“We proclaim Jesus as Lord and ourselves as servants for His sake.”

Fifth Sunday of Lent
From the Pastor’s Desk ...
Thanks again to one and all for the warm
welcome I’m receiving. I am grateful for the many
cards, letters and kind words that have been sent
my way.
To let you know a little about me…I was born in
Detroit on September 24, 1959 to Bob and Trudy
Fisher. I attended Epiphany Grade School in
Detroit and St. Bede Elementary in Southfield.
After graduating from U of D Jesuit High, I went on
to the University of Michigan for a year and then
completed my degree in business and computers
at the University of Detroit. I worked for the
Catholic Youth Organization in the Camp
Department and then as happens to many in my
generation of priests, heard the call to the
diocesan priesthood. Graduating from Sacred
Heart Major Seminary in 1992, I was ordained and
then assigned to Our Lady Star of the Sea Parish,
Grosse Pointe Woods. In 1995, Cardinal Maida
sent me to the Vocation Office where I served until
July of 2000. My pastorates have been at St.
Angela in Roseville, followed in 2003, by a move to
St. Lawrence in Utica. As of March 22, of course,
here at the National Shrine of the Little Flower. I
am the oldest of four, having two married sisters
and one single brother. I also have two nieces
and two nephews.
In addition to pastoral responsibilities here at
the Shrine, I serve as a formation advisor to
seminarians at Sacred Heart Major Seminary, sit on
the Catholic Schools Advisory Board as well as the
Board of Directors of the Catholic Youth
Organization.
In today’s Gospel reading, we hear the story of
Lazarus being raised from the dead. I am always
struck by the line that reads, “When Jesus saw her
weeping and the Jews who had come with her
weeping, he became perturbed and deeply

Covenant House Clothing Closet Needs Help
We really need help in our clothing closet and donations garage!
I mean we REALLY
need help! If your group, or even individual members of the group are willing to help us out
please contact me immediately!
Covenant House Michigan is a nonprofit, faith-based homeless
shelter and at-risk programs for youth age 16-22. Youth homelessness
is a face of homelessness that many people have no idea
exists. Many have aged-out of foster care with nowhere to go,
others have been abandoned, neglected or abused. Some have
made poor life choices, and now want to get their lives back on
track. Covenant House Michigan has helped more than 57,000
youth since opening in Detroit over 16 years ago. We rely on the wider community to help
advocate and support the services we provide these youth. Please check out our website to
learn more about the mission of Covenant House Michigan:
http://www.covenanthousemi.org/. You can also "like" us on facebook as a way to advocate
and connect.

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops' Committee on Migration,
will be in Nogales, Arizona, April 1, to tour the U.S.-Mexico border and
celebrate Mass on behalf of the almost 6,000 migrants who have
died in the U.S. desert since 1998.
The purpose of the trip is to highlight the human suffering caused
by a broken immigration system, an aspect of the national
immigration debate too often ignored. It is reminiscent of the journey Pope Francis made to
the Italian island of Lampedusa to remember African migrants who died attempting to reach
Europe. During that trip, Pope Francis spoke about the "globalization of indifference" toward
migrants and decried the "throwaway culture" that disposes of human beings in the pursuit of
wealth.
How we can participate as we let the Holy Spirit change our hearts:
•
Learn more about the issue at www.justiceforimmigrants.org
•
Pray for our Catholic Bishops and those who work for justice in regards to Migration
•
When enjoying fresh fruits, vegetables, chicken, and other products on our tables, pray
for those who do the hard labor, low paying work of the fields and chicken plants
•
Join the Ignatian Solidarity Network's social media "Thunderclap" to spread the message
far and wide about the Bishops' effort and take part in an advocacy action alert.
•

Bishops Pastoral letter of 2003 on immigration needs and reforms

troubled, and said, “Where have you laid him?” They said to him, “Sir, come and
see.” And Jesus wept.” Jesus is agitated in spirit and deeply moved. Without
setting aside his divinity, his humanity comes through loud and clear: He weeps.
Jesus feels the terrible sense of loss that humans feel when they lose a loved one.
The emphasis on the fact that Lazarus has been dead for four days seems to say,
“No one can undo death.” Jesus knows the sorrow that comes from the death of
sin as well as physical death. He calls us forth out of the tomb of sin to experience
new life, His life. May we never forget this grace that He offers each of us.
Have a great week!

Save a Baby's Life
The National Shrine Ladies Guild invites you to spiritually
adopt a baby as an added spiritual gift in preparation for our
yearly baby shower. Say this prayer every day for the next six
months to save a baby's life.
Jesus,Mary And Joseph, I Love You Very Much.
I Beg You To Spare The Life Of The Unborn Baby
That I Have Spiritually Adopted Who Is In Danger Of Abortion.
(Name Your Baby)
Please pray. This baby is counting on you. If you did not cut this
prayer out last month please do it now. Put the prayer somewhere where you will see it
daily. Today we'll tell you about MONTH THREE in the life of your baby. In the Fall the Ladies
Guild will sponsor a baby shower. The gifts you bring will be for "your baby".
MONTH THREE - "I'm three inches and I can suck my thumb now!"
The baby now sleeps and awakens. Fingernails and toenails form and he already has his
own unique set of fingerprints. He breathes amniotic fluid to help develop and strengthen
the respiratory system, but he gets oxygen he needs through the umbilical cord. He can also
squint, swallow and move his tongue. In fact early this month - at week 9 - he began to suck
his thumb.

Mass Intentions
Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration
"O my Lord and Redeemer, grant that I may understand
the deep intimate ties that bind You to us, whom You have
redeemed."
"Jesus strongly affirms that there is no redemption, no
supernatural life, no grace-life for one who does not live in
Him, who is not grafted onto Him. ...This spiritual engrafting, an
accomplished fact, was made possible for all men by Christ's
death on the Cross, and it became effective for each one of
us at the time of our Baptism. Christ grafted us into Himself at
the cost of His precious Blood. Therefore, we "are" in Him, but
He insists further that we "abide" in Him and bring forth fruit.
...We must show our gratitude for the immense gift we have
received by endeavoring to become more and more firmly
grafted into Christ. We must "live" this union with Christ,
making Him the center, the sun of our interior life. Christ
wished to show us that our life in Him requires our personal
collaboration with Him, that we are to employ all our strength,
our mind, our will, and our heart that we may live in Him and
by Him. The more we try to abide in Christ, the deeper our
little branch will grow into Him, because it will be nourished
more abundantly by the sap of grace. ...That is why, O
eternal, most high Trinity, in a sublime transport of love for Your
creature, seeing that this tree could produce only fruits of
death because it was separated from You, who are Life, You
gave it a remedy with that very same love by which You had
created it, grafting Your Deity into the dead tree of our
humanity. O sweet, gently grafting! ...Who constrained You
to do this, to give back life to it, You who have been
offended so many times by Your creature?
Love alone,
whence by this grafting death is dissolved."
- Divine Intimacy/St.Catherine of Siena

Holy Saturday cleaning of the adoration chapel for
Easter. Please call me if you are able to help. We do a more

great help. Supplies will be provided. It is wonderful to make
the chapel as beautiful as we can for our Lord and for those
who will visit at Easter and after.

Life Matters
In today’s Gospel, we see through the raising of Lazarus the
power Christ has over death. Through His cross, he has conquered
death. We know that only through Christ, will our culture of death be
changed. As Christ’s foot soldiers, we can change the culture. Your
actions have made a difference:

Grade School Happenings
Fourth Grade
In addition to all of our focus on “Following in Jesus’ Footsteps” during this Lenten season,
we have spent a great deal of time creating CD’S detailing the Ten Commandments. The
students are also working hard on skits that carry the message of the 8th commandment: Thou
shall not bear false witness against your neighbors.
Gossip falls under the Eighth
Commandment, and many discussions have explored how damaging it can be to
relationships.
Writing historical fiction is a tall order, but that’s just what we’ve done as a cross-curricular
project in social studies and language arts. We are submitting original stories on the Wright
Brothers to the Henry Ford National Writing Competition. Last year our fourth grade students participated in the contest
and we had two winners! Together we studied the genre, did historical research, took notes, created a bibliography, and
then tackled the task of turning factual information into a piece of creative writing!
Fractions are the focus of math. We used our school iPads and a fun game called Pizza Fractions to hone our skills
manipulating and calculating equivalent fractions, simplest forms, improper fractions and mixed numbers. From here we
move to finding least common denominators and adding and subtracting like and unlike fractions. We’ll also unlock the
secrets of multiplying and dividing fractions too!
In science, we have been looking carefully at the formation of fossils. Working hand in hand with fossils and fossil fuels.
Students are debating the pros and cons of conservation of petroleum and supporting their opinions!
We are about to begin our persuasive essays. After brainstorming, students will choose a topic that they are
passionate about, whether it is changing the color of their bedroom or getting a new puppy. We’ll follow The Writing
Process and also incorporate the Six Traits of Writing (ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, and
conventions) into the essays.
It’s easy to see that the busiest and most exciting place in the entire metro area is Shrine Catholic fourth grade! Each
day is filled with new concepts and skills to be mastered. We’ve also discovered that being a good Catholic also makes
you a great citizen. We are practicing our faith and Core Democratic Values by partnering with Mary’s Children Center
for Brain-Injured Children. We have become pen pals to these children and even sent them a You Tube video of ourselves
doing an ‘improv’ recorder performance. Our new friends are excited to see the great things happening at Shrine
Catholic.

National Shrine Gift Shop – New Item
The National Shrine Gift Shop just received a new National Shrine Rosary item. It depicts several of the
National Shrine Tower features, such as the front and back of the tower and St. Thérèse holding roses. It
was designed especially for our church by the Ghirelli company.
The rosary beads are fire-polished Bohemian beads made of glass, with a Crystal Aurora Borealis
effect. The Crucifix and Centerpiece are in a silver-plated finish. The Ghirelli brand plate authenticates the
original custom design and ensures the rosary is made in Italy. The price of the rosary is $25.

Needed – Wedding Rehearsal Coordinators
Everyone loves a good wedding. Now you can be part of making the ceremony a momentous event. The
Wedding Rehearsal Coordinators at Shrine walk couples and their wedding parties through each part of the
wedding ceremony giving them the opportunity to practice and ask questions. Each person may do 1-2
rehearsals/weddings per month from May to October; other months will be less frequent. No weddings are
held during Advent or Lent. These rehearsals are typically scheduled on Thursday and Friday evenings; usually
1 hour is allowed for each rehearsal. You will also be asked to be present on the day of the ceremony to
assist the wedding party in the processional. If you would be interested in becoming a rehearsal coordinator,
please contact Laura Dysarz at 248.588,1999.
Thank You
Kelly, Mike, the Kalpins and I, would like to extend the warmest of all heartfelt thank yous to the
entire community. There is no way that we can communicate how thankful we are for the love,
prayers, dinners, help, and support that you have continually showed us throughout Kathy’s illness
and recent passing.
It is remarkable, but not surprising, that the community has exactly replicated Kathy’s character in
the love and care you have all shown. Kathy often was overwhelmed with the love you showed her
and truly appreciated the numerous expressions of care that were extended. While she wanted to
personally thank each and every one of you, even Kathy couldn’t pull that off. Please know that she
was always aware just how special the Shrine community is and how blessed we are to be a part of it.
May God bless you and your families.

The Church Witnesses to the Truth About
Marriage
“Marriage has come to us as a gift of God in establishing the order
of nature. The Catholic community in southeast Michigan will continue to give witness to the truth that marriage is
between one man and one woman, which is the foundation for the flourishing of society.” - Archbishop Allen H. Vigneron,
March 21, 2014
Reversing the will of Michigan voters, a federal judge recently struck down Michigan law confirming the truth that
marriage is an institution between one man and one woman. This decision is part of an ongoing legal process by which
same-sex couples can be “married” in our state.
Archbishop Vigneron and Michigan’s diocesan bishops have come to the defense of traditional marriage, speaking
collectively through the Michigan Catholic Conference, the Church’s public policy voice in the state. As the case
continues to move through the courts, the bishops have emphasized their opposition to legislatively or legally redefining
marriage, while stressing that “it is necessary to state clearly that persons with same-sex attraction should not be judged,
but rather accepted with respect, compassion and sensitivity”
To learn more, visit the Michigan Catholic Conference online at www.micatholic.org.
Michigan Bishops Defend God-Given Gift of Marriage
Reacting to a decision by a federal judge to overturn the Michigan Marriage Amendment, passed by Michigan voters
in 2004, Archbishop Allen Vigneron said the institution of marriage “has come to us as a gift of God in establishing the order
of nature.”
While stressing that we are called to be respectful, compassionate and sensitive to those with same-sex attraction,
Archbishop Vigneron and the bishops of Michigan have reaffirmed their support for traditional marriage for the sake of the
common good.
To learn more, visit the Michigan Catholic Conference, the public policy voice for the Church in Michigan, at
www.micatholic.org.
Michigan Bishops Defend Marriage Amendment
The seven archdiocesan Catholic bishops in the State of Michigan released the following statement after U.S. District
Judge Bernard Friedman issued a ruling on March 21 that overturns the 2004 voter approved Michigan Marriage
Amendment. The bishops wrote collectively under the name of the Michigan Catholic Conference, the official public
policy voice of the Catholic Church in this state:
“Marriage is and can only ever be a unique relationship solely between one man and one woman,
regardless of the decision of a judge or future electoral vote. Nature itself, not society, religion or government,
created marriage. Nature, the very essence of humanity as understood through historical experience and reason,
is the arbiter of marriage, and we uphold this truth for the sake of the common good. The biological realities of
male and female and the complementarity they each bring to marriage uniquely allows for the procreation of
children.
“Every child has the right to both a mother and a father and, indeed, every child does have lineage to both.
We recognize not every child has the opportunity to grow in this environment, and we pray for those single
mothers and fathers who labor each day to care for their children at times amid great challenges and difficulties.
They deserve our constant support and encouragement.
“[The] decision from federal district court Judge Bernard Friedman to redefine the institution of marriage by
declaring Michigan’s Marriage Amendment unconstitutional strikes at the very essence of family, community and
human nature. In effect, this decision advances a misunderstanding of marriage, and mistakenly proposes that
marriage is an emotional arrangement that can simply be redefined to accommodate the dictates of culture
and the wants of adults. Judge Friedman’s ruling that also finds unconstitutional the state’s adoption law is
equally of grave concern.
“As this case will likely move forward through the courts, it is necessary to state clearly that persons with
same-sex attraction should not be judged, but rather accepted with respect, compassion and sensitivity. We
rejoice with those brothers and sisters in Christ living with same sex attraction who have found great freedom
through Jesus' call to chastity communicated through the Church. We equally encourage those who are
struggling in good conscience to live in harmony with the Church’s teaching about sexuality, along with their
families, to continue praying and to continue seeking the Lord with the help and guidance of the Church.
“Going forward, we, the Catholic bishops of this state, working through the Michigan Catholic Conference,
will collaborate with those who are upholding Michigan’s Marriage Amendment and adoption statute and will
assist to the greatest extent possible efforts to appeal Judge Friedman’s most regrettable ruling.”

Notice To All Extraordinary Ministers Of Holy Communion
Located at the Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion Sign in Table are EARLY SIGN UP SHEETS for the
Easter Weekend Services.
Please, as you are attending Mass during the next few weekends, please select a location to serve while
attending the service of your choice.
Also, whether or not you have signed up early, please check with the Coordinator at the service you
attend to either let the Coordinator know you are present or to volunteer to serve at that Service.
We always have many visitors during this season; therefore we will need more Ministers at each Service than
normal.
Based upon the past few years, we have a large number of people attending the 12:30 pm Mass and a
shortage of Ministers, therefore, if at all possible please consider this Mass – even if serving two Masses.
So, please come forward to serve.
Free copy of Janet Smith’s “Contraception – Why Not” CD
available in racks at all doors.
As Christopher West explained in his presentation here at Shrine, God has placed a deep desire for
something in all human beings. That desire points to God’s design. In the design for human sexuality, God
created male and female and intended their union as a sign pointing to man’s ultimate destiny: union with
God in Heaven. Popular culture has distorted that design and has been feeding on a “fast-food diet” of
indulgence and immediate gratification. Similar to eating junk food, consumption of disoriented ideas of sex
(pornography, contraception, etc.) can also be destructive. Janet Smith’s CD explains some basic facts
about contraception and their impact on marriages, women’s health, world population and the environment.
Her talk blends science and common sense to show why contraception is not in God’s design. Please pick up
your copy of this talk and pass it along to your family and friends.

D.T.P.S.
The story of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead has so many hidden teachings that are often lost due
to the powerful central story of resurrection. One that I would like to look at briefly is the perfect prayer
that Mary and Martha sent with those messengers at the beginning of the passage. The two knew how
much Jesus loved Lazarus (and the two of them as well) and so had total and complete confidence in
him to do the best thing for all of them. Their message was pure and simple; it said “Lord, the man you
love is ill”. This message didn’t beg, it didn’t urge, it didn’t dictate, it was simply a perfect prayer putting
their unlimited confidence in Jesus.
What does it mean to have unlimited confidence in him? Two things come to mind quickly. The first is
learning to have complete confidence in ALL of the Church’s teachings on faith and morality. That
means we can NOT pick and choose which doctrinal teachings we want to believe. We must trust and
understand that even though there have been imperfect popes and bishops, no church doctrines have
ever been changed. Secondly, we must learn to trust God through the use of the sacrament of
reconciliation. The church tells us we should not receive communion with mortal sin on our souls.
This week I challenge you to learn to trust Jesus with unlimited confidence by either looking into that
one church teaching that we find difficult to swallow and really learn what the church teaches and why,
OR review what the church teaches about mortal sin and confession and seek forgiveness before the
joyous Easter celebration so we may enter more joyfully into the joy of his resurrection.
In Christ, Deacon Tom
