Welcome to the Camdenton R-III School District, a place where “Purple Pride” runs deep in everything that we do.
I appreciate you taking the time to learn more about our students and the fall activities in which they participate.
It is because of proud traditions, committed kids, dedicated coaches, directors, and sponsors, combined with great
community support and an expectation of quality and sportsmanship, that we are able to offer this array of exciting
programs.
Over 90% of our high school students participate in at least one co-curricular or extra-curricular activity or club.
Extra-curricular activities typically provide a structure for students that frequently yield higher grades. In addition,
activities play a vital role in preparing a child to become a highly functional team member. It is high-functioning
teams, not an individual acting independently, that have the ability to bring resolution to community, state, national, and global issues. It is
also our belief that school activities provide our kids the opportunity to learn that good moral character, hard-work, dedication, and team-work
pay dividends not only on the court and field, but also for a lifetime.

It’s an exciting time to be a Laker!
I would like to take this opportunity
to introduce myself and welcome
you to a new school year and our
fall activities. As your building
principal, I look forward to the
opportunity to work with you to
make this year a successful one.
It is my belief that by working
together, we will achieve great successes and continue
the outstanding Laker tradition.
For the past four years, I have been working as the
Middle/High School Principal in the Shelby County
R-IV School District in Northeast Missouri. I have
truly enjoyed my time working with students, teachers,
parents, and community members to maintain a positive
learning community. I am extremely excited to be part
of the Camdenton R-III learning community and look
forward to helping our students succeed.
On a personal note, I have been married eleven years to
my wife, Tabitha, and we have two sons, Dylan, age 8,
and Logan, age 6. We are excited to be “Lakers”, and
we are looking forward to getting involved not only in
the school district, but also the community.
Extra-curricular activities are an extension of the
classroom and serve a significant role in our students’
education. Through hard work, dedication, and a
commitment to team success, students learn valuable
lessons that will help them become productive citizens
and adults. By participating in these activities, students
are also able to make a valuable contribution to their
teams, while learning the importance of character and
sportsmanship. I encourage you to continue to support
our students and recognize their efforts by displaying
that positive Laker Pride for our school, our teams, and
our community. We look forward to seeing you at our

Welcome to the Home of the Lakers
and Land of the Purple and Gold!
I'd like to take this opportunity to
welcome our fans and guests to this
fall season event. As the Director of
Athletics and Activities, I am honored
to be acquainted and associated with
the students, staff, and community
that makes Camdenton one of the
finest school districts anywhere.
Extra-curricular activities play a very special part in our
school’s educational program. Our school and community
are dedicated to our students’ pursuit of excellence and
the values taught by interscholastic competition. The
playing field is viewed as an extension of the classroom
where lessons about sportsmanship, self-discipline, and
perseverance are often learned. In addition, these
competitive endeavors offer opportunities for students
from diverse backgrounds to learn the value of teamwork,
cooperation, and mutual respect. We know it is qualities
such as these that will help develop the productive citizens
and sound leadership of tomorrow.
As spectators, we too are an important part of this
“classroom” and the lessons taught. We should always
remember that our actions will speak much louder than
our words. With this in mind, it is essential that we serve
as a positive example for our student body. Officials,
coaches, and student athletes will often fall short of
perfection. This is to be expected. We should remember
the words of Theodore Roosevelt when he said, “It is not
the critic who counts, not the man who points out how
the strong man stumbled, or where the doer of deeds
could have done better. The credit belongs to the man
who is actually in the arena; whose face is marred by the
dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs
and comes short again and again; who knows the great
enthusiasms, the great devotions and spends himself in
a worthy cause; who at the best, knows in the end the
triumph of high achievement, and who, at worst, if he
fails, at least fails while daring greatly; so that his place
shall never be with those cold and timid souls who know
neither victory or defeat.” Enjoy the contests scheduled
this season - our students, coaches and staff have worked
extremely hard to give their best performance.

Aiming to Ignite Excitement!
abit. Belief. Custom. Ritual. No matter the word
used, the Laker Cheerleading program has built a
strong tradition of excellence through the years. Striving
for success and continuing tradition has been the focus of
the cheerleaders throughout this past summer.

After practices in May, the cheerleaders attended the
National Cheerleading Association Camp in June at the
Country Club Hotel and Spa in Lake Ozark. Both squads
represented the Laker Nation well and received many
accolades. The varsity squad received the Top Team Award
in the Game Day Competition and the Top Team Award in
the Sideline Chant Competition. The girls also received a
Technical Excellence Award in Motions, a S.P.O.T. Award,
spirit sticks, and several superior ribbons. In the non-varsity
division, the JV squad followed suit, taking home the Top
Team Award in the Game Day Competition. They also
nabbed a S.P.O.T. Award, spirit sticks, and several superior
ribbons as well. Several girls on both squads were honored
with a nomination and selection as All-American
Cheerleaders.
Practices continued throughout the summer, preparing for
the Missouri Cheerleading Coaches Association (MCCA)
Regional Competition held in Willard. In the always
difficult Class 5 Small Division, the varsity earned a sixth
place finish and the opportunity to advance to the State
Cheerleading Competition in November. The JV squad
also competed at the MCCA Regional, taking home a
second place finish in the junior varsity division. This is
the third year in a row they have placed in the top three.
Once summer ends, the girls turn their attention to other
Laker teams, cheering them on to a victory. Whether it’s
the competition floor or the sideline of a game, the Laker
Cheerleaders aim to ignite excitement and enthusiasm for
all Laker fans! Go Lakers!

It Takes An Athlete to Dance -But An Artist To Be A Dancer
T
he 2009-2010 Laker Dance Team holds much talent,
with many returning members. The girls spent a good
portion of their summer practicing and preparing for the
upcoming season. In July, they attended MSU dance camp
where they competed against other schools in and around
the state of Missouri. Six of our dancers were chosen to
try out for Nationals. All six Lakers were selected to the
* All-American team. This is high praise for this team, as
only six can represent their school in the process and the
Lakers swept their audition. The Laker Dance Team was
also awarded the 110% Award and the Superior trophy for
all of the blue ribbons they earned on individual routines.
All of the girls on the team have had dance experience
and are a very talented group. They have worked hard at
choreographing all of their own routines to perform at the
halftime of all the home games this fall. Through their talent,
they hope to support the Lakers.

Laker Girls’ Dance Team
The 2009 Pride of the Lake Marching Band began
their rigorous season in late July. Expectations are
high this year, as the band emerged from their long
weeks of rehearsal more prepared and focused than
ever before. After all the basic marching practice,
music sectionals, and tedious drill setting, the band
is ready to put their finished product up against some
of the best bands in the Midwest.
This year's show is entitled, “Triumph of the Spirit.”
The show is staged as an exciting musical journey
through four seamless movements. It is based on
original music by composer Aaron Guidry. Guidry
is a prolific musician, writing and performing music
for the Las Vegas company of Cirque de Soleil. He
also finds time to create innovative and exciting
shows for some of the best bands in the country,
including former national champions.
The band will log hundreds of miles this fall as they
put their 2009 production up against some of the best
bands in the country. Contest appearances include the
Webbstock Marching Festival in Webb City, the
Valhalla Marching Festival in Springfield at Parkview
High School, and the Francis Howell Marching
Festival in St. Charles. The group will also visit
downtown St. Louis and the Edward Jones Dome
twice to compete in the Bands of America Super
Regional, which showcases 60 of the top bands in
the nation, and the Greater St. Louis Marching Band
Festival, which has become the unofficial state
championship for marching bands. Our percussion
section is first out of the gate, competing at the
annual Mozingo Percussion Festival at Francis Howell
North High School in St. Charles. There, they will
take on 30 percussion groups from all around the
Midwest.
The 175-member Pride of the Lake Band is led by Director of
Bands Paul Baur. Other faculty includes Assistant Band
Directors Alisha Baur, Amanda Fall, and Mike Fenn. Our color
guard is directed by Tim Roettgen, with assistant Sarah
Thompson. The drumline tech is Tom Pannullo of Missouri
State University,

put the stops to the Falcon ground game,
and the secondary “Silverback” trio of
Jake Williams, Blaine Bach, and Tim Snyder
pretty much put the stops on the Falcon
game.

Joplin 20
We hadn’t faced the conference foe
Eagles since 2003, but welcomed the
chance to continue a dominant, but very
tough, series against them. The Lakers drove
in the first period, mainly on a pass attack,
scored first, but were unsuccessful on the
PAT. The Eagles countered with a drive
for a TD and a PAT to take the lead 7-6.

August 29: Lakers 21
Springfield Kickapoo 24
The Lakers opened the season with a
traditional Conference foe at their place.
The night was muggy and this proved to
be a big factor for the Chiefs and their
two-platoon system.
The Chiefs got out to an early 7-0 lead,
but the Lakers answered with a 4-yard blast
by Josh Glover through the hole made by
Jordan Groves and Jake Kirtley. Kickapoo
got a second-quarter field goal to make it
10-7 to end the half.
The Lakers came out for the start of the
second half fired up and drove two back-toback touchdowns for a 21-10 lead. Then the
big factor of the night - the mugginess - set
in. The Chiefs used the rest of the third
period as well as most of the fourth to take
the lead 24-21. The Lakers made a valiant
effort in the last two minutes as the Laker
offensive line gave Kyle Simpson the time to
connect on several passes to Jake Dines and
Blaine Bach, driving the Lakers almost 80
yards, but to no avail, as time, downs, and
fatigue won out in the end.
September 5: Lakers 42
Springfield Hillcrest 14
The Lakers home opener was an ideal night
for football with an unusually crisp and cool
setting. The Hornets used a trick play on the
opening play from scrimmage to score from
70 yards out to take a 7-0 lead.
The Lakers then settled down and scored
35 unanswered points. The Hornets could
not stop the Laker rushing game as the big
purple train amassed 416 yards on 49
attempts. The “Hogs”, notably Breck Babbs,
Garrett Dyer, Jordan Groves, James Clary,
and Aaron Frederick, opened gaping holes
to allow Josh Glover to rush for 131 yards
and Blaine Bach to scoot for 157.
September 12: Lakers 26
Springfield Glendale 6
Another hot and muggy night in Springfield
(could Springfield be experiencing global
warming and the Lake area not? Re: the
Kickapoo game) as the Falcons hosted the
Lakers.
After a seesaw battle for most of the first
quarter, the Lakers put together a 90-yard
drive, thanks in part to the Laker Hogs
up-front domination and to the running of
Cayden Shockley. In the second quarter, the
Lakers drove 80 yards, thanks in part to you guessed it - those magnificent Hogs and
the running of Blaine Bach.
The second half proved to be more of the
same as the combination of Babbs, Dyer,
Groves, Clary, and Frederick on the line and
James Jarvis as the lead blocker gave Glover
plenty of room to roam with the ball as the
Falcons were pounded into submission.
Camdenton, with a brilliant run of 43 yards
by Blaine Bach, retook the lead only to have
Joplin counter again to tie the score at 14.
With less than a minute to go in the half, the
Lakers attacked with the famous “last minute
drive.” Kyle Simpson completed a 40-yard
pass to Jake Dines and then with 8 seconds
left, the Laker Hogs opened a hole for Josh
Glover to dash in. Lakers, 21-14 at the half.
The third quarter found both teams
threatening, but to no avail. Early in the
final period, the Lakers got a safety on a
high snap on a punt attempt by the Eagles.
Joplin scored with five minutes left in the
game, but the Lakers offense ground most of
the time left and the defense held on for the
victory.
September 26: Lakers 27
West Plains 13
We traveled the long trip to West Plains to
take on the Zizzers (probably the best 0-5
team in the state; they play ya tuff). The first
quarter was an up-and-down-the-field battle
of goose eggs. The second quarter, the
Lakers finally turned up the heat and took a
13-0 lead into the half.
The third quarter was all the guys in red as
they scored a touchdown and then extended
a score into the fourth quarter, all the while
controlling the ball. The Lakers had only
three plays from scrimmage in the third
quarter. With the score tied early into the
fourth period, the Lakers regained control
and zapped two quick scores to take a 27-13
lead and held off a late Zizzer comeback to
take the win.
October 3: Lakers 21
Nixa 14
Homecoming found the Nixa Eagles coming
to town. This is the first time these two
teams have met on the gridiron. The first
quarter was scoreless. In the second, both
teams managed a touchdown and PAT
making the score 7-7 at intermission.
In the third, the Lakers scored early to take
the lead only to see Nixa come back and tie
it. Then, in the waning minutes of the period,
Blaine Bach scooted loose and sprinted 47
yards for what became the go-ahead and
winning touchdown. The fourth quarter
featured a defensive struggle for both teams
as Jake Kirtley made two QB sacks and the
Lakers held on to go 5-1 on the season.
October 10: Lakers 40
Springfield Parkview 21
The Lakers traveled to Springfield for their
last of three visits there and took on the
revived Parkview Vikings. The Vikings had
broken a long losing streak the week before
and they were looking for more in the win
column.
Camdenton scored on

scrimmage and on the
fifth play from the
L.O.S. to take a
commanding lead.
Parkview scored
touchdowns in the final
period, but it was all
Lakers as Josh Glover
ran for 176 yards and
Kyle Simpson threw
for 152 yards. The big
Hogs up front opened
holes for the good guys
in white and closed hole
for the bad guys in green.
This victory was Coach Bob Shore’s 350th
of his career that included stints at Jasper
and East Newton along with his tenure at
Camdenton.
October 17: Lakers 28
Waynesville 10
In the annals of footballdom, there is no
bigger rivalry than this game. This is the
equivalent of MU-KU, Michigan-Ohio State,
the Red River Rivalry. It was a crisp,
beautiful fall night. They were the defending
State champs. A Laker victory would make
us Ozark Conference Champs. It was the
first game of State qualifying District play.
In this rivalry, there never has been a dull,
meaningless game. What more could you
ask for? It was Friday night in Lakerland.
The Lakers took the lead in the first quarter
on a 63-yard run by Bach, his first of four
that he would score that night. The Tigers
came back in the second period with a
touchdown and a field goal to go in at
half with a 10-7 lead.
In the second half, the D-hogs up front and
the linebacker duo of Nick Giordano and
Jake Kirtley kept the Waynesville ground
game at bay. Meanwhile, Kyle Simpson and
the boys on O swung 21 unanswered points
on the board. Bach finished the night with
174 yards, managing this on his deceptive
speed and with his ability to wait on his

Lebanon 28
Our nearest rival, and the second game of
District play, brought an overflow crowd to
the J.O.D. with a sea of purple on one side
and a sea of yellow on the other. The
Yellowjackets had not beaten the Lakers in
15 years and they had a highly talented QB
to try to break the streak.
The night was in the 40’s and a bit chilly, but
the players were heated up for battle. The
first quarter proved to be a defensive battle
as both teams exchanged series after series,
with the Lakers stopping their passing attack
and the Yellowjackets stopping the Laker
ground game.
The second quarter came alive with offense
as the two teams battled to a 14-14 deadlock
by the half. In the third period, the Lakers
scored to take the lead by 7. The fourth
quarter proved to be all Lebanon as they
put 14 on the scoreboard to take the lead at
28-21, holding off a Laker comeback in the
final minutes. Dines had five knockdown
passes to lead the Laker defense and Bach
had 109 yards rushing to head the Laker
ground attack.
October 31: Lakers 21
Rolla 41
The final game of state District playoffs
saw the Lakers as the guests of the Rolla
Bulldogs. The first quarter was a scoreless
battle, but in the second quarter both teams
broke loose and scored a pair of touchdowns.
The Lakers led at the half, 14-13.
In the third quarter, Rolla broke the game
open by stopping the Lakers on their initial
drive and then scoring 21 unanswered points,
and ultimately, took the victory. The Lakers,
due to injuries, were without their starting
tailback and quarterback, but the team
stepped up and made a valiant try. This was
Coach Mike Silverwood’s 400th game as a
coach over a 36-year period.

our senior year! I’ve been
waiting for this year since
fifth grade. Now I can’t
believe it’s here. I started
playing football in fifth grade in kids club
football. Then in seventh grade we went
undefeated, which is when the dream begins.
I do not have enough room to write all the
good times and things learned, but my
favorite moment was beating Waynesville
last year to win Conference. I was very
proud to make All-Conference and AllDistrict, but that isn’t good enough because
our season was cut short. I hope and pray
that our season is longer this year. Football
will always hold a special part in my heart.
After all, now I will always be a part of the

“I joined the wonderful
sport of football as a
sophomore. I didn’t know
much then because it was
my first year playing the game. My junior
year I got a little more playing time and got
to know my teammates and friends better.
My teammate and good friend, Tommy
Stevenson, gave me the role of chief for my
senior year. During this upcoming season
I am hoping to start in games, earn a letter,
and gain a State ring with a perfect season.
After high school I want to go to Truman
State in Kirksville, Missouri or Iowa
Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant, Iowa.
I hope to get there on some kind of sports
scholarship.”

in ‘08 and Coach Silverwood breaking his
white boards before games. There is no

lights of J.O.D. stadium.

school could have and I can’t believe it
happened so fast. I have gained many
friendships and a brother-like bond with my
teammates that I am very thankful for. Also,
I would not be the person I am today if it
wasn’t for the coaching staff we have. It has
been an honor to play for all the coaches on
our sideline. My teammates and I all are
working towards the same goal this season
and that is to bring the Laker Nation another
State Championship! I will do my best along
with my teammates to make sure that goal
becomes reality. This season means a lot to
the class of 2010 because we will always be

sense of camaraderie that

grade the ’05 team won State and at that
moment I decided our team would too.
We’ve waited and watched the upper classmen fight their hardest and play their game.

This year’s Laker
Team will be built
around one key
ingredient and that is “SPEED”. This
year’s team has been blessed with a group
of players that can run.
Laker Football
2009
The offense looks to be run by the double
threat of Shane Hardman, who is just as
dangerous as a runner as he is a thrower.
Also in the mix at quarterback are two
talented seniors, John Peterson and Lee
Tenenoff, who are both capable, athletic,
and experienced. Sophomore newcomer
Jonathan Manning also shows promise at
the quarterback position.
The backfield looks lightning-fast with
Jacob Dines, Kevin Montgomery, and
Cayden Shockley all available for action.
Dines is capable of playing a variety of
offensive positions and the Lakers will
look to find ways to get the pigskin into
his hands. With these cat-quick backs,
look for the Lakers to go out of a shotgun
set more often and try to create space for
these players to operate.
The fullback position this year has a
multitude of players vying for action, led
by seniors Ben Smith, Chris Howery, and
Sean Brady. Matt Buscher and David
Huffman also look to contribute to the
fullback position as well as the offensive
line.
Once again “SPEED” is the main theme
as we talk about the “09” receiving corp.
Dines, Shockley, Alex Craig, Colton
Ridenour, T.J. Scott, and Chris Sullens all
can run and catch and look to add to the
Lakers’ ability to succeed through the air
in “09”. Clayton Melville, Levi Calvert,
Brice Babbs, Derek vanKluyve, and Austin
Ray all look to contribute at the tight end
position, as well as the offensive line.
Speaking of offensive line, this year’s
edition of Hogs will be a hard working,
fun group to watch. Anchoring the “O”
Line will be seniors Nick Hale, Aaron
Frederick, and junior Jordan Long with
the added potential of Clayton Melville
contributing at the tackle position. Ryan
Shoffner, Caleb Oliver, Eli Schmidt, Matt
Kenney, Tate Stout, Matt Koenig, and
Nathan Hamilton all look to find playing
time on the “O” Line in “09”.
The Lakers Defense will also be built
around the key ingredient of speed. The
Lakers will be experienced and mobile in
the secondary with returning lettermen
Cayden Shockley at free safety and Kevin
Montgomery, Jacob Dines, Alex Craig,
Coltin Ridenour, Alan Craig, T.J. Scott,
Quincy Smothers, Matt Spanburg, Jordan
Crabtree, Gunner McGurie, Justin
Daughtery, Ryan Capps, Adam Horman,
and Jordan Mueller all having the capability
to contribute.
The outside and inside linebacker positions
are open to a host of players. Lee Tenehoff,
Eric Jones, Chris Howery, Chris Sullens,
and returning starter Shane Hardman
will anchor down the outside linebacker
positions while Ben Smith, Sean Brady and
Eli Schmidt will all look to play the inside
linebacker positions.
This year’s version of the defensive line
looks tall and fast at the defensive end
position with Levi Calvert, Derek
vanKluyve, Clayton Melville, Brice Babbs,
and Austin Ray looking to anchor both
sides of the defensive line. Jordan Long,
Aaron Frederick, Ryan Shoffner, Matt
Keeney, and Kyle McCrackin look to form
a brick wall in the interior defensive line.
The Lakers kick return and kick coverage
teams look to be strong this year as well,
starting with returning place kicker and
punter Chris Sullens. Sheldon Gilbert
looks to back up Sullens in the kicking
department. The kick coverage teams look
to be led by speedy coverage players like
Alan Craig, Coltin Ridenour, Ben Smith,
and Sean Brady.
This season’s schedule starts out with the
visiting Kickapoo Chiefs, followed by a trip
to Springfield to play the Hillcrest Hornets,
then back home to play the Glendale
Falcons, followed by a long road trip to
Joplin. West Plains comes to the J.O.D. in
week six and the Lakers will travel to Nixa
for an out-of-conference game in week
seven. Parkview comes to Lakerland for the
last regular season game before the start of
all-important District play.
This year, just as last year, the top two
teams in the District will advance to the
play-offs. The Lakers start District play
with back-to-back road games leading off
with the Waynesville Tigers, then traveling
to Lebanon to play the Yellowjackets. The
Lakers finish the season at home against
the Rolla Bulldogs. As was seen last year,
the new district set-up creates an exciting
season all the way to the last tick of the
clock during the regular season. The goals
for this year’s Lakers are to defend their
“08” Conference Championship and
advance to post season play. As always,

he 2008 Volleyball Season was one of the
most successful in school history! Last year’s
young volleyball squad may have been a surprise to
some, but never underestimate the Lakers! “It is
teams like this that make you smile,” Coach
Gulshen comments. “We didn’t have just one
super star. This team of young, gritty, hard-working kids worked
together and found success. I am so proud of those girls. It was
definitely a team effort in 2008. Players gave their best everyday
in practice and we kept improving all season long.” The 2008 team
was lead by two All-State Seniors -- Bailey Lupardus, a three-year
varsity setter and hitter, and three-year starting libero, Brittney
Sedillo, along with senior utility player Marissa Bergthold.
“These girls made tremendous contributions to their teams over
their tenure and we will miss their experience and enthusiasm,”
states Coach Gulshen.
In 2008, the Lakers hosted their first Lake Volleyfest with eight
formidable teams from across the state competing for the inaugural
crown. The Lakers dominated pool play all day and then had to fight
through tough bracket play, defeating 1A State Champs Sacred Heart
in the semifinals and Francis Howell North from St. Louis in the
final match to capture the crown. Our girls had to come from behind
and really fight for this championship title. They were determined to
win and excited to be our first Volleyfest Champions.
In District play, the second-seeded Lakers overpowered Jefferson
City to win the semi-final game and were then matched against the
top-seeded Helias Crusaders in the Championship match. The
Lakers had lost a closely contested match just a week before at
Helias and the Lakers were seeking revenge. The young Laker team
played with an intimidating determination, which left the state ranked
Helias team frustrated and defeated. “We played incredible in
District play. It was definitely a great day to be a Laker!” Coach
Gulshen remarks.
The Lakers continued on to sectional play where they were matched
against Willard. Again, the Lakers stuck with their game plan and
were able to dismantle a very talented and experienced Willard team,
ending their season as one of the top eight teams in the state.
With the memories still fresh in mind, excitement and anticipation
is brewing for the 2009 season. Hungry for continued success,
with many returning players, the Lakers are hoping to build another
tremendous team. Junior Shelby Metzger will be returning and
leading the team as setter. The setter position is an essential position
to fill and we have a lot of confidence in Shelby. She will work
hard and do everything we ask her to do. Senior Chelsi Libby is
also expected to be a contributor in this spot.

Two All-Conference middle hitters, senior Jessica Smith and junior
Haley Baker both return and will give the Lakers experience in the
middle. Neither of these girls are as big as they play but they work
hard and are great competitors. We will definitely be outsized in this
position, but these girls find a way to win and will not let size be the
determining factor for success. Our outside positions could be
contested all season long. We have returning juniors Sierra Comer,
Dixie Webster, Emily Dalton, Stephanie Cahail, and Morgan
Larrington all capable of contributing successfully as outside hitters.
Also capable of stepping up to the varsity level will be sophomores
Cassie Hale and Emily Collum, both who add height to the roster.
Seniors will be leading the team on defense with Nickie Branting
and Amy Osborn as defensive specialists. Both of these spunky
competitors will be expected to bring the fire back to this team,
making a difference in the win column for the Lakers. “Often the
most important and overlooked area is digging and passing, and
defense was a real key to our success last year. We expect Nickie
and Amy to be able to control the game with their defensive
abilities,” says Coach Gulshen. Either of these girls, along with
junior Kali Kuse, will be able to fill the libero spot.
With several returning players all capable of contributing, passion
may be the key for success. “Everyone has the will to win; it is the
will to prepare to win that will make the difference.” -- Bobby Knight
“We always start the season with less experience than most teams.
Our conference opponents spend a lot of time on the court in the
off-season through club programs. Most of our athletes are multisport athletes who wear the Laker uniform all year, competing for
their school in other sports. We have to work harder than others
in the summer and in practice every day to catch up,” Gulshen
comments. “It is amazing
to me we are able to do
that, but I think it is a
credit to the work ethic
and expectations that our
kids bring to the gym. We
are looking forward to the
‘09 season! I think this
team will play with heart
and passion and when a
team does that, anything is

“It is weird to think
that this is my last
year of high school.
I still feel like a
freshman and
probably still act like
one, too. Volleyball was a great experience and I will miss
all my fellow athletes dearly. We had a great season last
year, finishing in the top eight in the state, and I expect us
to do even better things this year. If you don’t know
already, we probably have one of the more ornery senior
classes ever. We love to talk and laugh a lot, but not always
at the best of times. We just like to enjoy each other and

“Since the time I started playing in the seventh grade,
I’ve come to love the game of volleyball. I’ll never forget
the journey I have taken over the past five years. It all
started with two outstanding coaches, Coach Stoelting and
Coach Pfender. I enjoyed my two years of middle school
volleyball very much, but it was a huge change when I got
to high school. I think the biggest change was the fact that
in high school sports you actually depend on your team.
It is not an individual sport. So far it’s been an amazing
three years and I hope to have an ever better year next year!

Soccer 2009 Excellence!
The Laker Soccer program would like to
say thank you to all those who support us
both during the season and in the off-season.
We would not be where we are today without
the support, dedication, and hard work of
numerous parents, community supporters,
volunteers, and students. The Camdenton
Laker Soccer program, entering its twelfth
season, is looking to establish itself among
the conference and the district. This is all
possible in large part because of the time and
effort put in by so many people that you will
not see roaming the sidelines or playing on
the field during a match.
Our main focus this year will again be
“Excellence”. We will be applying this
theme not only on the field, but also in the
classroom and away from time at school.
This goal and belief will be included in the
way we conduct ourselves on a day-to-day
basis. Both at practices and at games
we will expect nothing less than excellence.
In the classroom and in the community, we
will strive to excel. In our personal lives, in
regard to relationships and achievements, we
will aim for excellence. Our team will work
each day not only on our soccer skills and
the pursuit of a District title, but also on
making quality decisions and life choices
that will make us successful young men.
Last season was full of emotion. There
were highs and there were lows, but there
is no doubt that a foundation was laid for
the future of Laker Soccer. We started the
season playing a very tough schedule.
Games against Helias, Kickapoo, and
Glendale really set the tone of physical play
for the remainder of the season. The team
then went on to win the 5th Annual Laker
Shootout in the middle of the season. The
turning point in the season came not during
a game, but after a game on the way home.
After losing to Rolla during the regular
season, the whole attitude of the team
changed. Many of the players saw what was
in our grasp and decided right then and there
to strive to achieve it.
This attitude and improved play took the
team all the way to their first District
Championship game in seven years.
Ironically, the last time the team had
played in this game it was against the same
opponent and at the same site: at Rolla
against Rolla, in 2001. Still feeding off
the emotion of their previous match up,
the Lakers were up for the challenge.
The game was very physical and both teams
played very well. The Lakers got on the
board first with Rolla later tying the game,
1-1, at the end of regulation. The game went
into sudden death overtime just as it did
seven years prior. With no goals scored, the
game went into penalty kicks, again just like
the game in 2001. Back and forth, back and
forth, both teams scored one by one. The
Lakers made 6 straight PK’s but were unable
to score a seventh as Rolla was crowned
District Champions. Just like that, the
season was over. But there were many
lessons learned during that championship
game that will only motivate this Lakers
team in the upcoming season.
Going into this season, hard work,
togetherness, and consistency will be
some key areas that will be focused upon.
The team made some strides last season,
and in order to get back to the level of play
and surpass last year’s accomplishments,
the Laker soccer team must stay hungry each
and every day. Our goal is “To be pleased,
but not satisfied.” It will not be easy due to
the fact that there are seven very instrumental
seniors that will need to be replaced. But
if the players put their minds to it and
dedicate themselves, anything is possible.
The seniors from last season’s team will
definitely be missed. Most of them had
spent four years in the program and have
had a huge impact on not only last season,
but on the entire program. They each did
a great job of sacrificing for the team by
putting individual accolades aside and
leading a young team to a great season.
They leave some huge shoes to fill and will
definitely be missed both in the games and
in practice.
This season, the senior reins will be
turned over to a new group of experienced
individuals. The 2009 seniors are Jeff
Dorhauer, Nate Buttram, Spencer Thompson,
Ryan Moriearty, Matt McDermott, Grant
McCurdy, Travis Miller, and Connor Agniel.
Moriearty was voted onto the Laker Shootout
All-Tournament team along with being
selected as 2nd team All-District. Both
McDermott and Buttram were selected as
Honorable Mention All-District. Jeff
Dorhauer was named 1st team All-District,
1st team All-Conference, District 10
Defensive Player of the Year, and named to
the All-Region team. Each of these seniors
will play an important part in this year’s
team. Their leadership and experience will
drive this team each and every day.
Along with this senior class, the Lakers
return other starters from last year’s team,
such as top goal scorer Rayder Bennett, as
well as Jeron Sinclair, Caulin Atkins, and
Nick Huey. These juniors, as well as many
others, will be expected to continue to
improve on a day-to-day basis and play
quality soccer. Overall, this season’s team
should have some depth in order to sustain
the style of play that is needed in order to
be successful.
This year’s coaching staff remains the same
as last season. Coach Ingold is the varsity
coach, while Coach Marlow heads up the JV.
Coach Garagnani will once again be working
with the goalkeepers.
We would love to see you out at a few, if not
all, of our games this season. We really look
to make some improvements in a few areas
and hope to be competitive and ready to
compete each and every night. We have a
very tough schedule this season, but with
enough focus, teamwork, and preparation, we
feel as though we will be able to come away
with some very positive results this season.

“It’s crazy to think I’m already
a senior. I’ve been playing
soccer as long as I can
remember, starting with
LOSA, and then working my
way up to our childhood traveling team, The
Rockets. My favorite memory is when we were
in Moberly and it was pretty much a hurricane
outside. Josh Baldwin played me a through ball
and I scored the game winner.
I’m really looking forward to this season. I think
we have a strong team and if we work hard and
play at our fullest potential, we could finish this
season out on a high note. I want to say thanks to
all of my coaches. I wouldn’t be near where I am
now without all of them.”

“The last three years seem
to have flown by. I have a
similar feeling to the one
I had going into freshman
year, except there’s more
pressure. I’ve had a couple
of great coaches in the past four years. Coach
Marlow does an excellent job with the JV, and
Coach Ingold has really done a great job. I
remember when we first saw him, we thought he
was another player, but he turned out to be a great
coach. Probably my most memorable moment
was a home game last year when Jake Schuster
found a toad and put it on the concession stand as
a joke, but Mr. Brother didn’t find it so humorous.
These past four years have been great, and I owe
that to God, my family, team, and coaches.

famous senior quote. I’m so
psyched for this upcoming
season. It’s our final year
together to prove ourselves.
Most of us have been playing
together since we were little kids, and I’m looking
forward to leaving our mark on Camdenton Laker
Soccer. I still remember my first day of two-adays as a freshman and hearing crazy rumors and
being scared out of my mind. But I’m here. I
survived every “suicide,” every “nightmare,”
every mile, and every down-and-back. I’m better
for each one of them.”
I’m extremely thankful for our dedicated coaching
staff. Coach Marlow, who continues to teach
young players the game and to prepare them
for varsity soccer. Then, we are lucky to have
Coach Ingold who works very hard to develop his
players and push them through to the next level,
but also to teach them to be better men. We are
all very thankful for everything he does.”

“As most people could have
guessed, soccer is a very large
part of my life. I have been
playing the sport since I was
about three years old. Soccer
has taught me many things,
including teamwork, patience, skill, and much
more. It has increased my physical capabilities
and it has given me something to do while I am at
home. My favorite moment during the past few
years was when we left Nick Smith at McDonalds
after an away game. I love soccer and this team
has given me a chance to express that while also
giving me great teammates to play with.”
“Camdenton Laker Soccer is
probably the last thing anyone
would have guessed I’d be a
part of. From seventh grade
all the way up to the end of
my freshman year, I was a
football player. During the following summer,
however, I made a choice in my life that would
change me for the better. I began training for
my first season on a soccer pitch. It was tough
making the transition, but through determination
and the encouragement of my fellow teammates,
I became a soccer player. Since then, I have
made countless memories that I wouldn’t trade for
anything. While learning more and more about
the game every day, soccer has made me a better
person and all I can do is thank everyone who
supported me through these last few years - God,
my parents, the coaching staff, my teammates, and
the fans. You all have my gratitude and I hope my
efforts have contributed to the tradition of this
program. This year will be better than the last and
I know my classmates feel the same as we look

and fast-paced game, I’ll miss the
camaraderie and the brotherhood we have
among us all. From the meal that we eat
as a family before every home game, to
the restless school day before a big game,
we are all always there for each other.
But this season, it’s time for me to step
up and be a leader so we, as a team, can
create a pathway for the future of
Camdenton soccer.

Something To Be Proud Of!
Softball
2009
Coming off a record-setting eighteen
win season and second place finishes
in the Buffalo, West Plains, and
Springfield tournaments, optimism has
never been higher as the Lady Laker
Softball team and Coach Vest enter their
tenth season together. There are several
good reasons for the optimism that
surrounds this year’s edition of the
Lady Lakers. First of all, the team only
graduated four seniors from a team that
finished second in the ultra-competitive
Ozark Conference. And while two of
those seniors were three-year starters
and the other two played key utility
roles, Coach Vest feels very confident
in her team’s ability to fill those vacated
positions. Coach Vest addressed the
loss of her seniors by saying, “You
can’t deny their importance to last
year’s success and there is no doubt
that we will miss Julie, Valerie, Kelsey
and Chelsea, but I always say that
adversity is just an opportunity waiting
for someone to step-up and seize it.”
With that in mind, Coach Vest
commented further on filling those
vacated positions by stating, “Right
now I am giving several players an
opportunity to step into those corner
positions and solidify our infield.
I am very confident that with Katie
Kilpatrick, Bailey Slack, Rachel
Murphy, and Sara Johns I am going
to be able to find the right combination
to successfully fill the voids that
currently exist at third and first base.”
Another reason for Coach Vest’s
optimism can be found in the quality
of the returning starters to this year’s
edition of the Lady Lakers. Jessica
Colliver, an All-Conference selection,
returns to the mound for her junior
season. Her battery mate, Nikki
Jeffries, also an All-Conference
selection, returns for her sophomore
campaign. According to Coach Vest,
“Good teams are always strong up
the middle, and when you add
returning shortstop Morgan Jones and
centerfielder Sophie Thompson to Jess
and Nikki, the middle of our diamond
is in very good hands for the next
couple of years. I also feel very
fortunate to have so much depth in my
pitching staff. With Jessica Colliver
and Katie Kilpatrick, both who have
had great success on the varsity level,
along with an improving Sarah Decker
and a promising newcomer, freshman
Jessica Schultz, the pitching staff is in
great shape.”
And finally, reasons for optimism can
also be found in the speed and improved
ability to bunt found on this year’s Lady
Laker’s team. Coach Vest addressed
that facet of the team’s assets stating,
“This may be the fastest team that
I have ever put on the field. I truly
believe that Sophie and Morgan
possess as much speed and bunting
ability as anyone in the conference.
I am also convinced that I will be able
to utilize the speed of Bailey Slack and
senior Jessica Maher on the bases this
year. I am also confident that our
improved ability to bunt the ball will
further take advantage of our overall
team speed, maximize our ability to
advance runners and score runs, and
add to the excitement that this team
will bring to the field every night.”
Coach Vest concluded her preview of
this year’s team by saying, “I love
softball and the excitement and
challenges that each new season
brings, and I truly enjoy teaching such
a fine group of young ladies, but most
of all I am excited about the potential
of this year’s team. I really hope that
everyone finds a way to attend some
games this year and if they do, I am
sure that they will share in my
excitement over this year’s team as
we navigate our way through a very
challenging schedule. Finally, I would
like to say that the team and I think
that we are fortunate to be able to play
at such a beautiful complex. We truly
thank the maintenance department for
its upkeep of the facility, and a big
thank you to all of those who have
been responsible for its construction
and continued improvements.”

#18 Sara Johns
“Where have the years gone? I’m a
senior this year! I have been playing
softball for three consecutive years now.
I didn’t play softball my freshman year,
but played K-8. I always regret not
playing softball my freshman year, but
having Coach Vest for basketball made
me want to play softball. I will always
remember Coach Calbert and I talking
about movies and video games on the
bus; but he still pushed us to do our
best. One thing I will miss is having a
good time with the team. Thanks to Coach Vest, Coach Calbert,
Coach Amato and the team for an unforgettable three years.

“Softball has been my life. I cannot
imagine high school without being a
part of this team. Coach Vest and
Coach Calbert have always pushed me
to be the best I can be for my team.
They have taught me that dedication
and hard work never go unseen. I have
also learned from my teammates that
without passion and teamwork, there
will never be success. Last year, we
won the most games in a season.
This year, with our coaches pushing us
harder and harder each practice, we will win even more.”

“Softball, as in all sports I play,
has taught me discipline for
self-motivation and as a team
player. I enjoy gaining all the
friendships that come from the ups
and downs of the season. Win or
lose, you still have the team and the
confidence you build from that
team. After leaving Camdenton for
a year and playing softball for the
Winter Haven Blue Devils I can
already feel the challenges ahead of
me and look forward to it. I would like to thank Coach Calbert
for welcoming me back and for showing me how to be confident
and aggressive. I would also like to thank both Coach Calbert
and Coach Vest for all the motivation and support. Through all
the blood, sweat, and smiles, I would love to thank my mom who
taught me to never give up, no matter how hard the challenge.
This year’s season will definitely be a challenge for me, but I’m
excited and anxious for the season to kick in.”

everything about softball - except taking ground balls! I want to
thank mom, dad, and all of the coaches for pushing me to be a better
person. Softball has made high school very enjoyable and I’ll miss

“I’ve been playing high school softball since my freshman year.
Being a part of this team has been a great experience. As a team,
we have learned that if you don’t work together you’re not going to
accomplish anything. The coaches are amazing and I couldn’t ask
for any better. Playing for these guys has taught me so much. I

dedication that becomes
more intense the better you
become. In the end, how
good you are depends on
how dedicated you were.”
In 2008,
the Laker
Cross Country team unveiled
a new training regimen that
included more miles and more
attention to consistent pace
training. In the first year we
experienced mixed results,
with some runners making
huge gains and others simply
maintaining current race
results. However, with one
year under our belts and some
of the kinks worked out, we
are excited about the promises
for the upcoming year. The
kids are really starting to
understand that, to have a
great team, you must commit
to hard work and sacrifice.
I am extremely excited about
this year. We have had a
record number of kids sign up
this past spring and hopefully
most, if not all, will take on
the challenge.
Cross country is a sport that
challenges all participants to
make a big commitment to
themselves and the team.
will gel into a harmonious
and competitive group.
Leading the way for the
Lakers this year will be three
seniors who enter their 6th
year of competitive running.
The girls will be lead by
senior Lauren Jones. Lauren
has been more committed to
running than any girl we’ve
had. As a freshman, Lauren
had an outstanding year, but
the last two years have been
injury-plagued. However, she
has the desire and work ethic
to lead her team into a new
era of running for the Lakers.
She will have her work cut
out for her as only two other
runners return. Juniors
Catherine Standley and Elane
Bayless have both shown
steady improvement and will
have to help a very young
team fight through some
growing pains. Hopefully, this
trio and a slew of new runners
The boys return seniors
Ben Reimann and Oliver
Thompson. Ben garnered post
season All-District honors and
Oliver has been one of the
most improved runners each
year during high school.
I expect these two young men
to take over the reins and lead
the team by example through
hard work and consistent
training. In addition to the
seniors, the boys’ team will
have several other key runners
returning. Juniors Michael
McDonald, Lennon Ivey,
and Levi McDonald all have
varsity experience and are
expected to make an impact
this year. If the boys can stay
healthy and have had a great
off-season, they should reap
the rewards and improve upon
last year’s 49-18 mark as a
team.

After a difficult 2008
season, the Lady Laker
Tennis Team is on the
rebound. Buoyed by returning
letter winners Katie Burkhardt
and Sandra Shore, who played one
and two, and Kelli Montgomery
and Allison Sprenkle the number
three doubles team, the Lady
Lakers are ready to “Get Busy.”
The Lady Lakers will compete
for the six varsity spots lead by
seniors Cassie Bishop, Courtney
Cocks, Brittany Copeland, Paige
Rothove, and Kayla Shellabarger.
Juniors Krista Crockett, Kristen
Fritts, and Ashley Wolfe will also
put the pressure on to be in the
top six. The sophomore class, led
by Branda Bishop, Kaite Cocks,
Kristie Lotz, and Mackenzie
Manzer. The freshmen this year
are a sight to behold. Kaitlyn

formal instruction and will be

Not only have they been there for my golf
games, but they have also been the ones

criticism on every shot, putt, and drive.

assurance and faith. It is because of their

Excellence is Never an Accident!
Lady Laker Golf Team is coming off its
“Tmosthesuccessful
season with an 18 win and 2 loss
match season, a second place trophy at the MSU
Relays, a fourth place finish in the Ozark Conference
Tournament, a top half finish in our other two
tournaments and our best ever finish in the District
Tournament, taking third place. We were proud to
have Brooke Kelley and Joni Purvis represent our team
at the State tournament. Joni Purvis became our
program’s first ever All State Golfer as she placed
8th in the state at the State tournament. Our strong
match and tournament schedule and our returning
experienced players will help us continue to play
competitive golf. Providing experience and leadership
for our team will be All-Conference, All-District,
and All-State junior Joni Purvis, along with varsity
lettermen senior Jackie Faiferlick and juniors
Cassie Kennedy and Jessica Westerman. Returning
experienced junior varsity golfers and experienced
freshmen will also help us this year.
We will add the Capital City Classic
to our tournament schedule. We will
continue to practice and play at our
home course of Lake Valley Country
Club while playing some of our
matches at other area golf courses,”

Failure to comply with the Ozark Conference Sportsmanship Standards may result in your removal
from the site of competition and may result in further disciplinary action.
