Notes from the classroom
Kindergarten
As the fall leaves are quickly changing, Kindergartners are quickly learning!
This month we are working on telling and writing stories that include the details of who, what,
and where. Please keep practicing your letter sounds. These sounds will really help us to read
and write words! Reading groups are focusing on voice print match and looking at the pictures
as a strategy to figure out unfamiliar words. We will also really grow if we practice our sight
words each night. In science, we are talking about animals and comparing. We will also be
talking about how to stay healthy, so please encourage hand washing and using a tissue. This
will help to keep us healthy so that we can go to school every day. Our math unit is all about
comparing amounts, counting larger numbers, and ordering the numbers. As the weather gets
colder there are a couple of items that really help us to be independent students, please practice
tying your shoes and make sure that you put names inside gloves, hats and jackets. Have a
happy October!
1st Grade
As we’re beginning to review progress for the end of first quarter, we are
beaming at the growth our first graders are making. Proficient students are now writing three or
more sentences in their draft books, writing sight words correctly, and their writing is becoming
easier to read. In math we finished up our unit entitled How Many of Each which covered
combining numbers to 20 and solving story problems. We have learned our routines for reading
stations, and we are becoming more independent during this work time so our teachers can
meet with reading groups. In social studies we have learned about neighborhoods, communities,
and maps. We are looking forward to parent teacher conferences right before fall break.
2nd Grade
In writing we have been working on narrative writing. We have worked hard on
understanding and using the writing process (plan, draft, revise, edit, publish) with each story
that we write. Students are also working on zooming in to tell lots of important details using
dialogue, feelings and sound words to make their writing more interesting. In math we have
been working two digit addition and subtraction story problems. In reading, the children have
been working hard on making inferences. Thinking about the clues the author gives and using
their own background knowledge helps them to figure out what the author didn’t state, but
wants them to know. Also we have been working on using multiple strategies to use when they
get stuck on a word they can’t read. Please ask your child about these strategies.
3rd Grade
Third grade students have been working diligently to establish routines and
procedures in all content areas. Math and Literacy Night in September was a great starting place
to build understandings for parents of what proficiency looks like in reading, writing and math.
Thank you to all who attended! As we end first quarter in the month of October, third grade
teachers look forward to sharing your child’s academic progress at fall conferences and continue
to build understandings of proficiency. We encourage families to set up a comfortable area in
their home that is free of distractions for their third grader to read and complete homework. We
appreciate all of your support.
4th Grade
The first quarter of the school year is quickly coming to a close. Fourth graders
have reviewed their multiplication facts and will be applying that knowledge to work with
increasingly larger multiplication problems. Please continue to practice the basic multiplication
facts at home to increase accuracy. When doing reading homework, have your student discuss
the characters of the story. What do they like? How do they act? Have they used this information
to predict a future event in the story? They can apply this knowledge to their writing of fiction in
October. A strong character is an important building part of creating a well developed fictional
story.
5th Grade As Fall arrives we are ready to move into the second quarter of our fifth grade
year. We are learning about colonization in Social Studies and will continue to grow our
understandings about how we became the United States of America. Reading finds us strongly
focused on summarizing fiction and nonfiction text. We will continue to work on writing
narrative text, but we will switch from writing personal narratives to writing fictional pieces.
Our young mathematicians have been challenged to solve subtraction problems using a variety
of strategies. We will soon be transitioning into our key unit on fractions. Students who know
their basic multiplication facts will find it easier to transfer their knowledge of whole numbers
into numbers less than one. We will be training our young entrepreneurs to run the school store
in order to get that up and running by the end of October.
Diverse Learning Center – Ms. Jennifer Nelson and Mrs. Angela Hernandez
The theme for this month is Look Up in the Sky! This unit is focused around Earth and Space
Science. We will develop a basic understanding of the Sun, Moon, and Stars in relation to
day/night, seasons, and weather. We will continue to build on our previous unit that focused on
things that are the same and different. In reading we are working on letter identification,
phonics sounds, matching, and pre-reading skills. We are also working on matching peer and
adult written names to their correct pictures. In writing we are working on letters and personal
information such as name and phone number. In math we will continue practice with number
recognition, number sense, on one to one correspondence, geometric shapes, and time.
Music Notes
Mrs. Gonzalez, Music Specialist
 5th grade students will be performing a grade level music program on Thursday, November 14th,
2013, at 6:30 p.m. in the gymnasium at Vassar Elementary School. The title of their performance is
“We Haz Jazz!” Students will be learning about the history of jazz music and learning about important
musicians who were instrumental (pun intended) in the development of this American music style.
 3rd grade students will be performing a grade level music program on Thursday, November 21st,
2013, at 6:30 p.m. in the gymnasium at Vassar Elementary School. The title of their performance is
“Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People’s Ears.” Students will be learning about music and important cultural
traditions from the African continent.
 The deadline for recorder orders for 4th grade students has passed. The orders have been
placed, and we are simply waiting (with great anticipation) for their arrival. I expect them to be here
in time for the beginning of 2nd quarter, when the 4th grade students will start their recorder unit of
study. The main expectation for students is that they learn to read and perform from printed music
just like professionally trained musicians do! We’ll be accomplishing this at a 4 th grade level, but
students will be well-prepared to learn to play a band or orchestra instrument when they get to
middle school.
Physical Education
Mr. Chapla, Physical Education Teacher
Vassar students are doing great things in PE so far this year. The 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade
classes have been doing a great job learning their new warm-up (crossfit). We have been
focusing on cardiovascular endurance, flexibility, muscular strength and body composition.
Students will soon be setting personal goals in these areas, and will eventually be creating
personal fitness goals and coming up with exercises that will help them reach their goals.. I
encourage all parents to discuss these goals and to help support your child/children attain their
goals by allowing them at least 45 minutes of physical activity every day. We have also been
learning about the importance of teamwork, collaboration, and fair play with several team
building activities. Some of the Health content that we are covering this month will revolve
around the affects of tobacco and 2nd hand smoke. We are moving towards a basketball and
hockey units to improve hand/eye coordination.
The Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade students have been focusing on different types of
movements (walking, jogging, skipping, galloping, hopping, sliding) etc. We are also working on
catching / throwing. We have been working on three types of throwing which include overhand
(footballs, whiffle balls), underhand (beanbags) and rolling (bowling).We will begin working on
catching in the next few weeks. I encourage all parents to have your child/children show you
these movements and different types of throwing to help re-enforce what we are doing at
school.
Art News
Mrs. Johnson
All grade levels are working with tempera paint over the next few weeks. They will use a variety
of tools and techniques to apply their paint. Kindergarten is learning about paintings created by
Georgia O’Keeffe, an artist from the United States, and will be painting flowers. First grade
looked at a painting, Abacus Sliding, by Sam Gilliam, who grew up in Mississippi, and is learning
to paint with sponges to create a mood. Second grade is creating masks from paper plates and
paint after viewing Four-faced Hamat’sa Mask by George Walkus. Walkus was a member of the
Kwakwaka’wakw Indian Tribe from Northern Vancouver Island and British Columbia. Third grade
is learning about Impressionism and Claude Monet’s painting, The Water Lily Pond. They will try
some of the brush techniques that Monet used. Fourth grade will be painting a landscape that
includes a foreground, middle-ground, and background. They have viewed the landscape
painting, Wind River Country, by Albert Bierstadt who immigrated from Germany to the United
States in 1833. Fifth grade studied the painting, Hopi Eagle Dancer, by Dan Namingha who is a
member of the Hopi Tribe and was born in Arizona. Fifth graders used the descriptive method,
formal analysis method, and reflection method to write about and recreate Namingha’s painting.
They will create their own paintings using a variety of tools to apply the paint.
Talking with Your Child’s Teacher
We always welcome ongoing communication/visits and a positive relationship with parents. We
know that your days are busy and our days are very busy too and unfortunately we don’t always
have the time before school to meet with parents when you drop in unexpectedly. Setting up an
appointment ahead of time, sending an e-mail, or leaving a voicemail message is always
recommended before dropping by the school. These steps will help us set up a time to visit with
you and will ensure that we can dedicate our time to your visit. Our goal is to be respectful of
your time with us. Thank you for your dedication to your child’s education.

The PTO would like to thank everyone who participated in our fall fundraiser, it was a big
success. The money raised will be used for many different activities throughout the year
such as field trips, classroom parties and even a holiday dance.

Dear Parents and Families,
The UC Denver Teacher Candidates would like to announce that we recently held a school-wide assembly
hosted by the Denver Zoo which provided our students with the unique opportunity to learn about different animal
behaviors and adaptations. A Bearded Dragon, a Malaysian Box Turtle, and a Leaf-Nosed Rat Snake were among
some of the exotic animals that were brought. This was a wonderful learning experience for all of our students at
Vassar and we hope that everyone enjoyed the animals!
In order to make this assembly become a reality, we wrote a grant and earned a scholarship of 450 dollars that
we were able to apply to the cost of our zoo assembly. Our new PTO also generously made a donation to support the
costs of the assembly that were not covered by the grant. We are so pleased that we were able to bring the Denver
Zoo to Vassar and hope that this was a very positive, memorable learning experience for your child.

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS)
Vassar students continue to SOAR
Vassar’s PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Support) program is off and running. At the
end of last month we had our kickoff assemblies where students were recognized for positive
behavior around the school. All of the students in attendance demonstrated great assembly
behavior and were very attentive and respectful throughout. This month we are continuing to
focus on teaching the behavioral expectations that we want to see from our students. When
students are spotted meeting these expectations they are given a SOAR ticket and entered into a
prize drawing.

Kinder
Como las hojas de otoño están cambiando rápidamente, kinder están aprendiendo
rápidamente! Este mes estamos trabajando en contar y escribir historias que incluyen los detalles de
quién, qué y dónde. Por favor, sigan practicando los sonidos de las letras. Estos sonidos realmente nos
ayudan a leer y escribir palabras! Los Grupos de lectura se están centrando en la impresión de la voz y
mirar las imágenes como una estrategia para entender palabras desconocidas. También vamos a crecer si
realmente ponemos en práctica nuestras palabras comunes cada noche. En ciencia, estamos hablando de
animales y comparaciones. También vamos a estar hablando de cómo mantenerse saludable, así que por
favor fomente el lavado de manos y el uso de un pañuelo de papel. Esto ayudará a mantenernos sanos,

1er grado
Como estamos empezando a examinar los progresos realizados a el final del primer
trimestre, estamos transmitiendo el crecimiento de los niños de primer grado. Los estudiantes con
fluencia ahora están escribiendo tres o más oraciones en sus proyectos de libros, escribiendo palabras
usuales correctamente, y su escritura es cada vez más fácil de leer. En matemáticas terminamos nuestra
unidad titulada cuentas de cada uno que abarca la combinación de los números hasta 20 y la resolución
de problemas de historia. Hemos aprendido nuestras rutinas para leer estaciones, y estamos cada vez
más independientes durante este tiempo de trabajo para que nuestros maestros puedan reunirse con
grupos de lectura. En estudios sociales, hemos aprendido acerca de los barrios, las comunidades, y los
mapas. Estamos preparándonos para las conferencias de padres y maestros justo antes de las vacaciones
de otoño.
2 º grado En la escritura estamos trabajando en la escritura narrativa. Hemos trabajado mucho en la
comprensión y el uso del proceso de escritura (planificar, borrador, revisar, editar, publicar) con cada
historia que escribimos. Los estudiantes también están trabajando en decir un montón de detalles
importantes que utilizan en el diálogo, sentimientos y palabras de sonido para hacer su escritura más
interesante. En matemáticas hemos estado trabajando en sumas de dos dígitos y problemas restas de la
historia. En lectura, los niños han estado trabajando duro en deducciones. Pensando en las pistas que el
autor da y el uso de sus propios conocimientos ayuda a ellos para averiguar lo que el autor no afirmó,
pero que quiere que ellos sepan. También hemos estado trabajando en el uso de múltiples estrategias
para utilizar cuando se atascan en una palabra que no saben leer. Pregunte a su hijo sobre estas
estrategias.
3er grado Los
estudiantes de tercer grado han estado trabajando diligentemente para establecer
rutinas y procedimientos en todas las áreas de contenido. La noche de Matemáticas y de Literatura en
septiembre fue un gran punto de partida para construir la comprensión de los padres del nivel de
dominio en lectura, escritura y matemáticas. ¡Gracias a todos los que asistieron! Al terminar el primer

4 º grado El
primer trimestre del año escolar está llegando rápidamente a su fin. cuarto grado ha
revisado sus tablas de multiplicación y aplica ese conocimiento para trabajar con problemas de
multiplicación cada vez más grandes. Por favor continúe practicando las operaciones básicas de
multiplicación para aumentar la precisión. Al hacer la tarea de lectura, haga que su estudiante discuta los
personajes de la historia. ¿Qué le gusta? ¿Cómo actúan? ¿Han utilizado esta información para predecir un
evento futuro en la historia? Se puede aplicar este conocimiento a su escritura de ficción en octubre. Un
carácter fuerte es una parte importante para la creación de una historia de ficción bien desarrollada.
5 º grado Conforme llega el otoño estamos listos para entrar en el segundo trimestre de nuestro año
de quinto grado. Estamos aprendiendo sobre la colonización en Estudios Sociales y seguiremos
aumentando nuestro entendimiento acerca de cómo nos convertimos en los Estados Unidos de América.
En La lectura nos centramos en gran medida de en el resumen de el texto de ficción y no ficción. Vamos
a seguir trabajando en la escritura de textos narrativos, pero vamos a pasar de escribir narraciones
personales para escribir piezas de ficción. Nuestros jóvenes matemáticos han sido desafiados a resolver
problemas de resta usando una variedad de estrategias. Pronto estaremos en transición hacia nuestra
unidad clave en fracciones. Los estudiantes que saben que sus operaciones básicas de multiplicación será
más fácil de transferir su conocimiento de los números enteros en números menores que uno. Estaremos
entrenando a nuestros pequeños empresarios para iniciar la tienda de la escuela con el fin de conseguir

matemáticas vamos a seguir la práctica con el reconocimiento de números, sentido del número, en

 Estudiantes de quinto grado presentarán un programa de música de nivel de grado el jueves, 14 de
noviembre de 2013 a las 6:30 pm en el gimnasio de la Escuela Primaria Vassar. El título de su
actuación es "Nosotros Haz Jazz!" Los estudiantes van a aprender acerca de la historia de la música
jazz y de importantes músicos que fueron instrumentales (nunca mejor dicho) en el desarrollo de este
estilo de la música americana.
 Estudiantes de 3er grado presentarán un programa de música de nivel de grado el jueves, 21 de
noviembre de 2013 a las 6:30 pm en el gimnasio de la Escuela Primaria Vassar. El título de su
actuación es "¿Por qué los mosquitos zumban en los oídos de la gente." Los estudiantes aprenderán
acerca de la música y de importantes tradiciones culturales del continente africano.
 La fecha límite para las órdenes de las grabadoras para estudiantes de cuarto grado ha pasado. Los
pedidos se han colocado, y simplemente estamos esperando (con gran anticipación) para su llegada.
Espero lleguen a tiempo para el inicio del segundo trimestre, cuando los estudiantes de cuarto grado
comenzarán su unidad de grabación de estudio. La expectativa principal es que los estudiantes
aprendan a leer y realizar música impresa igual como los músicos entrenados lo hacen! Vamos a
lograr esto a un nivel de 4 º grado, pero los estudiantes estarán bien preparados para aprender a
tocar un instrumento de banda o la orquesta cuando llegan a la escuela secundaria.
Educación física
Mr. Chapla, Physical Education Teacher
Los Estudiantes de Vassar están haciendo grandes cosas en PE en lo que va del año. Las clases de
tercero, cuarto y quinto grado han estado haciendo un gran trabajo aprendiendo su nuevo calentamiento
(crossfit). Nos hemos centrado en la resistencia cardiovascular, flexibilidad, fuerza muscular y la
composición corporal. Los estudiantes pronto estarán fijándose metas personales en estas áreas, y con el
tiempo se crearan objetivos personales y haran ejercicios que les ayudarán a alcanzar sus metas .. Animo
a todos los padres para discutir estas metas y para ayudar a apoyar a su hijo / hijos a alcanzar sus
objetivos al permitirles al menos 45 minutos de actividad física todos los días. También hemos estado
aprendiendo acerca de la importancia del trabajo en equipo, la colaboración y el juego limpio, con varias
actividades de team building. Algunos de los contenidos de la Salud que estamos cubriendo este mes
girará en torno a los efectos del tabaco y el humo de segunda mano. Vamos hacia las unidades de una
pelota de baloncesto y hockey para mejorar coordinación de la mano / ojo.
El Kindergarten, 1 º y 2 º grado se han centrado en diferentes tipos de movimientos (caminar, correr,
saltar, galopar, saltar, deslizarse), etc. También estamos trabajando en la captura / lanzar. Hemos estado
trabajando en tres tipos de lanzamiento que incluyen pronación (balones, pelotas de botar), bajo cuerda
(bolsitas) y balanceo (bolos). Vamos a empezar a trabajar en atrapar en las próximas semanas. Animo a

Todos los grados están trabajando con pintura al temple en las próximas semanas. Ellos usarán una
variedad de herramientas y técnicas para aplicar su pintura. Kindergarten está aprendiendo acerca de
pinturas creadas por Georgia O'Keeffe, un artista de los Estados Unidos, que pintaba flores. Primer
grado miró el cuadro, Abacus Deslizar, por Sam Gilliam, quien creció en Mississippi, y está aprendiendo
a pintar con esponjas para crear un estado de ánimo. El segundo grado está en la creación de máscaras
de platos de papel y la pintura después de ver cuatro Máscaras Hamat'sa por George Walkus. Walkus
era un miembro de la tribu Kwakwaka'wakw en el norte de la india de la isla de Vancouver y Columbia
Británica. Tercer grado está aprendiendo sobre el impresionismo y la pintura de Claude Monet, El

PTO – Organización de maestros y padres
El PTO quiere agradecer a todos los que participaron en nuestra recaudación de fondos de otoño, que fue
un gran éxito. El dinero recaudado será utilizado para muchas actividades diferentes a lo largo del año,
tales como excursiones, fiestas en el aula e incluso un baile.
Nuestro próximo PTO encuentro es el 12 de noviembre a las 6:30 pm en la cafetería, y esperamos contar
con tu presencia.

inesperada. programar una cita con anticipación, enviando un e-mail o dejar un mensaje de voz siempre
es recomendable antes de venir a la escuela. Estos pasos le ayudarán a establecer una cita para hablar
con usted y se asegurará de que podamos dedicar nuestro tiempo a su visita. Nuestro objetivo es ser

Estimados Padres y Familias,
Los candidates de denver a maestros de UC les gustaría anunciar que hemos celebrado recientemente una
asamblea de toda la escuela organizada por el Zoológico de Denver, que proporciona a nuestros estudiantes la
oportunidad única de aprender sobre los diferentes comportamientos de los animales y las adaptaciones. Un dragón
barbudo, una tortuga de caja malaya y una serpiente de rata Hoja de nariz fueron algunos de los animales exóticos
que se mostraron. Esta fue una maravillosa experiencia de aprendizaje para todos nuestros estudiantes de Vassar y
todo el mundo disfrutó de los animales!
A fin de que esta asamblea se convierta en realidad, escribimos una beca y se obtuvo una beca de 450
dólares que hemos sido capaces de aplicar al costo de nuestra asamblea del zoo. Nuestro nuevo PTO también
generosamente hizo una donación para apoyar los costos de la asamblea que no estaban cubiertos por la
subvención. Estamos muy contentos de que hemos sido capaces de llevar el Zoológico de Denver a la Escuela
Primaria Vassar y esperamos que esta halla sido una experiencia de aprendizaje muy positiva, memorable para su
hijo.
