this position for 30 - 60 breaths.
If you experience any exertion or fatigue, return to the Resting Cat
pose.
Core Routines:
Sideways-Facing Dog: Inspired by the traditional yoga Downward-

Facing Dog pose, this slight modification uses the same classic
V-shaped stance, but from the sideways position, with your body
in full contact with the floor, in the right lateral recumbent stance.
Hold for five minutes. Flip over to the left lateral recumbent pose.
Maintain a vacuous start at the ceiling.
Fallen Warrior: Most Yogans are familiar with the classic Warrior I and
Warrior 2 positions. This variation (seen at right) recreates the classic stance of a fallen warrior (1 or 2) after said warrior has been killed
in battle. Assume the prone position and adjust your arms and legs
to emulate the classic “chalk outline” pose. For the advanced version, pour some ketchup under you so it oozes along the floor, so it
looks like you were actually killed.
Inverted Plank: One of the most challenging positions in traditional
yoga is the plank position (think push-up). This modification inverts
the traditional pose, as you assume a supine position with your
arms pressed firmly upward towards the ceiling, directly above your
shoulders. Maintain this pose until your arms get tired or you need
to scratch your nose.
Really Happy Baby Pose: For most yogaphiles, the well-known
Happy Baby pose (below left) is awkward, requiring you to lie on
your back with legs elevated, while grabbing your toes. In this less
arduous modification, maintain the supine position at all times,
knees gently bent, feet firmly planted on the floor, while sucking
your thumb.

Cool-down exercises:
Hibernating Bear: At first glance, this pose may appear similar to
the Resting Cat warm-up pose. Maybe even at second glance. But
this pose adds complexity by requiring simultaneous use of an eye
pillow and comfy blanket. Maintain a sideways horizontal posture,
knees slightly bent, for 20 minutes. For the advanced version, maintain this position while snoring.
Corpse Pose: This pose (seen at right) is similar to the Hibernating
Bear pose but in the prone position and held for a longer duration – approximately ten hours. This pose is best performed on a
Sealy PosturePedic mattress. For the advanced version, attempt the
corpse pose without the mattress – on a sidewalk – after consuming large quantities of alcohol.

On the days just before Thanksgiving more than 20 members of the
Stanwood Camano Rotary Club took their annual post outside Haggen Food and Pharmacy seeking community support for the food
bank. Community members answered the call by donating more
than 1,280 pounds of food and $1,293.57 in cash donations which
will be used by the food bank to provide support to those in need.
In addition to the food and cash support the club recently provided
a significant number of winter coats to the food bank in partnership
with Operation Warm with funds raised by the club. “Rotary members are strong supporters of the community,” said Scott Thomas,
President of the club, “the food bank provides essentials to those
who find themselves in a tight spot and this year it is especially important.” The Stanwood Camano Rotary Club will provide funding
for community and international projects during the next twelve
months including warm coats for families in need, student scholarships, foreign exchange opportunities and the Imagination Library
which provides free monthly new books to children from birth to
age five within the Stanwood Camano School District’s boundaries.

There’s going to be a new type of non-emergency medical program in town. Camano Island Fire and Rescue is developing a community paramedicine program to improve patient care and reduce
emergency service costs for taxpayers. Camano CARES, which
stands for Community Assistance, Referral, and Education Service,
is taking shape and the fire district expects to launch the program
in early 2016. The program is one of several community paramedicine programs launched in Washington State to respond to
changes in health care law. Paramedic Ken Drewry, who serves as
the medical services officer for the fire district, is coordinating the
new program. Drewry says that he is excited about the program’s
potential to improve patient care. He can recall several cases in his
career where ambulance crews would transport the same person
to the hospital on a daily basis. Camano CARES allows paramedics
to connect patients they visit on calls with resources and programs
instead of costly hospital visits. “We can actually provide solutions
instead of just putting a band aid on someone’s problem,” said Ken
Drewry. “This will reduce non-emergency calls to 911 and lower
emergency service costs for the community.” Drewry brought together representatives from the Island County Public Health Department, the Washington State Department of Social and Health
Services, Senior Services of Island County, Safe Harbor Free Clinic,
Island County Sheriff’s office, and two auxiliary groups that support the fire district. Participants identified three demographic
groups that could benefit from the Camano CARES program: the
homeless, people living with a chronic illness, and the elderly.
Paramedics and firefighters are often the first people to have contact with homeless families or individuals. Camano CARES wants
to connect people to area shelters, food banks, housing, and medical care. Paramedics also encounter a significant number of people
living with a chronic illness, or struggling with mental health and
substance abuse issues. Being able to connect those people to
other resources – like outpatient care, counselling or rehabilitation facilities – is a better option than a hospital. “A lot of people
need services that a hospital just doesn’t provide,” says Drewry. The
elderly are a key constituency group, as well. According to the Center for Disease Control, more than one-third of adults over 65 years
of age fall each year. Falls can lead to hip fractures, traumatic brain
injuries, and are the leading cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries in
older adults – and they are mostly preventable. Camano CARES is
working with Senior Services of Island County to develop a slip and
fall prevention program. Many seniors also feel isolated because of
mobility issues, and can suffer from depression. The program also
plans to connect seniors to nutrition, counselling and transportation services on the island. “It’s important for seniors to be able to
‘age in place’,” said Drewry. “Community paramedics can help them
make the connections they need to remain in their homes as long
as possible.” The fire district plans to monitor the community impact and cost savings the plan has on emergency services delivery
over the next few years. Short-term, Drewry says that he is excited
to see changes at the fire district. “How we deliver emergency
services is changing,” he said. “Camano Island Fire and Rescue is
adapting to better serve our community.” Camano Island Fire and
Rescue provides fire suppression, emergency medical service and
technical rescue to 16,000 people over 40 square miles.

Island County Coastal Volunteer of the Year Award. The award
is named to honor the memory of Jan Holmes, an Island County
resident and WSU Island County Beach Watcher who was an exemplary marine scientist, educator and champion for stewardship of
the marine environment. In recognition of the continuing need for
volunteers to carry on this important cause, the Jan Holmes Island
County Coastal Volunteer of the Year Award is presented annually
to one individual engaged in service, science or outreach relating
to the health of Island County’s marine environment and whose
work adds to knowledge about and/or protection of county marine waters and coastal resources. Nominations are open to anyone,
regardless of organization or affiliation. The intent of the award is
to encourage and recognize the achievements of volunteers who
work to understand, protect and restore the marine waters and
coastal resources of Island County. The award is sponsored by the
Island County Marine Resources Committee (MRC), Sound Water
Stewards (SWS) of Island County, and Washington State University
(WSU) Island County Extension. A committee representing the
three sponsoring organizations will select one winner. The award
will be presented on February 6, 2016 at South Whidbey High
School during the opening ceremonies of Sound Waters University

that Skeeter and Salty Dawg had big plans to turn the abandoned
5th wheel at the intersection of Camano Hill and E. Camano into
a much-needed source of revenoo for the State, County, and us.
Despite the yawning fissure of distrust between them Southenders
and us’ns up here in the north, we felt that this here business endevor might just heal the rift. But, alas and alack, it was not to be.
Our plans for a Motel 3 and drive-by pot stand apparently run contrary to one or two county rules, local zoning and agin the sensibilities of some of the locals. And of course, with the local sheriff
constabulary just down the road, we felt that increased attention
and surveillance of our plans was probably not a good omen. So, it
with heavy hearts and still empty pocketbooks that we announce
the termination of our plans. Within the next few weeks, you will
lose this subject of much mirth, debate, outrage and more because
we will be taking it apart and disposing of it. It will be missed. I
mean, what else is everyone going to talk about over their morning
lattes?” – Sadly, Salty Dawg.

Grant Recipients
Five recipients were chosen this year to receive music grants
through the Stanwood-Camano Area Foundation. The grants, totaling $1,900, were awarded on December 15th to local middle school
and high school students. Kate Filippov, Chandler Long, and Heidy
Zuniga, all students at Stanwood Middle School, were selected to
receive three Jon Metzger music grants. Two Bruce Kollmar music
grants were awarded to two Stanwood High School students, Montana Mattson and Marnina Willard. Congratulations to an outstanding group of young people who have worked hard, demonstrated

To cut heat loss, close your drapes at night and open them during
the day to let the sun in and warm your home. Check your heating ducts to ensure they’re properly sealed and insulated. This can
cut up to 25 percent off your heating bill. Lower heating costs and
improve air quality by cleaning or changing your furnace air filters
every two months during the heating season. Caulk and weatherstrip windows and doors. Set your thermostat at 68 degrees or lower
when you’re home. For every three degrees you lower it from your
normal setting, you save 10 percent on heating. Lower it to 55 degrees when you go to bed or when you’re not at home. If your home
has a fireplace, keep the damper closed when you’re not using it and
use a glass screen to minimize the heat loss. Dress warmer when the
days get colder. It’s less expensive and more efficient than turning

Camano Lutheran Church - Celebrating
125 Years

Camano Lutheran Church is celebrating its 125th anniversary
and its Scandinavian history is rooted in the emergent years of Camano Island. The earliest recorded beginnings were in 1876 when
missionary Pastor Reverend Carlson came up from California and
held a meeting at the home of Nels d’Joruep. Reverend Carlson
conducted baptism, and communion services at this meeting. As
time went on, services were held at various homes or in the large
hall at Utsalady. This group of Utsalady Lutherans were active but
not organized. They dreamed of formally organizing a church to
strengthen their Christian ties and commitment. Then on December 17, 1890, with the help of Reverend Christian Joergenson, they
met in a hall at Utsalady and voted to form a congregation and
thus it all began. A committee of three was elected to draw up a
constitution and they named the church, The Lutheran Evangelical
Congregation of Camano Island.
For many years, the new congregation met at the little one room
school house located across the road from our present church.
During the early years, the women of Camano Lutheran actively
participated in the church’s mission. The “Sewing Society” organized with the aim to raise enough money for a Norwegian religious school for the children of the church, for example they raised
$80 at their first auction sale on Thanksgiving Day, which was then
to become a yearly event. In 1897 the Ladies Aid purchased a Kimball pump organ for the church at the cost of $50 from the Berger
Music House in Mount Vernon. This organ was kept in the little
public schoolhouse where the services were held. It was so precious that after each time it was used, it was pushed back into the
box in which it has been shipped, to protect it. This beloved organ
can still be seen in the Narthex as you enter the church.
In the early days of church business meetings, it was customary
for the pastor to serve as the chairman. These meetings always
began with devotions, singing of hymns, scripture readings, and
prayer. In 1895, membership was 41 (21 adults and 20 children). At
an annual meeting in 1898, it was voted that they should have six
weeks of religious school in the Livingston Bay schoolhouse since
it was not used by the public in the winter on Sunday. John Esdal

had the responsibility of finding and hiring an instructor. However,
a conference was held in 1900 by all the churches served by Pastor
Foss to determine the possibility of calling a permanent instructor
for a combined religious school.
Pastor Foss reported that in 1890, there were 21 services, 9
confirmed, 14 communicants, 33 days of religious school and
membership numbered 47. These numbers reflect the fact that
for their present time and for some time into the future, the church
would share the pastor with the other Lutheran Churches in the
area. Their services were held in the native language, Norwegian
customs were routine and all members Scandinavian.
Also in 1900, Sivert Johnson and J.P. Larson gave a piece of
ground on which to build a new church and as a place for the
school house. The new building was to be 26’x43’x14’ with an
addition of 14’ which was probably for the chancel. All lumber
and materials had to be transported by horse drawn wagons over
primitive roads with the only access to the island by the Stillaguamish ferry. The trustees were asked to secure help for clearing
the land, leveling the ground, and arranging for a place to tie up
teams of horses. With the church nearing completing, the congregation asked Reverend Tjernagle to send for a bell, 36 inches
in diameter. The church building was to be a copy of many of the
country churches in Scandinavia with altar and a statue of Christ
by Thorwalssen. J. P. Larson was the principal builder of the alter,
assisted by K. P. Frostad. J.P. Larson displayed a fine gift of workmanship in the carving and inlays of the altar and pulpit. Eleven
different exotic woods were used. These pieces of wood were gifts
to Larson from captains of sailing ships that came to pick up lumber at the Utsalady mill where Mr. Larson worked. The pulpit was
placed where the lecture is now and was on a tall pedestal. The
base has since been cut off and place in the basement of Camano
Lutheran Church.
1904 The congregation voted to become a member of the
Norwegian Synod of America and later changed the name of
the church to Camano Lutheran Church as the previous one was
considered too long. In 1906, T.W. Magelssen organized a young
peoples’ society called “Fram” which translates into ‘forward’. This
society later gave the church a very beautiful brass chandelier with
eight lamps with crystals.
The plans for the dedication ceremonies were scheduled to follow the annual synod meeting at Silvana in July 1906. On July 9,
the new church was dedicated to God as his temple, in which all
could go for meditation and worship and to listen to the preaching of God’s word and to join in the singing of hymns of prayer
and praise. Several pastors who had attended the synod meeting
at Silvana took part in the dedication and many of the delegates
and members from other Lutheran churches attended. Reverend
J.H. Preus beautified the service with his very fine tenor voice by
singing ‘The Holy City”. A group of very ordinary Christians accomplished a very extraordinary mission. The church was built with all
voluntary labor and with the cost of: $9.60 for the statue. $70.40
for the bell. $904 for the church.
Later, in 1956, Dr. Haavick would procured stained glass windows
from Trinity Lutheran Church in Parkland and a stainless steel cross
to be placed on the steeple. The names below the stained glass

education building, and add a multipurpose room with kitchen.
They would update their organ twice and remodel their kitchen
once. They would work continually on the maintenance, heating
system, plumbing, and roofing of the church and would place
their church on the State Register of historical sites and burn their
mortgage.
The people of Camano Lutheran would go on to actively participate in the Alaska Yukon Pacific World’s Fair, start a choir,
build a Sunday School program, have family nights, men’s fellowship groups and women’s Bible study. They would add a Luther
League, Summary Bible School program, a preschool, a daycare
and a playground. They would change liturgies, hymnals, and
worship times. They would add communion at all services receiving it sometimes by intinction and sometimes at the rail. They
would participate in programs such as Promise, Prayer and Praise,
An Experiment in Faith, A Shepherd Program, Moving Back into
the Neighborhood and offered the devotional booklets, Portal
of Prayer and Christ in Our Home. They would keep hundreds
warm with quilts and cloth babies in layettes. They would feed
with the hungry, help the homeless, and care about their church
family near and neighbor far. They would offer glorious music to
the masses.
And over the years, they would wrestle with the challenges of
the church: should services be led only in the Norwegian tongue,
what about dancing, alcohol, and women in leadership roles?
They would reexamine worship service protocol and liturgies,
church doctrine, budgets and the merging of synods, issues of
cultural change, and the effects of poverty. All would test their
priorities and mission.
But most of all, they would often and always celebrate the Good
News, offering welcome and comfort to all who would enter their
doors. Through 125 years they have endured
and like a good marriage, have persevered through the pleasures
and pains and remained His faithful people.

CRUST: 1 1/2 c. crushed pretzels • 3/4 c. butter, melted • 3 T. granulated sugar
FILLING: 1 (8 oz.) pkg. cream cheese, softened • 1 c. confectioners’
sugar • 1 (8 oz.) tub Cool Whip
TOPPING: 1 (6 oz.) pkg. raspberry Jell-O • 2 c. boiling hot water • 1
(12 oz.) pkg. frozen raspberries
CRUST: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Place pretzels in a 1 gallon
size re-sealable bag and crush with a rolling pin. Add melted butter and sugar to the bag, re-seal and mix well. Pat mixture into a
9x13-inch baking dish and bake for 10 minutes. Let cool before
adding the other layers. FILLING: In a large bowl, beat cream
cheese and confectioners’ sugar, until smooth. Gently fold in Cool
Whip until well combined. Spread evenly over top of cooled crust.
TOPPING: In a saucepan, bring water to a boil, remove from heat
and whisk in Jell-O until dissolved. Set aside to cool slightly (about
10-15 minutes) then quickly stir in frozen raspberries, immediately
pour over top of cream cheese filling, spread evenly. Place in the
refrigerator and allow Jell-O to set up completely. Serves 12-16

Chocolate Covered Strawberry Footballs
Enjoy these chocolate covered strawberries while routing for your favorite team! Go Hawks!
INGREDIENTS: 24 strawberries • 8 oz. dark semi-sweet chocolate • 1
oz. white vanilla frosting • 1 Ziploc bag or piping bag with a #2 tip
DIRECTIONS: 1. Rinse and pat dry strawberries. 2. In a microwave
safe bowl, microwave the chocolate on high for 30 seconds. Stir
and repeat process until chocolate is melted. Be sure to watch your
chocolate closely to avoid over heating. 3. Take strawberry by top
or leaves and dip in bowl of chocolate and swirl carefully until it is
fully coated. Once coated, hold strawberry over bowl and let excess
chocolate drip. Place on waxed paper to cool. 4. Fill a Ziploc bag
or piping bag fitted with a #2 tip with vanilla frosting. Then pipe
lines across like in our photo. 5. Place in fridge to allow chocolate to
harden and serve to guests once ready.

What an amazing time to celebrate a New Year filled with all kinds
of possibilities, new ideas, and goals.
I have never been much into New Year resolutions, but I do like
to create new goals each year and see how they transpire, and develop into fruition. I wish you all the very best year filled with health
and happiness, for if you have these two things you have it all.
In Journey with Jan we explore a new word to use in our ever
expanding vocabulary. Just think how smart we will be next year
when 2016 comes to its end.
This word is MERCURIAL (Pronounced mur-CURE-ee-uhl). It is an
adjective; and describes a person or event that is liable to a sudden
unpredictable change. When used in a real estate situation, I can
use it in the following sentence. “My experience has taught me to
provide patience and understanding to the shifting interest of mercurial home shoppers or mercurial property shoppers.” (Mercurial
can also describe someone’s tendancy to hanger, however it does
not have to be used in a negative way.)
I am excited to share our Camano Island market statistics. Our volume of sales have continued during the holidays, and it is amazing.
The new market stats also show a steady “pending” activity through
the end of November (up 59% over last year). This is very promising for a healthy new start to our 1st quarter of 2016. It is also a
perfect time to put your home or property on the market. There are
serious buyers still waiting for their ideal property. Our inventory is
low with approximately 115 homes on the market versus in 2014 at
this time having 179 homes for sale. You can see this is an awesome
time to sell and also a fantastic time to find your home or vacation

Bob the Baptist
Bob the Baptist lives up the hollow where the dirt road south of
me dead ends in a swampy cul-de-sac. You look hard you can see
past the abandoned cars, rotted boats, rusty appliances, kids’ toys,
broken furniture and busted machinery to where Bob’s shack leans
into the last century. Just to be sure nobody will steal this stockpile
of valuable rusty corroded parts from his junkyard covered with
leaf mulch and blackberry vines, Bob has nailed handwritten signs
every few hundred feet: NO TRESSPASING POSTED KEEP OUT!! PRIVIT PROPPERTY, like anyone would venture into his place. By the
driveway or entrance or whatever it is that isn’t maintained and
is overgrown to the point any vehicle trying to drive in would be
scratched to bare metal by berry thorns and cedar limbs and lost
equipment, he’s nailed a plywood plank painted black with white
words: JESUS IS COMMING SOON!!
These are the End Times, Bob tells us neighbors. South End
Times, anyway, if Bob’s place comes under scrutiny. It looks like
Armageddon hit yesterday. Windows are broken out and covered
with plastic that’s now tattered. Doors hang off their hinges, usually open winter or spring. The first time I went back there looking
for my dog who’d wandered off, I walked through an open door
with books and magazines strewn everywhere, thinking it was an
anteway or a porch … until I realized to my horror I was deep into
his house. Believe me, I backed out of there fast as anything, expecting a shotgun blast from Bob the Baptist. He walked up a minute after I’d exited his home sweet hovel and demanded to know
who I was, what I wanted, why I was there. “Lost dog,” I mumbled.
“We’re ALL lost,” he fairly howled. “We’re all lost and we don’t even
know it!!” Tobacco stains ran down his matted beard and his eyes
bulged like King Lear in a room full of psychiatrists.
Bob’s okay, actually, reasonably harmless and even sociable
occasionally. The neighbors hear him once in awhile, exhorting
whatever demons drive him day in and day out. Apparently the
demons aren’t listening. Awhile back we heard he used to be a
minister over the other side of the mountains. Heard it from one of
his flock. Bob had had an affair with the local TV station’s weathergirl and his wife had run off with the church’s deacon. The weather
lady moved up to a megawatt Atlanta station and Bob was banished to the wilderness. I guess it makes some sense he ended
up down here. Although … Bob still hasn’t figured out most of us
don’t think of this as punishment or penance. Hell, I guess, is in the
eye of the beholder too.

Where Does the Time Go?
Another trip around the sun, many things are yet undone. It’s time
again when people make New Year’s Resolutions that stick for maybe an hour or two. Last year in my first Crab Cracker article, I revealed
a simple formula for a resolution that lasts. Forget diet and exercise.
Resolve to do what you really want to do.

My 2015 resolution was “Bigger Ideas, Better Planning, More Fun,
Now!” It worked. As I found events in the Crab Cracker, I filled in my
calendar and got out to do things instead of forgetting and staying
home. That resolution worked all year. I’m already marking events in
my 2016 calendar.
Next I want to finish several unfinished writing projects. I enjoy
writing, but it’s hard getting started. I’m a chronic procrastinator.
I’m highly distractible, especially by the very computer that I use to
write. I need a serious resolution. Will it stick?
My resolution is Focus and Get Started. That’s it, clean and simple. I
have a new kitchen timer. I’ll set it for 15 uninterrupted minutes and
simply get started. I’ll pick one project, set out steps and a timeline,
and keep track in my calendar. I’ve made a Daily Checklist to create a
good work habit. See? I know just what to do. I’ve watched all sorts
of productivity seminars when procrastinating . . .
I’m telling the world that I’m going to finish 12 songs and a children’s
