Powerful New Crime
Fighting Vehicle
Nagoya –The Municipal Police Authority today
unveiled their newest weapon in the war against
crime in Nagoya. The vehicle (codenamed “My
Hearty Bike”) is a zippy, 3-speed auto-controlled
propulsion device, utilizing state-of-the-art aluminium and plastic manufacturing processes. Police authorities would not comment on the price
of the research project, but did show off some of
the James Bond-style gadgetry it produced, such
as the ear-drum piercing brakes used to thwart
would-be evil-doers, and a handy front-end luggage compartment capable of holding up to 15
onigiri for long stakeouts. Police plan to equip
officers nationwide with the top secret device as
a means of countering the recent alarming rise in
umbrella thefts and jaywalking.
Forehead Tattoo To Be
Required for Fluent Gaijin
Tokyo –A motion passed this week in the Japanese
Diet that will require all gaijin fluent in Japanese
to wear a permanent forehead tattoo making them
“visible” to nearby Nihonjin. The recent influx
of fluent foreigners has led to increased numbers
of nervous and disconcerted Japanese citizens,
accustomed to thousands of years of being the only
ones able to speak their language.
Local resident Ai Wakana describes a recent encounter with one such foreigner. “I was working at
checkout stand in Jusco, and foreign man just start
talking to me like he was real person!! And then
he pay me 1250 yen when the bill was 750 yen.
With no use a calculator!! I thought gaijin can’t do
math inside the head! I think, maybe not everything
okaasan tell me is right! I was moved, but scary.”

Our reporter, sensing he might not
have another chance at an interview
of such magnitude, pressed on with
another question, querying God as to
the reason for Christianity’s lack of
success in Japan.
“Well, it all comes down to some
bad experiences really. I tried to get
things kick-started a few years back
by appearing to this girl working in
a Soapland in Tokyo. I was trying to
tell her, “Love your neighbor,” but
she was hearing, “Rub your neighbor”, so she kept saying, “That’s what
I’m doing!” Ugh, it was such a mess.
I pretty much gave up after that.
When asked why he hadn’t taken
the time to simply learn Japanese,
he responded, “Oh, come on!! Who
learns Japanese?!?! That’s, like, the
hardest language in the universe!!

Teenagers can be known for
obnoxious behavior, but for one
southwestern Nebraska family, a
study-trip to Japan has transformed
their teenager from mildly annoying
to patently insufferable.
“It started right after he came
home,” reports the exasperated
father. “He refused to use knives
and forks! I told him, ‘I am fine with
cultural understanding and all, but
that there’s American beef! And ya
ain’t gonna cut that with no choppysticks!’ But he wouldn’t respond. He
just sat their looking at us all smug
and superior out of the corner of his
eye, eating kernel corn with those
two damn little twigs!!”
Indeed, rather than a return to
traditional American utensils, the
persistent teen grew his hair long and
held it in a topknot with two golden
chopsticks that he had brought all the
way from Kyoto.
The boy’s mother relates the
story of how it all came to a head.
“It just kind of all blew up one day
when I got fed up and snatched the
chopsticks out of his hair. I says,
‘ain’t no boy of mine gonna be
walking around the house with a bun
in his hair!’ So he jumps up on this
chair and starts screaming and sobbing with his eyes all blood-red, ‘I’m
jozu! I’m jozu! They told me I’m
jozu, damn you!’ I mean, who are
“they”, and what the hell is “jozu”
anyway?” asks the beleaguered
mother.

I wandered lonely as a cloud,
A party raged in Tsuramai.
I picked my way through laughing crowds,
On blue plastic sheets all did lie,
Everyone having fun but me;
For I had failed at Hanami.
As I did stumble through the folk,
Cherry blossom rained on down,
I trod on someone’s phone that broke,
My nose got punched, blood on ground.
I hoped my friends would rescue me,
But they were lost in hanami.
I sought help in another beer.
Towards the stalls I made my way
Although the salesmen I did fear,
By ink on hands their sleeves betrayed.
Oh they were yaks, most certainly,
For they own even hanami.

With beer in hand of food I thought,
So I perused the demise.
And what great foods there could be
bought
With tako cooked every in way;
But on top, fucking kats’bushi
The horrid taste of hanami.
Now with the sun gone from the sky,
My t-shirt sleeves were not enough.
I cursed the cold and wondered why
Others knew to bring warmer stuff
For they were snug and all toasty,
So well prepared for hanami.
With drunken head I did return
Back to the park and down I sat.
But by some guys I soon was spurned,
They shoved me hard off the blue mat.
“This seat reserved here, can’t you see?
“We’ve staked our claim, our hanami!”
Alone and cold, just like a cloud
Tears rained down like blossom flowers.
But then my name was called aloud,
My friends: “For you, we’ve searched for hours!”
And they were just as drunk as me!
But that’s the norm for hanami.

Where to
Party in
the Pink?
The Best Places to Enjoy
Hanami In Nagoya
Japan has got to be the only country in the world with forecast systems in
place for both some of the worst natural disasters imaginable, and flowers.
Meteorological agencies across the country rush to predict just when and
where the great pink blob will descend, so millions can plan on which days
to pull sickies in order to recover from hanami.
Anywhere else in the world, a ‘flower viewing’ party would sound a bit of a
bore-fest, but not in Japan. Travel itineraries on the internet spout endless
superlatives about the transient beauty of the blossoms, how important
they are in the Japanese psyche, and how you absolutely MUST visit in April
so as not to miss the ‘big pink’ (it’s not actually called that, I just made that
up). But us kids know that hanami isn’t about appreciating cherry blossoms.
It’s the time of year when hospital admittances for alcohol poisoning are at
their highest and sales of blue plastic sheets skyrocket. A million salarymen
can’t be wrong, and if you wish to join them in their merriment and madness, here are some of Nagoya’s prime spots.
Heiwa Park
The sakura Mecca of Nagoya, but I may be over-exaggerating. Over 2000
trees, with plenty of space to enjoy them and lots of hiding places to disappear when it all gets too much. Access: Motoyama Station (Meijo/Higashiyama subway lines), Exit 4, head up Nekogahora-Dori past Matsuzakaya.
Tsurumai Park
One of the less subdued places to do hanami – lamppost climbing has been
known to occur (followed by karaoke renditions from on high). Not for the
faint-hearted. 1200 trees. Access: Tsurumai Station, main exit (JR Chuo/Tsurumai subway lines).
Nagoya Castle(Meijo Park)
The 1600 or so blossom trees here really bring out the ferrite concrete of the
castle quite nicely. Watch out for the annual castle festival – it’s on during
most of the cherry blossom season. The trees are lit-up until late evening.
Access: Shiyakusho Station (Meijo subway line), Exit 7.
Higashiyama Park
There are actually different varieties of cherry blossom trees here, so they
bloom over a longer period of time. More hanami, anyone? The Spring Festival will run until early May. Access: Higashiyama Koen Station (Higashiyama
subway line), Exit 3.
Yamazaki River
Around 500 trees stretch along a couple of kilometers of river. Illuminated.
Yay! Access: Mizuho Undojo-Nishi Station (Sakura-dori subway line), Exit 2.

Hanami Fun Facts!
Spring has sprung. And in Japan, that means it
is time again to contemplate mono no aware,
the ephemeral and slightly melancholy nature
of being alive.
Apparently, this is best achieved through the
age-old tradition of sitting on blue polytarps,
passing around child-sized bottles of sake (by
which I mean the size of a human child, not a
size fit for one), and generally making as much
of an ass of yourself as possible in a crowded
public park. In a word: fantastic.
Cherry blossoms (sakura) are charged with
meaning. Their fragile and fleeting bloom has
been compared to a woman’s beauty, blossoming for a short period before withering
into old age.
The fighting men of Japan – soldiers, samurai
and gangsters – often used them as a symbol
of a life that was short but magnificent. Because the Japanese school year begins in April,
the sakura are also seen as a sign of beginning,
signaling a new stage in life.
Of course, most of this ancient symbolism has
been lost in the pursuit of a really excellent
party, but what the hey.
To help prepare for the deeper appreciation
of this perennial ritual – or maybe just to
feed you some useless trivia to impress your
friends with while waiting for your turn at
the enormous sake bottle – here are five fun
facts about hanami (cherry blossom viewing).

Enjoy!
1. When and how this whole hanami thing
got started is a mystery, but it has been going
on for a long time. Some say it started in the
Nara period (710-784), due to the encroaching
influence of the Chinese Tang Dynasty and
its established culture of flower appreciation.
Others argue it is a Japan-original, with 3rd
century hanami parties being mentioned in
the Nihon Shoki (Chronicles of Japan). Either
way, plum blossoms and wisteria were originally the flowers of note, with nobody giving a
hoot about sakura. However, like pretty much
everything else in traditional Japanese culture,
this all changed with the publication of The
Tale of Genji, which included a sakura-hanami
party scene. From then on, the word came to
be exclusively associated with parties under
cherry blossoms.
2. Whether or not hanami parties are indigenous to Japan, sakura trees sure aren’t. They
were imported to Japan from the Himalayas
and have been artificially hybridized for
centuries, resulting in around 305 distinct
varieties. Considered the most beautiful
sakura and genetically grafted so that all of
its flowers bloom at the same time, the somei
yoshino was perfected towards the end of the
Edo period. And yes, although they are called
“cherry blossoms” in English, actual cherries
come from an entirely different species of tree,
so don’t get your hopes up for free fruit.
3. To help manage the big sake bottles, people
are often seen drinking from masu, a square
wooden box-shaped cup usually with some
design etched in it. Masu were originally a
standardized measuring cup for counting rice,
said to contain exactly enough rice to feed a
working man for one day. 365 masu added up
to a koku, enough rice to feed someone for a
year; this was used as a measure of wealth in
feudal Japan.
4. Nowadays, the focus of the event has
changed, which resulted in the phrase hana
yori dango. It means being more interested in
the tasty and sweet foods of hanami parties
(dango) rather than wasting time staring at
the flowers (hana) and contemplating mono
no aware. Personally, I think this would be
better rendered as hana yori sake, but maybe
that’s just me.
5. If you’re undecided as to where to hold your
hanami party this year, Mt. Yoshino in Nara
prefecture is considered to be the most beautiful place in all of Japan for sakura. More than
100,000 sakura trees are planted in sequential
groves along the mountain, allowing for
staggered hanami as the trees slowly bloom.
Legendary poet Matsuo Basho was so struck
by the numinous beauty of Mt. Yoshino in
bloom that he refused to compose his customary haiku during his visit, saying that a human
being could never properly capture it in words.
Or maybe he was just too drunk, swept up in
the true spirit of hanami.

The Burlesque Show Shamhat Takes Place on April 23

One has little more to do than turn on the
television to realise that Japan loves a variety
show. Whether it’s singing, dancing or comedy,
variety light entertainment pretty much dominates the non-food based airwaves, which
is why CapriBlue’s Nagoya-based burlesque
show Shamhat is destined to be such a massive hit.
Okay, that sound you just heard was probably
your own brain going hnnnuuuhh? Because
when you hear the world ‘burlesque’ you
probably think of some seedy strip joint or
something, but you couldn’t be more wrong.
Laughably so.

You see, the word ‘burlesque’ actually derives
from the Italian burlesco or burla meaning a
joke or mockery, and the early English burlesque performances were parodies in the late
17th century, sending up Chaucer, Shakespeare
and the Graeco-Roman classics. As burlesque
arrived in the United States, to great popularity, it had metamorphosed into a variety show
format, but with a touch of female striptease
set to the increasingly popular Jazz swing
music.
But while it was the nudity that was grabbing
headlines, burlesque’s popularity would not
have been so great were it not for the bawdy
comedy; the skin bringing the punters in, the
laughs keeping them in their seats. Which is
why Japan’s burlesque scene is growing, and
at the forefront of the movement is Nagoya’s
very own Gigi D’Errico and his partner Asako
Takayanagi with their Jazz duo CapriBlue.
Classically trained musician D’Errico began
performing in his native Napoli at the tender
age of 7, turned professional at 14 and toured
the world with the Neapolitan orchestra. After
taking a job performing Canzone Napoletana
at Nagoya’s Italia Mura (Italian Village) in 2005,
he found himself falling in love with the city.

Alas, in 2008 the village closed down but,
rather than return to his homeland, D’Errico
stayed in his new home. It was somewhat
fortuitous that he did, as it was here that he
saw, playing the contrabass in the Central Aichi
Symphony Orchestra, Asako Takayanagi. He
was blown away.
So much so that he hunted her down and
persuaded her to form a duo, CapriBlue,
performing Belle Époque jazz and swing tunes.
Not wanting to stifle themselves playing the
same old jazz cafes and bars, they hit the road
finding unusual locations such as the famous
Kodaiji temple in Kyoto. And it was on that
very road that inspiration struck.
“I had been thinking of burlesque for some
time,” D’Errico told NagMag from his Nagoya
office, a room littered with evidence of a
lifetime on the stage. “The era of its greatest
influence, the music, it matched our style, but
I had no story. On the way back from Kyoto, it
came to me. I wrote it on the journey back to
Nagoya.”
That story came to be his first burlesque show,
Petit Café CapriBlue, a surreal tale in which the
clientele of the eponymous café are trapped in
time, perennially at three o’clock, tea time all
of the time. Through song, dance, by whatever
means necessary they try to advance time, but
to no avail, leaving them at the show’s ending,
still stuck.

The show itself is an intriguing mix of improvisation - the actors are essentially playing
themselves, reacting as they themselves would
in such a surreal situation - and hilarious songs,
performed by not one, but two orchestras, and
brought beautifully to life by Misao Yuchigawa,
choreographer for the Chunichi Dragons’
Cheerleaders. Although the show is in Japanese, it is in a natural, easy to understand tone,
and provides such a spectacle that it at times
transcends language. One such scene, without
wanting to give too much of the game away,
includes a Prisca Molotsi tribute to James
Bond, a giant cocktail glass and Scarlett James.
It promises to be worth the entrance fee alone.

With a name like Shamhat (a sacred prostitute
of ancient Greece who used her allure to
charm the wild Enkidu from a bestial state to
civilisation), of course themes of romance and
sex are never going to be far away. And it is
here that your eyebrows raise once more, and
you’re again thinking of the strip joint, imagining an audience of the dirty mac brigade of
lonely men with hairy palms and bad eyesight.
But it is a suggestion that D’Errico laughs off,
female audience from the previous show,
glamorously dressed as they would for any trip
NagMag wonders whether perhaps the photographer had a soft spot for the ladies, but
D’Errico corrects us, confirming that women
make up 80% of their audience.
“Japanese women love beauty. They bring
their husbands and their friends. They love the
clothes and they love glamour, and they love
to laugh. In the last show we had all types of
people. We had a 70 year-old lady and we had
the S&M model Mistress Hibiki. But people
really enjoy it because the story is hilarious
and surreal.
“It is the most unique event in Japan, and it is
the spirit of burlesque.”

The show was a roaring hit, packing the theatre. There are perhaps many reasons for the
success: the story, the local talent (including
friend of NagMag, Chris Glenn), the songs, but
perhaps the greatest pull was the Canadian
queen of burlesque herself, Scarlett James.
“Scarlett is just wonderful” enthuses D’Errico.
“In Japan burlesque is growing, but still underground. Most of the performers are go-go
dancers still, not real burlesque. With Scarlett
we play authentic burlesque.” And now that
authenticity is back, because the Petit Café is
returning for a reprisal in a new George Van
Horne co-directed show Shamhat.
Shamhat finds the café’s customers still
trapped in time, somehow catastrophically
shunted back to the court of Marie Antoinette.
As well as James, once again the stage is
littered with stars. You may recognise Pietro
Cristo from various Japanese TV dramas and
commercials. He plays the husband of guest
star Jazz vocalist Prisca Molotsi. Running the
show are the MCs: KouKouChan, the fluttering,
amorous keeper of time played by Japan’s
number one burlesque star and avant-garde
genius, Miss Caberetta; and Crissino, the man

Kyokushin Karate
Interested in Learning Karate in English?

It’s no surprise that many foreigners living in Nagoya have an interest in
learning some form of martial art or another, after all this is Japan. We
are living in a virtual mecca of martial art opportunities. The problem
is that most dojos in the area do not advertise, at least not in English.
No worries, I recently sat down with a world class Kyokushin karate
champion and instructor to discover what I could about learning this
fascinating and challenging art right here in town.
Within the word of martial arts Kyokushin is often referred to as “the
strongest karate”. The name means, “The ultimate truth”. Founded by
Korean-Japanese Masutasu Oyama, in 1964, kyokushin is a stand-up
fighting style that emphasizes full-contact fighting and intense training
methods. Sosai Oyama was born in Korea, but spent some time as a
child in China where he studied the southern Chinese form of Kempo
called, eighteen hands. Eventually, he moved to Japan where he
studied judo and Okinawan karate, eventually earning 4th degree black
belts in both arts. After years of intense training Sosai Oyama created
his own style, Kyokushin karate.
As a young child Hitoshi Kiyama began studying Kyokushin karate
and now as an adult his name is one that immediately inspires respect
within the realm of karate. Between the years of 1997 and 2003 Kiyamashihan collected such coveted titles as, World Champion (three times),
All Japan Champion (two times), and European Champion (once).
Currently, Kiyama-shihan is the head coach of the Japan National Team
preparing them for the upcoming World Championships.
When Kiyama-shihan is not winning championships or training other
future champions he spends his time teaching this fine art to regular
Joes, both adults and children. His dojos focus on etiquette, physical
conditioning, kata (forms), and kumite (sparring). For those daring folks
who want more, there are several kumite competitions held in Japan
and around the world each year. The atmosphere is friendly, yet traditional. So expect to train hard, but walk out of each class with a smile
(and perhaps a few bruises).
If you would like to watch a class before deciding to join, Kiyama-shihan
welcomes visitors at all of his dojos. There are three studios in Nagoya
conveniently located in Sakurayama, Chigusa, and Tsurumai. Incidentally, the classes at Tsurumai are taught by one of Kiyama-shihan’s
capable assistants, but instruction is available in English. Additionally,
the Tokai Championship tournament will be held in Nagoya on March
22nd. Some of the area’s best martial artists will be competing and the
tickets are reasonably priced.

Los Tacos
Big Tacos in Little Osu!

People in this country will often compliment
you on your ability to use chopsticks. That’s
all well and good. But in my opinion, the art
of stuffing food into your gob with your bare
hands is not only more natural, more impressive, more primal and more damn paleo…it’s
just, plain more fun. One of these days a local
is going to say something like “Daniel San, you
are really good at eating like a Cimmerian at a
roadside campfire, after a bloodthirsty battle
with a horde of murderous mountain trolls.”
And I’m just going to stare off into the distance
for a while as I chew, then, when you start to
think I didn’t even hear what you said, I’ll utter
in a deep, confident tone, “I know”.
If you’re like me and you’ve ever felt the need
for a spot of of hand-held Mexican fare to get
you through the week, then you may have
on occasion dropped in at one of the town’s
staple light dining institutions, the original Los
Tacos, on the outskirts of Sakae. You may have
also noticed that it’s not there anymore. This
is, indeed, a case of Lost Tacos. While it’s yet to
be seen whether Sakae will ever recover from
this grievous blow, today we’re going to focus
on the upside of the tale - and that, friends,
is what Osu has gained in the process. Yes,
much like a Chinese girl in an 80’s Kurt Russell
movie, Los Tacos has been bundled up and
transplanted to a new, and happening, and
much more colorful part of town.
Los Tacos was conceived by a couple of Japanese surfers, whose adventures some years
back found them in Baja, Mexico. There, they
discovered their love for finding their own
waves went hand-in-hand with a passion for
Mexican cafe-style eating. Soft-shell tacos with
your choice of filling, topped with a few fresh
salads, deep-fried cheese quesadillas, maybe
a burrito to top it all off, and some tortilla
soup. Eating like this will get you far in life. Or
at least, outside the whitewater, to where the
next set’s breaking. The new location, just down the side-street
between Osu Kannon temple and Yoshinoya
on Osu Dori, has already become a popular
point of call for local foot traffic. Inside there’s

a 5-seater counter, and two high-stool tables
seating 4 each. The layout is neat and simple,
with easy-on-the-eyes, soft-color So-Cal artwork and decor. And cacti. Salsa music plays
in the background, and Yajima San churns
out orders in quick succession. The menu is
basically the same as reliable fare it’s always
been: Tacos, burritos, taco rice, deep-fried quesadillas, and a bunch of side-orders, including
salads and empanadas. New additions to the
line-up include a guacamole burrito(which
is fantastic), and veggie tacos featuring a
generous helping of salsa sauce, garnished
with coriander. The tomato-based soups at Los
Tacos are a rare delight in Japan. The tortilla
soup is very popular, although my favorite
is the seafood version. There’s an extensive
drink menu, with not only the usual beers,
but also Mexican brews like Tecate and Sol.
They have all the tequila, rum, and Campari
cocktails, as well as rum and tequila shots. You
can also wash your meal or snack down with
a selection from an extensive soft-drink menu
that includes juices such as guava, mango and
passion fruit. Los Tacos is a great place to drop in for a casual
tide-you-over, or a full sit down pig-out. Open
from 11:30 daily, last order is 21:30, and they’re
closed Wednesdays. The food is great, prices
are very reasonable, and there are no chopsticks. Because, really, who needs chopsticks
when you’ve found Los Tacos?

Drink and Play at Fushimi’s Retro Video Game Lounge

Theme bars are the rage all over, and Nagoya
is no stranger to the novelty. We’ve got a bar
dedicated to the band KISS, more than a few
for fans of Gundam and any number of ones
where you can step back in time to visit the
50s or even the disco age. If you’ve got a kink
or itch, there’s probably a bar for you. Even
for video gamers, a group who traditionally
approach socialization only through vulgar
insults hurled across a high-speed internet
connection.
There was a time before online took hold,
before the Big 3 started filching their customer
base with DLC and micropayments. A time
when story was more important than graphics
(because they sucked), and you didn’t need
the web to play two players (just a second
controller). And to revisit this Golden Age of
Gaming, you just have to visit Nagoya’s newest
theme bar, Critical*Hit.
Owner and operator Alex “call me Al” Fraioli
got inspiration for his bar by visiting Genesis,
a retro gaming bar in Ichinomiya, and even
studied under the master there before opening his doors last November. Three months of
renovation and cleaning made the space into
a gamer’s paradise. The black and red aesthetic
is comfortable to the eyes, while the seating
is comfortable to your rear; which is a good
thing, because with the extensive selection of
old school games you’re going to be doing a
lot of sitting.

“I wanted it to be a nice bar with video games
in it”, says Al. “Customers can come for the
ambiance and stay for the games.”
And Al knows video games; he’s got the collection to prove it. A hardcore gamer for 24 years,
he’s got nearly every console made since the
original Nintendo ready to play, both in English and Japanese. Just a quick glance around
the room and you’ll see all the greats: SNES,
, Gameboy, Sega Genesis and even the Wii.
However, according to Al, the most popular
with his customers is the N64, probably due
to classic games such as Mario Kart 64 and
the fact that up to 4 players can drive drunk
around the track at the same time.
If you want to enjoy their massive game
library, you only have to purchase two drinks
to play all you want. The menu is normal fare,
cold beer, a well-stocked list of mixers and
even a few original cocktails. If you game
better when drunk, you should brave a
Ganondorf’s Estate Tax, a mix of absinthe, Red
Bull, grenadine and lime. It’s an original brew
that Al confesses he “made on the fly” when a
customer pressed him for something new.
Critical*Hit is open every day except Mondays
from 5pm until 1am. But Al admits that
he’s been known to stay open later especially when there are customers playing or he
himself is in the middle of an epic session of
Dragon Quest (his favorite series). If you find
yourself in the middle of a game but have to
catch the last train, don’t worry about losing
your progress. C*H offers free memory service,
so you can come back and finally defeat
Mother Brain next time.
Critical*Hit also hosts a number of tournaments every month. The most popular to
date is the Street Fighter 2 tourney, which
participants can enter for ¥1000, which comes
with a free drink, and play several rounds of
multiple versions of the game including Turbo
and Super for a ¥5000 gift voucher. They are
also available for private parties, and it’s the
perfect place for a birthday party that would
make 10 year old you very jealous.
To get to Critical*Hit, take the Higashiyama or
Tsurumai subway lines to Fushimi station, take
exit #7 and walk straight along Hirokoji-doori.
Take the first left and the the next right. On
the left, next to a Chinese restaurant, you’ll see
the sign for Critical*Hit. Head downstairs and
say hi to Al.
