President’s Report:
As I was preparing this report, I read a story that moved
me and which I want to share with you.
A member of the Western Oregon University softball
team, Sara Tucholsky hit the first home run of her career.
Sara took off running but in her excitement she failed
to step on first base. Quickly, she turned around to go
back but fell and seriously injured her knee and was
unable to get up. Rules prohibited her team mates from
helping her and without her running the bases, her team
would lose this critical game which would allow them to
advance to the conference play-offs.
Unbelievably, the first baseman and shortstop from the
opposing team, went to Sara, hoisted her in the air
and carried her around the bases to allow Sara to touch
each base with her left foot. Sara’s team went on to win
the game but more importantly, the crowd and team
members were able to see what good sportsmanship
and honor can achieve.
I consider myself fortunate to see the same spirit and
caring in all of the stakeholders who make “room at the
inn” for our mothers and children. Our volunteers and
donors who give of their time and financial resources
to keep our doors open and food on our table; our
professional staff who give so much of themselves to
helping the clients achieve “new lives of healthy, hopefilled independence”; and our clients themselves who
face the difficulties of their lives head on as they work to
build better futures for themselves and their babies. In
sports and in life, we are given so many opportunities to
“step up to the plate” and make a real difference in the
lives of others.
During the last year, Room At The Inn of the Carolinas,
Inc. has faced many challenges and difficulties. While
program information and program outcomes are
summarized throughout this report, I want to share with
you some of the accomplishments of the last year and
the vision we have for the future.

Z O. Albert Hodges, President / C.E.O
Accomplishments
Our Room At The Inn of the Lowcountry program
is off and running. After opening our doors in the
summer of 2007 to provide limited services, our license
was issued by the SC Department of Social Services in
April of 2008. This allowed us to expand our services to
full capacity. To recognize the generosity and hard work
of the Knights of Columbus in helping to make “Room At
The Inn”, the governing board voted to name the facility,
the Father Michael McGivney Maternity Home after
the founder of the Knights of Columbus. This facility
is the only residential maternity program in SC to
admit homeless, pregnant women with or without
previous children.
Our college program continues to grow. Through
a collaboration with the First Church of the Brethren in
Eden, NC, we are happy to expand our program to allow
graduates from our maternity home programs to pursue
their college education. This new facility, the Samaritan
House, along with the Backyard Ministry of the
Cherry Street United Methodist Church, continues
to increase our partnerships with faith communities.
With the Amy Elizabeth Disney House (a gift of
Francis and Patty Disney and the Greater Greensboro
Builders’ Association), we are able to provide long-term
supported community living services for our graduates
ROOM AT THE INN OF THE CAROLINAS / ANNUAL REPORT
and their children while they complete their educational programs.
Our agency is pursuing excellence through accreditation. In the
summer of 2004, our Governing Board of Directors voted to pursue
accreditation by the Council on Accreditation. In developing a five
year plan to achieve these goals, many internal improvements have
been implemented throughout our agency. These include: raising
educational requirements for all program staff positions; increasing
the organization’s commitment to stakeholder training and input;
annual review of risk management and internal controls; implementing
Performance and Quality Improvement processes throughout the
agency; and developing short-term and long-range planning. In May,
we conducted our first annual training weekend at which over 50 staff
and volunteers attended.
Challenges Ahead
We are working hard to develop and diversify our funding
base. The slowing economy of the last year has made operating our
programs a challenge. In addition to rising costs in service delivery and
a drop off in private charitable giving, we have seen the demand for
our programs grow as more and more homeless, pregnant women
and single mothers with children approach us for assistance. To meet
the need, administrative staff and volunteers have conducted a review
of costs and expenses that has already resulted in significant savings in
liability and property insurance and supply procurement. In addition,
we have developed a comprehensive development plan to expand
our revenue sources. This annual campaign will allow us to build on
our annual banquets by organizing smaller special events throughout
the geographical areas we serve. Increased approaches to foundations,
churches and businesses will round out our efforts to provide the
financial resources necessary to serve our mothers and children.
We are committed to strategic planning and the completion
of the accreditation process: After four years of preparation and
hard work, we have initiated the accreditation process that will take
approximately 14 - 18 months to complete. Committees to conduct
policy reviews, mock accreditation exercises, strategic planning and
risk management/internal control reviews have been developed.
Additional stakeholders including current and past clients, funders and
volunteers are being recruited to help with this project. We anticipate
further improvement in program delivery, agency efficiencies, and
client satisfaction to result from these transparent and comprehensive
processes.
As always, none of this would be possible without your continued
support and involvement. On behalf of the Governing Board of
Directors, our staff and volunteers and especially our clients, I want
to thank you for helping some of the most vulnerable of our society:
homeless, pregnant women and single mothers with children, “touch
all the bases” as they strive to build for themselves , “futures full of
hope”.
Sincerely,
O. Albert Hodges
