July 2014 5 GET WET. DIVE IN. L’Auberge Lake Charles Hosts Liquid Society nce it starts to warm up, a question is heard from guests and team members alike—Who is playing at Liquid Society? O Liquid Society is L’Auberge Lake Charles’ summer concert series that takes place Thursday nights by the pool from May 22 to August 14. Starting in 2006, this annual concert series has evolved over the years and so has its name. It was first called Boogie on the Bayou, then later changed to Party by the Pool and is now Liquid Society. Acts like The Black Crowes, 311, Lifehouse, Gavin DeGraw, Candlebox and DJ Pauly D have performed in the Louisiana heat—much to the delight of thousands of fans. BEACH BODY BOOT CAMP By: Vikki Shearman Marketing Communication Specialist L’Auberge Casino Resort Lake Charles Summer Workout Program at L’Auberge Lake Charles This year, we start off with The Wallflowers and will host acts such as Counting Crows, Neon Trees, Weezer, and local bands Ashes of Babylon, Molly Ringwalds and Velcro Pygmies. f you haven’t noticed by now, working at L’Auberge is not your “normal” working environment. I mean, where else can you go workout at the beach after work with experienced personal trainers… for free?! I Beach Body Boot Camp is an annual summer workout program organized by Health Educator, Kristie Evans. The program features a variety of beach workouts that combine different body movements, light resistance training and cardio that will tone the body and help shred pounds! By: Jessica Saxby Internal Communications & Community Relations Manager L’Auberge Casino Resort Lake Charles All team members may participate in this program which is set up to help them stay active and have fun while doing it. This year’s program is titled “Drop and Give Me 5” and helps team members reach their set goals in increments of 5 such as losing five pounds or 5 inches. The team atmosphere provides motivation, support, accountability and most of all… a great time! Liquid Society is the hot place to be on Thursday nights—for the entertainment and for the Louisiana heat. Guests who get too hot can simply jump in the pool and enjoy the tunes in cool comfort. Another perk is ticket prices—this year, tickets are only $10 or $25. 6 July 2014 7 FLYING ABOVE US ALL Ashton Collier A RICH HISTORY AND BRIGHT FUTURE By: Celeste Burks Internal Communications & Engagement Manager Ameristar Casino Hotel Kansas City Zekerijah “Zack” Osmanovic lying high is where you will find Ashton Collier, Valet Attendant, when he is not working at Ameristar Casino Hotel Kansas City. Flying an airplane as a career is something Ashton has wanted to do most of his life. “My grandmother surprised me with a trip on a single engine airplane for my 12th birthday,” said Ashton. Since then he has wanted to become a pilot. While working part-time at Ameristar, Ashton has been studying for his licensing to pursue his dream. F n 1992 a civil war broke out in Bosnia. Towns were destroyed and families went missing. Zekerijah “Zack” Osmanovic, HR Representative at Ameristar Casino Hotel Kansas City, lived in a small town in Bosnia with his parents and brother. When it became very dangerous to live in the town, Zack and his family took the first opportunity given by military to leave. “The men, women and children were separated. My father went one way and my mother, brother and me went the other way,” said Zack, who was seven years old at the time. Zack and his family didn’t know where his father was sent. It turned out that his father was sent with the other men to a concentration camp, where he lived for a year and a half with no communication to Zack or his family. Zack and his mother and brother were sent to a university basketball arena where they stayed on cots for two months. Once a new refugee camp near Tuzla was built, Zack and his mother and brother lived with a family of seven in a small apartment. After eight years, the refugee camp was no longer being taken care of by the government. Don Bosco, which is located in Kansas City, gave Zack and his family a chance to leave the refugee camp and come to America. “Don Bosco gave us six months rent, food stamps and cash to help us get started in America,” said Zack. “They truly were helping people get a second chance at life.” When Zack and his family came to America, they knew no English. “Don Bosco gave us bags that helped others know we were refugees and could not communicate in English. We would hold the bags up to people as a way of communicating with them,” said Zack. In 2006, Zack started at Ameristar Casino Hotel Kansas City as a Hotel Front Desk Clerk. “My English wasn’t great, but Stephanie Hurla gave me a chance in the Hotel,” said Zack. Stephanie is now the Director of Hotel Operations for the property, but was the Hotel Operations Manager at the time when Zack came to work at Ameristar. “She stood behind me and helped me learn the business. She truly made me the person I am now and I consider her like a big sister,” said Zack. While working at Ameristar, Zack improved his English and became a guest and fellow team member favorite. I This summer Ashton will graduate from University of Central Missouri with his professional pilot degree and earn his commercial license, which means he can fly passengers for hire. Ashton enjoys flying for fun too and has flown as far as Iowa and Arkansas from Missouri. Soon he will make a trip to Colorado as well. Ashton has already received many of his licenses and training and is looking forward to graduating this summer. By: Celeste Burks Internal Communications & Engagement Manager Ameristar Casino Hotel Kansas City LENDING A HELPING HAND IN VIETNAM Loi Tran oi Tran, Slot Service Specialist, dreamed of going back to his native country of Vietnam to help orphans. Recently, his dream came true. He traveled to Soc Trang City in Mekong Vietnam and brought the orphan children much needed clothing, food and school books. Although he is the real star for his compassion towards the children, he thanks Ameristar for the time off they gave him. L 8 “It is a pleasure to know offering our team members time off leads to such good things to others,” said Traci Gray-Steehn, Slot Supervisor and Casino Operations Scheduling. “He is an incredible team member and person. It makes me proud to be a part of his team.” July By: Celeste Burks Internal Communications & Engagement Manager Ameristar Casino Hotel Kansas City 2014 Just recently, Zack received a promotion to Human Resources Representative where he enjoys working closely with all of the team members helping them by answering their questions. Zack’s wife had their baby boy in May. They are enjoying being parents. “We are very excited, because it is our first baby,” said Zack. Zack is proud of his history and where he came from. He looks forward to sharing his past stories with his son when he is older. 9 BRAVING THE SEAS Daniel LaFleur SOLAR FLARE PAINT SHOP By: Martina Malone Team Member Engagement Specialist, L’Auberge Baton Rouge Glen Young By: Lauren Tigges Guest Experience Specialist, Boomtown Bossier City aniel LaFleur, L’Auberge Baton Rouge Engineer III, has been sailing for over 25 years. The Florida native’s love affair with sailing began while working as a Cub Scout leader. D Daniel enjoys the serenity of boating alone. He said, “When I’m on the water the only things I can hear are the birds, wind and water. It’s very relaxing.” Even so, everything hasn’t always been pleasant for the seasoned sailor. While boating on a Hunter 25 Sailboat, Daniel had a spine-chilling experience. The tranquil scene he came to love was abruptly replaced with a dark ominous sky. The modest boat he sailed in suddenly became prisoner to robust winds and heavy rainfall. “When I saw the storm coming my way, I didn’t have time to be scared. I had to think of how I would survive,” said Daniel. Daniel quickly began the process of “feathering the boat.” This tedious process requires the sailor to maintain a 45-degree angle to the wind while sailing into the storm. If the process is not done perfectly, the boat will stop moving and be in jeopardy of spinning out of control and flipping over. Although this experience would deter most from boating again, Daniel said this was one of his favorite memories. “The storm lasted for about 20 minutes. When you are in that type of situation, you don’t have time to think. You have to rely on your instinct.” He continued by saying “I loved the excitement of the experience.” This fall, Daniel plans on sailing for three months. He plans to travel to St. Petersburg, Florida, to visit his brother before arriving to his final destination in Carrabelle, Florida. G len Young has been a part of our Boomtown Bossier universe for the past 14 years. In addition to being a professional in engineering, painting and maintenance, Glen has also developed an innovative and truly interesting method of predicting the future. Some of his most interesting discoveries have included how solar flares directly affect earthquakes and tornadoes. Did you know that there is almost always an earthquake within days of a full moon? Or that somewhere in the US there will be a tornado after an intense x-class solar flare? He spends much of his time working in the paint shop located on the lower level of our parking garage. From the outer appearance of the shop, no one would ever suspect the meticulous and detailed contents he has documented on the walls inside the shop. For the past six years, Glen has been avidly studying the sun and the effect it has on the earth. “I use an x-flux monitor, which tracks the activity of the sun and sends the information back to earth as a graph,” he says. Even more unusual and fascinating, he has charted evidence of earthquakes and flares occurring on 90% of all Jewish holidays, including larger magnitude earthquakes on Passover for the past three years. “It brings prophecy to life,” he says excitedly “The more information you add, the more it comes alive and tells a story. That’s why I believe it’s important that we watch. That we continue to keep watch.” For the past three and a half years, each day he has printed out a series of graphs documenting the suns activity which is long enough to circle the entire shop nearly four times! From these graphs, he has created an exceedingly accurate time line of events around the world and their correlation to solar flares and the sun’s effect on the earth. 10 July 2014 Here at Boomtown Bossier, we have a diverse group of team members with many unique talents, interests and ideas. Mr. Glen’s solar flare paint shop is one of our most fascinating examples. He teaches us that there is always something magical and exciting happening around us at all times, we just have to be watching in order to notice. 11 A PREFERRED PLACE TO WORK, PLAY, AND HAVE FUN FOR ALL By: Tracy West Director of Internal Communications Pinnacle Entertainment On May 1, we welcomed the newest member to our PNK family of properties - Belterra Park Gaming & Entertainment Center in Cincinnati, Ohio.
