The bridge, with 37.5 meter height, 12.5 meter wide and 2,220 meter long, which crosses the Mekong River and links Kandal and Prey Veng Provinces, is expected to be used in early April 2015. Hor Namhong received on Wednesday a visiting Japan’s Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs, H.E. Kazuyuki Nakane. In the Meeting, H.E. Hor Namhong expressed his warm welcome to H.E. Kazuyuki Nakane on his presence at the ceremony for casting concrete to connect the Tsubasa (Neak Loeung) Bridge. Continued on page (2) ………………. Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen cuts red ribbon to inaugurate the Russey Chrum Krom hydropower dam in Mondul Seima District of Koh Kong Province. Samdech Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, presided over on Monday morning the inauguration of the 338 megawatt Russey Chrum Krom hydropower dam in Mondul Seima District of Koh Kong Province. The construction project was carried out by China Huadian Corp. under a contract of a 35-year Build-OperateTransfer (BOT) with an investment of about USD 495 million. The project is expected not only to protect the area from flooding, promote the tourism destination, create jobs for the local people and improve their livelihoods, but also to increase a capacity of electricity supplies with sustainability, and augment the self-reliance on power, mainly accelerate the national development and reduce the poverty in the country. Currently, Cambodia has been operating some hydropower dams, including the 193.2 megawatt Kamchay, the 120 megawatt Stung Atai, the 260 megawatt Stung Tatai, and the 18 megawatt Kirirom 3, while some others are under construction. 1 ISSUE: 12 - 18 January 2015 PRIME MINISTER HUN SEN PRESIDES OVER CLOSING GIRDER CEREMONY ……………… CAMBODIA, JAPAN TO REACH AIR SERVICE AGREEMENT Cambodia and Japan reached an Air Service Agreement to promote the economic cooperation between the two nations, according to a press release of the Embassy of Japan. The Signing Ceremony on Air Service Agreement between Japan and Cambodia held on Wednesday afternoon at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation with a view to strengthening economic cooperation between the two countries, it said. Samdech Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia (Right Front), presided over on Wednesday the closing girder ceremony for Neak Loeung Bridge. The bridge will be part of the ASEAN highway and water way and it is also a vital part of the Southern Economic Corridor linking Ho Chi Minh, Phnom Penh and Bangkok City. Beside Neak Loeung Bridge, Japan has also funded the construction of the Cambodia-Japan Friendship Bridge in Phnom Penh Capital City and the Kizona Bridge in Kampong Cham Province. CAMBODIAN FOREIGN MINISTER RECEIVES JAPAN’S PARLIAMENTARY ………………… The Cambodian top diplomat also hoped that the relationship between Cambodia and Japan will see more and more progress and thanked profoundly the Government and people of Japan for their support and assistance for Cambodia’s peace, reconstruction and development. For his part, H.E. Kazuyuki Nakane said the concrete casting ceremony to connect the Tsubasa Bridge is an important witness of Japan’s assistance to Cambodia. He also affirmed that Japan will also continue to support the Khmer Rouge Tribunal. This agreement is made after both countries upgraded last year their relations to the level of strategic partnership. This will open for opportunities for direct flights between the two nations. RCAF, U.S. MARINES CONDUCT HUMANITARIAN ASSISTANCE EXCHANGE The Royal Cambodian Armed Forces (RCAF), including the Royal Gendarmerie, join hand in hand with the U.S. Marines with Headquarters Regiment, 3rd Logistics Group, stationed in Okinawa, Japan, to conduct a bilateral exchange exercise. The exercise, taking place from 12 - 23 January 2015, is aimed to strengthen the relationship between the two nations to ensure the ability for rapid contingency response in support of humanitarian assistance and disaster response, based on the U.S. Embassy’s Press Release. Cambodia Airports CEO, Emmanual Menanteau, said in a statement that the 3 million mark represented a symbolic high point, as the airport received just 2 million passengers in 2012. To cope with the steady increase, Cam- bodia Airports started an extension January 2014 Programme to expand the airport’s terminal and double its capacity. The new operation will be opened in 2016. Siem Reap is the gateway town for the UNESCO World Heritage site’s Angkor Archaeological Park, which is now the kingdom’s largest cultural tourist destination on the outskirts of town. CAMBODIA’S CUSTOMS REVENUE REACHES USD 1.34 BILLION IN 2014 In 2014, Cambodia earned a total customs revenue of around 5,455 billion Riel, roughly equivalent to USD 1.34 billion, an increase by 33.5 % if compared to the figure in the previous year. The remarkable rise in customs revenue clearly mirrored success gained by the country in trade facilitation, customs reform and administrative affairs modernization 2009-2013 and better Logistics Performance Index that dropped from the order of 129 to the order of 83 within the last four years. H.E. Aun Porn Moniroth, Minister of Economy and Finance, appreciated and encouraged General Department of Customs and Excise to increase the work performance in terms of effectiveness in collecting customs revenue for years to come. CAMBODIA-JAPAN BILATERAL TRADE IN 2014 2015 BRINGS GOOD PRICE FOR PEPPER The Director of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Department in Rattanakiri province, Mr. Soy Sona, said that one forth of over 400 hectares of pepper cultivated land in the province is ready for harvest. One hectare can provide approximately three tons of pepper. The start of 2015 brings encouraging market price of at least USD 10,000 per ton for pepper, especially that grown in the northeast provinces of Cambodia, according to local media reports. Market price for dry pepper is between USD 10 to USD 12 per kilogram or USD 10,000 to USD 12,000 per ton. Farmers and investors are positive about expanding their business of the crop with continuing good price. During the January-November period of 2014, Cambodia’s exports to Japan were valued at USD 716.7 million, up 31.5%, while its imports from Japan were amounted to USD 228.5 million, an increase by 19.3%, if compared to the same period of 2013, according to the data released by the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO). The main Cambodian products exported to Japan are clothes, footwear, agricultural and fisheries products, whereas the imported products from Japan are mainly cosmetics, machinery, vehicles and electronic devices. The major markets for Cambodian products are the European Union, the U.S., Canada, Japan, China, South Korea, and its neighbouring countries. 3 ISSUE: 12 - 18 January 2015 CAMBODIA’S OUTBOUND TRAVELERS REACH 800.000 IN FIRST 10 MONTHS OF 2014 The number of Cambodian outbound tourists was recorded at 800,000 in the first ten months of 2014, said Mr. Kong Sopheareak, Director of the Statistics and Planning Department of the Ministry of Tourism. Angkor Wat Temple : The World Heritage Improving cost of living, visa exemption, affordable air flight fees and direct flight connections, as well as desire to see other parts of the world are the main factors encouraging Cambodians to travel abroad, stressed Mr. Ang Kim Eang, President of Cambodia Association of Travel Agents. The major tourism destinations for Cambodians are China, Malaysia, Singapore, and many other ASEAN countries. For international foreign arrivals, Cambodia welcomed 3.6 million foreign visitors in the first ten months of 2014, up 6% as compared to the same period last year. The country is estimated to receive up to 4.5 million foreign visitors in 2014 and 5 million in 2015.
