VOLUNTEER
OUR BOOMTOWN BOSSIER
FAMILY
By: Casey Lowe
Team Member
Engagement Specialist,
L’Auberge Baton Rouge
Dave Harris
Glennie Shyne
R
eading is something that a lot of us take for granted.
Reading street signs, the back of a cereal box, or even
these sentences are simple everyday occurrences for many of
us. Unfortunately, literacy isn’t something that everyone can take
for granted, and that’s where Adult Literacy Advocates and Dave
Harris come in to help.
I
t is a well-known and widely accepted fact that team members here at Boomtown
Bossier consider one other as family. EVS Supervisor Glennie Shyne has worked
at Boomtown for 18 years and is considered part of the family to many. And when
she found out that one of her fellow team members became extremely ill, she did
what family does and came right to the rescue.
Dave stumbled upon Adult Literacy Advocates by accident. When
Mickey Parenton, Senior Vice President and General Manager,
asked the VPs and directors to get involved with the community,
Dave was referred by a friend to the ALA – and he’s been hooked
ever since. As a member of their Board of Trustees, Dave
volunteers 6-8 hours of his time each month, discussing the organization’s progress and planning its 3 main fundraising events
– the Golf Fundraiser, the Scrabble Challenge, and the Author’s Event, which features a local author.
In an effort to help the team member and her family maintain stability, Glennie
thought of a wristband fundraiser that would help tremendously with medical
expenses, food and toiletries. She was happy to head the fundraiser, among other
things, such as counseling and praying with the team member’s family.
“I didn’t do it for any reward. I did this from my heart, and because I believe that you
receive your blessings by being a blessing to others,” Glennie said, while helping her
(short-handed) team clean. “And I wouldn’t change a thing.”
Dave has been lucky to be able to involve L’Auberge Baton Rouge is his volunteer work. L’Auberge was a proud sponsor in 2013,
and has hosted the Scrabble Tournament for the past 2 years. At their last Author’s Event, Gary Stewart, an Elite my choice
member at L’Auberge and author of the book “The Most Dangerous Animal of All,” was invited to speak.
When working closely with team members for as long as Glennie has, building
caring relationships is crucial and almost inevitable.
Dave’s favorite part about his work with ALA is watching the students learn to read and write. Volunteer teachers from East
Baton Rouge Parish come in to teach, and the money from the fundraising events provides them with state-of-the-art teaching
materials. Once a year, 3-4 students are asked to come forward and speak about what ALA has done for them. From learning
how to read street signs in downtown Baton Rouge, to earning their GED’s so that they can provide a better life for their families,
these students show that the ALA really makes a difference in their lives. Dave said, “It’s great to take someone less fortunate
and make them into a productive citizen.”

ietra Cunningham knows exactly what Pinnacle Cares stands for. When Dietra
was working at Pinnacle’s President Casino property in St. Louis, her family
suffered a bad house fire and all their belongings were destroyed. Pinnacle’s
Team Member Assistance Fund stepped in and helped Dietra’s family get back on
their feet.

Shemorell Ross
She was so inspired and thankful for this help, she wanted to help give back to
the community. She spends countless hours conducting charitable drives for her
church. In the fall she collects coats from team members to donate to the less
fortunate in the wintertime.
S
hemorell Ross, Beverage Sever, surprised us all when we heard about how she
brings our value Care to life outside of work. For months she saved all of the
table game chips that she earned in tips in hopes of saving up enough money to host
a dinner to feed the homeless. Staying true to her goal, Shemorell did just that. She
partnered with the Hub Ministry and raised enough money to feed 150 people. She
rallied up her family members to help contribute to the cause and asked they help
support her by serving the food.
She has a big heart and is always nice to all of her fellow team members regardless
of their position. This great attitude towards all is also shown in Dietra’s charitable work at her church and reflects the true spirit
of Pinnacle’s values and its team members.
Shemorell is a very sweet young lady who wants to make a difference. She continues
to live in our value of Care and is currently saving up again so she can make another
memorable impact on those less fortunate.

T
he Security team at Belterra Park is very involved in all of
the volunteer opportunities that we offer with our Belterra
Park Cares program. Aside from this, Security leaders wanted
to do even more by sharing a great team building opportunity
outside of work. Supporting a great cause is something that they
all found interest in.
M
y first cat was given to me when I was 21 years old by my
wife, Kerry,” said Butch. “Windy was her name and I’ve
loved cats ever since. They give unconditional love but they are
very independent.”
Butch and Kerry took their love of cats to the next level when they
moved to the country after Hurricane Katrina. “There were lots
of stray cats around and I knew we needed to help take care of
them. They needed to be spayed and neutered.” From there, he
found out about Dr. Joe Stark and the Hobo Hotel for Cats in Lake
Charles. “We started bringing cats and kittens to the veterinarian
to get spayed and neutered. Then the vet’s office would get them
healthy and bring them to the Hobo Hotel where the cats could
be adopted.”
This past June, Security Shift Managers Patrick Flaherty, John
Dolan and Security Manager Jason Whitaker, along with a group
of Security Shift Managers, banded together to participate
in the 6th Annual FOP Lodge 33 Golf Outing to help support
the Children’s Hospital Liver Team. The group found that they
all shared the same support for local law enforcement and of
course a love for golfing!
All of the proceeds that they raised from the outing went towards
helping children who await or have received liver transplant. The
road to recovery for these children is a tough one, and with the
help of events, such as the golf outing doctors, and nurses are
able to buy toys and games for the children to help brighten their
spirits during their stay at Children’s Hospital.
Lake Charles’ Hobo Hotel for Cats is a no-kill shelter for cats and kittens that was founded in 1999. They handle rescues,
adoptions, education about pet care and promote spaying and neutering. Hobo Hotel also has a monthly newsletter they send
out and Butch is able to find pictures of “his” cats that he helped. To date, he has rescued at least 50 cats.
“Cats are one of my passions,” said Butch. “We’re doing our part. We take responsibility by caring for them and getting them to
Hobo Hotel so that the cats can find good homes.”
“We thought this was a good way to bond as a leadership
group while contributing back to our community. We hope to
continue this next year and make it an annual event for our
team,” said Jason Whitaker.
Butch and Kerry are currently fostering 14 cats. “It’s a big expense but we love them all,” Butch said with a smile.

Victor Arredon
By: Jason Brendel

W
hen it comes to giving back and helping the community, security officer Victor
Arredon is no stranger. Victor took it upon himself to help the homeless in the
St. Louis downtown area. During the harsh winter, he started going to the Larry Rice
Shelter to hand out food and water he purchased to the homeless once a week during
his off time. His genuine care and positivity not only impacted those in need, but has
also motivated those around him to join his initiative to help out the community. He
now has a group of team members who go with him and help him with his passion
of doing the right thing. Victor’s son was influenced by his father and has joined him
many times. Victor was recognized in April as one of River City’s Living Our Values
winners for his work in the community. Victor is the essence of Care and is making
a difference in our city!

EXEMPLIFYING CARE
THROUGHOUT NEW ORLEANS
RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS
IN VICKSBURG

Internal Communication

Ameristar Vicksburg
Eric Free
I
n April of this year, EVS Attendant Eric Free was selected as one of Ameristar
Vicksburg’s monthly Living Our Values winners for his consistent display
of care and compassion for his fellow team members. It is no surprise that
this level of care and compassion flows out into the local community through
volunteer service as well.
Eric Free got involved with XIII Dreamz (13 Dreamz), a Mississippi-based
community outreach organization, a couple of years ago after learning of the
group from a friend. The organization believes in “trying to inspire the world
to become a better place through random acts of kindness and community
support to assist those in need and be a positive example to our youth through
our deeds and actions.” This has included holding car washes to raise money
for veterans, passing out Easter baskets to community children, and various
other activities.
However, since he is typically working while most of the group’s events are
taking place, Eric decided to branch out on his own to do something for the
community on his off days. This past Easter, Eric, along with his wife and
children, created Easter baskets filled with candy, bubbles, toys, and other
Easter-related items to pass out to children whose parents are not present in
their lives for various reasons such as death or incarceration. He also took Easter baskets to seniors in nursing homes so that
they may have something to share with their grandchildren when they came to visit.
A
t Boomtown New Orleans, giving back to the community is a part of our culture, values, and most importantly, a part
of each one of our team members. Wendell Wright, Slot Attendant is a prime example of Pinnacle Entertainment’s core
value CARE.
Wendell is the founder of Every Life Matters (ELM), a non-profit organization whose mission is to help homelessness in the
Greater New Orleans area. With hot meals prepared, Wendell and his team searched for the homeless under the bridges and in
the nooks and crannies of the city. The meals he serves are hearty New Orleans dishes that are sure to give a sense of comfort
to these individuals.
Eric is hoping to do the same kind of thing for children in the community for the Christmas holiday season and has gathered
friends in the Vicksburg community and surrounding areas to join his cause.
Wendell and his rotating team of volunteers believe that everyone should be given the basic necessities in life, whether its food
to fuel them, water to replenish them, or a smile that will brighten their day.
“For me, it’s all about the smiles,” Eric said. “I love seeing the kids light up and seeing how happy it makes them.”
Wendell’s motto is, “If you’re blessed, be a blessing.” Boomtown New Orleans is proud to have team members who are committed
to help others live their best life!

We Care
Our value Care is at the heart of who we are as a company. Whether
it’s through financial donations or spending time volunteering, our
team members show care and compassion for helping others live their
best lives.
Caring for Senior Citizens
Ameristar Council Bluffs team members
volunteered to help with “Fun to Be Fit”, a senior
health assessment hosted by the Council Bluffs
Senior Center to help identify opportunities
to improve the overall health and wellness of
seniors in the community.
Spreading Love Through Food
Earlier this year, 21 team members volunteered
at The Shepherd’s Market, one of L’Auberge Baton
Rouge’s local charities for the 2015 Pinnacle
Cares Giving Campaign. The Shepherd’s Market is
a local food pantry that serves over 400 families
a month. Our L’Auberge Cares team regularly
volunteers at the pantry, unloading and
sorting food items. This visit to the market was
particularly special, because our team members
surprised the organization with a check for
$1,000 from the Pinnacle Fund! The Shepherd’s
Market was extremely appreciative of both the
monetary gift and the Care our team members
showed in volunteering their time to help out.
Supporting Our Furry Friends
Ameristar Vicksburg team members donated
their time to help pack gourmet dog treats made
by Ameristar Pastry Chef Nelson Gonzalez. These
delicious treats for our canine friends were sold in
downtown Vicksburg during the annual Dog Days
of Summer to benefit PAWS Rescue, a local animal
rescue.
Proud to Serve the Community
A group of 40 Boomtown New Orleans team
members and their families took part in the K10
Citywide Day of Service, painting Martin Behrman
Charter School in historic Algiers to mark the 10th
anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. The Charter
School was founded in December 2005, three
months after the storm, to serve New Orleans
residents who had returned to the city.
Donating our time and helping our community is a part of our
culture and is one great way we live our value of Care.
Beautifying Downtown
Belterra team members joined Vevay Main Street
to help beautify downtown Vevay, Indiana.
Volunteers cleaned windows, swept sidewalks,
picked up trash and painted curbs. Donating their
time and helping their community is a part of our
culture and is one great way we live our value
of Care.

W
e’ve all heard the stories about how pets can improve the overall health and wellbeing of their owners. L’Auberge Lake
Charles Advertising Specialist Taylor Bradley knows all too well the joy her dog brings and decided to share June, a
Standard Poodle, with our community by volunteering with Dr. Dogs.
Belterra Casino Resort
B
elterra Casino Resort has many caring team members
throughout our property, but Chasity Young, Amanda
Vann and Casey Wilson truly epitomize this value. These
amazing ladies have taken this value to a whole new level and
are helping change lives in our surrounding communities.
This local organization is made up of lovable canines and their owners who receive special training and certifications to prepare
them for providing great community service to people of all ages who might just need a little cheering up.
“Dr. Dogs is a unique way for me to give back to my community and to spend extra time with my dog, June. She loves story time
with children at the library and visiting the elderly at local nursing homes,” said Taylor.
With a joint passion for cancer awareness and the children
this disease affects, these three ladies were inspired to start
their own not-for-profit charity. In January, 2014, they officially
started H.O.P.P.S. Inc. (Helping Our Pediatric Patients Smile).
Their mission is “to bring awareness to pediatric cancer and
to help find a cure.”
It didn’t take long for word to get around about the great work Taylor, June and all of the Dr. Dogs members have been doing
around Lake Charles, which raised some ideas from a philanthropic standpoint.
Many guests who visit our property pass in front of our large fountain and throw in a coin for good luck before entering the
casino. Because the fountain was filling up with coins, it was time for us to clean them out.
Three giant buckets full of coins were pulled from the front fountain. Those buckets included about 7,000 coins totaling almost
$1,000 for this organization! A big thanks to Taylor and June for the great work they are doing in Lake Charles!
Together they help families of children with cancer by donating
care packages, groceries, personal care items and other
needed items. They hold numerous community fundraisers,
such as carnival events, outdoor water events, yard sales and tea parties, as well as volunteer activities throughout the year to
help raise funds and spread awareness. All of the donations they receive go directly to helping families of children with cancer,
with 25% of their funds going specifically to childhood cancer research.
H.O.P.P.S. travels to Kosair Children’s Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky, to help bring smiles to a child’s face. They have a lot of
regular volunteers, including several Belterra team members who volunteer with the charity. H.O.P.P.S sponsors a booth at the
“Larger than Cancer Holiday Party”, where the children are given the opportunity to design their own t-shirts. “All of the kids light
up when they get their t-shirts!” said Chasity.“ One of the most touching t-shirts that we made was for a little girl named Kylee,
who had found out the day before that she was cancer free!”
Their upcoming events and fundraisers along with ways to volunteer can be found on their website, hopp2us.com, as well as
their Facebook page.
“We may not be able to change the world, but when we do small things like this or give groceries and a gas card to the parents
of a pediatric patient, you should see the look on their faces. It may not seem like much but it means that they don’t have to
worry about these simple things. Instead they can spend their time with their children making sure that they continue to fight and
stay strong.”

TSEGA GAVE LIFE THROUGH
HIS KINDNESS
GIVING BACK TO ALL AGES
By: Tsega Sileshi and
Kathy Mulford
Casino Operations
Ameristar Kansas City
Alan Schnormeier
Tsega Sileshi
F
or Casino Operations Supervisor Alan Schnormeier, giving back is simply in his nature. From the elderly to the young, you
can find Alan in his local community, volunteering his time and knowledge.
T
sega Sileshi has been a dealer at Ameristar Kansas City since 2012. He has
continuously provided magical and memorable service, as well as over the top
entertainment and professionalism, for our guests. In 2013, Tsega was named PartTime Team Member of the Year, resulting in a financial reward. Here is the story of how
his winnings from that honor impacted his family and created life.
One group he often works with is the Heritage Ridge Retirement Community. Alan works with the residents to gather products
for care packages to send to our troops. He’s even worked with Ameristar Council Bluffs to collect donated cards, dice and beef
jerky for the baskets they send overseas. In addition, he also participates in their annual Alzheimer’s Walk. He’s able to use the
Ameristar playing cards at the Heritage Ridge Center, too, for memory support with the residents. With help from the cards, they
can work to familiarize themselves with numbers and card suites. Alan also assists in their daily craft sessions, helping them
with constructing wall hangings, making jewelry, cooking and painting.
When his mother passed away suddenly, Tsega and his family were devastated. His
sister took it the hardest. She decided to move back to Egypt with Tsega. It was there
she fell in love with a man and got pregnant. After a seemingly normal pregnancy for
the first five weeks, she became ill and it was discovered that she had a very serious
health issue, which would make pregnancy challenging. After nine months, she lost
the little girl due to a blood deficiency. The pain for Tsega and his sister was horrible.
They had lost their mother and now his sister lost her child. Tsega’s sister desperately
wanted a child of her own, but the health issues continued to prevent her from having
a child. Doctors said a surgery would assist with her fertility, but it was not covered
by insurance.
“I enjoy working with the elderly,” says Alan. “It makes them feel good about themselves when they can do something on
their own.”
Alan also takes an active role with the Sarpy and Cass County’s Department of Health and Wellness. He’s spent time handing out
DNA kits from “SAFE KIDS” to new mothers, explaining the sole purpose of keeping these. He also helps parents with car seat
certifications, making sure child car seats are installed correctly and that they are not outdated. And last, but not least, bicycle
safety. Alan explain safe bicycle riding practice and even hands out bike helmets.
“I attempt to get involved with our community as much as my schedule allows me to,” said Alan.
It was because of the Part-time Team Member of the Year award and honor that allowed Tsega to pay for his sister’s surgery.
With no word from the medical team, Tsega and his family believed that the surgery was not successful…until a few months ago.
Tsega’s sister surprised him by becoming pregnant. He is now a very happy and proud uncle. “I am so proud of my little sister
for remaining strong and determined and I know my mom would be proud too,” said Tsega.

BACONFEST
The growth in the popularity
of bacon festivals across the
US continues. Bacon festivals
are an opportunity for bacon
lovers to unite in a celebration
of “All Things Bacon.” With
bacon-eating contests, bacon
foods and cold beverages,
bacon festivals are devoted to
sharing and expressing one
mutual love— bacon.
Not only about bacon
consumption though, these
festivals are also wonderful
fundraisers for a variety of
charities.
In Omaha, Nebraska, the third
annual Omaha Beer and Bacon Festival kicked off in support of the Omaha Ronald McDonald House. The
festival hosted beer and culinary vendors who competed in competition for the best bacon entry.
And our very own Ameristar Council Bluffs won first place with Chef Andreas’ Buffalo Maytag Blue Cheese
Bacon Burger. The Ameristar team cooked and served more than 800 burgers to bacon lovers!
Not far from Omaha, Ameristar Kansas City also proudly presented and hosted Kansas City BaconFest to benefit The Rehabilitation Institute of KC. This fun bacon, beer and bands event made way
for more than 1,000 people to enjoy bacon dishes from 13 local restaurants including Ameristar.
All proceeds went to help individuals with disabilities going through rehabilitation.
Ameristar culinary team provided three bacon dishes for festival-goers: a pork belly wrapped
in bacon, a hello dolly covered in bacon and a bacon macaroon. Amerisports brews were also
the featured beer at the event, with brewmaster Stacey Payne brewing up 55 kegs of beer for
the event!
With bacon-eating
contests, bacon
foods and cold
beverages, bacon
festivals are
