At Soul Shine you can take yoga classes, join a workshop, meditation group or indulge in a relaxing therapeutic massage. Our teachers are gentle and inspiring, all while challenging students to discover new thing about themselves.” The road that led the Tuckers to Medford began in Idaho, where the couple first met. Below is the first-hand account of this journey: “We moved to the Rogue Valley from Northern Idaho in the summer of 2011. We both grew up in Idaho but had always felt that Oregon was the place we would call yoga in high school when I found a book of asanas at home. We immediately fell in love with the mild climate, the library. Over the course of several years I have attended various teacher trainings and workshops which have allowed me to obtain my 500 HR E-RYT (Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher) certificate. An especially lovely portion of this experience was my teacher training at Shanti Yoga in McCall, ID where I earned my 200 HR RYT certificate. This multi-disciplinary education approach provided me with a broad range of knowledge and theory. During my teacher training, I also finished my degree in Education and Social Sciences from Lewis-Clark State College. As a first generation college graduate, it never dawned on me that I could actually teach yoga for a living. I thought that I had to work within the realms of my degree. While doing long term subbing jobs and raising young children, I taught yoga classes at various physical therapy clinics, chiropractic offices, senior centers, preschools and church basements in my hometown of Orofino, Idaho. I would teach wherever I was needed and absolutely loved getting people, especially those who were a little reluctant on the whole flexibility thing, “hooked” on yoga. One of my favorite experiences teaching yoga was for the US Forest Service. In this class I had a very diverse group of highly active smoke jumpers and fire crew members. Watching these students practice yoga was so rewarding and amazing, what strength! While in Idaho I consistently taught yoga classes locally and at festivals and workshops throughout the Northwest. I taught yoga and meditation at Lewis-Clark State College and loved that my teaching had come full circle to where I took my first class. My observations as a yoga teacher and curiosity of what makes the body tick is what led me to my path as a massage therapist. Exploring kinesiology in teacher training left me wanting to know even more. While living in Idaho I studied various forms of bodywork but became fascinated with Reiki, a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation. My training allowed me to work with clients offering meditation, reiki and yoga as a package experience. One of my goals after I moved to Oregon was to eventually go to massage school to pursue training to obtain my license as an LMT. After moving to Medford, I decided not to pursue my Oregon Teaching Certificate and instead worked a number of various jobs (still under the idea that I couldn’t teach yoga as a full time job). I worked as a waitress, Real Estate Agent and a yoga teacher at Superior Athletic Club. I began teaching at the club shortly after moving to Medford. I taught several classes there and introduced a gentle yoga program called “Wisdom Yoga.” The students there were amazing! To me, nothing is better than connecting with people, teaching and learning from them all at the same time. After a long winter of doing work that didn’t make my soul sing, (no offense to waitressing and Real Estate), I decided to make the leap and attend Ashland Institute of Massage. This was truly the best decision I have ever made in my life. Diving deep into the knowledge of the physical and emotional body, everything fell into place. My experience as a yoga teacher deeply increased my understanding of the work I was doing as a massage therapist. I had once told a friend that yoga was my only passion; I learned very quickly at AIM that I had two true passions and that this was the work that filled my cup. My career as a massage therapist inspired my dream even further. In August of 2014, Dave and I opened Soul Shine Yoga and Massage. After working various jobs and pursuing something to make a “career” out of, it finally dawned on me one day that the only thing holding me back from living my passion was an idea….I took a leap of faith and have enjoyed every minute of it.” Here is just a sampling of the classes they offer: Yin Yoga (a class designed to work deep into the connective tissues, relaxing and rejuvenating, deep stretching and meditative), Wise and Shine Flow, this all levels class has a little bit of something for everyone, breath-work, flexibility, strength and balance. Yoga 101 class series: A 5-week class course perfect for beginners, designed to introduce the foundational elements of yoga. Amanda works with a variety of massage modalities including: Swedish, Deep Tissue, Myofascial Release, and Sports Massage. With her knowledge of Kinesiology and biomechanics of the body, she works to combine the best of each of these modalities in individual sessions to deliver to her clients increased relaxation and relief to long and short term pain cycles. Whether you are overcoming an injury or are in a life long struggle with pain, she will always approach your sessions with a desire to understand your body and individual needs. In addition to yoga and massage services, they also have a boutique section at the front of the studio offering fun and unique yoga clothing items, hand-made jewelry, soaking salts, essential oils, gift items, massage and yoga supplies. Amanda will also be giving massages at local running events including the Rogue Half-Marathon. Gift certificates are available for massage and yoga class packages. She also accepts and bills insurance for MVA (Motor vehicle accident) clients. “You can book a massage online at www.soulshineyogamassage.com,” Amanda said. “Find the day and time that works for you, enter in your information and it’s booked! As easy as pie J” Each month they dedicate a Saturday morning to raising funds for a local charity. “Here’s how it works, bring your mat, a few friends and whatever donation you wish to pay for the class. Each class will be something special, offering a unique perspective on what it means to GIVE, not just out of your dollars, but of your SELF. All proceeds will go directly to charity. Endless, too, are the stories of the minor players in misery. The minor players give me the most problem because they are so immediately present. My irritations with them build up and my whole life seems to become one of injustice and how dare they treat me that way! At that point I begin to start treating myself worse than I imagine they are treating me. There must be a way to stop that cycle of anger and frustration. I was looking across the street at someone sitting in a chair, garbage piled in the driveway and the grass two feet tall. They sit out there every sunny day. They have the time, and they have family, but the cleanup work never seems to get done. A co-worker was so useless that work actually slowed down when they helped. They couldn’t be fired for a variety of reasons, so they were given a job that did little to interfere with people who could accomplish things. They were given a bunch of pipes to carry around and around. When I encounter those kinds of people my thinking moves into judgment and disdain. My feelings become muddied with resentment. My anger can build so much that I become, in a way, the people I am angry with. It seems that the problem comes from the neighbor, co-worker or family member but the problem lies within me. The solution lies within me as well. The root of the problem is that I am disturbed. People, places and things are more frustrating when I am carrying a big bag of collected resentments. The resentments cloud my thinking, and 1234 S Riverside Antelope & Hwy62 541-826-2202 541-857-0621 White City Medford Voted Medford’s Favorite Dentist! In the heat of the moment it is better to take some time to listen to the anger within me. That kind of time takes practice, especially when I am edgy and easily angered. The skills to practice are lowering the heart rate, calming down, and letting the aggressive feelings subside. Once the anger has become simply a disturbance, I get a chance to take some action that might make a difference. There are many paths to take at that point. The difficult path is to actually approach the person in question and talk with them about why I am disturbed. Another path, which I find necessary when I have no ability to talk with the other person, is to be kind to someone. When that all fails then I call a friend and vent those frustrations. Sometimes even that is not enough. There are people who specialize in anger management who have proven techniques that can calm us down. There is seldom a way to be rid of, or avoid, the people that anger us, and changing them is out of the question, but we can learn to control our reactions. Everyday this month, all four Yogurt Huts will be selling “Team Helen” limited edition buttons in honor of Helen’s fast approaching kidney transplant. First introduced to the community last year via Yogurt Hut’s “Celebrate Helen” Month, Helen, a 4-year-old Medford girl with end-stage kidney failure, has enjoyed relatively stable health. This brief calm has allowed her to just be a kid and even start preschool. Unfortunately, the calm is ending and little Helen’s health is deteriorating. In the summer of 2013 Helen was diagnosed with Chronic Kidney Disease after an E. Coli infection and subsequent bout of Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome. The doctors at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital in Portland, Oregon, have recommended a life-saving kidney transplant. Helen is scheduled to have her long-awaited kidney transplant this spring. Helen’s family has asked for assistance from the Children’s Organ Transplant Association. The organization’s priority is to assure that no child or young adult is denied a transplant or excluded from a transplant waiting list due to lack of funds. 100% of all funds raised are used for patients’ transplant-related expenses. “You can help us celebrate Helen at Yogurt Hut!” said “COTA for Helen L” volunteer, Dana Schallheim. “Let’s blanket the valley in “Team Helen” buttons this spring and show Helen how much her community loves her. I am for her. Support “Team Helen” at Yogurt Hut all month! For more information call 503-704-4857 or visit www.COTAforHelenL.com 100% of the proceeds from the “Team Helen” button sales will be donated directly to COTA to help pay for the transplant.” For more information about “Team Helen Month” at Yogurt Hut, or other fundraising and volunteer opportunities, please contact Dana Schallheim, formerly of Ashland, OR at 503-7044857, [email protected], or visit www.COTAforHelenL.com. It’s never too early to start thinking about school readiness. Being prepared for school isn’t just about academics. It’s much more about the ability to think, problem solve, interact with others, imagine and create. This process begins before birth. With 90% of all brain growth occurring between birth and age six it is vital to engage your little ones in healthy, robust playtime activities. Early Childhood Development sets the foundation for a bright future – a common sense, play-based approach that relies on creativity, imagination, movement, and interaction/socialization with others is vital to long term success. This article focuses on fun activities that are cost effective, easy to set up/ clean up and can entertain your toddler for hours! Here are some of our favorite hands on activities for your home: Soapy Sensory Foam: This will keep your child busy for hours…and may even lead to a cleaner bathtub or kitchen sink. Add a few squirts of dish soap with water in a measuring cup and pour into food processor. Take foam into the bathtub, kitchen sink, bucket on the floor…its just soap! Flour Sensory Play: A large baking sheet on the kitchen floor will work great for this messy activity. There will be flour everywhere…but it’s really not that hard to clean up. Put a thin layer of flour in the baking sheet and let your little one explore. Add cars, tractors, forks, cups, paintbrushes, etc. to the play to extend for hours! Contact Paper Art: Your toddler is mastering his/her pincer grasp, and a good way to exercise those skills is with contact paper art. Place a piece of clear contact paper on the table sticky side up, tape down the sides so it doesn’t roll up.(This is the trickiest part of the whole project, do it when you have both hands available and a few minutes to focus on it). Give your child different items to place on the contact paper. Ripped up tissues paper, stickers, fabric, glitter and ribbon all work really well. When your child is finished, place another piece of contact paper over the original. Hang in the window to let the light shine through! These are great for holidays/ gifts, hearts for Valentine’s Day, shamrocks for St. Patrick’s day, rainbows in spring. Free Play Inspiration: Sometimes you just need to put something new out to inspire different types of play and learning. Here are some of my favorite easy items to spark your child’s interest…most can be found at the dollar store! Under the direction of Craterian Executive Director, Stephen McCandless, and the program’s Artistic Director, Doug Warner, the series will offer themed music concerts in a theatrical setting, and star some of the region’s best professional musicians. Taking full advantage of the Craterian’s superior acoustics, sound system and production resources, the Craterian Music Hall will use Next Stage Repertory Company’s highly successful January 2015 production of “Like A Rolling Stone: An Original Musical Tribute to Bob Dylan” as the model for the new series. “We wanted to take full advantage of Doug’s creative talents as a musician and theater artist, and give some of the local musicians a chance to perform in a bigger room,” McCandless said. “We have fantastic production talent and facilities here at the Craterian, and we love to find ways to put them to use for the community. When I sat in the house and watched our Dylan show, it was obvious that Doug had found a winning formula and that we needed to do more with it. The Music Hall will offer something fresh and unique to the community and give us the chance to showcase some of the region’s best musicians in an original program.” Craterian Performances launches the Music Hall series with “Night Train to Memphis” featuring music from the Golden Age of Soul, Blues and Rock and Roll, and from such legends as Otis Redding, Elvis Presley, Aretha Franklin, Robert Johnson, Sam and Dave, Wilson Pickett, Chuck Berry, Muddy Waters and Etta James. About forty people turned out in inclement weather to see snakes, turtles, frogs, lizards and even alligators at the South Medford reptile shop. A line of a dozen or so children grappled with an albino reticulated python while owner Kyle Adams held a snapping turtle doing its best to bite off his fingers as he talked to the crowd. Adams says he understands the fascination with reptiles: the cold-blooded predators have been part of his life since he was a child in Vancouver, Washington. “When we were growing up, some of us lived in apartments or small houses, so not everyone could own a dog or a cat. So my mom was always okay with me having a pet lizard. And plus when you’re a kid, there’s always creepy crawly things around everything and you are just kind of drawn to it. At least I was. So I would bring this stuff home.” Adams wasn’t alone in his fascination: Reptile Guyz co-owner Daniel Prince has been his best friend since childhood and the two attended their first reptile show together when Open Mon-Fri 10am - 5pm 924 Chevy Way • Medford • 541-776-7729 Riley Gaston pictured with a reticulated python they were still in elementary school. Adams says the first reptiles he owned were a pair of garter snakes he captured. The pair bred, launching him into the world of reptile breeding the moment he had learned to care for them. It didn’t take long before he moved on to a green iguana named Max. “You buy them at your every-day pet store and there’s like forty of them crawling around in a tank and you have no idea that it’s going to be like (Continued on page 20) C M Y CM MY CY CMY K June 12th to June 20th MedfordBeerWeek.com Sneak Preview Ad May 2015 BW.ai 1 4/16/2015 12:21:03 PM Page 20 — The Sneak Preview — May 2015 Reveal your inner beauty... He began rescuing reptiles from around the Portland/Vancouver area. He was surprised how many people purchased reptiles without understanding the level of commitment the creatures require. “People get them and think they’re just a throw-away pet they will have for a few years. But they have pretty long lives. About twice the lifespan of a dog or a cat.” He says most lizards and snakes live, on average, about thirty years, but tortoises and turtles can live over a hundred years. Though not as longlived as tortoises, he says one of the pets he discovers in most dire need of rescue are American alligators. Among the menagerie on display at the reptile event are two of the creatures. One, only a couple of years old, fits nicely into a plastic tote. The other, a thirteen-year-old rescue animal from the Portland area, would scarcely fit into a large bathtub. Adams and Prince rescued the animal in 2004 from a couple who had bought it at a pet store. “At a foot, it was aggressive. At two feet, it was scary, so Daniel and I rescued him and we’ve had him ever since. They live upward of sixty years and are quite aggressive. They just don’t make good pets. They’re animals that should be in the wild.” Since rescuing their first alligator, it has become illegal to possess them in Oregon. Adams and Prince, however, are permitted to possess nearly every type of reptile due to educational programs they run. “I rescue from everyone. People who have a pet snake that gets too big, or someone who has a lizard they can’t take care of anymore. Or someone who has an alligator since the 2007 ban and now it’s getting too big and out of control. I mean, not every reptile is some big dangerous violent animal, you know? People just lose interest. Not every animal is one that can’t be kept.” Adams has worked with a who’swho list of reptile keepers on the west coast in addition to working with the Portland Zoo. He says much of the work he does involves children. “We do a lot of shows at elementary schools, America’s Best Kids, I do a lot of birthday parties, and I’ve done some family reunions, some special event picnics. We tend to do a lot of birthday parties, honestly. I mean, every little kid wants to have a dinosaur at their birthday, so you know the next best thing is a big alligator, a big snake, tortoises.” Adams also rescues from the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, which is frequently forced to euthanize invasive turtle species. He says the introduction of popular domestic species, such as the red-eared slider, have pushed native species like the western pond turtle out of traditional habitat. He says he works to find homes out of state for invasive species. Adams says it’s not only invasive species that stress native turtle populations though. He notes that the filling and developing of wetlands is the most significant threat to Oregon’s native turtles. He says recent regulations requiring bio swales at least create oasis for breeding reptiles. He notes that the Portland Zoo also has breeding colonies of threatened native turtles that help buffer the wild populations from habitat loss. T h o u g h conservation is part of his work, Adams says the draw to reptiles is, in part, due to their misunderstood nature. He says he tends to root for the underdog, and many people are repulsed by reptiles. For him, though, there is also a primordial fascination. “It’s amazing that there were these giant reptile or birdlike animals roaming the earth, and now through evolution or adaptation, whatever you want to call it, we have these amazing lizards and snakes and geckos and turtles. And they are different from any other type of animal. And they Reptile Guys co-owner Kyle Adams...yes, that’s a live cobra! are kind of edgy, too. They’re not something you’re years. Adams says after his son, now going to go into someone’s house and seven, was born, he committed himself say ‘Hey, my sister has that same to making his passion his career. dog!’ No, I mean, how many people do “Was I going to work a nine to five you know that have a cobra in their and hate my life and hate my job, or house?” am I going to do something different Adams and Prince opened Reptile and something that I love?
