Weekly publication of the Royal Embassy of Cambodia to UK, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Norway, Sweden, Ethiopia and African Union ISSUE 51: 21 - 27 DECEMBER 2015 CAMBODIAN PREMIER INAUGURATES STUNG TATAI HYDROPOWER DAM CAMBODIA AND LAOS’ BILATERAL COOPERATION FURTHER STRENGTHENED The Stung Tatai Hydropower Dam located in Thmar Baing and Koh Kong districts, some 42 kilometers from Koh Kong provincial town, was inaugurated under the presidency of Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen on 23 December. This is one of the achievements of the Royal Government of Cambodia in response to the country’s development need, underlined the Cambodian premier. Continued on page (2) JAPANESE INVESTMENTS IN CAMBODIA ON THE RISE For the first eleven months of 2015, 242 Japanese companies investing in Cambodia – an increase of about 47 percent compared to the same period in the previous year, according to local media. During a State Visit to the Lao PDR from 21-23 Dec. 2015, His Majesty Norodom Sihamoni, King of Cambodia, granted a royal audience to President of the Lao PDR H.E. Choummaly Sayasone, in Vientiane, Laos, on 22 December. In the meeting, the state leaders expressed their satisfaction with the longstanding friendly relations between the two neighbors, and between the people of Cambodia and Laos. Both sides also informed each other of the socio-economic development in their respective countries and shared opinions on the future direction of cooperation between the two countries. The two state leaders appreciated the progress on border affairs as the two countries have fulfilled the majority of their collective border survey and demarcations and agreed to encourage relevant authorities in their respective countries to promptly address remaining issues in the spirit of being good neighbors. Moreover, they highly valued the results of the cooperation and mutual assistance in various areas over the past years which have brought real benefits to the people in the two countries. In the evening, the Cambodian monarch was hosted to a dinner by the Lao president. On 22 December, His Majesty the King laid a wreath at the foot of the Unknown Soldiers’ Monument, visited Sisaket Temple to present Buddha images to the temple, and visited the National Museum of Laos. The construction of Stung Tatai hydropower dam began in January 2011 by China National Heavy Machinery with a 42-year investment concession with five years for the dam’s construction at a total cost of US$540 million, and the rest 37 years for business operation. It is a large investment in electricity production in the country. Cambodia has generated a total of about 1,072 megawatts of electricity to supply the energy need in the country, especially in Phnom Penh Capital. CAMBODIA, CHINA STRENGTHEN COOPERATION ON LAW ENFORCEMENT AND SECURITY H.E. Gen. Em Sam An, Cambodian Secretary of State for Interior, met with visiting Mr. Hu Bin Chen, Deputy Director of Department of International Cooperation at the Ministry of Public Security of China to strengthen bilateral cooperation between the two countries, in Phnom Penh on 22 December. The National Bank of Cambodia (NBC) has issued ASEAN Commemorative coins to welcome the creation of ASEAN Community on 31 December, 2015, according to an announcement of NBC. “The NBC, together with the Royal Government of Cambodia, would like to express our congratulations to the ASEAN Member States for successfully moving another step forward in the process of regional integration. This significant achievement will be beneficial to all ASEAN nations,” said the announcement. The 40.70-millimeter and 31.103-gram coins with the face value of 3,000 Riel are made from 999 silver. The coins’ obverse displays Angkor Wat Temple, representing the Kingdom of Cambodia, and on the reverse, there are ASEAN flag with flags of the ASEAN Member States. The NBC will introduce the sale of these commemorative coins at 223,000 Riel (some US$55) from 25 December onward at NBC headquarters in Phnom Penh, pointed out the announcement. The aim of the meeting was to strengthen cooperation on security, information exchange, especially the fight against terrorism, cross border crimes, and so on, H.E. Gen. Em Sam An told local media, adding that the Chinese side pledged to provide skill training and technical materials to Cambodia. On 21 December, both sides reached a MoU which details their cooperation on law enforcement and security in 2016, in the presence of H.E. Gen. Chhay Sinarith, Deputy Commissioner General of National Police and Mr. Hu Bin Chen. 2 I S S U E 5 1 : 2 1 - 27 D E C E M B E R 2 0 1 5 VISIONS OF CAM BODIA CAMBODIA WINS EXPO MILANO 2015 SILVER AWARD SYMBOLIZES GREAT RECOGNITION FOR THE COUNTRY ANA TO LAUNCH DAILY DIRECT FLIGHT TO CAMBODIA NEXT YEAR All Nippon Airways Co., Ltd., a major Tokyo-based Airlines company known as ANA, will launch its daily direct flight to Cambodia in 2016. This information was revealed during a meeting here on 25 December between H.E. Mao Havannal, Secretary of State for Civil Aviation, and a visiting ANA delegation led by its General Manager Mr. Hiroshi Terai and Japanese Ambassador to Cambodia H.E. Kumamaru Yuji, according to the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation’s press release. The Silver Award Cambodia won from the 2015 exposition in Milan city of Italy (Expo Milano 2015) symbolizes great recognition for Cambodia and brings national pride to the country. The remarks were made here yesterday by Senior Minister and Minister of Commerce H.E. Sun Chanthol while hosting a press conference announcing the award. H.E. Sun Chanthol, also Chairman of the Cambodian Inter-Ministerial Committee for Participation in this world expo, expressed his congratulations to the inter-ministerial committee, organizers, artist performers, and Cambodian people living in Europe who have put so much efforts and support into making Cambodia’s participation to the Expo Milano 2015 a success. Competing with 91 other nations, he added, Cambodia was the only ASEAN country to receive an award by the World Expo Committee and Bureau of International Expositions (BIE) within the Clusters Pavilion category for its innovative development of the Expo theme – ‘Feed the Planet, Energy for Life’. The expo was held from May 1 to Oct. 31, 2015. Committing to a theme of Rice Grown on Culturally Rich Land, Cambodia showcased its expo materials in a 250 spare meter national pavilion visited by approximately 2 million participants. MORE INTERESTING PROGRAMS TO BE ORGANIZED FOR ANGKOR SANKRANTA 2016 The Union of Youth Federations of Cambodia (UYFC) will organize the fourth Angkor Sankranta with more attractive programs. Mr. Sok Sabayna, Representative of UYFC, made the affirmation in a recent meeting with APSARA National Authority in Siem Reap province. The Angkor Sankranta 2016 will be bigger than the previous events and the cooperation from APSARA National Authority is needed for the success of this event aiming to show off the solidarity of the Cambodian family as a whole and to contribute to maintaining Cambodian tradition, culture and custom, he underlined. Last year, the Angkor Sankranta attracted over 1 million national and foreign tourists to visit Siem Reap cultural province and generated a total income of almost US$70 million. There were various entertainment programs on the occasion including Khmer traditional art performances and games, chess competition, etc., as well as the show of a four-ton Nom Ansorm, a traditional Cambodian rice cake made from sticky rice, mug bean, and pork, which won on April 13, 2015 a Guinness World Record; a giant palm leaf hat of 191.5 kilograms; a giant Angrot (a fish catching tool) of 5.5 meters height; a giant palm juice container of 15 liters, and so on. Beside the giant Nom Ansorm, Cambodia also broke the Guinness World Record for the largest Madison dance with 2,015 participants, on April 15, 2015. Angkor Sankranta is organized annually on the occasion of the Khmer Traditional New Year in Siem Reap province, home to the famous Angkor temples. H.E. Mao Havannal expressed his support to the upcoming direct flight between the two countries, recalling that both sides have already reached a deal on air services. Cambodia-Japan direct flight is an initiative of Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen in order to promote tourism, trade and investment between the two nations. TECHNO FLYOVER TO BE OFFICIALLY INAUGURATED EARLY NEXT YEAR The Techno Flyover and an underpass will be put into official use on 5 January, 2016, according to Mr. Sam Piseth, Director of Phnom Penh Municipal Department of Public Works and Transport. The construction of the Techno Flyover of 382 meters long, 15 meters wide, and 5.2 meters high, the fourth flyover in Phnom Penh capital city, along with an underpass of 356 meters long and six to eight meters wide under the Russian Federation Boulevard, connecting Mao Tse Tung Boulevard and Kim Il Sung Boulevard, began on 9 September, 2014 with a total cost of over US$14 million by the Overseas Cambodian Investment Corporation (OCIC). Phnom Penh has currently three flyovers – the Kbal Thnal Flyover along Preah Monivong Blvd. adjacent to Preah Monivong Bridge, the January 7 Flyover at the intersection of Pet Lok Sang (Monks’ Hospital) traffic lights, and the Stung Meanchey Flyover. Besides, the Phnom Penh Municipality is planning to build another overpass at Hanoi Street traffic lights, another underpass at Canadia traffic lights, and a pavement for pedestrians along the riverside, from tourism information center near the Royal Palace to Preah Monivong Bridge 3 (Chbar Ampov). I S S U E 5 1 : 2 1 - 27 D E C E M B E R 2 0 1 5 PHNOM PENH INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT HITS THE 3-MILLION PASSENGER MARK Phnom Penh International Airport hits the record of 3 million passengers today, according to a press release of Cambodia Airports, the developer and operator of Cambodia’s international airports. The 3-millionth passenger was Ms. KONG Naleap, a Cambodia passenger flying back home from Hong Kong on a flight operated by Dragon Air. To celebrate the event and taking the opportunity of the Holidays Season, the airport staged a series of special features upon the arrival of the flight. One of them was a water cannon salute when the aircraft headed to its parking lot. At the luggage claim area, all passengers were surprised at the view of their luggage along with gifts with their names on the conveyor belt. Ms. KONG Naleap marveled at the particular souvenir given to her. from Phnom Penh International Airport since the beginning of this year 2015. Today’s achievement reflects the airport’s passenger traffic momentum which should report a nearly 16 per cent growth on a year-on-year basis. Compared to the previous year 2014, aircraft movements and freight traffic are expected to increase by 12 per cent and 13 percent respectively. “We have definitely reached a new dimension at the airport with this significant milestone. The on-going extension works have been planned to address future passenger growth and aim at overhauling the facilities. It will allow us to welcome our passengers with a further upgraded quality of service,” said Mrs. Chloé LAPEYRE, Phnom Penh International Airport . General Manager. Cambodia Airports launched in early 2013 a terminal extension program to double the capacity of the Phnom Penh’s platform to over 5 million passengers. Phase 1 of the investment is slated for completion by March 2016.
