Read on for all the details of the past year's activities from the Chapters and Special Functions, as well as a few important announcements. Enjoy the Newsletter, The SOS Newsletter is published four times a year in February, May, August, and November. This issue is published February 2010. The SOS Newsletter is published by Save Ontario Shipwrecks (SOS), a nonprofit charitable organization dedicated to furthering public knowledge and appreciation of Ontario’s Marine Heritage. We encourage reproduction of our newsletter contents. Credits should read: From the SOS Newsletter, date of issue, a publication of Save Ontario Shipwrecks. Opinions expressed by contributors to the newsletter are not necessarily those of the Editor or the Board of SOS. Save Ontario Shipwrecks gratefully acknowledges the support and financial assistance of the Ontario Ministry of Culture. Submission deadline for the next issue is April 30, 2010. The Mission of Save Ontario Shipwrecks is the preservation and promotion of marine heritage through research, conservation and education. View from the Bridge SOS has been busy in the start of 2010 attending shows and meeting people. Starting with the Outdoor Adventure Show, we debuted our new fabric SOS display to 28,000 people. Board members volunteer at the Outdoor Adventure Show in Toronto: (L-R) Krissy Nickle, Brian Nickle, Brian Prince, Mike Hill, Chris Phinney, Marg Barker. Then we presented and exhibited at Great Lakes Underwater in Oswego NY. People were very impressed with our marine heritage work such as buoys, plaques and slates on the Canadian side of the lakes and rivers. Many people want NAS training either in NY or somewhere close to the border. As I write this, we are on the way to Shipwrecks 2010 in Welland. The display will then travel to London, then Kingston for extended visits where many people will be able to learn of our work through the PowerPoint presentation on the LCD screen that is part of the display. SOS Newsletter 1 We had a great corporate wide meeting in Toronto this year where we rolled out the online Chapter access to the membership system. This was made possible by the hard work and expertise of Tom Wilson of Brockville who is now Chapter Chair of 1000 Islands. Thanks Tom! What this system allows Chapters to do is see who is a member, who has not renewed, and check the membership and OUC status of anyone from any chapter that is participating in an event. Additionally it does a number of other administrative tasks and reports. Membership numbers have been on a continual decline and this year we have to change that. To this end, I ask every member to please sign up a buddy. Help get 100% renewal. Numbers count when we work with other organizations and those who help fund buoys, brochures and projects. SOS is nothing without you, the eyes, ears and promoter of the heritage ethic. Held over to April 30 is a program in its 3rd year where chapters can apply for funding for heritage related projects. I sent an email to each member we had addresses for so that it was well known and to raise awareness. Please work with your Chapter Chairs to submit your application. This is my last month as president of SOS. I have served for 2 terms of 2 years and I feel that I have been able to provide leadership to attain an NAS licence, 4 website applications, heritage database online, new SOS multimedia display, a more robust Ships Store, as well as a number of administrative improvements such as tele-conferencing, action item list, strategic plan and Ships Stores accounting practices. I believe we have a great team to push ahead with new and exciting activities and programs. We have a solid base of board members whose terms are now staggered to allow for continuity. I plan to stay on as past president to smooth the transition to the president elect at the AGM in April. Thank You to all the leadership people, Board members, Chapter Chairs and members who have worked with me to grow SOS. Safe Diving, Brian Prince, SOS President 2 February 2010 WANTED The SOS Board of Directors wants YOUR project ideas! We are accepting applications for 2010 Chapter project funding. In addition: passing the torch from chapter chair Gordon Dewis and his executive team. Many thanks for their hard work and commitment to the chapter. New Chapter Chair and Executive: At the January meeting, the chapter elected a new chapter chair (Luc Lafontaine) and treasurer/Secretary (Christopher Holloway). One of the first tasks performed by the newly elected executive was to transfer banking/financials,and to rebuild a new team of active members by assigning special tasks to volunteers. Christopher Holloway became our Treasurer/ Secretary/ NAS instructor, I kept my position of Buoy Director,Jérôme Devost became our Membership Coordinator & Web Master for the Ottawa web site, Frédéric Tremblay became our Project Coordinator and Trista Lauzon became our Weehawk Project Coordinator. Meetings: The chapter held quarterly general membership meetings in January, April, August and December with good attendance between 12 and 15 at each meeting. The executive team also held several specific meeting to discuss projects, organizational direction and financials. All 2009 meetings were held at the Clocktower Brew Pub in Ottawa and we made arrangements with management to get a sponsorship based on purchases in order to build some funds for future projects. Outreach: The executive continued to perform outreach to local dive shops/dive charters (Kanata Dive Supply, Divers Warehouse, Sharky’s Scuba Supply, Wet Beavers Scuba Charters, Scuba Geek, Burton’s Dive Shop and Ron’s Scuba), dive forums and Facebook. The goals of our outreach were to introduce the new executive, promote SOS and sell dive slates. As Chapter Chair, I was invited to give a presentation the Ottawa Beaver Scuba Club and members from the chapter were able to promote SOS to the club members after the presentation. 4 February 2010 Due to lack of volunteers we were not able to attend the Heritage Riverfest held at Pinhey’s Point. NAS Training: In May, Christopher was one of the ten members that attended the tutor training. We attempted twice to give an NAS 1 course here in Ottawa during the summer but we were unsuccessful at getting sufficient number of attendees and consequently lost our deposit for the pool rental. We will follow up with other chapters for lessons learned to improve in this area. Membership: As of December 31st we were 49 members. Our membership coordinator will be busy renewing membership for the 21 members up for renewal. Web site: Jérôme has been busy updating the Ottawa web site with information regarding our activities and projects: http://ottawa.saveontarioshipwrecks.on.ca/index.php Projects: Weehawk One of the most challenging projects for 2009 was the land plaque for the Weehawk dive site. To initiate this project, I submitted a grant application to the township of Edwardsburg/Cardinal and we have received a grant of $500. In order to ensure that we collect proper historical information about the Weehawk, a new member, Trista Lauzon, stepped up to coordinate the research. Trista has a degree in History and was instrumental with the research and gave a presentation at our August meeting. Fred Mercur Underwater plaque Back in January of 2009 Mark Labelle approached the Chapter with a proposal to produce and install an underwater plaque for the Fred Mercur and made arrangements with the Forces Sub Aqua club to give us a generous donation of $100 for the project. The plaque has been produced by Mementos Awards and was presented at the August Chapter meeting. We are planning to install the underwater plaque in the 2010 season. Replacement Buoy for the Eastcliffe Hall In spring with the help of Chris Holloway, François Malette, Brian Prince, Marg Barker, Frédéric Tremblay and Tom Scott (Buoy Director Thousand Island) we were able to build and install a new replacement custom 55 gallon buoy for the reported missing buoy. SOS Newsletter 5 Lock 22 SOS Ottawa chapter is proud to announce that a new buoy has been successfully installed for the Lock 22 site. Thanks to Barry Edgington, Terry Acker, Luc Lafontaine, Nancy Binnie, Andy Fytche and Murray Hollis. 2009 Buoy removal On Monday Oct 12th, SOS Ottawa removed the following 5 buoys for the 2009 season: Milles Roches Power House, Belly Dumper, Hoople Creek Bridge, Lock 22, Eastcliffe Hall and managed to squeeze in some diving at the same time. Thanks to the following members and volunteers for their help at removing the buoys: Barry Edgington, Dan Kenny, Frank & Julie Malette from Wet Beaver Scuba Charters and Luc Lafontaine. The buoys for the Rothesay and Conestoga were removed by Brian Prince and Marg Barker. Mark Labelle removed the buoy for the Fred Mercur dive site and reported the buoy as damaged and will need to be replaced soon. Future Projects: In November, Jérôme and I prepared a web based survey to allow members to voice their opinion on future projects and we announced the results the December meeting. In 2010 our main goal for projects will be to complete the Weehawk land plaque project and the Fred Mercur underwater plaque. Then we will be able to dedicate time and effort on new projects that members have voted on. Thank you: I would like to thank every member who has contributed at the meetings and projects this year. Without people like you, the mission of the organization cannot be forwarded. In particular, I would like to thank my fellow executive and special function members for their on-going support. Respectfully submitted by Luc Lafontaine, SOS Ottawa Chairperson. 1000 Islands The 2009 year started off with our annual get together. This year it was hosted by Barb and Rex Engel at their house in Brockville. In 2008 the chapter had 27 memberships with 34 members. In 2009 we had 24 memberships with 28 members. Memberships were down 11% and the number of members down 22%. Work continued on the land plaque to be installed in Brockville. Steve Hatch worked on the design and a mock concept version was presented to Brockville 6 February 2010 City Council for approval. Council approval was granted and final design details are being worked on by Doug Grant, the graphic designer who developed the existing heritage plaques in the city. The under water signs promoting the use of the chain at the Lillie Parsons were damaged last year. New signs were made of Lexan by D&D signs at no cost to the Chapter. They were installed in early September. The concrete wreck sign attached to the stern of the Daryaw need to be reenforced as the existing chain was rusting to the point where it would not support the weight. A stainless steel band was made to wrap around the concrete block and with a new chain it was installed in September. This coming year, we will continue repairs to underwater signs and mooring buoys. In August we plan to host a NAS 1 course in Kingston. We also plan on continuing with our Thursday nights dives, which provide an opportunity to perform inspections and repairs on underwater signs. Respectfully submitted by Tom Wilson, SOS 1000 Islands Chairperson. Toronto I. Research SOS Toronto continued its monitoring project on the wreck of the Sligo in Humber Bay, Lake Ontario. By measuring a set of datum points each spring and autumn, the project aims to identify any changes to the wreck over the seasons and from year to year. 2009 marks the fourth year of this ongoing monitoring project, with one more season planned to provide a unique, five-year overview of how this wreck has changed (and how it hasn’t) over time. II. Buoys SOS Toronto maintained buoys on three wrecks in Lake Ontario’s Humber Bay: the Sligo, Julia B. Merrill and Lyman M. Davis. A fourth buoy was also deployed on the wreck of the J.C. Morrison on Lake Simcoe in Barrie. The buoys on the Julia B. Merrill and J.C. Morrison were both reported missing for unknown reasons and could not be relocated. The buoys on the wrecks of the Sligo and the Lyman M. Davis were removed in the autumn for cleaning and winter storage. Our thanks go to Raimund Krob and Brent Hornick for the care of the Toronto and Barrie buoys, respectively. Please see the accompanying photographs of the spring buoy maintenance, courtesy of Raimund Krob. III. Public Outreach SOS Toronto Chapter meetings and lectures continue to be held at the University of Toronto’s Archaeology Centre, which has helped to increase our exposure to archaeological students and professionals. Our free public lecture series has attracted new members, as well as involvement with the wider archaeological community. For example, we plan to co-host an underwater SOS Newsletter 7 archaeology event with Toronto Chapter of the Archaeological Institute of America. Our 2009 Public Lecture Series featured the following speakers: • Feb. 11th: Wayne Abbott, “Deep Wreck Mysteries: HMCS Athabaskan, HMCS Regina, the Armenian and a 1630-40s wreck in the Baltic Sea” lecture and screening • Mar. 11th: Peter Twist, The Truth Behind Reel and Real Pirates: Master and Commander, Pirates of the Caribbean" with a demonstration of period weapon props • Sept. 9th: Simon Spooner (Marine Heritage Advisor, Ministry of Culture), "Marine Archaeology in the Caribbean and Ontario" • Oct. 14th: Walter Lewis, "River Palace: The Many Lives of the Kingston" lecture and book signing • Nov. 11th: Lisa Sonnenburg (McMaster University), "Finding the Needle in the Haystack: Using Geoarchaeology to Locate Submerged Sites in Ontario" The SOS-Toronto email list continues to be used to distribute news and notifications to SOS Toronto members, facilitating communication at the regional level. Email sent to [email protected] will be distributed to all members on the list, as long as the sender on the list as well. Our thanks go to Chris Phinney maintaining this important communication tool. IV. Plans for 2010 The Toronto Chapter of SOS plans to build on its successes into 2010. Plans include: • Our Annual General Meeting is scheduled for 7:00 on Wednesday, February 10th at the University of Toronto’s Archaeology Centre. Our speaker will be Elizabeth Greene (Brock University), who will speak at 8:00 on “Networks of Exchange: Two Archaic Shipwrecks off the Turkish Coast” • Staffing the SOS booth for the Toronto Outdoor Adventure Show, February 26th-28th: http://www.outdooradventureshow.ca/toronto/ • Buoying area wrecks • Final year of measurements in spring and autumn for the Sligo Monitoring Project • Public Lecture Series speakers • NAS 1 course to be offered October 1st-3rd • Recreational dives to wrecks in our region and/or field trips to marine heritage attractions Respectfully submitted by Jonathan Ferguson, SOS Toronto Chairperson. Hamilton In 2009 the Hamilton committee participated in a number of activities that included our ongoing quarterly meetings, the hosting of a NAS I Course and in organizing a number of side scan sonar searches off the Hamilton shoreline. 8 February 2010 This year we have changed our meeting location from the Hamilton Steam Museum to Rek & Tek Scuba located at 529 Upper Sherman Avenue. We like to thank Mich Wilson for supporting our committee with the free use of their classroom. Our next meeting is 7:30 PM March 11, 2010 and we welcome anyone interested in our activities to attend. We hosted a NAS I course July 3rd - 5th under the direction of Chris Phinney the Senior NAS Tutor along with Assistant Tutors Margaret Barker and David Taylor. The classroom portion was held at the Sir Wilfrid Laurier Centre while the open water survey was conducted on a wreck located off Confederation Park. Twelve students completed the course and we would like to thank Paul Chapple, Ted Skelton, Michael Stephenson and Bryan Thomas for their assistance. SOS Hamilton NAS 1 Class Photo Under the license of one of our members we have conducted a number of side scan sonar searches off the Hamilton shoreline. The purpose of these activities was to give our members an opportunity to learn about setting up search grids, how to calibrate the sonar equipment and how to interpret the sonar images in identifying potential targets. SOS Newsletter 9 Going forward into 2010 our Executive consists of newly elected Chairman Paul Chapple, Vice Chairman Walther Irie, Treasurer David Taylor, Secretary Paul Chapple, Project Director Michael Stephenson and Training & Buoy Director Chris Phinney. Our goals for this year are to attract new membership while promoting our activities within the local community. This includes being active in research, sonar training and participating in dive related events. Some of this year’s projects include a trip to the archives in Ottawa (March 25 to 27), hosting a NAS I Course in June (Date TBD) as well as continuing our sonar searches along the Hamilton shoreline. For more information on our committee and upcoming meetings or events please visit our site at www.soscentral.ca Respectfully submitted by Walther Irie, Past SOS Hamilton Chairperson Port Dover This year our group had the opportunity to work with Dr. Spooner [Marine Heritage Advisor, Ontario Ministry of Tourism and Culture] in regards to an artifact at the end of Long Point, and we did some side-scanning in Long Point Bay looking for an old barge. We also used the sonar to search for a wreck that was snagged by a trawler in 38 feet of water off Port Dover. We found the wreck, but didn't pin it down due to the weather. We actually went over it twice this year: put a temporary buoy on it, but the buoy went for a ride in a 40 knot wind and we had to relocate the site. For next year's search we have a rough idea of where to start, plus a few other locations (in Loran C: I'm too old to figure out GPS!) to pinpoint and dive on. We can't wait to get started on the 2010 season: I'm filling out the application for an archaeological license and setting up the new equipment for the side scan sonar and underwater camera systems! Respectfully submitted by Jim Murphy, SOS Port Dover Chairperson Windsor The vis in Lake Erie in the summer of 2009 was not the best for diving. We did get out a number of times. We did survey work on a wreck found 7 miles south west of Erieau in 60 ft. of water. We believe it is the propeller, wood steamer "Sun" - 192 ft. x.28 ft x 12 ft. It was lost in July, 1874 (side scan image attached). In July we were checking numbers off of Colchester once again. After checking numbers most of the day and not finding anything substantial of targets found in the 90s, we headed towards the "George Worthington" to do a dive. On the way to the wreck site, we came across a target on the sonar in 40 ft. of water. This 10 February 2010 turned out to be a "rum runner" boat. It was completely filled to the top of the gunnels with beer bottles. We also spent time checking targets off of Port Glasgow, Ontario. concrete came of the 2 days of searching. Nothing We are planning, for the summer of 2010, to look for the Marquette & Bessemer 2. It was the 100th anniversary of the sinking of this vessel in 2009. We went to a seminar put on by Andy Hebert (long time SOS member from London) in Port Stanley on December 5, 2009. SOS Windsor also installed buoys on the wrecks of the Locoing and Colonial and removed them in the fall. Side scan sonar image of an object believed to be the "Sun", lost in 1874. Respectfully submitted by Roy Pickering, SOS Windsor Chairperson Huron Shores The only event of note this year for our Chapter was our very small NAS 1 course, held the last weekend of August. Three eager students completed their course-work at Dive with Mar in London and then went on to a chilly open water day in Sarnia. In the coming year, we hope to ramp up membership and Chapter activites. SOS Newsletter 11 Special Function Reports -Ethics Committee After the successful implementation of the SOS Code of Ethics and Privacy Policy in 2007-8, I returned, as the Ethics Chairperson, to the issue of Canada’s failure to ratify the UNESCO 2001 Convention on the Protection of Underwater Cultural Heritage. Despite the involvement of the Canadian government and public heritage organizations like SOS in drafting the convention, Parliament has failed to ratify this important international treaty. This is despite the fact that the treaty’s logo is the San Juan, a wreck excavated by Parks Canada in Labrador. In November of 2007, I wrote on behalf of SOS to Prime Minister Harper, his ministers of Heritage, Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, and Canada’s Ambassador to UNESCO. Our only responses came from the Prime Minister’s Office and the Minister of Heritage, both of which said our letter would be forwarded to John Baird as Minister of the Environment. After two years of waiting, the reply we received from the Ministry of the Environment was … nothing. In November 2009, I wrote again on behalf of SOS, this time directly to the Minister of the Environment (now Jim Prentice) and sent copies to the PMO, the opposition leaders, their environment critics and Canada’s Ambassador to UNESCO. The reply from Mr. Prentice (the only one we received) is as noncommittal as those from two years earlier, and we are left to wonder what the Government of Canada has been doing on this front. We at Save Ontario Shipwrecks believe that the citizens of Canada deserve greater clarity and accountability on the issue of marine heritage from their elected representatives. Look for our letter and the minister’s response in the SOS Newsletter. I have also been active in a consultative capacity as Ethics Chairperson, answering ethical questions about our marine heritage. While any queries along these lines are welcome, please remember that my advice is the opinion of a practising archaeologist, not that of a lawyer, a police officer, nor a representative of the Ministry of Culture. Respectfully submitted by Jonathan Ferguson, Ethics Chairperson Ships Stores It has been a good year for sales in Ships Stores. It always seemed that when I was most busy with things going on in my life, I would get a flurry of orders to be shipped. We have had customers from as far away as Houston, Texas, Hamburg, New York and Brossard, Quebec. This is great exposure for SOS. A big seller this year was the NAS Guide to Underwater Archaeology. It is an amazing book providing great detail of the principles and practices of underwater archaeology for those interested in doing hands on work as well as for those just 12 February 2010 interested in reading up on the subject. Ships Stores has also added a number of other research and pleasure reading books about ships and the men and women that plied the lakes and rivers in Ontario. If there are any more books that you would like to see in Ships Stores please contact me and I will see what I can do. The Board has approved a change of practice with some of the profits that were realized in Ships Stores. In the past, some of the profits generated on items sold directly to customers were shared with the Chapter where the customer lived or at least the closest Chapter. This has been a very cumbersome accounting practice to calculate and record. For 2010, the profits returned to SOS Corporate from Ships Stores will be put into the SOS Heritage fund. Chapters may then apply for project funding from the available funds. In 2009 Ships Stores transferred $3,000.00 to SOS Corporate to be credited to the Heritage Fund. As a note of interest, we received notice that we are required to provide the Library and Archives Canada with two copies of our Field Guides of the various sites across Ontario, twelve in all. The slates will be listed in the national bibliography and the library database. One set will be made available for research and loan while the other will be held for preservation. While you are “surfing the net” take a few minutes to see what great items Ships Stores has to offer at: www.saveontarioshipwrecks.on.ca/QMstore/. The selection is ever changing and growing. Respectfully submitted, Margaret Barker, SOS Quartermaster Webmaster Traffic to the SOS website is down in 2009 by 9% over 2008 with a total of 39946 page views. However people have been staying 6% longer for an average of 2 minutes and 14 seconds. 56% of traffic comes from Search engines, while 23% is from referring sites and 20% is from direct usage of our domain name. Traffic comes from 2009 SOS website traffic by country. Canada primarily followed by some from the USA, Australia and the UK. (Google Analytics) Updates were done as often as possible. Progress has been made to develop a membership database through the help of Tom Wilson of Brockville. 2010 will be the year we allow chapters direct access to the membership system to be able to see their members. This was rolled out at the SOS corporate wide meeting in SOS Newsletter 13 February. The buoy status database is also being re-developed to allow for easier maintenance and easier updates. Currently the Buoy database is broken in regards to not showing site details, but this will be corrected once we have the new database up. Respectfully submitted, Brian Prince, SOS Webmaster Membership I am asking all members to do their part in promoting Save Ontario Shipwrecks. You will notice that there is a real downtrend to membership since 2005. Also there is a second column that show first year members that did not renew for a second year. I started this from the year 2000. The question we have to ask ourselves is how can we convince these members to renew their memberships. Have a safe and rewarding 2010 diving season.
