At the commencement of the year, the Board confirmed the strategic objectives for 2014 based on the key themes of consolidation and growth. Our major focus areas for 2014 were: • Developing a culture of customer service and improving our reputation with clubs and members • Continuing to run high quality gymnastics events • Increasing the number of judges and coaches by providing more education courses of higher quality • Acting as a model organisation for inclusion and influencing more clubs to become more inclusive • Supporting our own High Performance Centre and other high performance clubs to excel at local, national and international events • Improving our financial performance and growing our financial reserves. I am very pleased to report that most of our objectives were achieved. In terms of highlights, the Annual Club Satisfaction Survey showed a significant increase in the satisfaction of clubs with GV and this was a key factor in supporting membership growth of almost 7% during 2014, including a strong increase in the number of clubs wanting to affiliate with GV. Our financial reserves also improved significantly in 2014 due to a considerable surplus which was largely attributable to a strong focus on cost management from the executive team. This enabled GV to keep 2015 member affiliation fees at the same level as 2014. 10 The past year saw several changes at Board level. I was very privileged to be elected as Chair of the Board in early 2014 as part of a succession plan to enable Julie Sarll, our long running President, to step down from the Board later in the year (October). Julie’s role on the Board was filled by Skev Seremetis, who comes to us with a strong commercial background in marketing and sales leadership. Nick Thornton, another long standing Board Member and previous Chair of the Finance Committee, also stepped down in 2014, to be replaced by Anthony Johnston. Anthony brings a wealth of finance and risk experience from a diverse executive background and has taken on the role of Chair of the newly formed Finance & Risk Committee. Sarah Reid did not seek reelection to the Board at the 2014 AGM and was replaced by Alistair Edgar, who is well known to the gymnastics community and has a wealth of experience across gymnastics administration, club management and high performance. Thanks also to Sarah for her great contribution to the Board. Our three new Board Members are already making a strong contribution and I look forward to their ongoing involvement in the years to come. On behalf of the Board and the gymnastics community I would like to extend a special thanks to Julie Sarll and Nick Thornton for their contribution to GV. Both Julie and Nick provided great leadership to the Board and to the organisation for 10 years and 7 years respectively. Our organisation is better for having their dedicated involvement and we are extremely indebted for their contribution. During 2014, the Board undertook its first Board evaluation, undertaken independently by the Australian Sports Commission. This evaluation reflected favourably on GV relative Gymnastics Victoria Annual Report 2014 CHAIR’S REPORT (Continued) to similar sporting organisations and also provided the Board with a few key areas of focus for 2015 including development of our risk framework, improvement in policy documentation and succession planning for the GV CEO and key staff. In conclusion, it is clear that gymnastics is thriving in Victoria and I would like to thank our clubs, gymnasts, coaches, judges, volunteers, parents, sponsors and partners who enable the sport to continue growing. Special thanks must go to the Board who are a talented and dedicated group and who provide great support to GV CEO Jamie Parsons and to myself as Board Chair. Finally, thanks to Jamie and the GV staff who have made 2014 a great success and who continue to strive for excellence in everything they do. Roll on 2015! 11 LIFE MEMBERS Patron: Murray Chessell Life Members Mr James E Barry AM MBE Mrs Val Beitzel (dec) Miss Joan Caelli (dec) Mrs Lee Caelli AM (dec) Mr J Carey (dec) Mrs M Carey Mrs Helen Chamberlain Mrs Barbara Cunningham Dr W D Curtis (dec) Mr R J Curtis (dec) Mr Gordon Draper Mrs Joan Duquemin Mr A Frank (dec) Mr Graeme Heath (dec) Mr John Higgins Mr Jim Jack Mr Michael Johnson * Dr Don McIntosh Mrs Toni Myers Mr Andrew Newman Morris * Mrs Sally Newman Morris * Ms Emaleigh Nimmervoll * Mrs Shirley Reid 12 Mr Ralf Schenk * Mrs Jan Smart Mrs Carole Sussman (dec) A/Prof Geoff Sussman OAM Mr George Tatai Ms Lisa Taylor * Mr Phil Teare Mr Adrian Wareham * Mr David Wareham * Mrs Marion Wareham * Mrs Jill Wright * denotes Trampoline Sports Gymnastics Victoria Annual Report 2014 CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER REPORT CEO, Jamie Parsons Our mission ‘to promote, develop and grow gymnastics in an inclusive fulfilling and safe environment’ continues to provide the focus for GV and drives us to provide world class services to our members. Gymnastics in Victoria continues to grow and is outstripping almost every other major participation sport in Victoria for growth in registered participants. This a great testament to the people involved in gymnastics including gymnasts, their families, club committees, owners, coaches, judges, volunteers, Technical Committees. Strategic plan At the commencement of 2014 the GV Board set the 2014-2016 Strategic Plan. A change in staffing structure to align with the strategic objectives was finalised. Almost all targets were reached or exceeded. The following chart provides some of the key objectives achieved: 2014 OBJECTIVE Engage and Enthuse Increase Participation Numbers 2014 KPI 2014 OUTCOME 7% Communicate with Clubs 50% 6.71% 100% clubs communicated with 600 club visits (up from 80 + club visits in 2013) Enable Develop a marketing campaign to promote the Gymsport pathway Increase the number of qualified coaches Increase the number of qualified judges Excel Identify additional income models Increase number of Victorians in national teams for MAG and WAG Endure 50% of clubs use campaign 82% of clubs distributed pathway 5% 21% 5% 7% 5% increase 250%+ increase 30% 70% Develop a club support program 25% uptake Examine alternate membership models Participate in GA review Ensure financial reserves $50,000 increase 88.5% satisfaction rating (up from 62.5% in 2013) 20 clubs so far undertaken plan 8 new clubs in 2014 Review continuing 0% member fee increase in 2015 A more commercial approach $200,000+ achieved 13 CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER REPORT CEO, Jamie Parsons (Continued) At the end of 2014, the Board reviewed the current strategic plan and re-set the objectives for 2015-16 that are currently available on the GV website. A customer service focussed organisation In 2014, GV significantly increased service delivery to members and did so with reduced membership fees, a new staffing structure, and with the aim of delivering world’s best services for our members. This customer service focus will continue to strengthen into the future. Clubs Clubs are the backbone of gymnastics in Victoria. Each has its own culture, ethos and approach. With a mix of 8 gymsports and varying governance structures, each club provides a wonderful program of gymnastics in their communities. Eight new clubs joined GV (with another 9 in 2015). Our ability to compete for family time against other sports and activities has never been more important as our ongoing growth is showing we are doing it better than almost every other major sport. Board, Technical Committees and Working Groups The GV Board, Technical Committees and other Working Groups have generously volunteered their time and experience to assist the organisation and we would not be able to achieve what we do without their guidance and passion. As an organisation we are extremely fortunate to have the level of professional skills and experience that we currently enjoy on our Board and Committees. 14 The Technical Directors and Technical Committees continue to do an outstanding job. The time, effort and passion of these people can not be underestimated. I look forward to continuing to work with them. Partners GV extended our list of partners. Our partners are a critically important part of the success of gymnastics in Victoria. We would like to thank VicHealth, State Government of Victoria, Melbourne Polytechnic, Swinburne University, GK, Chalk and Gymnastics Australia who were all very important to GV continuing to develop as an organisation. GV and our affiliated clubs have been recognised for their hard work and commitment to competitive gymnastics, increasing participation and creating welcoming and inclusive clubs and environments for everyone in the community. In 2014, GV was recognised as a leader in sport development by winning the 2014 Victorian Sport Award (Best Sports Development Initiative by an Affiliated Vicsport Member) and the 2014 Disability Sport and Recreation (Inclusive Initiative of the Year) Award for the Inclusive Club Guidelines. Gymnastics clubs in Victoria won a number of awards this year, such as Maffra Gymnastics Club winning the 2014 VicHealth Award in the category of ‘Building Health through Sport’. We would also like to thank the Victorian Institute of Sport, Janssen & Fritsen (AMCO), Think, 2XU, 3rd Level Consulting, The Gymnastics Foundation and HR Plus for their ongoing support. At the start of 2015 we welcomed two new sponsors to GV – EziDebit and our official GV Hotel Park Regis and we look forward to our ongoing relationship. Gymnastics Victoria Annual Report 2014 Financial The financial outcome in 2014 was very pleasing and testament to the changes in the organisation and the high calibre of our staffing team. After a significant loss in 2013 we were able to turn that around with a strong emphasis on financial control and expanding and diversifying our revenue generating activities. GV appointed Deloitte Australia as our new auditors in 2015. Their professionalism and thorough approach has assisted us to strengthen our financial system for the future. Government support continues to grow, our commercial capability is strengthening and with increasing financial reserves we have the foundation for an organisation that reduces its reliance on traditional membership registration fees. By the end of 2015, we will have seen a significant reduction in average participant fees per member. At the same time our organisational reserves will have grown. Finally thank you to our passionate and wonderful staff whose commitment and passion for gymnastics has been outstanding. Our senior management team in 2014 of Jacqui Godfrey, Alison Lyons, Brad Edwards and Greg Corsiglia all contributed an enormous amount during the year and provided the leadership to ensure a successful 2014. In 2015, we also welcomed Alan MacKinnon, Finance and Administration Manager, who has already proved to be an invaluable resource to our sport. I am looking forward to the future and Gymnastics in Victoria continuing to grow. Thank you Thank you to everyone who has contributed to GV in 2014. We look forward to continuing to serve our more than 40,000 members and 110 clubs. A special thank you to the GV Board whose guidance and support has been invaluable to the development of Gymnastics in Victoria and in particular, Michael O’Neill who as the Board Chair provides outstanding leadership for our sport. 15 FINANCE REPORT Anthony Johnston Following a year of significant organisational change in 2013, the past year has been one of consolidation for GV. In our Finance Report last year we advised that the various changes undertaken during the year had strengthened GV despite the deficit recorded for the year. I am pleased to report that GV has returned to a stronger financial performance in 2014, recording a surplus of $244,239, compared to a deficit of $138,961 in 2013. The excellent result was generated through a solid increase in revenue and a strong focus on cost management. Notwithstanding the excellent financial performance in 2014, when comparing the result with 2013 it should be remembered that the 2013 result was negatively impacted by a number of one off costs. While the revenue growth of 3.8% was pleasing in a challenging environment, of greater significance was the work commenced in 2013 and continued in 2014 to diversify GV’s income streams and reduce reliance on membership fees. While membership numbers increased strongly in 2014, fees in real terms have reduced per member over the past two years, resulting in relatively flat membership fee income in 2014. During the year there was a re-orienting of income streams to Events (a reflection of an increase in gymnasts at GV events) and Workforce Development. With the implementation of the new coaching framework during 2013, additional coaching courses were implemented in 2014, resulting in an increase in course income. In addition, GV’s focus on continuing to strengthen its relationships with Government and nonGovernment partners resulted in an increase in funding from Government sources. 16 In the Finance Report last year we commented that deficit outcomes are not sustainable and outlined the Board’s commitment to building the financial reserves of GV. It is therefore pleasing to report a 6.9% reduction in expenditure in 2014. Management should be congratulated on its strong cost management focus while still being able to deliver enhanced services to our members. In 2014 GV realigned its organisational structure to better match the needs of the gymnastics community and following a restructure early in 2014 there were staff savings across a number of areas of the organisation. Other operational cost savings over the year included event delivery, office expenses and information technology. While cost management will continue to be a focus, it is not expected the magnitude of cost savings achieved in 2014 will be repeated in 2015. It is pleasing that the stronger 2014 performance has enabled the Board to provide a tangible benefit to our members through a zero increase in 2015 membership fees. Through the vastly improved financial performance in 2014 GV has been able to rebuild its equity position from $222,092 to $466,331, going some way to restoring appropriate reserves in line with industry practice and providing GV with enhanced flexibility for future investment in commercial activities. It is expected the equity position will improve further in financial year 2015 as a solid surplus has been budgeted, although it is not expected the surplus level of 2014 will be replicated. While GV’s cash position at the end of the financial year was very healthy, the year end number of $821,474 needs to be considered in light of substantial trade payments made in the first week of the 2015 financial year. Gymnastics Victoria Annual Report 2014 In addition to the good surplus result and strengthened financial position, there were a number of other notable achievements in the finance area during 2014. These included: • The appointment of new auditors (Deloitte) whose vast experience with sporting and not-for-profit organisations has already been of benefit to GV. • Enhanced management reporting providing more timely and informed financial reports for management, the Finance and Risk Committee and the Board. • Strengthened accounting practices and treatments following a review initiated by the Finance & Risk Committee. Further strengthening the organisation’s internal controls will continue to be a focus of the Committee in 2015 to ensure industry best practice is attained and maintained. • The introduction of greater financial expertise and experience within GV’s management team. With these and other finance initiatives in 2014, GV’s finance function has now lifted to a new level of professionalism. Given the amount of work required and undertaken in the finance function during the year, we were unable to achieve all of the risk management goals set by the Committee in 2014. Governing the risk of the organisation will be a clear focus in 2015. Finally, I would like to thank our CEO, Jamie Parsons, and the Head Office team for their dedicated work throughout the year. Their day-to-day management of the finances and support of the Committee was a key factor in the strong finance performance in 2014. I would also like to thank Committee members Tanya Johansen, David Hill and Michael O’Neill for their support, hard work and strong guidance to management. 17 MEN’S GYMNASTICS Paul Thanas, Technical Director International Representatives Senior International In 2014, a number of Men’s Artistic Gymnastics (MAG) gymnasts represented Australia on the international stage. All of these gymnasts train at the Victorian Men’s High Performance Centre (VMHPC) and competed across three key events. These were: • 2014 Pacific Rim Gymnastics Championships (Canada): Jayden Bull and Luke Wiwatowski • 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games (Scotland): Jack Rickards, Luke Wadsworth, Sean O’Hara and Kent Pieterse • 45th FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships (China): Sean O’Hara, Luke Wadsworth and Luke Wiwatowski While the gymnasts didn’t qualify for finals across the three events, the gymnasts should be congratulated on their professionalism and competitive spirit. • Team Final, 1st place: Jayden Bull, Luke Wiwatowski, Sean O’Hara, Luke Wadsworth and Jack Rickards • Team Final, 3rd place: Caelan Bacon, Lachlan Fitzgerald, Julian Caser and Jimmy Macarios • Floor Individual Apparatus Final: Jayden Bull (2nd place), Kent Pieterse (3rd place) • Vault Individual Apparatus Final: Kent Pieterse (3rd place) • Parallel Bars Individual Apparatus Final: Luke Wadsworth (3rd place) • High Bar Individual Apparatus Final: Luke Wadsworth (3rd place) Australian Gymnastics Championships The Victorian Men’s Gymnastics Team performed very well at the 2014 Australian Gymnastics Championships and some excellent results were achieved, with a large number of gymnasts making Olympic and National Squads as a result of their performance. Senior Men’s Team again won this division showing the strength Victoria has in the Senior division with being able to provide two senior teams for this division. The State Team finished 2nd overall in the Cheales-Williamson Shield competition, which is the same result as the competition held in 2012 and 2013. An impressive 52 gymnasts from 7 Victorian clubs represented the state at the competition, so it was an impressive display and result for Men’s Gymnastics. Some of the key results are outlined below. 18 Level 9 Open Team Final, 3rd place: Jace Knights, Anthony Dorrington and Jaze Dubois Level 8 Under Team Final, 2nd place: Ruben Chitters, Heath Thorpe, Hudson Irwin and Billy Mclean Hudson Irwin: All Around (3rd place), Parallel Bars (3rd place) and High Bar (3rd place) State Squads The State Squad format continues to evolve from season to season. It is expected that the change in State Levels will aid the development of gymnasts striving to move from State Team selection to National Team selection. Gymnastics Victoria Annual Report 2014 MEN’S GYMNASTICS Paul Thanas, Technical Director (Continued) Tech Committee Awards Luke Wadsworth received the 2014 Technical Committee Senior Athlete of the Year award and the GV Victorian Male Gymnast of the Year award. This was very well received as were the awards voted by the WAG community presented on the day. The Technical Assembly followed. The 2014 Combined Victorian Championships was held at the State Netball & Hockey Centre. Again the event was very successful although there were some very long days put in by some judges and coaches and I thank them for their tireless contribution to our sport. State Pennant this year was held with each level being held at the one venue and not divided geographically. There was also 2 regional events where teams could qualify as the “wild card” entry to the State Pennant finals which were held in August, with the top 6 teams from the Metro event and the 2 wild card teams competing at each level. The 2014 Women’s Gymnastics Victorian Championships for National Level 4 and 5 and State Level 6 - 10 were held with team events in October and finals in November at The Arena in Geelong alongside the Gymnastics Australia National Clubs Championship. I would like to thank the GV Board, CEO and GV staff for their work throughout the year and in particular the events team who have worked hard with the WAG Technical Committee (TC) to produce high quality events. I would also like to thank the members of the WAG TC for their tireless work over the past year to improve and promote Women’s Gymnastics in Victoria. Sue Cowdell – WAG Judging Coordinator Glenn Evans – WAG Coaching Coordinator Stacey Weston – Secretary Helen Chamberlain – Events Coordinator Gordon Draper – General member (coaching) Rachel Barton – General Member (calendar) Simone Greig - General Member Tracy Hortin - General Member (leotards) The 2014 Family Ball & Awards Night was a wonderful event in early 2015, which showcased all the Gymsports and a terrific night. We look forward to 2015 and the highlights and challenges it will bring. One which I am sure will again showcase Women’s Gymnastics in Victoria. Macy Pegoli from the Victorian Women’s High Performance Centre in Prahran, Victoria. 21 RHYTHMIC GYMNASTICS Sharyn Kemp, Technical Director Rhythmic Gymnastics in Victoria experienced a varied year in 2014. In January, 2 elite Rhythmic Gymnastics (RG) gymnasts and one coach were selected as part of the Australian team competing at the 2014 Pacific Rim Gymnastics Championships. Although no medals were won, the girls could be very proud of their results. Unfortunately we did not achieve the results we wished at the 2014 Australian Gymnastics Championships overall although we still had some good results. Junior International gymnast Ying Cui Chan finished in 2nd place in the Ribbon Apparatus while Level 8 Junior gymnast Alexandra Kiroi placed in the Hoop Apparatus (3rd place), Club Apparatus (2nd place), Ribbon Apparatus (2nd place) and All Around (2nd place). Level 9 Junior Silvia Valente gained our only Gold medal in Ribbon, and also placed All Around (3rd place). In 2014, progress was being made in the education space with all coaches and judges courses rolled out with course dates and times being confirmed. Unfortunately, FIG released some major changes to the RG Code of Points, and as a result Gymnastics Australia (GA) put all courses on hold until they are reviewed. Luckily 22 we managed to re-accredit all our Judges for the new cycle before the courses were put on hold but look forward to advancing the accreditation levels once the new courses are available. With the introduction of the RG Foundation Level, many enthusiastic coaches and parents have attended the Beginners Judging Course. This has increased our Beginner Judges numbers by 25%. We only managed to hold one Intermediate Coaching Course before the halt and we have a large number of coaches ready to advance to higher levels as soon as possible. We have also had many older gymnasts at several Beginner Coaching Courses and they are now all active in their clubs. The number of gymnasts competing in all levels, but especially the lower levels has increased and this means that several of our competitions that were previously held on one day now need to be held over two days instead. We are also retaining the majority of our gymnasts moving into Level 7 and above. RG has also included Aesthetic Group Gymnastics (AGG), which is similar to Group routines but without apparatus. It is very early days yet but several Victorian clubs have begun incorporating AGG into their classes. This could also be a viable extension for gymnasts from other disciplines who would still love to compete but are disadvantaged by age, size or lack of training time. I would like to thank the RG TC members for all their hard work, and Jamie and all the staff at GV for all their assistance in my first year as Technical Director. And of course, Clare Hanlon, our Board member, who has shown so much interest in our sport and has so ably assisted in prioritising our aims and goals in our Strategic Plan. Gymnastics Victoria Annual Report 2014 AEROBIC GYMNASTICS Vicky Henty, Technical Director Aerobic Gymnastics (AG) has continued to develop and evolve with a focus on participation at entry level and excellence at elite level. Victoria is fortunate to now have members on the AG National Commission and so have the opportunity to shape and direct the sport’s development. AG in Victoria has had another successful year of events with 3 Club invitational events, 2 State Team trials and a 3 day State Championships at the State Hockey & Netball Centre, which included the 2014 Primary and Secondary Aeroskools event. All events were once again extremely popular with a record number of competitors representing Victoria at the 2014 Australian Aerobic Gymnastics and the 2014 Aeroskools National Championships. A dedicated and stable Technical Committee, committed coaches and judges, ensure that Victoria is successful at National Level competition and that gymnasts progress to representing Australia at International Level. The Victorian State Aerobic Gymnastics team performed particularly well at the 2014 Australian Aerobic Championships. Nine gymnasts were selected onto the National Squad and a further 15 gained selection onto the National Development Squad. Victorian gymnasts and coaches were selected to represent Australia at all International competitions, including two gymnasts at the 2014 World Aerobic Gymnastics Championships, which was a huge achievement. Victorians won Gymnastics Australia awards in the categories of: Coach of the Year, Official of the Year, Senior Athlete of the Year and Levels Athlete of the Year. Judges courses were very well attended this year with many judges seeking reaccreditation and advancement of their qualifications. Those who participated all successfully completed Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced and Advanced Silver courses. There was also an increase in the number of new judges in AG and it was particularly pleasing to see our elite athletes begin to take on roles on the judging panels. Our judges were able to gain experience and provide their expertise at local, state, interstate, national and international events this year. Special mention to Lana Roden and Judith Gillen who were both selected to judge at international events. Further congratulations must go to Judith Gillen who not only was elected as the Judging Coordinator on National Commission in 2014 but who also received the Official of the Year Award at National Championships for her commitment to the sport. Our focus for 2015 is to maintain the healthy judging pool numbers by providing further opportunities for education and experience and to also encourage, recruit and support our smaller clubs into judging. It has also been a very impressive year for Victorian aerobic gymnasts and coaches. Victoria ran the only Intermediate Aerobic Coaches Course in Australia, which was very well received and was a great refresher and up-skill for many new and existing coaches. The High Performance program was successful providing a valuable opportunity for high performance gymnasts to participate in workshops with a variety of specialist coaches, presenters and judges. The AG Technical Committee would like to thank GV for their time and effort in helping the committee to perform their roles and support them to continue to develop the sport. 23 TRAMPOLINE GYMNASTICS Jennifer O’Connor, Technical Director The 2014 Australian Gymnastics Championships was held in Victoria for the first time in some years. Our gymnasts came away with some great results, which are outlined below. We generously thank the Team Management and all officials representing this state for their contribution, without it we could not function as a team. We look forward to another home based championship in 2015. Individual Trampoline Youth International Men: William McGrath (1st place) Synchronised Trampoline Junior International Men: Alex Dillon and Cameron Scott (2nd place) Junior International Women: Georgia McMahon and Olivia Davies (3rd place) Double Mini Trampoline Youth International Men: William McGrath (3rd place) Youth International Women: Jasmine Slade (3rd place) Senior International Women: Georgia McMahon (1st place) Senior International Women: Emily O’Connor (2nd place) The 2014 Combined Victorian Championships was held at the State Netball & Hockey Centre in conjunction with the Trampoline Gymnastics (TRP) TC and GV. The TRP TC would like to thank Cheltenham Youth Club for co-hosting along with all the volunteers who made the Championship a success. We would also like to acknowledge the support of Jacqui Godfrey and Cathy Lorenzin from GV for helping deliver a great competition. 24 The successful move to incorporate the Victorian Levels All Stars Challenge into the Victorian Championships program for 2014 has seen the continued growth in our sport and will continue for 2015, as the Championships is held again at the State Netball & Hockey Centre. Our gymnasts had outstanding results in two international competitions this year starting with a very successful 2014 Indo Pacific Championships in Sun City South Africa with representation from the following athletes: Emily O’Connor, Alex Dillon, William McGrath, Aiden Winder and Harrison Tullberg. Our athletes came away with a swag of gold, silver and bronze medals and we congratulate them on their selection and success. The 2014 World Championships was also held in Daytona, Florida USA represented by Emily O’Connor (10th Place) and Ryan Hatfield (27th Place) both for Double Mini Trampoline apparatus. Congratulations to the five athletes who were selected to the TRP National Squad: William McGrath, Alex Dillon and Cameron Scott in the Junior National Squad, Emily O’Connor and Ryan Hatfield. I wish to thank the TRP TC including Louisa Phillipson, Sarah Hiesler, Marian McGrath, Sophie Swain, Adrian Wareham, Mark Nimmervol and our first regional member Emma Carmody. Thank you to Jamie Parsons and all the staff at GV for their continued support of TRP in Victoria. Gymnastics Victoria Annual Report 2014 ACROBATIC GYMNASTICS Wendy Treble, Technical Director Victoria sent 10 groups/pairs as well as supporting coaches and judges to the 2014 Australian Gymnastics Championships, which proved to be a small but very strong team. This team was quite successful, with three pairs taking gold and most teams finishing in the Top 4. A fantastic effort and one that Victoria clubs can be very proud of, given the size of the team. The physical testing introduced in 2013 has overall, not been well received by the community as they felt that they had been addressing that area, especially in conjunction with the specific skill sets each group/pair were performing. To ensure positivity in the process of the state team selection process the Acrobatic Gymnastics Technical Committee (AG TC) reviewed and compared results at Nationals verses the physical testing results and found there was no correlation between them. Those groups/pairs that gained high results in the physical testing did not translate to medal placing at Nationals. Those with low results did medal. Upon additional review and discussion it was agreed that Artistry is the biggest area that Victoria as a whole could improve upon not the performance of skills or physical testing. Thus for 2014-2015 the AG TC will ensure this area is addressed and the community is offered opportunities to communicate more clearly, learn from offered workshops and move the sport forward and hopefully assist with performances at the Australian Gymnastics Championships and the National Clubs Championships. It has been encouraging to see coaches, athletes and judges welcome interstate workshop presenters to Victoria. These presenters have created a neutral learning environment and taught participants more about the application of FIG rules for Acrobatic Gymnastics. The 2015 Selection Policy was also updated to assist officials in their role, grow the Acrobatic State Team and make the selection requirements clearer for coaches, their gymnasts and the wider community. The policy was released very early to ensure all relevant persons were aware of the changes and new requirements. Victoria AG Clubs and GV run great events and we are seeing an increase in participation from interstate gymnastics clubs. This is a boost to our sport as we have reasonably low numbers so these interstate relationships are something that the AG TC and the community should continue to foster as the end result increases the standard and profile of the sport in Victoria. To also increase participation the AG TC is looking to add to a display category to our premier competition. Additionally AG has now been included in the 2015 InterSchool Gymnastics competition to assist with promoting our sport to Primary and Secondary schools. Thank you to Alan Keating for working with GV events to facilitate these changes. Our 10 activity event is something the AG community should be very proud of growing in 2014. Further emphasis will be given to the event in the future as it has the potential to increase the number of athletes into our sport. The NSMC have just released a new version of the L1-3A ALP – this is based on the NSW system. The ALP manual is a great tool for all clubs as it’s easier to understand and implement. The TC is looking forward to working with GV in 2015 to get this into more clubs and boost our participation. I would also like to note and welcome new clubs into the AG community: Belle Etudes in Bendigo and SPC Gymsports in Ballarat. Lastly, I would like to thank the AG TC members, GV staff, Board Member David Hill and the community for the support you have given me during my first year as Technical Director. Let us all continue to work together – keep communication clear and create more opportunities to give more people in Victoria the chance to be involved in this incredible sport. 25 VICTORIAN STATE The Foundation is separate to, but works closely with, Gymnastics Victoria. The Gymnastics Foundation helps deserving cases of gymnastic endeavour of all kinds which might not succeed without financial assistance. Since the Foundation commenced its annual grants program in 2010, more than $35,000 has been distributed to Victorian clubs. Past grants have been awarded for equipment and club infrastructure and to develop athletes, coaches, judges, officials and administrators. The Foundation is managed by a Board of Honorary Directors: Associate Professor Geoff Sussman OAM (Chair), Mr John Higgins (Treasurer) and Mr Murray Chessell OAM. Our Mission is to: 1. assist gymnastics clubs to develop and promote Gymsports, thereby enhancing participation and performance in Victoria; 2. assist clubs experiencing emergency situations or special needs; 3. encourage philanthropy from members of the gymnastics and wider communities. The Year in Review 2014 saw work continuing steadily behind the scenes to increase awareness of the Foundation within the Victorian gymnastics community. The Directors identified the need for the Foundation to improve its online presence as a priority. Following a review of the existing Foundation pages within the Gymnastics Victoria website, a project commenced to create a new stand-alone website. Of primary importance was creating an online donation facility linked into the Australian Sports Foundation, through which 32 the Gymnastics Foundation is able to accept tax deductible donations. Due for completion in the early part of 2015, this long-awaited initiative will simplify the donation process significantly and will undoubtedly raise the profile of the Foundation Income from investment was reduced due to the prevailing lower interest rate environment. The Directors spent some time examining how the Foundation could ensure its sustainability whilst still supporting clubs through its grant process. The outcome of these discussions was an improved term deposit arrangement being sought and implemented, and the firm resolve to secure additional funding during 2015. The wider community will be approached in this fundraising effort but the support of the Victorian Gymnastics Community will be vital to achieving a healthy future for the Foundation. A particular highlight of the year was the Foundation’s involvement with the inaugural Gymnastics Victoria Family Ball and Awards Night in February. The Foundation was the recipient of the net proceeds from the evening’s ticket sales and from the raffle. At the event Foundation Director and GV Life Patron Murray Chessell spoke on behalf of the Foundation and promotional material was placed at each attendee’s seat. A wonderful total of $2,967 was raised. The Foundation is particularly grateful to Gymnastics Victoria CEO Jamie Parsons who suggested the concept and the Board Members of Gymnastics Victoria who wholeheartedly supported it – both in principle and financially. The Foundation appointed a new Director in November 2014. Long-serving Gymnastics Victoria Board Member and immediate past President Julie Sarll will formally join the Foundation in January 2015 and will bring valuable insight and many years of management expertise in the sport sector to the Foundation. Gymnastics Victoria Annual Report 2014 Thank you to our Supporters A number of people make a significant contribution the Foundation, enabling it to run without incurring operational costs. The Directors acknowledge and thank the Gymnastics Foundation’s Development Manager Emma Kelly who manages the day-to-day running of the Foundation on a pro-bono basis. Gymnastics Victoria provides office space and CEO Jamie Parsons and his team support the Foundation with time and expertise. Gymnastics Victoria assists with preparing the annual financial statements for the Foundation and Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu provide auditing services on a pro-bono basis. Donations to the Gymnastics Foundation Donations over $2 are tax deductable, through our arrangement with the Australian Sports Foundation. The Australian Sports Foundation (ASF) was established by the federal government to assist organisations raise funds through public and corporate donations for the development of sport in Australia. The Foundation’s important partnership with the ASF will continue to strengthen as both organisations further develop their online presence. The Foundation thanks all our donors for 2014, especially: Gold Donor – Gymnastics Victoria Awards Night Silver Donor – J. Parsons equipment upgrades, programs that support disadvantaged children and youth and regional and small clubs. The Directors selected 10 clubs to be the recipients of grants of up to $1,000 this year: Benalla Coach & Judge Training Blue Lake (Mt Gambier) Safety Lighting East Gippsland Equipment (springboards) Hamilton Equipment (safety mats) Leongatha Equipment (safety mats) Maffra Equipment (foam blocks) Moorabool Equipment (general) MYC (Mornington) Equipment (general) Moyhu Equipment (vault table) NiddrieEquipment & Gym Program (special needs children) 2014 Grants The Foundation received a record number of grant applications from GV affiliated clubs in 2014. It was very encouraging to see this increase and it demonstrates an improved awareness of the work of the Foundation in the Victorian gymnastics community. The focus of grants for the year was on safety 33 GYMNASTICS DEVELOPMENT Alison Lyons, Gymnastics Development Manager It was another successful year for GV in 2014, with a 6.71% increase in membership. Registered athlete increased from 37 017 to 39 500 overall. Of these athletes, 77% were female and 22.9% were male. More than 3500 people with Disability are participating in Gymnastics in Victoria through schools, clubs and external programs. Waverley Gymnastics Centre again recorded the most registered members with 1703. Other top preforming clubs included: Jets Gymnastics Eltham, Footscray City Gym Club as well as Twisters Gymnastics Club, which recorded the highest number of new registrations. A new membership fee structure was also introduced in 2014, which has enabled GV to keep fees low for all affiliated gymnastics clubs. Affiliation GV welcomed 8 new clubs to the gymnastics community in 2014. Affiliated gymnastics clubs included: • Aerodynamic • Aerobic Gymnastics • Belle Etudes Pty Ltd • Flipping Fit • Palmers Gym • Sapphire Coast Academy • St Patrick’s College Gymsports 34 Club Development The Gymnastics Development Team focused heavily on customer service and delivering individualised service to each of the Victorian clubs. We increased club visits from 80+ in 2013 to over 600 in 2014 and increased our presence in the community. GV continued to successfully support clubs in the areas of participation and inclusion. 12 clubs became leader clubs in inclusion by completing the inclusive club guidelines and supporting others in the community. More inclusive opportunities were offered to clubs and participants. In 2014, 16 new clubs became LaunchPad accredited, which increased the total number of LaunchPad accredited clubs in Victoria to 40. LaunchPad clubs have the capacity to promote the benefits of gymnastics to their members and are seen as leaders in participation. In addition, 16 GV clubs participated in a state wide Come and Try Campaign with 32 classes held across Victoria. Gymnastics Victoria Annual Report 2014 GYMNASTICS DEVELOPMENT Alison Lyons, Gymnastics Development Manager (Continued) GV also continued to partner with industry experts to deliver support and services for Victorian Clubs. HR Plus continued to provide support to clubs by developing and providing samples of best practice agreements, awards and policies. Some of these were: • Employment Agreements • Alignment of Coaching Qualifications to Fitness Industry Award Explanatory Document • Fitness Industry Award (current version) • Fitness Industry Award – pay rates, penalty rates & allowances reckoner • Bullying Policy Fair Work Information Statement (required to be given to all new staff ) BabyGym program at Palmer’s Gym in Bendigo, Victoria • Hours of Work Policy Frank Sahlein from 3rd Level Consulting also returned to Victoria for the 2014 large Club Conference in July. Club Owners, Presidents and Managers of Australia’s largest clubs were provided with resources to continue to develop and grow their clubs with best practice ideas from the Children’s Activity Industry. The Gymnastics Victoria Development Team continues to focus on delivering quality customer service and programs to our affiliated clubs and we thank you all for contributing to a very successful 2014. The team looks forward to working with your in 2015 and developing Gymnastics at your club and in Victoria. 35 EVENTS & MARKETING Jacqui Godfrey, Events & Marketing Manager It was a year of both growth and consolidation for the Events & Marketing Team in 2014. As always, the Victorian gymnastics calendar was fully-packed with events, initiatives and tours occurring almost every week of the year. Both event participation and spectator numbers have increased from 2013, and we plan to continue to build in future years. GV events would not be possible without our huge team of supporters, whose time, expertise and tireless efforts contribute to the execution of high quality events. In particular, we thank the Technical Committees, Duty Managers, Logistics and Medical teams, Copresentation Club teams and volunteers for your support. The final thank you goes to our valued Silver sponsors, GK Elite Sportswear and Chalk Gymnastics Wear. These sponsors contribute immensely to GV and our community, and are greatly valued. 2014 marked the end of our current three-year agreements and we are thrilled to have both GK and Chalk back on board, continuing their support in 2015 and beyond. Highlights of 2014 • In February GV welcomed two new staff members to the team – Carolyn Jones (Events & Logistics Officer) and Megan Smith (Marketing & Communications Officer). Both staff members have contributed greatly to GV and have become well-regarded in the gymnastics community. • The inaugural Family Ball & Awards night was a tremendous success, and a fitting celebration of the successes of Victoria’s gymnastics community. • Gymnasts from every single gymsport represented Australia at 2014 International competitions or performances. 36 • Victorian experts were at the forefront of the development of the new WAG Australian Levels Program (ALP). We are very fortunate to have a group of such talented and passionate people in Victoria. Victorian Events The 2014 Combined Victorian Championships (including Men’s, Women’s, Rhythmic and Trampoline Gymnastics) was once again our premier competition, and a great success. Due to timing clashes with the National calendar, unfortunately some of the Women’s International Stream athletes were unable to compete. The Elite Victorian Championships, however, was a highlight in itself. Jets Gymnastics worked tirelessly to transform the Community Bank stadium into a gymnastics arena, and we welcomed Senior athletes from WA and NSW to compete amongst our best Women’s gymnasts. GV reached some key inclusion milestones in the middle of the year, with a diverse group of participants competing in both our State Pennant event series (culminating in the GK Elite State Pennant Finals & Special Olympics State Games) and InterSchool Gymnastics. A team of Special Olympics gymnasts were also included in displays at each premier event throughout the year, demonstrating our slogan “Gymnastics for Everybody” is in practice at GV events. The Acrobatic and Aerobic Gymnastics Victorian Championships were held once again at the State Netball & Hockey Centre. As always, this event is a real celebration of the joy of gymnastics, with a great buzz in the crowd and among participants. Gymnastics Victoria Annual Report 2014 EVENTS & MARKETING Jacqui Godfrey, Events & Marketing Manager (Continued) The 2014 Women’s Victorian Championships marked the end of an era, as our State Stream athletes competed one last time within the current regulations. There was both emotion and excitement displayed by the State Stream competitors, as they head into the new ALP from 2015. GV’s third and final year of hosting Women’s National Clubs was hailed as the best ever. We now look forward to the new era of National Clubs carnivals, to be hosted by Gymnastics Australia from 2015. Across the year GV partnered with 14 Copresentation Clubs to deliver another 28 Tier 2 events across each of our Gymsports. A further 64 sanctioned Invitationals took place around the state, engaging clubs throughout Victoria. Australian Gymnastics Championships Victoria continued its traditional success at the 2014 Australian Gymnastics Championships. Our positive team culture was evident in our team slogan (Go Vics!) and more importantly through the attitudes and actions of our team members. Victoria took home a total of 266 medals, over 40% of which were gold. For the first of three years, the MAG, WAG, RG, TRP and ACR State Teams competed in Melbourne’s own Hisense Arena. It was great to have an Australian Gymnastics Championships in our own backyard and to take advantage of the opportunity for friends, family and fans to see our top athletes in action. We again sent a strong Victorian contingent to the 2014 Australian Aerobic Championships in Brisbane. This is our biggest State team, with over 100 people. Nearly half of the team achieved a podium placing – an amazing effort. We are very proud of all of our State teams, who are always great ambassadors for Victoria. Marketing It was pleasing to see an increased focus on Marketing throughout 2014. Principal goals for the year were to establish formalised marketing processes, and enhance our existing events and initiatives with a customer service focus. GV embraced social media in 2014, with a 15% increase in social media followers. Strong community involvement was a key achievement, with our social media engagement of 30% being well above the industry average. Traditional media coverage reached an all-time high, with 156 published articles (an average of three per week) as well as 120 website news articles. Gymnastics Victoria also featured in two National news segments on Channel 9 and Channel 10 ahead of the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games. The GV Staff and Board were on-hand to meet the community at each of our premier events through our new Customer Service Desk initiative. The desk was open each day throughout each Tier 1 event, providing information about GV’s products and services, as well as the opportunity to ask staff members about anything related to their affiliation with GV. Looking ahead, we aim to build on 2014’s successes and increase the commerciality of our events, perhaps with some new and exciting events added to the calendar – watch this space! 37 FAMILY BALL & AWARDS NIGHT Jacqui Godfrey, Events and Marketing Manager In February 2015, 400 of Victoria’s gymnasts, officials, their families and club staff from the gymnastics community came together to celebrate the 2014 successes and contributions of members across all gymsports at the GV Family Ball & Awards Night. Hosted by Monette Russo (World Championships Bronze Medallist and Commonwealth Games Gold Medallist) and David Morris (Sochi Winter Olympics Silver Medallist), the evening was held at the picturesque Lakeside Events & Functions in Albert Park. For the first time ever, in the lead-up the gymnastics community had the opportunity to vote for the winners in the selected award categories. Voting contributed 50% towards the decision of each award’s winner. There were over 140 finalists and more than 35 awards were presented to winners for individual and group achievements, coaching excellence, volunteer dedication and inclusive initiatives. Among the night’s award recipients were: • Larrissa Miller (Female Gymnast of the Year) • Luke Wadsworth (Male Gymnast of the Year) • Ben Pocklington (Coach of the Year) • John Hart (High Performance Coach of the Year) • Sue Patrick (Volunteer of the Year) • Sue Cowdell (Official of the Year) • PIT Gymnastics / YMCA Endeavour Hills (Inclusive Initiative of the Year) • Tim Robertson (Inclusive Leader of the Year) • Acrofun (Small Club of the Year) • Flyaway Gymnastics (Medium Club of the Year) • Eastern Gymnastics Club (Large Club of the Year) • Flyaway Gymnastics Club (Club of the Year) 38 Men’s Gymnastics • Luke Wadsworth (Senior International Gymnast of the Year / VMHPC) • Scott Brooks (Junior International Gymnast of the Year / VWHPC) • Caelan Bacon (Levels Gymnast of the Year / Knox Gymnastics) Women’s Gymnastics • Meagan Silvers (Award of Excellence National Stream Gymnast of the Year / MLC Gymnastics Club) • MYC Coaching Team (Award of Excellence Coach of the Year / MLC Gymnastics Club) • Rachel Williams (Award of Excellence Regional Coach of the Year) • Alysha Djuric (Junior International Gymnast of the Year / VWHPC (Waverley Gymnastics Centre)) • Larrissa Miller (Senior International Gymnast of the Year / Waverley Gymnastics Centre)) Rhythmic Gymnastics • Taylor Tirahardjo (Gymnast of the Year / Ruyton Rhythmic Gymnastics Club) • Alexandra Kiroi (Rising Star / Prahran Rhythmic Gymnastics) • Ying Cui Chan (Award of Excellence / Ruyton Rhythmic Gymnastics Club) Gymnastics Victoria Annual Report 2014 FAMILY BALL & AWARDS NIGHT Jacqui Godfrey, Events and Marketing Manager (Continued) Aerobic Gymnastics Acrobatic Gymnastics • Georgia Martin (Level 3-5 Athlete of the Year /Cheltenham Youth Club) • Nina Iafrate (Level 6 & 7 Athlete of the Year / Loreto Gymnastics Club) • Annabel Muttdon (International Athlete of the Year / Loreto Gymnastics Club) • Aaron Mavro and Siubhan McBain (Excellence in Acrobatic Gymnastics / Nunawading Gymnastics and Sports Club) • Blake Treble and Molly Harvey-Yin (Excellence in Acrobatic Gymnastics / Nunawading Gymnastics and Sports Club) • Samantha Whitehead (Excellence in Acrobatic Gymnastics / Healesville Gymnastics Trampoline Gymnastics • Ryan Hatfield (Senior Male Trampoline Gymnast of the Year / Omega Trampoline Sports Club) • Emily O’Connor (Senior Female Trampoline Gymnast of the Year / Cheltenham Youth Club) • Cameron Scott (Junior Trampoline Gymnast of the Year / Omega Trampoline Sports Club) 39 WORKFORCE Nastashia Buck, Education Coordinator The first half of 2014 saw a change in guard for the GV Education Team, with myself stepping into the role at the end of April 2014. During 2014, there were 1835 gymnastics judges and coaches in Victoria . A large number of these members participated in GV’s education programs. In 2014, GV also increased the coaches pool overall from 1202 to 1455. There was also an overall increase in judges in 2014 from 355 to 380. During 2014, the GV Education Team successfully ran 23 Beginner Coaching Courses and 28 Intermediate Coaching Courses. With a focus on servicing all Gymsports, the Education Team also successfully ran an intermediate coaching and judging course in every technical committee governed Gymsport, as well as running numerous courses throughout regional Victoria. Our commitment to upskilling and developing our judges was also demonstrated by 28 courses being run across multiple Gymsports in 2014. We have continued to develop our coaches to be inclusive in their coaching, with 255 coaches participating in inclusion workshops in 2014. In addition, Victoria is also the proud home of 33 Inclusion Presenters, who regularly promote the most up to date inclusive messages to coaches and clubs. With the coaching appeals process that consumed the majority of 2013 finalised, Education could now move forward with new projects and initiatives. 40 These new areas of focus required the help and expertise of casual staff Zoe Lorenzin and Arngelika Schoo, who assisted with sanctioning club workshops, helping with updating and reaccreditation queries, sanctioning and processing coaching and judging courses and providing help with any request that crossed their desk. The success of education in 2014 was entirely a team effort and many thanks are given to the GV Education Team for their tireless effort. 2015 will see the release of the Gymnastics Australia Advanced Coaching Course, which will provide a platform for further professional development with a strong focus on Anatomy and Biomechanics. The course is expected to be a large transition jump for current intermediate coaches. GV will continue to work with clubs and coaches to make this transition as smooth as possible. The GV Education team looks forward to 2015 and more educational professional development for our valued members. Gymnastics Victoria is an Association incorporated in Victoria under the Associations Incorporation Reform Act 2012. PRINCIPAL PLACE OF BUSINESS AND REGISTERED OFFICE 138 High Street Prahran VIC 3181 The Association’s principal activities are to promote and support the sport of gymnastics in Victoria. NOTE 2: APPLICATION OF NEW AND REVISED ACCOUNTING STANDARDS 2.1 Standards and Interpretations in issue not yet adopted At the date of adoption of the financial statements, the Standards and Interpretations listed below were in issue but not yet effective. Standard/Interpretation AASB 2014-4 ‘Amendments to Australian Accounting Standards – Clarification of Acceptable Methods of Depreciation and Amortisation’ AASB 15 Revenue from Contracts with Customers Effective for annual reporting periods beginning on or after Expected to be initially applied in the financial year ending 1 January 2016 31 December 2016 1 January 2017 31 December 2017 At the date of adoption of the financial statements, the following IASB Standards and IFRIC Interpretations were also in issue but not yet effective, although Australian equivalent Standards and Interpretations have not yet been issued. Annual Improvements to IFRS 2012 – 2014 cycle Disclosure Initiative (Amendments to IAS 1) 1 July 2016 31 December 2017 1 January 2016 1 January 2016 The Association has adopted all standards and interpretations that were effective for the first time and they had no material impact on the financial statements. NOTE 3: SIGNIFICANT ACCOUNTING POLICIES FINANCIAL REPORTING FRAMEWORK The Association is not a reporting entity because in the opinion of the Board members there are unlikely to exist users of the financial report who are unable to command the preparation of reports tailored so as to satisfy specifically all of their information needs. Accordingly, these special purpose financial statements have been prepared to satisfy the Board members’ reporting requirements under the Associations Incorporation Reform Act 2012. For the purpose of preparing the financial statements, the Association is a not-for-profit entity. STATEMENT OF COMPLIANCE The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the Associations Incorporation Reform Act 2012, the recognition and measurement requirement specified by all Australian Accounting Standards and Interpretations, and the disclosure requirements of Accounting Standards AASB 101 ‘Presentation of Financial Statements’, AASB 107 ‘Statements of Cash Flows’, AASB 108 ‘Accounting Policies, Changes in Accounting Estimates and Errors’ and AASB 1054 ‘Australian Additional Disclosures’. BASIS OF PREPARATION The financial statements have been prepared on the basis of historical cost. Historical cost is generally based on the fair values of the consideration given in exchange for goods and services. All amounts are presented in Australian dollars, unless otherwise noted. ACCOUNTING POLICIES a. Inventories Inventories are stated at the lower of cost and net realisable value. Costs of inventories are determined on a first-in-first-out basis. Net realisable value represents the estimated selling price for inventories less all estimated costs of completion and costs necessary to make the sale. b. Property, Plant and Equipment Each class of property, plant and equipment is carried at cost less, where applicable, any accumulated depreciation and impairment losses. 47 Depreciation Depreciation is recognised so as to write off the cost or valuation of assets less their residual values over their useful lives, using the straight-line method. The estimated useful lives, residual values and depreciation method are reviewed at the end of each reporting period, with the effect of any changes in estimate accounted for on a prospective basis. A review of depreciation identified that previous rates used were too agressive. Depreciation rates have since been revised, however depreciation recognised in prior financial years has not been changed, rather, the change in depreciation rates has been accounted for on a ‘prospective’ basis.” The depreciation rates used for each class of depreciable assets are: Class of Fixed Asset Gymnastics equipment Office equipment Computer equipment Motor Vehicle Depreciation Rate 10-25% 5-50% 17-33% 8% An item of property, plant and equipment is derecognised upon disposal or when no future economic benefits are expected to arise from the continued use of the asset. Any gain or loss arising on the disposal or retirement of an item of property, plant and equipment is determined as the difference between the sales proceeds and the carrying amount of the asset and is recognised in profit or loss. c. Leases Leases are classified as finance leases whenever the terms of the lease transfer substantially all the risks and rewards of ownership to the lessee. All other leases are classified as operating leases Assets held under finance leases are initially recognised as assets of the Association at their fair value at the inception of the lease or, if lower, at the present value of the minimum lease payments. The corresponding liability to the lessor is included in the statement of financial position as a finance lease obligation. Lease payments are apportioned between finance expenses and reduction of the lease obligation so as to achieve a constant rate of interest on the remaining balance of the liability. Finance expenses are recognised immediately in profit or loss, unless they are directly attributable to qualifying assets, in which case they are capitalised in accordance with the Association’s general policy on borrowing costs. Contingent rentals are recognised as expenses in the periods in which they are incurred. Operating lease payments are recognised as an expense on a straight-line basis over the lease term, except where another systematic basis is more representative of the time pattern in which economic benefits from the leased asset are consumed. Contingent rentals arising under operating leases are recognised as an expense in the period in which they are incurred. In the event that lease incentives are received to enter into operating leases, such incentives are recognised as a liability. The aggregate benefit of incentives is recognised as a reduction of rental expense on a straight-line basis, except where another systematic basis is more representative of the time pattern in which economic benefits from the leased asset are consumed. d. Impairment of Assets At each reporting date, the Association reviews the carrying amounts of its assets to determine whether there is any indication that those assets have suffered an impairment loss. If any such indication exists, the recoverable amount of the asset is estimated in order to determine the extent of the impairment loss (if any). Where the asset does not generate cash flows that are independent from other assets, the Association estimates the recoverable amount of the cash-generating unit to which the asset belongs. Recoverable amount is the higher of fair value less costs to sell and value in use. As the future economic benefits of the Association’s assets are not primarily dependent on their ability to generate net cash inflows, and if deprived of the asset, the Association would replace the asset’s remaining future economic benefits. The ‘value in use’ is determined as the depreciated replacement cost of the asset, rather than by using discounted future cash flows. Depreciated replacement cost is defined as the current replacement cost of an asset less, where applicable, accumulated depreciation calculated on the basis of such cost to reflect the already consumed or expired future economic benefits of the asset. The current replacement cost of an asset is its cost measured by reference to the lowest cost at which the gross future economic benefits of that asset could currently be obtained in the normal course of business. If the recoverable amount of an asset (or cash-generating unit) is estimated to be less than its carrying amount, the carrying amount of the asset (cash-generating unit) is reduced to its recoverable amount. An impairment loss is recognised immediately in profit or loss, unless the relevant asset is carried at revalued amount, in which case the impairment loss is treated as a revaluation decrease. Where an impairment loss subsequently reverses, the carrying amount of the asset (cash-generating unit) is increased to the revised estimate of its recoverable amount, but only to the extent that the increased carrying amount does not exceed the carrying amount that would have been determined had no impairment loss been recognised for the asset (cash-generating unit) in prior years. A reversal of an impairment loss is recognised immediately in profit or loss, unless the relevant asset is carried at fair value, in which case the reversal of the impairment loss is treated as a revaluation increase. 48 Gymnastics Victoria Annual Report 2014 e. Employee Benefits A liability is recognised for benefits accruing to employees in respect of wages and salaries, annual leave, and long service leave when it is probable that settlement will be required and they are capable of being measured reliably. Liabilities recognised in respect of short-term employee benefits, are measured at their nominal values using the remuneration rate expected to apply at the time of settlement. Liabilities recognised in respect of long term employee benefits are measured as the present value of the estimated future cash outflows to be made by the Association in respect of services provided by employees up to reporting date. f. Cash and Cash Equivalents Cash and cash equivalents includes cash on hand, deposits held at call with banks, other short-term highly liquid investments with original maturities of three months or less. g. Revenue Recognition Revenue is measured at the fair value of the consideration received or receivable. Revenue is recognised when the right to receive the revenue has been established. Revenue from registrations is recognised over the period the registration relates to. Revenue from the sale of goods is recognised when the goods are delivered and titles have passed at which time the Association has transferred to the buyer the significant risks and rewards of ownership of the goods and the amount of revenue can be measured reliably. Revenue from the provision of services is recognised upon the delivery of the service to the recipient. Interest income from a financial asset is recognised when it is probable that the economic benefits will flow to the Association and the amount of revenue can be measured reliably. Interest income is accrued on a time basis, by reference to the principal outstanding and at the effective interest rate applicable, which is the rate that exactly discounts estimated future cash receipts through the expected life of the financial asset to that asset’s net carrying amount on intial recognition. All revenue is stated net of the amount of goods and services tax (GST). h. Contributions - Government Grants/Donations A contribution occurs when the Association receives an asset, including the right to receive cash or other forms of asset without directly giving approximately equal value to the other party to the transfer; that is, when there is a non-reciprocal transfer. Contributions would include donations and government grants. Contributions that are income exclude contributions by owners. Income from contributions is recognised when all the following conditions are satisfied: • the Association obtains control of the contribution or right to receive the contribution; • it is probable the economic benefits comprising the contribution will flow to the Association; and • the amount of the contribution can be measured reliably. Income arising from contributions is measured at the fair value of the contributions received or receivable. i. Goods and Services Tax (GST) Revenues, expenses and assets are recognised net of the amount of goods and services tax (GST), except: i.Where the amount of GST incurred is not recoverable from the taxation authority, it is recognised as part of the cost of acquisition of an asset or as part of an item of expense; or ii.For receivables and payables which are recognised inclusive of GST. The net amount of GST recoverable from, or payable to, the taxation authority is included as part of receivables or payables. Cash flows are included in the statement of cash flows on a net basis. The GST component of cash flows arising from investing and financing activities which is recoverable from, or payable to, the taxation authority is classified as operating cash flows. j. Trade and Other Payables Trade and other payables represent the liability outstanding at the end of the reporting period for goods and services received by the Association during the reporting period which remain unpaid. The balance is recognised as a current liability with the amounts normally paid within 30 days of recognition of the liability. k. Trade and Other Receivables Receivables are measured at amortised cost less any impairment. An estimate for doubtful debts is made when collection of the full amount is no longer probable. 49 l. Provisions Provisions are recognised when the Association has a present obligation (legal or constructive) as a result of past event, it is probable that the Association will be required to settle the obligation, and a reliable estimate can be made of the amount of the obligation. The amount recognised as a provision is the best estimate of the consideration required to settle the present obligation at the end of the reporting period, taking into account the risks and uncertainties surrounding the obligation. When a provision is measured using the cash flows estimated to settle the present obligation, its carrying amount is the present value of those cash flows (where the effect of the time value of money is material). When some or all of the economic benefits required to settle a provision are expected to be recovered from a third party, a receivable is recognised as an asset if it is virtually certain that reimbursement will be received and the amount of the receivable can be measured reliably. m. Critical Accounting Estimates and Judgments Key judgements - Impairment The Association assesses impairment at the end of each reporting period by evaluating conditions and events specific to the Association that may be indicative of impairment triggers. The board do not believe that any indicators of impairment exist at the reporting date. Key estimates - Employee benefits The long service leave provision is based upon the probability that staff will continue to be employed by the Association until such time as they are entitled to long service leave on a pro-rata basis. These probabilities are estimates based on past history of staff turnover. Annual leave entitlements as at 31 December 2014 for the majority of staff are expected to be used within 12 months of balance date. Therefore the provision for annual leave is calculated on a normal basis rather than discounting the annual leave liability over the period in which the annual leave is expected to be used. Key judgments - Provision for impairment of receivables All long standing debts identified by management through correspondence and those which are unlikely to be received have been included in the provision for impairment of receivables. n. Income Tax The Association is exempt from income tax under Division 50 of the Income Tax Assessment Act 1997. 50 Gymnastics Victoria Annual Report 2014 NOTES TO FINANCIAL STATEMENTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2014 NOTE 4: SURPLUS/ (DEFICIT) FOR THE YEAR Surplus / (Deficit) for the year has been arrived at after charging (crediting): Depreciation of property, plant and equipment Employee benefits expense Doubtful debt expense Gain on sale of non-current assets 2014 $ 2013 $ 20,709 1,826,362 17,156 (21,429) 26,301 1,914,407 - NOTE 5: CASH AND CASH EQUIVALENTS For the purposes of the statement of cash flows, cash and cash equivalents include cash on hand and in banks, net of outstanding bank overdrafts.
