Hallo LaserDisc- und DVD-Fans,
liebe Filmfreunde!
Das Warten hat ein Ende: der erste LASER
HOTLINE NEWSLETTER in digitaler Form ist
Realität geworden. Als wir vor 10 Jahren
unseren ersten Newsletter als Print-Publikation
verschickt haben, dachte noch niemand daran,
dass die Entwicklung im Bereich der
Informationsverbreitung so rasant voranschreiten würde. Damals war das Internet mit seinen
vielfältigen Möglichkeiten noch nicht in aller
Munde. Heute ist es nicht mehr wegzudenken.
Wie schnell Entwicklungen heutzutage gehen
sieht man auch sehr einfach an der Tatsache,
dass wir damals noch mit LaserDisc gehandelt
haben. Die LaserDisc war seinerzeit das HighEnd-Medium für anspruchsvolle Filmfans. Nun,
das sieht heute ganz anders aus. Die LaserDisc
wurde innerhalb kürzester Zeit durch das neue
Medium DVD verdrängt. Und genauso verhält
es sich jetzt im Bereich unseres Newsletters.
Hier wird die Print-Version innerhalb kürzester
Zeit durch die Online-Ausgabe abgelöst. Und
die Vorteile liegen auf der Hand: wesentlich
kostengünstiger, da die hohen Produktions- und
Portokosten entfallen; wesentlich schnellere
Verbreitung; höhere Erscheinungsfrequenz
sowie umfangreichere Informationen bei nahezu
gleichen Kosten; und last but not least: die
Suchfunktionen des Acrobat Readers helfen
beim schnellen Auffinden von bestimmten
Informationen. Kein langes Suchen und
Herumblättern - einfach Klicken. Bis es soweit
war, mussten wir einiges an Arbeit investieren.
Speziell das Einarbeiten in die neue DesktopPublishing-Software hat viel Nerven gekostet.
Bis man alle Tricks und Schwachstellen eines
Programmpakets kennt, vergeht eben viel Zeit.
Aber wir meinen: die Mühe hat sich gelohnt.

handelsüblichen Drucker ausgedruckt werden.

Die Angaben in diesem Newsletter:
Wenn Sie die Titelauflistungen aufmerksam
durchlesen, so fällt Ihnen bestimmt auf, dass
wir hier ein paar Verbesserungen gegenüber den
bisherigen Mailings eingearbeitet haben. So
versuchen wir jetzt grundsätzlich, pro Titel das
Label, den Regisseur, die Spielzeit und das
Veröffentlichungsdatum gemäß den Angaben
der Hersteller anzugeben. Bitte beachten Sie
hierzu, dass viele Hersteller die ursprünglich
angegebenen Termine nicht einhalten und es zu
verspäteten Veröffentlichungen kommen kann.
Insofern sind die Termine in diesem Newsletter
(und natürlich in allen weiteren Ausgaben des
Newsletters) lediglich als Orientierungshilfe

gedacht. Was die technischen Angaben wie
Bildformat oder Tonformate angeht, so sind wir
natürlich auf die Aussagen der Hersteller
angewiesen. Und wie wir schon so oft erfahren
mussten, wissen manche Hersteller leider nicht,
was für Produkte sie eigentlich auf den Markt
bringen. Also: auch diese Angaben gelten wie
immer nur unter Vorbehalt.
Monumentalfilme bei E.M.S.
Es dürfte wohl kaum einen Filmkenner geben,
dem der Name Samuel Bronston nicht geläufig
ist. Bronston war der Mann, der als Produzent
in den sechziger Jahren einige der berühmtesten
Monumentalfilme schuf. Der Dortmunder
Independent E.M.S. hat sich nun vier der
bekanntesten Bronston-Produktionen angenommen, um diese im Juli erstmals als deutsche
DVD-Versionen zu veröffentlichen. Es handelt
sich um DER UNTERGANG DES RÖMISCHEN REICHES, ZIRKUSWELT, 55 TAGE
IN PEKING und EL CID. Gemäß den Intentionen der E.M.S. sollen alle vier Filme im
Letterbox-Format erscheinen. Ein anamorphes
Bild aber will man nur für EL CID spendieren.
Es ist wirklich schade, dass man sich nicht für
eine Neuabtastung des Filmmaterials aller vier
Produktionen entschieden hat, denn ein
anamorphes Bild gehört heutzutage eigentlich
schon ins Pflichtenheft eines jeden Anbieters.
Doch damit nicht genug der Enttäuschung. Alle
Filme - wieder mit Ausnahme von EL CID werden nur über einen Mono-Ton verfügen.
Und das, obwohl für alle Bronston-Epen
Mehrkanaltonmischungen für die damals im
Einsatz befindlichen 70mm-Kopien angefertigt
wurden. Und das nicht nur im Ausland, sondern
auch in Deutschland. Wer die Filme in ordentlichen 70mm-Vorführungen gesehen und gehört
hat, der weiß, wovon wir sprechen. Gewiss: es
ist bestimmt nicht einfach, die 6-kanaligen
Tonmaster aufzutreiben, doch die Mühe hätte
sich gelohnt. Aber - so scheint’s - in dieser
Beziehung ist Deutschland noch Entwicklungsland. Als vorbildlich muss man hier wieder die
Amerikaner loben, die seinerzeit die LaserDiscVersionen von FALL OF THE ROMAN
EMPIRE und EL CID bereits mit 5.1kanaligem Dolby Digital-Ton ausgestattet
haben. Speziell bei Produktionen von solch
epischem Kaliber, wie Bronston sie schuf,
spielt der Ton eine wichtige Rolle. Nicht zuletzt
wegen der opulenten Musikpartituren, die
Spezialisten wie Miklos Rozsa oder Dimitri
Tiomkin komponierten und die nur im echten
Stereosound ihre volle Wirkung zeigen. Aber
vielleicht dürfen wir uns ja eines Tages über
“Special Editions” dieser Filme mit werkgetreuem Ton freuen. Bis dahin müssen es halt die
abgespeckten Fassungen tun.
Das neue Jugendschutzgesetz und mögliche
Folgen:
Sicherlich hat es der Eine oder Andere in den
vergangenen Wochen in den Medien mitverfolgt. Da hat nun unsere Regierung im
Eilverfahren ein neues Jugendschutzgesetz auf
den Weg gebracht. Das hat auch alles seine
Ordnung. Nur einen Punkt gilt es speziell zu
beachten. Bislang konnten Filme durch die
Bundesprüfstelle nur dann begutachtet werden,
wenn eine Jugendbehöre einen entsprechenden
Antrag gestellt hatte. Die BPS entschied nach
Sichtung des Films dann, ob dieser als jugend-
gefährdend einzustufen, sprich: zu indizieren
ist oder nicht. Wurde er als jugendgefährdend
eingestuft, so galt ab jenem Tag für diesen Film
ein Werbe- und Versandverbot. Ist ein Titel
einmal auf den Index gewandert, so haben wir
beispielsweise nur noch die Möglichkeit, diesen
in unseren Geschäftsräumen, die Minderjährige
nicht betreten können, anzubieten. An diesem
Prinzip hat sich nun auch nichts geändert. Neu
allerdings ist, dass die BPS von nun an selbst
tätig werden kann. Branchenexperten befürchten, dass die Anzahl indizierter Filme rapide
steigen wird und sich so mancher Hersteller
überlegen wird, ob derart “gefährdete” Filme
überhaupt noch vermarktet werden. Die Folge
wären eine Flut von gekürzten Fassungen, die
nun wirklich niemand haben möchte. Hier wird
die Praxis zeigen, wie es weitergeht.
DTS Merchandising
Lange hat es gedauert, doch endlich kommt
Bewegung in die Sache. Das schon seit vielen
Wochen restlos ausverkaufte DTS-Schild sowie
die Edelstahltasse werden Mitte bis Ende
Kalenderwoche 29 erwartet. Sobald die Waren
eingetroffen sind, werden wir mit dem Versand
an alle Vorbesteller beginnen. Also: nicht die
Geduld verlieren, sondern schön gemütlich
zurücklehnen und schon einmal Ausschau
halten nach einem geeigneten Plätzchen für das
DTS-Schild...
Fantasy Film Fest
Es geht wieder rund: vom 31. Juli bis 7. August
2002 findet das alljährliche Fantasy Film Fest
in Stuttgart statt. Für das LASER HOTLINE
Team heisst das wieder Durchhalten. Denn die
Gelegenheit, Filme aus den Bereichen Horror /
Fantasy / Sci-Fi in ihren Originalfassungen in
Stuttgarts Vorzeigekinos anschauen zu können,
darf man sich wirklich nicht entgehen lassen.
Bei Redaktionsschluss lag uns der Stuttgarter
Spielplan leider noch nicht vor, doch können
wir mit Bestimmtheit sagen, dass wir während
dieser Zeit unsere Öffnungszeiten und auch die
Zeiten der telefonischen Bestellannahme weiter
reduzieren werden. Eben je nachdem, welche
Filme wir uns anschauen werden (das Fantasy
Film Fest richtet sich leider nicht nach unseren
Dienstzeiten...). Wir bitten daher schon jetzt
um Ihr Verständnis.
So, damit wären wir am Ende des ersten
“digitalen” Editorials angelangt. Sie werden
feststellen, dass die erste digitale Ausgabe des
Newsletters richtig epische Ausmaße angenommen hat! Geplant ist, den DIGITALEN

versenden. Dadurch wird sich der Umfang pro
Ausgabe etwas reduzieren und Sie sind
schneller über wichtige Neuerscheinungen oder

Darauf haben die Fans lange warten müssen - im Oktober ist
es soweit. Steven Spielbergs Meisterwerk E.T. - THE
EXTRATERRESTRIAL landet endlich in den DVD-Regalen.
Am 22. Oktober 2002 wird die rührselige Geschichte vom
kleinen, auf der Erde zurückgelassenen Außerirdischen gleich
in drei Versionen erhältlich sein. Besonderes Augenmerk liegt
dabei natürlich auf dem vier Discs umfassenden “Ultimate Gift
Set”, denn nur dieses Set wird - zusätzlich zu der Neubearbeitung des Films - auch die Originalversion aus dem Jahre 1982
enthalten. Sammler aufgepasst: Universal wird alle drei E.T.Packages nur für eine begrenzte Zeit bereithalten. Ab dem
01.01.2003 werden sie dann für unbestimmte Zeit auf Eis
gelegt. Das deutsche Pendant zur E.T.-Veröffentlichung ist
übrigens für November 2002 geplant. Bei Redaktionsschluss
standen aber die Details der deutschen Fassung noch nicht
fest.

John Carpenters Horrormär THE FOG NEBEL DES GRAUENS zählt zweifellos zu
den besten Arbeiten des Regisseurs. Der
1979 mit relativ niedrigem Budget produzierte Film erzählt die Geschichte eines
kleinen kalifornischen Küstenstädtchens,
das während der großen Jubiläumsfeier von
untoten Seefahrern heimgesucht wird. Der
mehr auf Spannung und weniger auf
Spezialeffekte Wert legende Film zeigt wie
bereits zuvor HALLOWEEN, dass Carpenter
ein virtuoser Filmemacher ist, der es
versteht, mit Kamera, Schnitt und Musik
umzugehen.
THE FOG wird am 27. August 2002 erstmals
in den USA auf DVD veröffentlicht. Die
Produzenten liessen es sich nicht nehmen,
den Film mit einer komplett neuen 5.1Tonmischung auszustatten. Der aufgrund
des geringen Budgets seinerzeit im Kino
nur mit Mono-Kopien zum Einsatz gekommene Film wird dadurch erstmals auch
heimkinotauglich und dürfte John
Carpenters Musik noch eindringlicher
wirken lassen. Dass der von Dean Cundey
fotographierte Film im anamorphen 1:2.35
CinemaScope-Format abgetastet wurde,
versteht sich da fast von selbst.

Die fabelhafte
Welt der Amelie?
Wir haben diesen Filmtitel inzwischen mit einem
großen Fragezeichen versehen. Zumindest für die
deutschen DVD-Versionen. Wer Ausgabe Nr. 84
unseres Newsletters aufmerksam durchgelesen hat, der
bekam bereits eine kleine Kostprobe der AMELIEMisere, die ganz Deutschland heimgesucht hat. Knackpunkt für die Rückrufaktion durch Universal waren
kleine Tonaussetzer, welche die französische Tonspur
gar so fürchterlich entstellt hatten. Keine Rede hingegen war die Rede von der unterdurchschnittlichen
Qualität der deutschen Tonfassung oder des mit falscher Bildformatangabe bedruckten Covers. Nach
vielen Wochen nun ist es Universal gelungen, eine
Neuauflage zu produzieren. Sie können sich bestimmt
vorstellen, mit welcher Eile wir die neue Fassung in
den DVD-Player gewuchtet haben. Immer in der
Hoffnung, dass jetzt alles viele, viel besser wird.
Wer’s glaubt. Gut, mag sein dass die deutschen Dialoge jetzt etwas besser zu hören sind und die Tonaussetzer auf der französichen Spur beseitigt wurden.
Doch zu welchem Preis? Der um einige Dezibel
angehobene Center-Kanal auf den deutschen Tonspuren sorgt jetzt dafür, dass die Stereo-Front etwas
zusammenschrumpft und nicht mehr so klar und
deutlich die Heimkinoanlage zur Geltung bringt wie
ihr französisches Pendant. An der fehlenden Dynamik
der deutschen Tonspur wurde jedoch nichts nachgebessert. Ganz im Gegenteil: offensichtlich hat man jetzt
die Dynamik der französischen Fassung an die der
deutschen Version angeglichen! Das empört natürlich
den eingfleischten Heimkinoenthusiasten, der sich jetzt
vielleicht darüber ärgert, dass er sein erstes Exemplar
zu früh zum Umtausch an Universal geschickt hatte.
Wohl dem, der noch die Erstauflage besitzt. Angesichts
der herrlichen Dynamik des französischen Originals
fallen die kleineren Tonaussetzer fast nicht mehr ins
Gewicht. Und schließlich kann man ja nicht alles
haben. Immerhin wurde die falsche Bildformatangabe
auf den Covern korrigiert. Was kann man sich mehr
wünschen...
