Boy Scout Troop 46 will conduct their annual “Tree-cycle”. We provide for Christmas Tree curb side pickup for areas that received an
envelope as well as a central drop off location at Camano Plaza parking lot from 10 am-2 pm to make it easy for residents to dispose of
their Christmas Trees in an ecologically responsible manner. If you
did not receive an envelope and need your tree picked up, or for

Stanwood Lacrosse Free Clinic
At Soccer First, 19805 74th Ave NE, Arlington (behind the old Haggen). Clinics are for players in Stanwood-Camano, Arlington, & Lakewood school districts. Sessions will allow returning players to begin
to refresh their skills & introduce new players or potential players

Louisiana, French speaking people pass down a culture hundreds of

Evening Low Tide Beach Walk
at Camano Island State Park at 8pm. Park in the boat launch parking
lot & meet at the boat ramp. Park volunteers will be on hand to help
you identify intertidal animals. You may see chitons, sea anemones,
nudibranchs, crabs, seastars, snails, tubeworms, barnacles, etc. See
what impact the Seastar Wasting Syndrome virus has had on our intertidal seastar populations. Dress appropriately, take a bright flashlight (with fresh batteries & a back-up flashlight too), and waterproof
boots or sturdy shoes (walking on beach cobbles and rocks can be
difficult). These walks are very informal. You can head home at any
time. The walk may be cancelled depending on weather conditions.

Jan. 18 to find out if the beach walk has been cancelled. Low tide

“Did You Know?”
Here is the first,
of a continuing
history series.
was built in 1895. It was owned by the dairy farmers. It was a place
where they could bring their milk and have it converted into butter. From there, the butter was shipped to various places to be
sold. When the Creamery first started it was $3,000 in debt. By
1896, the debts were all paid off. The Creamery was so successful
because it became known for making “the best butter this side of
the Cascade Mountains.” During its operation, the Creamery took
in about 6,000 pounds of milk a day. In about 1914, the Creamery
was shut down and turned into a cheese factory which operated
for a short while. The Stanwood Cooperative Creamery Building
still stands on top of the hill overlooking East Stanwood.

“Apparently the rumors reached Rome --- folks down here on the
South End are crabbing without licenses, without proper or legal
equipment, without regard for managing the crustacean resource
--- so they’ve sent the centurions down to enforce the Law. It came
as quite a shock to Poacher Paul on his first trip crabbing this season, not only to his poaching pride but to his wallet.
Martha on the bluff with her binoculars , sick of Paul’s seasonal
greed, called the Authorities. In short order the Game Warden
pulled up alongside Paul’s Boston Whaler and demanded to see
his license. Paul, never at a loss for words, informed the gendarme
he didn’t have one, had never had one and by Neptune he didn’t
need one now. He’s a South End Old Timer, Paul is, and an honorary member of the Take-All-You-Want Club. There’s a lot of members of that society and most of them aren’t old timers, they’re just
folks who have theirs and to hell with those who don’t.
They think government is just a bunch of imbeciles bent on keeping them from what is their God given right to take. More for me,
less for you. Actually, less for all of us, but when the crabs are gone,
they’ll blame the Department of Natural Resources for mismanagement, proof once again of government incompetence.

Down at the Marine a day later, Paul was still livid at this intrusion on his personal freedom. The warden, what Paul calls the Fish
Police, fined him for crabbing without a license, fined him for an
unlicensed boat, fined him for a trap without an escape hatch and
fined him for 15 crabs either the wrong sex or undersized or both.
He confiscated the traps and threw back all of Paul’s catch. It was
an expensive day of crabbing, for sure.
Paul, of course, vowed to show that Fish Cop who was boss. No
way was he buying a license, no way was he paying those fines,
no way was he backing down to the &#@!!* government and its
&%#@ stooges.

CAN MY CHILD’S CREDITORS GET MY MONEY?
“WHAT?!!!!!!!” You say. “Wait a minute, do I have to worry about
that now? How can that happen?” You ask. Well, let’s take a look.
You have a daughter or son who is financially irresponsible. He
shows up for the holidays in a new BMW which you couldn’t afford let alone him. You inquire as to how someone working the
French fryer at Burger King could afford such a vehicle and he
blows smoke up your skirt. You walk away wondering what planet
today’s youth came from. And then . . . you die. (Whoops.). If you
are single or you and your spouse die together your children will
probably inherit your estate, and if they inherit your estate and
are deeply in debt their creditors can get at the money you left
them in your will. (Ha, you will be paying for that BMW after all!).
So here’s what you do. Prepare a will that leaves your estate to a
person or institution as trustee for the children. You then direct
the trustee on how to distribute the estate. It can be a certain
percentage monthly or annually. It can be held in trust until the
child reaches a certain age. You choose. You can rule from the
grave. Nice huh? The trustee cannot be swayed by the pleadings
of the child. He/She must do what you dictate in the will or trust
document. Keep that in mind next time junior shows up wearing
a gold cross the size of a tree stump.

Lap Time
We all need lap time. If you’re not sure about this, ask a dog. Any
dog. The small ones will confirm this comfortably. The big ones like
labs and great danes are a bit more reluctant to confess the need,
but when asked with a sideways glance, they’ll blink and nod agreement while they try to clamber on board. Cats, on the other hand,
know their rights and your lap is in their union contract so don’t fight
it. What is it about a lap? They’ll hold about anything. Laps were
not built for napkins though. We’ve seen too many on the floor to
believe that. But laps are great for holding bowls of apples to be
peeled or peas to be shelled or a sweater being knitted. They can
be a center for watching the work ethic of old. However we must
admit they are actually built for kids. Who has not seen a Grandma with her lap at the ready, waiting for the little ones to come in
range? Kids are more like dogs than cats. A kid will sidle up to the
love and protection waiting in a grandma’s lap and glance around
to make sure no one is looking then take the plunge to comfort and
attention. Once there, it’s time for a hug or a tickle or a quiet ear of
listening. It’s a time for storybooks and maybe even a song or two.
But it is always a safe place, a place where corrections to behavior
are not bothered with, where acceptance of who we are is always at
the ready. It’s hard to be a lap. It’s hard to always be soft and accepting of what lands on us. We want to be clear that we are right and
proper people, worrying more about ourselves than others and a
good lap never does that. A good lap takes what comes and makes
it better. It might be a scrape on the knee or a wound to a heart, or a
small bird held in the hand of a young child. Or, if things are slow at
the old home place, it may be a dog with wet feet. But a lap always
has a job. And so do we.

How does weather affect our joints & energy? Did you ever know
someone who could “smell” snow or rain before it came? What
they “smell” is a change in the electrical charge in the air. It’s been
described as a “metallic” smell. All atoms have either a positive or
negative charge so they can bind to form molecules. As the barometer falls, the positive charge, or “ions” increase which causes
a depletion of cortisone in the body. This happens to all creatures
that have adrenal glands—in other words, all mammals. It means
that the pressure against our body drops as well, and our joints and
areas that are injured can begin to swell. Did you ever notice how
your cold or pain gets worse at night? Mine does. I understand pain,
as I have arthritis and fibromyalgia. This happen because our bodies
slow production of both adrenaline and cortisone in the evening so
we can go to sleep. It’s part of our circadian rhythm. So what can
we do to manage this, aside from moving?? Well, depending on the
problem, whether it is pain, mood, or energy, there are some solutions. If the problem is simply energy, then it will be useful to stay
away from simple carbohydrates such as sugar, starches, and junk
food. Eat foods that will sustain you and not bring the “crash” you
feel after that morning donut. Don’t assume that caffeine is the answer, either. Chronic pain, chronic fatigue and depression all present unique challenges. They all can be affected by nutrition, exercise, sunlight and barometric pressure. A good support is exercise;
simple stretching, beginner yoga, meditation. Essential oils in a
bath or shower help tremendously. Heatable wraps & socks also are

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), also known as the winter blues
or winter depression, affects half a million people around the world
every single year. Even though this condition afflicts people during
all seasons of the year, most people get it during the winter months
when natural sunlight is diminished; usually around September
and October, and start to feel better by April or May when spring
comes around. SAD, is defined as a type of depression that occurs
during the same season each year. WebMd, a website that covers
all types of medical conditions, stated, “It can sometimes be hard to
tell the difference between SAD and other types of depression because many of the symptoms are the same.” They listed symptoms
that include feelings of depression or anxiousness, loss of interest
in your usual activities, weight gain, eating more and craving carbohydrates (such as bread and pasta), sleeping more but still feeling
tired, and having trouble concentrating. SAD also depends on your
geographical location as it is more prolific in the northern hemisphere. Cases are very rare in the southern hemisphere, suggesting
that this condition is caused by the lack of sunlight. Mental Health
America described another cause of the disorder, saying, “Melatonin,
a sleep-related hormone secreted by the pineal gland in the brain,
has been linked to SAD. This hormone, which may cause symptoms
of depression, is produced at increased levels in the dark. Therefore,
when the days are shorter and darker the production of this hormone increases.” There are three treatments for Seasonal Affective
Disorder, Phototherapy, spending more time outside for mild symptoms, and if all else fails, antidepressants can be prescribed. Phototherapy (Light Therapy) though, has been reported to have worked
in 80 percent of SAD cases, proving to be a much safer alternative to
costly, and potentially dangerous, antidepressant pills.
If you are experiencing any symptoms of SAD, try some of these
treatments, they might really help out. But if these symptoms do
become serious, see your physician immediately & get diagnosed.

“Here’s my simple formula for a livable New Year’s Resolution. Stick
with something easy—forget diet and exercise. Resolve to do what
you really want to do. Just fill in the blanks: Bigger ___, Better ___,
More ___, Now! This year, my resolution is “Bigger Ideas, Better Planning, More Fun, Now!” My big idea is that our community can be
more vibrant and exciting. People are already working on it. All I
have to do is show up. If I enjoy myself and spend a little money,
then they are successful. If no one comes, events and businesses
flop and fold. Just look at our chronically empty storefronts. Yet
people keep opening businesses and creating events to make our
community a better place and improve our local economy. Sometimes I’ve missed events because I forgot. This year, my plan is a calendar dedicated to getting out and connecting. I’ll keep the calendar handy to jot down events when I read local publications like the
Crab Cracker and the Stanwood Camano News. Then when I have
that vague feeling that there was something I wanted to do—I’ll
know where to jog my memory. I resolve to get out to more events,
connect with folks I know, and meet new people. People, activities,
and connections make our community alive and strong. When I
visit friends in communities like Port Townsend, Bellingham, Portland, and Seattle, there are places to go, things to do, and events
are well attended. Sure, these cities are more populated, but we can
have it on a smaller scale. I’ve seen too many attempts to bring life
to our Stanwood-Camano community fail. Then people complain
that there’s nothing to do. Let’s change that. Pick up a calendar and
mark it up. I’ll see you out and about!”

l. Did you know that waste reduction and recycling can have an
impact on global warming. By taking a few steps to reduce and
recycle, you can be a part of the climate change.
2. You can help with climate change by reducing waste. Decomposing waste in landfills produce methane, which is 21 times more
potent than carbon dioxide.
3. You can help with climate change by throwing away less. New
replacement products are produced and the extraction of new
raw materials, manufacturing and distribution all produce greenhouse gasses.
4. Waste reduction and recycling are effective ways to help reduce
greenhouse gasses. Less garbage means less methane emissions,
less energy use, and a greater supply of trees to help clean the air.
5. Recycling is second best to not making waste in the first place.
Whenever you recycle or use products made with less material,
you help save energy that would otherwise be used to extract,
transport and process raw materials.
6. Trees absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. When you
reduce waste and recycle paper products, more trees are left
standing in the forest where they can continue to remove CO 2.
7. Food makes up to 20-30% of a trash can in U.S. cities. Food
waste has value. Try worm bin composting, use curbside recycling
that turns food waste into compost or use a metal garbage can
(partially buried in the ground) as a food digester.

“It is always fun to learn a new word and I would like to introduce
you to this word for the new year. The vocabulary word for this
edition is “Pluviophile”. Does anyone know what this odd word
means? I will describe it in the following sentence...and this is a
hint for you. “The people who just bought the home when it was
pouring down rain are Pluviophiles.” This interesting words means
“A lover of rain, someone who finds joy and peace of mind during rainy days.”. Who would have thought that? I, Jan Mather, can
understand this vocabulary word and language. When I grew up
in Iowa, all we ever experienced was hot, humid summers and very
cold, icy winters. It was very rare that we saw it rain and when it
did, hurray!! This usually occurred in the early evening and my Dad
would say “Get the flashlight!” Immediately that meant to get the
flashlight and go night crawler hunting as we loved to go fishing
in Lake Okoboji. We did that during the rain, the smell in the air
was so refreshing and wonderful and it meant as a young girl, I was
able to stay up late. I loved night crawler hunting and the pouring down of rain. Rain does this to us in the Northwest, don’t you
agree? It makes us feel safe and blessed; It makes things grow; It
tends for us to slow down and reflect on life and priorities; It encourages us to bake, make soups, cook, roast and make comfort
foods. Thank you for listening to the new vocabulary word...Just
wait until the next edition.

Year festival

Calends, and
people
decorated their
homes and gave
each other gifts.
With cooler weather coming upon us, I’m ready for some winter
themed crafts with the boys. This project involves one of my favorite mediums, vellum paper. With its translucency, applications
are almost endless and this project was an experiment to see if
it would paper mache well. As a forewarning, this project is very
messy, but my kids enjoyed the tactile experience of getting their
hands dirty! So be prepared to make a bit of mess and to work on
this project over the course of a couple of days.
What you’ll need: All-purpose glue, Glue gun, Balloon, Vellum paper torn into strips, various lengths, Oatmeal canister wrapped in
plastic wrap (optional)
Directions: Step 1: Create paper mache glue by mixing entire contents of glue bottle (I used a 4oz bottle here) with 1/4 cup of water
in a bowl. Set aside. Step 2: Stabilize inflated balloon in another
bowl. Use a couple pieces of tape to make it extra secure. Draw
outlines for the bottom of the igloo and for the doorway. Step 3:
Dip strips into glue mixture, making sure to completely saturate
paper. Slide off excess glue and lay strips over surface of the balloon. Try to keep to one layer -- makes for a quicker drying time -and aim to have the pieces criss-cross and overlap. Optional step:
If you’re feeling ambitious, make a doorway to the igloo. For the
mold, I used a round oatmeal canister wrapped in plastic wrap.
Allow everything to dry until hard (I had to wait overnight). Step 4:
Slowly deflate balloon. It will stick a little to the inside of the igloo,
so do this step carefully! Step 5: Trim off the marker lines. Step 6: If
you made the igloo doorway, attach using a glue gun and trim off
any excess. While gluing, it helps to use a bowl again to hold the
igloo steady.
I found a small string of battery-operated lights at the store that
we used to illuminate the inside of the igloo which gave it that
extra cool factor for the kids.

From high school artist to published
illustrator; Sadie Clem
Sadie Clem has always loved to draw. “I would get dropped off at
the library when I was younger and I would look at all the picture
books and copy the drawings and as I got older I started making my
own drawings,” says Clem. Sadie Clem is a junior at Stanwood High
School and an invested art student. While a typical summer job for
teenagers is walking dogs, babysitting or a job at QFC, Sadie got an
unusual offer. “For a long time, my mom would post my art on Facebook and one day a family friend messaged her and asked if I would
want to illustrate the book she was working on,” Clem exclaims. In
the Summer of 2013, Clem started work on the illustrations. For two
months she worked almost every day and spent an average of five
hours per drawing (for a 24 page book); it wasn’t an easy process.

RE-INTRODUCTION TO CAMANO’S
ANIMAL SHELTER - part 1
CASA (Camano Animal Shelter Association) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit
organization, founded in 1998. We have operated as a NO-KILL shelter since the spring of 2009 and strive to work above the set standard for no-kill. We fight to help the very young, very old, very sick,
and imperfect pets which cross our path. The size of our building,
our limited staff, volunteers, distant location, and funding do pose
challenges, but we are determined to outweigh this. When you visit
the shelter, you see an old metal building with one side towering
above you. We only inhabit a small fraction of that building. When
you come inside it is colorful and cheery, with cats roaming around.
People are often surprised as kitties pop out of nooks and crannies during their visit. The staff often jokes that our shelter is like a
clown-car, it is amazing what’s really living in the space. See photos
of the shelter and learn more about our “clown-car” by taking the
online tour on our website. Over 500 animals passed through the
doors of CASA this year, even a Bearded Dragon. We offer a variety
of services to the community which includes: pet adoptions, we
accept owner surrenders, and provide stray intake and reclaiming
services. CASA also maintains a pet food bank and performs lowcost microchipping. We also work with people regularly on ways
for them to keep their animals as an alternative to surrendering
them to the shelter. CASA takes our commitment to the animals
very seriously. Every dog and cat adopted from CASA is spayed or
neutered, microchipped and registered, dewormed, flea treated,
and has core vaccines. Additionally, every cat and kitten from CASA
is FeLV or FeLV/FIV combo tested before going up for adoption. We
encourage every adopter to keep in contact with us and if there is
ever an issue or if they can no longer keep their adopted pet for
any reason, regardless of the time which has passed our doors will
always be open for them again and we encourage them to make
us their first call. Each day at CASA we have just two staff members
who clean, feed, rotate, medicate, assess and intake animals, take
care of adoptions, strays, and more. We struggle each day due to
the seriously limited number of in-shelter volunteers. We encourage you to join our mission in helping local animals and become
part of our volunteer team. We understand that not everyone can
physically volunteer at the shelter, but there are also other ways
we need you. You can share our adoptable animals, our wish list, or
simply tell people about CASA in general and why YOU choose to
support us. Foster homes are always needed. You can also make a
tax deductible donation to CASA at any time. Your generosity funds
our work and we thank you for helping us help the animals.

YMCA of Snohomish County purchases
property for new Stanwood-Camano
YMCA
EVERETT, Wash., Dec. 17, 2014 – The effort to build a YMCA in the
Stanwood-Camano community that started four years ago has taken a major step forward with the purchase of property at Stanwood
Village. The YMCA of Snohomish County’s Board of Trustees’ Executive Committee approved the Stanwood-Camano Organizing Committee’s recommendation to purchase the former fitness club property, located adjacent to Port Susan Middle School at 7213 267th St.
NW, Stanwood. A Site Selection Committee, chaired by Laura Byers,
has been working the past four years to identify a site suitable for
the YMCA. More than 30 sites were reviewed during the process using rigorous evaluation criteria. The primary goal was to select a site
that best meets community needs to deliver the greatest amount
of programs and services. “This location is particularly exciting to
us because it is within walking distance of three of our schools, including Stanwood High School and Port Susan Middle School,” said
Byers. The site is also close to senior housing and the Island Transit
bus route, and centrally located to serve the surrounding community. “This is an exciting day for the Stanwood-Camano community,”
said Ken Kettler, Chair of the Stanwood-Camano YMCA Organizing
Committee. “I’d like to thank Past Chair, Theresa Metzger for her incredible leadership in getting us to this point and for continuing on
as Co-Chair of our Capital Fundraising Committee. The volunteers
in this community have worked diligently for the past four years to
make this dream a reality.” The YMCA conducted two marketing feasibility studies: one in Sept. 2010 and the second in May 2014. Both
studies indicate a strong interest in YMCA programs and activities.
The YMCA has confidence that this level of interest will provide the
sustaining revenue required to ensure a successful YMCA branch.
YMCA operations are supported through two revenue streams:
earned revenue from membership and programs; and contributed revenue through fund raising, grants, and endowment funds.
Pursuing facility development in the Stanwood-Camano areas is a
strategic goal of the YMCA of Snohomish County. A full facility will
inspire and develop youth, ensure a healthy and safe community,
and build community connection and infrastructure. Construction
of new YMCAs are funded through a combination of charitable donations, YMCA reserves, and loans. The original cost estimate for a
new Stanwood-Camano YMCA was $18 million, including property
acquisition. Now that a site has been purchased, the YMCA design
and construction team can develop a detailed construction budget.
With the leadership of past Capital Fundraising Committee chair,
Don Leak, and current Capital Fundraising Committee co-chairs,
Rose Olson and Theresa Metzger, and their volunteer committee,
$8.4 million has been raised to date through charitable donations.
Reaching the next fundraising milestone of $9.6 million will allow
the YMCA to break ground. The YMCA anticipates breaking ground
in mid-2015 with an expected open date in late-2016, provided site
development and fundraising benchmarks are achieved.

Your Camano Island Preparedness Group is organized for the
betterment of our community by integrating resources for the
mitigation of the social and economic impacts that will follow a
disaster on our island. Our mission is to strengthen the resiliency
of our island community by engaging in a wide range of efforts
to cope with any and all the possible crises our island is subject
to through the development of informed, organized,and trained
residents participating, particularily at their neighborhood level.
We need people of all backgrounds and skill levels to be liason and
to assist our professional responders and volunteer groups. We
seek to increase awareness that our island is vulnerable to isolation, flood, fire, earthquake, pandemic, slides, and windstorm and
we are working to create/grow a core group of people who are
knowledgeable , active, and will train in emergency skills (CERT).
We plan to establish emergency Hubs where supplies will be
available when Camano is isolated from the mainland and roads
impassible. We make available the opportunity for all residents to
aquire the skills and knowledge they need to take care of their own
families and then to help their neighbors. One of our prime aims
is to further coordinated efforts among all emergency responders, professional and volunteer with everyone understanding and

Camano Ridge Preserve
Trail enthusiasts on Camano Island may soon have reason to celebrate! We’re working with Island County to acquire a five-acre parcel adjacent to the Camano Ridge Forest Preserve to create a new
trailhead and parking area. The 400-care Forest Preserve currently
has only one trailhead, making it hard for many Camano residents
to access its five miles of hiking trails. The property was logged two
years ago and lies between Camano Ridge Road and the Preserve
boundary – an ideal place to create a parking area. We’re currently
asking for donations to leverage a Conservation Futures Fund grant
the County plans to apply for in 2015 to help fund the project. A
generous Camano Island family has pledged a lead gift of $10,000

PUD Offers Safety Reminders
for Winter Storm
With more stormy weather likely this winter, Snohomish County
Public Utility District reminds customers to take steps to be safe
when Mother Nature strikes. Steer Clear of Downed Power
Lines. Approaching downed power lines can be fatal! You don’t
even have to touch a downed line to be electrocuted. If you get
too close, electricity can find a path into one leg or foot travel up
the body and down the other leg and foot and cause serious burns
and injury or even death. Stay at least 20 to 30 feet away from any
downed line. Call the PUD immediately to report the location of the
downed line. If the downed line is life-threatening (for example, on
top of an occupied car), call 911. Some people think it’s okay to
drive across downed lines, believing that the rubber in the car tires
will protect them. While this is true to some extent, the best rule
to follow is to avoid driving over downed power lines unless it is a
last-resort. Beware of Carbon Monoxide Emissions. Using a gas
stove or charcoal grill inside or your home for heating can have
deadly results. During last year’s wind storm, hundreds of people
suffered carbon monoxide poisoning when they tried to heat their
homes by turning on gas stoves or dragging grills or portable generators inside their homes. Gas, oil, kerosene, charcoal, and wood
all emit carbon monoxide – a colorless, odorless gas – that can kill
a person in just minutes if inhaled at high levels (such as inside
a house with windows shut). Because carbon monoxide poisoning symptoms are similar to those for the flu, many people don’t
realize they are suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning until
it’s too late. Be Safe with Lamps and Flammables. Always use
extreme caution if you use candles or oil lamps. Never leave them
unattended and keep them away from furniture, drapes, and other
flammable materials. In all cases, be sure you have enough ventilation. Use Portable Generators Safely. Never plug a portable generator into your household wiring unless your home is equipped
with a transfer switch that was installed by a licensed electrician.
Your generator could be damaged or, much worse, it could back
feed electricity through the meter and out into the neighborhood,
where it would cause a severe safety hazard to neighbors and line
workers. If you need to power an appliance with a generator, plug
it directly to the generator. Also, remember to keep enough fuel on
hand to power your generator through longer outages. – Snohomish County PUD.

The Washington Association of Conservation Districts recently held
their annual meeting in Cle Elum and presented awards to three
individuals and groups from Snohomish County and Camano Island. The Tulalip Tribes, Kristoferson Farm, and Mukilteo teacher Sue
Idso were recognized. The annual awards recognize individuals and
groups that support conservation districts in their work on natural
resource conservation. The Kristoferson family and Kristoferson
Farm won the WACD Wildlife Farm of the Year Award for their conservation and wildlife habitat restoration efforts. The Kristoferson
Farm on Camano Island has been in the family since 1921. It’s currently managed as a working forest for small-scale timber harvest,
organic hay production, a canopy zip-line tour and event venue.
The Tulalip Tribes received the WACD Tribal Partnership Award. The
Tribes worked with the Snohomish Conservation District to implement stormwater educational efforts and projects on tribal lands.
Terry Williams and the Tribes have also been leaders in establishing
and growing the Snohomish County Sustainable Lands Strategy.
This collaborative, cross-boundary approach to net gains for both
fish and farm producers has provided many opportunities for the
Tribes, District, and other partners to secure funding to implement
a wide variety of farm/fish/flood projects. Sue Idso, a fifth grade
teacher at Mukilteo Elementary School, received the Educator of the
Year Award. With help from habitat specialist Ryan Williams, Sue and
her students created an outdoor classroom - a place where teachers
of all grades could hold science and language arts classes outside.
After the District helped clear brush, Sue contacted a group of local
Eagle Scout candidates to develop and build projects including: a
trail network, an amphitheater, a bird blind, and a series of bat boxes. Sue also recruited dozens of volunteers for monthly work parties
to remove invasive ivy, blackberry and laurel, which were replaced
with native trees and shrubs. The outdoor classroom was ready for

As a close-knit family, the Johnston clan was excited to be celebrating Christmas all together for the first time in 13 years. Three of us
were flying in from California for 3 whirlwind days of Christmas jubilation. On Thursday, December 18, as flights were arriving at SeaTac, my brother Gregory Johnston was taken to the ER for what we
thought at the time was a blood clot in his leg. Pending some test
results, he would join us on Friday just in time to open presents with
his 4 nieces and nephews. On Friday, as our family should have been
celebrating a long-await gathering, we got the news that Greg has
leukemia. We took turns in the hospital as the blood clots, caused
by the leukemia, got worse. Sunday morning, as our siblings prepared to fly home, we got a phone call that devastated us: come
say good-bye. In a blind rush, we hurried to the hospital. The clots
were filling his lungs. His vitals were not good. The doctors decided
to do a risky procedure. They cut into his chest to place a filter in his
artery to stop more clots from getting into his lungs; they couldn’t
risk taking him off the blood thinners to do this, so they did the
procedure at the risk that he could bleed out. His nurse explained
that Greg’s situation was precarious. While it was possible he may
make it, no one had seen anyone recover from such a bad situation
before. We kept vigil all day, rotating to stay by his side in groups
of 2 and 3, the rest of us taking up residence in the lobby. Sunday
evening, as his beloved Seahawks played the Cardinals, the children
came to see him one last time (he can’t have visitors under 12), and
the doctors started chemo. But Christmas miracles happen, and my
brother is a fighter, and so, by the end of the day on Monday, he was
finally breathing better as the blood thinners worked to disolve the
clots. They moved him to the Critical Care Unit, and slowly, slowly,
he improved. Today Greg is in the oncology unit. He is still on blood
thinners, but otherwise, he is now focused on battling the leukemia.
The type he has is known to be aggressive and fast, so the doctors
are being aggressive as well. The doctors anticipate Greg will be in
the hospital at least 6 weeks. He will be out of work for much, much
longer than that. Of course, it’s the end of the year, so we are just
days away from a new year’s worth of deductibles, copays, and coinsurance. At home, his bills continue to stack up. As a family, we
are doing everything we can, but we are richer in love than money. I
am asking for your donations to help Greg with his expenses during
this crisis. Many have asked what they can do to help, and this is it,
friends. Please donate now so that Gregory can continue to have
the treatment he needs, because we still need him. Greg’s Leukemia

Camano Community Spirit and Kind Collaboration Saves the Schoolhouse
At 9 AM on December 6, the Historic Camano City Schoolhouse was
cold, dark and fogbound Chilly and damp .. Chuck Durland and Jim
Turk of Camano SH Foundation hauled some space heaters into the
105 year old classroom and prayed for uninterrupted power and
enuf heat to warm the Camano Celtic. And it was far too cold for a
delicate violin. At 9:30, Don Hopkins, roused from sleep said, “Sure
I’ll check it out, and call you back”. My cell phone rang at 10:30, to
good news: “Hey Jim, my friend, Dan Wickstrom has a generator ..
He’ll haul it to schoolhouse and do the hookup. Should be plenty
of power for all appliances, Celtic keyboard, and warmth for violin
.. And it came to pass .. That many gathered, savored the sounds,
joined in the holiday carols, munched on home-baked goodies ..
And declared it a Super Saturday at the Schoolhouse. The music and
songs were magical .. and lusty and lyrical .. Flute was eloquently
melodic .. Violin was vibrant .. auto harp was harmony harmonious.
All Hail to Holiday Heroes who saved the day for CSF.

One of God’s saints, a faithful, long standing member of St Aidan’s,
Mike Rossner, has gone from service in this life to life eternal. Last
Thursday evening, December 11th, Mike was in a car accident that
took his life. Mike was a wonderful blessing to this church and to everyone who knew him. He was gifted by God with a face and smile
and heart that was a source of joy for many, especially for me in my
first four months at St Aidan’s. There’s no doubt Mike had a big heart,
but not everyone knew that Mike had an actual heart twice the normal size. Though he struggled with it, even to the point of almost
dying once, you wouldn’t know because he was always cheerful
and faithfully carried on no matter what. Several times he expressed
to me an abiding sense of God’s loving care for him and knowledge
that his time in this life was given to him for a reason. Now his time
has been fulfilled and God has called him home. He will be missed
by many, especially by his wife Barb and his son Ben, by St Aidan’s
Church, his Tuesday Bible study, of which he was a dedicated member, and by his friends at Citizens On Patrol. A memorial service to
give thanks for Mike’s life and commend him to God’s care will be
held at St Aidan’s Church on Tuesday, January 27th at 3:00pm. A
reception in the Red Room will follow the service. Peace and blessings, Drew+. “May Mike’s soul and souls of all the departed, through
the mercy of God, rest in peace.” “Into paradise may the angels lead
you. At your coming may the martyrs receive you, and bring you

INGREDIENTS: 15 frozen Rhodes white dinner rolls • 1/4 c. melted
butter • Coarsely chopped fresh rosemary for sprinkling • Coarse
sea salt for sprinkling
DIRECTIONS: 1. Place the frozen dinner rolls in a large 10-12-inch
lightly buttered cast iron skillet, allowing some space between
the rolls. Cover with a tea towel or dish cloth and set aside in a
warm place to rise for at least 2 to 2 1/2 hours. 2. When risen, the
rolls should be puffy and soft. Gently brush melted butter onto
the rolls. Sprinkle the rolls with rosemary and sea salt. 3. Bake at
400 degrees for 15 to 18 minutes, until nice and golden brown.
Remove from the oven and allow to cool in the pan. Serve warm
with a pat of butter.

INGREDIENTS: 1 1/4 lb. thick-sliced bacon, cut crosswise into 1/4inch strips • 2 T. extra-virgin olive oil • 1 onion, finely chopped • 1
lg. carrot, finely diced • 2 celery ribs, finely diced • 4 garlic cloves,
minced • 1 fresh bay leaf • 2 tsp. fresh chopped thyme • 2 tsp. fresh
chopped rosemary • 1 lb. Great Northern beans, soaked overnight
and drained • 10 c. chicken stock • Salt and freshly ground pepper
DIRECTIONS: 1. In a large soup pot, cook the bacon over moderate
heat, stirring, until browned and crisp, about 7 minutes. Drain, reserving the fat and bacon separately. 2. Heat the olive oil in the soup
pot. Add the onion, carrot and celery and cook over medium heat,
stirring occasionally, until the vegetables are softened, about 8 minutes. Stir in the garlic, bay leaf and 1 teaspoon each of the chopped
thyme and rosemary and cook until fragrant, about 2 minutes. Add
the drained beans, stock and 3 tablespoons of the reserved bacon
fat and bring to a boil. Simmer the soup over moderately low heat
until the beans are tender, about 1 1/2 hours. 3. Discard the bay
leaf and stir in the remaining thyme and rosemary. Season the soup
with salt and pepper and transfer to shallow bowls. Garnish the
soup with the bacon and serve. Serves 1. Cook’s Note: You could
use canned white beans, if you’re short on time.

on old feet without slippers
She climbs the Madrona tree,
tells stories on narrow limbs knotted red
where she bleeds from old feet

My mother wanted me to be a hairdresser. Used to go to the
neighbor and she wanted me to pinciurl her hair. Mom paid for
piano lessons once a week. 15 cents in those days. Wonder what it
is now? When one winter, ice was all around the house. Mom got
us ice skates and wouldn’t it be neat to have twin skaters, she said?
Anyway, to make a long story short, I met the love of my life and
got married, and before longs started a family.
