About Amelia Earhart This year marks the 112th anniversary of Amelia Earhart’s birthday and the 81st anniversary of her being the first woman to fly across the Atlantic. She was born July 24, 1897 in her grandparents’ Atchison home at 223 N. Terrace. On June 1, 1937, Earhart and navigator Fred Noonan departed from Miami to attempt a circumnavigational flight. They made stops in South America, Africa, the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. With just 7,000 miles left to complete their journey, they vanished over the Pacific Ocean on July 2, 1937, becoming one of the great mysteries of our time. Buy a Button! Souvenir festival buttons are available for a $1 donation at the Chamber of Commerce, 200 S. 10th, and at most bank locations in Atchison.
