Membership
Over the years I have seen many different types of
members within our organisation.
There are those who are competitive, who train hard,
frequently practice and attend as many matches as
possible; There are some who are involved in the
administration of the sport – either as a competition
organiser or maybe an RO; There are those who have shot
for many years and who are now giving back to the sport
– maybe involved at club level, are on the Committee, or
are offering coaching and training; or a combination of all
of these.
One thing though – to be most effective in whatever role
you have taken within shooting it’s helpful if you have
been actively involved as a shooter along the way. As with
any sport or hobby – to be good at what you do involves
commitment and wanting to be part of a team.
As individuals we think that we know best but it’s the
combination of working together and bringing many
different points of view to the table, debating these then
agreeing the best way to move forward that gets effective
results.
arise during competitions was invaluable. Pistol NZ wishes
to extend our deepest condolences to Maureen and his
family at this time.
Section Directors
Welcome to Dean Albiston: recently voted in as 3Gun
Section Director. Dean brings a huge amount of knowledge
to this role and Council looks forward to working with him
for what is one of Pistol NZ’s fastest growing sections. We
also wish to thank Bruce Harvey for the previous work he
has done for this section.
And welcome to Aaron Thomason who has volunteered
to step into the Service Pistol SD role until the Nationals
in November.
National Competitions
There are many competitions coming up over the next
few months, so despite the cooler and shorter days get
out there and enjoy. Support those clubs who are putting
time and effort into a shoot for you.
Included in July/August are:
3 Gun SI – 15-16 August
CAS Nationals – 14-16 August
CAS Winter Blast – 21-23 August
IPSC Double Tap – 18-19 July
IPSC Hawkes Bay – 09 August
Muzzle Loading SI – 15-16 August
However the team or group comes together it is
important to remember that our organisation is made
up of volunteers in all aspects. Every year over 750,000
volunteers contribute over 50 million voluntary hours to
sport in NZ. Pistol Shooting contributes to these numbers
and a huge thank you needs to go to the all the wonderful
volunteers that make our sport so strong.
HMS Junior Nationals – 17-19 July
I have been very fortunate along the way to be a part of
many many such teams – at club, national and international
level. And many decisions have been robustly debated
before moving forward. If you have the opportunity to be
involved in more than the just the shooting aspect of the
sport I highly recommend it – it may involve hours of work
but being part of a team that hosts a well-run event or
that contributes to a highly effective club is worth it.

Many of you will remember Ray
Brummell who was the NZSF High
Performance Coach between 2003
and 2008. Ray passed away on the
30th May after a long battle with
cancer.
Ray was a true gentleman who
always put the sport first. He bought
great experience to his role as Coach
and assisted many of our shooters at
the time.
Ray and his wife Maureen helped to run many of the
competitions that made up the national ISSF calendar.
Working alongside Ray was a pleasure; his calm approach

2) ISSF Oceania 2015
A number of our ISSF shooters have qualified for this event
and have been invited to compete at these games which
are to be held in November/December this year in Sydney
. Congratualtions to all those who qualified and good
luck for the ensuing preparation as the year progresses.
Once the teams are finalised we will publish them in an
upcoming edition.
COLFO AGM
Last month I attended the COLFO AGM. Gary Elmes was
again voted in as the PNZ representative of COLFO and I
thank him for being available for this role. Following the
AGM a Council meeting was held with the main focus
being the strategic plan for COLFO. It’s felt that they need
to increase their profile and ensure that the long term
aspects of firearms ownership in NZ are promoted and
maintained.
PNZ AGM
A reminder that this occurs during September in
Hamilton. All the Section Directors will be in attendance
so this is your opportunity to not only hear their plans

for the sections but also have a discussion with them
during lunch. Your Club Secretary would have received all
the information pertaining to this – it’d be great to see as
many clubs represented as possible.
Recently I have received emails from members regarding
my column. I want to thank them for contacting me – it’s
good to hear directly about matters that are important to
you. Enjoy your shooting and I hope to see you around
the ranges.

It’s better to be a little paranoid when dealing with club

Club Constitutions and Rules
It is also a good time to remind clubs about reviewing
these important documents. A clubs constitution should
be reviewed every 2-3 years to make sure it is still relevant
to the club objects and current structure.
Clubs should have a set of club rules which are handed
out to members when they first join. These should include
basic range etiquette, safety and other requirements the
club has decided are in the best interest of all members
and a copy of the Club Range Standing Orders. These are
a fluid document and should be reviewed at least once a
year.
Pistol New Zealand has further information on the PNZ
website to help clubs with constitutions. Club rules are
often unique to each club; contact the PNZ Executive
Officer if you need help to review your clubs rules.

Useful information!
My percussion revolver locked up due to a cap going into
the internals, the hammer would not move due to the
cylinder bolt staying engaged. I have crafted a cunning
tool made from a .15mm feeler gauge blade,I put plastic
heat shrink tube with glue in it to make a handle, poke the
blade between the frame and cylinder behind the bolt
and push foreward and the bolt unlocks.
I made a tool for firmly pushing caps onto nipples,it helps
to have iniform ignition. A plastic handle on loading lever
means less effort seating the balls,I have filed a notch in
the plunger to show ball is lower than face of cylinder.

ACTION
UPDATE
The 37th
By Ian Coates
Action Section Director
NRA Action Shooting
The Bianchi Cup is over, the prizes have been given out to
the deserving and the rumours are thick and fast.
The Kiwi contingent, although small this year, once again
performed very well.
Karl Piper scored 1914-161X for 11th place overall. Tiffany
Piper scored 1899-143X 34th overall and 2nd placed Lady.
Richard Munt on 1855-139X in 71st place. Chris Skewes
unfortunately had to retire after the first day due to ill
health.
Some more facts come to light looking through the scores.
Revolvers may be ‘out of fashion’ here but here were 35
revolver shooters. 4 shooters in the top 20 and 6 shooters
in the top 26. The first 6 revolver shooters scored over
1900. Still revolver is a good option to get into Open
Division.
There were 90 Production Division shooters this year.
This is the fastest growing Division at the Cup. This was
introduced approx 5 years ago as an entry level Division
and prizes are awarded down to 50th place. It was won
again this year by Enoch Smith with an 1874. Not as high
as his 1904 winning score from last year.
Tom Hughes stood down as NRA Competition Pistol
Manager at the beginning of May after dragging up entries
from 135 in 2007 to 311 this year.
He will be missed by many competitors and match
organisers as a man that got things done. He did not agree
or wanted to be associated with some of the changes the
NRA board made to the format so he resigned. It will be
interesting to hear about these and also the plans for the
future of The Cup.
Tiffany and Karl at the Cup!
FEATURE By Jim Shepherd
Columbia, Missouri....Starting bright and early this
morning shooters, officials and volunteers will roll
into the Green Valley Rifle and Pistol Club for the
thirty-seventh edition of the Bianchi Cup. Many of the
serious competitors and international shooters have
actually been here for some time, tuning and prepping for
what will probably be another title decided by X-count,
not gross score.
This event has its detractors, including some friends who
consider it one of the most boring things possible for an
action pistol shooter. Admittedly, it’s not the rapid-fire
bang-and-clang of Steel Challenge, or the run-and-gun
activity of USPSA [IPSC] or 3-Gun, but the majority of
shooters I consider the “unbeatables” in those sports are
here along with the rest of us, plodding along between
the four events that have changed very little since the first
competition.
That’s because the truth of “fast is good, but accuracy is
everything” hasn’t changed since the days of Wyatt Earp.
Bianchi Cup shooters aren’t all fast, but the good ones are
almost freakishly accurate.
The Cup’s “competition” is defined by a single champion,
but there are actually category champions as well. That’s
why a lowly marksmen (that’s me) can compete alongside
- although not “with”- the Masters (those “unbeatables”).
The “rest of us” fall largely into the Revolver or Metallic
categories, not the full-on Bianchi Cup version of the race
gun. Those are equipped with wings (to place against the
barricades), “shifters” that adjust the sights precisely the
right amount for the Mover Event, and have magnifying
optics that bring the long-distance targets close enough
for them to actually see the x-ring. I am happy just to have
a clear sight picture of the target at 50 yards. Hitting itsomewhere- is a goal I haven’t always accomplished.
One of the benefits of what I do for a living is that I could
lay hands on a full-on race gun. For me, it would be fun
-but the thought of my being competitive, even with
one of those uber-tuned guns, would be ridiculous - and
insulting to the spirit of the competition. The goal of the
Bianchi Cup is to determine who’s the best pistol shooterthe great shooters could beat me with my gun. It’s not
about gear- although shooters do have a common love of
guns of all flavors and varieties.

Bullshooter #235
Last year to get a
better perspective of
the true contenders,
I was squadded
alongside
Rob
Leatham. Before we
were finally done,
I had that insight and the realization
I had no business
out there with him.
I’ve described him
more than once as
Rob Leatham
“America’s
oldest
twelve year-old” but
when “the Great One” switches on it’s all business
As an aside: that I’m encouraged by the fact that while
shooting sports were once pretty inflexible when it came to
any sort of changes -especially the minor accommodations
necessary to include people who wanted to shoot but
faced physical challenges -that’s no longer the case.
Shooting really is opening itself up to everyone.
My aged friends have contributed to the survival of
shooting sports around the world. These younger shooters
represent the new faces of the sport. But it’s not an oiland-water mix. Sure, our lame jokes get big eye rolls from
the youngsters, but when we’re together, old or young,
pierced and tattooed or bald and bespectacled, we’re just
shooters. And there’s no shortage of conversations about
topics that would cause some nervous throat-clearing
in other settings. But we’re all together because of a
common love: competition shooting. That commonality is
the lubricant that gets us through our many differences we need to get as many people as possible “lubricated” by
recreational shooting.

UPDATE
By Peter Werder ISSF Section Director
Olympic and Commonwealth Games
shooting shot at 10 to 50 meters
Between the Nationals in March and the new season in six
months later, it a quiet time for the ISSF Section Director
(don’t know if the same applies for other SDs) that
provides some opportunity to look at things long term.
But it’s also the time when athletes seeking international
careers are training to improve their performance levels
for when the new season opens.
Bullshooter #235
One particular long term project is producing “roadmaps”
for future key international competitions.
It is not
fully appreciated by many shooting athletes and their
managers that long term planning is required, and
increasingly it seemed to me that national coaching and
high performance programmes by themselves lacked
purpose unless they fitted into some sort of over-arching
scheme. For example, the coaching & high performance
items can be developed separately but there is no point
having one without the other, and the “roadmaps” will
provide the crucial linkage. It will be interesting to see
how it goes: I’ve not done anything like this before! I’m
pleased to report that several people in the craft (!) are
working on other key items such as the national range
officials programme.
On the competition front, Ricky Zhao and Thomas Nobes
attended the World Cup at Changwon and succeeded in
meeting the ISSF MQS for the Air Pistol event, a crucial
first base in Olympic preparation. At time of compiling
this UPDATE, both are in Munich participating in another
World Cup as part of their preparations for Oceania and
the Rio Olympics.
It is most appreciated that a number of shooters have
indicated already their interest in Commonwealth Games
in 2018.
Progress is being made on the 2015-2016 competition
schedule. It will start off in September in Whangarei.
The South Island championships are pencilled in for
November. We have a new competition in February
at Waipa (more information pending), and the 2016
Nationals set for Napier. Not known at time of writing
are venue and dates for the North Islands.
A couple of days ago, our club secretary handed me
my new Club Range Officer badge and certificate. It
reassuring for all of us to know that even experienced ISSF
judges and even the ISSF Section Director are expected to
“shape up” and meet the standard in this important club
activity!
The 2020 Olympics in Tokyo and the
Quota Places System
The past few months have seen a growing interest by
some of our shooters in the Commonwealth Games in
2018, and the XXXII Olympics in Tokyo two years later, and
the prospects of participating in these key international
sporting events. This has led to further interest in the
“quota places system”, and what this means.
Due to the size of this document I have placed this
information on the PNZ website. You can find this on the
ISSF webpage.
If you have any questions after reading this information,
please contact me.

Speed Nationals
A big thank you must go to the Rotorua Pistol Club for
once again holding an excellent Speed Nationals.
The speed ranges have now been laid with fresh rock,
not to mention, new guttering........one of the best pistol

shooters who are shooting speed steel for the very first
time. It is great to see these new shooters giving it a go.
On top of that, I had the opportunity to meet an Australian
grandmaster speed steel shooter Damien Curtis. I never
seen anyone move and shoot so fast and accurately in real
life before.
Prior to shooting this match, I had to rely on my dry-firing
training at home as I do not have the luxury of going
to the range more than once a week. I kept records of
every match I shot and my goal was to beat my previous
times as I am actually competing against myself. I shoot
aggressively and trying not to miss any plates. My all-time
favourite saying is, “move fast, shoot slow”. These are
the tactics I used to win this Limited National Speed Steel
Championship.
Sheng Wong
NZ Team Glock Shooter – Taieri Arms
It was impressive to watch our International visitor
(Australian National Speed Director), Damien Curtis
shoot both Open and .22.......Damiens .22 score of 77.49
seconds was less than 2 seconds off his third placing at
last years World Championships!
And a big thank you to all that attended, keep practicing
for the next event.
The North Island Champs at Wanganui will be over as you
read this, I will report on this match in the next issue.
A home for the 2015 South Island champs is being worked
on more news will be avaliable soon.
Survey
Thank you to those members who took part in the May
Speed survey.........the results can be found on the PNZ

to clubs looking to hold National and Island matches in
the future.
Tips from the Limited Champ!
After taking a year break from shooting speed steel, it was
definitely good to be back and to have the opportunity to
catch up with a lot of shooters. I also met a group of new

SERVICE Nth ISLANDS 2015
Over the weekend of the 16th & 17th of May the Ranges
at Rotorua Pistol Club, for the first time in a long while,
rang to the sounds of the Service Match North Islands
Championships Competition being held. Well known for
the hosting the bigger IPSC Competitions including the IPSC
Pistol & 3 Gun Nationals, Steel Challenge & Extravaganza
it has been a long time since the original action event in
New Zealand has been shot on the RPC ranges.
As always it was down to a very small crew to get the
show on the road, special thanks need to go to Rowlsey,
Tanya & Tiny, these guys put in a huge amount of their
own time to make this event happen. None of us running
the event had done so for many years and the awards
presentation had the dubious honour of forgetting the
teams but thanks to Rob Blackbourn stepping in the teams
trophies for Service Match & Service Unrestricted were
awarded, funnily enough both to New Plymouth. Thanks
needs to go to Ian Griffin for helping us with some of the
more technical aspects of the Matches and GUNSNZ for
sponsoring Spartan and X-treme projecties for spot prizes.
Thanks also to the RPC members who came out and
donated their time to help with patching & scoring on the
range, I hope next time more of you will come and shoot
the event itself. Just a note to the shooters while there
was no chronographing or gun check that was a one off
only, when we run the National Matches in November it
will be strictly to the rules.

be a tight fit. With only 40 minutes per detail allowed
and with the help of the competitors we made it. All the
Service Match shooters and the 14 or so people who shot
the three Service Classic divisions had finished by around
3pm on Sunday.
Rotorua Pistol Club will be working over the next few
months to develop a second 50m range, which will give
us the ability to run 8 shooters at once doubling the
present capacity. With Rotorua and several other Pistol
Clubs setting themselves up to run Service Match again,
together we can grow
this challenging event.

Well I put my hand up to fill Bruce’s shoes and so the first
thing I need to say is thanks to Bruce for keeping 3 gun
running over the past few years.
The 3 Gun nationals was a hit again with 53 people entering
the 3 day event. A 3 day event was the best way to run this
as we can run one gun per day and change the stages at
the end of each day. There are not many ranges that can
be set up with so many stages to run 3 guns over 2 days
and getting finished by dark. Last year this was voted on at
the Nationals with most people wanting it 3 days.
Congratulations to Phil Dunlop and Chris
Robertson for their wins again this year.
Chris has done this now 4 years in a row !!!!!
I would like to thank
Auckland APC members
Steve Welsh, Mike
Kinmond, Johnny, Peter
and Hamish for building
the stages and sorting
out targets etc. Thanks
also to APC members
Aleks Fajner, John Taylor,
Cyrus Robinson and
Tina for sorting out the
paperwork side of things
and scoring the match.

Without these guys the event would not have happened
at all. We need more people to help with events like this
as they were only guys setting the whole thing up.
feedback from people if they have any issues with either
3gun or Multi so we can start ironing it out.
The prizes for the Nationals were huge with a $4000 AR
15 rifle, a JP AR15 upper and projectiles been given away.
Thanks to Guns NZ for supporting these events and the
lucky sods that won them were happy as a pig in mud.
Thanks to Brent Millard for sorting this out and doing
specials all weekend when we needed to buy stuff.
BRING ALL YOUR GUNS AND GEAR to a 3 gun event.
The event can be changed at a moment’s notice due to
different issues and if you don’t bring your guns it’s hard
to shoot without them. This was an issue for a few turning
up on day one at the Nationals and only having one gun (it
been the wrong one). A few driving back to motels, some
home and not coming back was not ideal.
Coming Matches
The South Island Champs will be in Cable Bay Nelson on
the 15-16 August. Bruce has put his hand up for this and
so he will be sorting this out. So get in with the flights, get
together and pay someone to road trip all the gear down
and across the ferry. Thanks Bruce for putting your hand
up again.
The North Islands will be next on the list to sort out. I will
be getting hold of Phill to start emailing clubs to see if they
can handle running this event. We have people that want
to help so I will be able to coordinate people when I find
out where we can run the event. If your club could do it
then please let me know.
I will be sending out a short survey via email to find out
what people are wanting to shoot (3 gun and or Multi
Gun). There seems to be a split between the 2 at the
moment and we need to sort out some issues I have with
the Multigun rules and RO’ing issues. I would like any
Tip for the new guys and some old

SPEAKING
By Wally Cole. IPSC Regional Director
With the Wanganui Classic over for another year, there
seems to be very few matches if any organised over the
next few months.
There have been rumours of some Level 2 matches
happening but at the time of writing I have not received
confirmation of any of these.
Maybe with the winter months approaching it is time for
most to take stock of where they are at with their shooting,
time to upgrade guns or equipment, change calibre, and
possibly look at shooting in a different division.
Quite a few members have also taken the opportunity
to compete in the recent National Speed Champs and
hopefully the North Island Speed Championships later
this month.
The following is the current list of matches that are
planned for the remainder of this year.

THE ROAD TO THE
string of the practical match my
thumb slips on the safety catch
and I lose precious seconds by:
pulling the trigger; thumbing the
safety then pulling the trigger;
and remembering the front
sight then pulling the trigger ―
by which time the targets have
turned away. My mantra to Be
The Bullet is replaced by Thumb
The Safety. In the mover match
I remember everything except rack the slide: the target
travels thirty feet before I rack it and loose three shots
into the backstop. As the scores are tallied and lunch is
2015 NORTH ISLAND
ACTION CHAMPS
By David Mamea
1387–63x. That’s what I scored at the Thames Valley
Super League in February 2015. With a maximum possible
score of 1920–192x, statistically, my accuracy is 72% in
hitting the 30-by-18-inch cardboard target anywhere, and
33% in finding the 4-inch x-ring at the target’s centre. I’m
officially graded as a Marksman, something I brag loudly
to friends and family about without telling them that this
is the lowest grade.
The North Island champs are a mere eight weeks away. I
plan to use the intervening shoots as stepping stones to
my triumphal debut on the North Island stage.
Far North Pistol Club Super League
Kaitaia ― 8 March
The Far North Pistol Club (FNPC) shoot is a regional legend:
facilities for pistol as well as shotgun and rifle, friendly
and generous locals, and a seafood feed that can’t be
beaten. I travel north with the Auckland Pistol Club (APC)
contingent and the six-hour drive flies by with colourful
and sometimes salty tales of earlier shoots in Northland
and abroad.
readied, Bill runs a side match: a jungle run for shotgun.
I watch the course in action ― targets include airborne
clays, and popper-initiated cans of dirt ― and I know I
must return next year to have a go.
The scores come in: I shot 1078–35x. I hide my
disappointment by tucking into the excellent spread
that our hosts put on. Afterwards, Bob hands out the
awards with the assistance of Bill: the High Master grade
is headlined by Tiffany Piper (APC) and her father Karl
Piper (APC), only four points and one x separating them;
the Expert grade is owned by Rob Scott (FNPC); top of the
Marksman grade is Graeme Leggatt (FNPC), followed by
Marna Williams (FNPC); and the ungraded shooters are
led by Tom Barlow and Chris Paterson, visitors from south
of the Mangamukas.
Club president Bob Banks greets us on arrival, and club
secretary Bill Bice proudly shows us around; the mover
and plates ranges are world-class, and the practical range
is easier on the knees and stomach than previous years.
My preparation for this shoot has been minimal: I enter the
competition with the mantra of Be The Bullet. On the first

The return drive southwards is subdued. My fellow
travellers are likely analysing their performances and
thinking ahead to their next match. I begin to wonder if
Thames Valley was sheer beginner’s luck.
Kiwi Cup Production Action Match
Hamilton ― 29 March
heat and repel water, but the hand I draw my pistol with
is still slick with rainwater ― caution is the best and only
policy. By the time of my final match at the plates, I’m
soaked through and shivering: I count myself lucky to
have dropped any plates at all. My final score is 1087–27x.
The Hamilton Pistol Club (HPC) clubrooms overlook seven
ranges on one side (I find out later there’s a whole other
bunch of ranges behind the clubrooms as well) and the
club has been running for almost forty years.
Hamilton Action Section Director Peter Hansen welcomes
and briefs everyone. I’m squadded with fellow Aucklander
Roger Parris, and Hamiltonians Marty Theobold and Dean
Blake. We start the day with the side match: a multigun
course (see opening article picture) with pistol, shotgun,
and rifle which my squadmates fly through while I find it
to be the longest three minutes of my shooting career.
Awesome fun, though. The rest of the matches are
straightforward as I concentrate on my basics.
At day’s end, Peter hands out the awards. The host club
shooters sweep the top three places ― that’s Peter, Jay
Bellamy and Dean, respectively ― followed by the Royal
New Zealand Navy Pistol Club’s (RNZNPC) Sheng Wong,
APC’s Brent Millard and Ray Salter, and Thames Valley
Pistol Club’s (TVPC) and PNZ Action Section Director, Ian
Coates. I shoot 1261–39x and convince myself that my Far
North score was an anomaly and that I’m ready for the
upcoming North Island champs in three weeks.
North Island Championships
Hamilton ― 18–19 April
The one day I attend (Saturday) it buckets down with
three inches of rain. Only a half-dozen-or-so shooters
brave the weather ― Peter gleefully informs us that the
remainder of the 27 registered competitors have opted
for Sunday which is forecast for clear skies. I’m squadded
with Marty, Harry Hoover and Hilary Hoover, all of them
Hamilton members.
(I obviously didn’t attend the prizegiving but the top
three placings for each division had familiar names: Open
― Tiffany, Paul Loftus [Whangarei Pistol Club], Coatesy;
Metallic ― Karl, Peter, Brent; and Production ― Sheng,
Dean, John Taylor [HPC].)
Epilogue
1087–27x. I have room to improve. A stadium-sized room.
Beginner’s luck and affirmations will only carry me so
far ― I obviously need heaps more practice. This sport
requires more commitment than I imagined. I’m not a
competitive type but I do like to improve. Improvement
requires practice. Practice requires commitment.
There’s Nationals at Whangarei Pistol Club later in the
year.
See you at the range.

Our sport is about having fun in a competitive atmosphere
and hanging out with our shooting mates. It’s also about
winning, but even that has to be put into perspective – it
isn’t as important as safety.

Posse Marshal/RO Checklist
Each posse member introduces themselves and states
what category they are shooting. This breaks the ice.
Safety – Loading and unloading tables to be manned at all
times. No dry firing at loading table. This does not mean
you can’t check your sights or safety. Responsibility of
spotters. Look and listen. Position your self to see every
target. You might have to position yourself differently for
black powder shooters. No talking during the shooters
run. Pass off spotters sticks/flags when changing. Don’t
look at or confer with other spotters for count – do your
own.

If you think it’s a hit, it’s a hit.
If you think it’s a miss, it’s a hit.
If you know it’s a miss, it’s a miss.
Hits on target stands are misses.
170 degree rule – Firearms pointed downrange at all
times. Watch cross draws.
Timer operators – RO2s please raise your hands.
Do we have any 1st Aiders here?
Do we have any shooters here who may need any
specific medical attention? (Come and see me).
Shooter commands. “Cowboy/cowgirl/shooter
ready, stand by”, beep.
If the stage calls for a starting line, then after the
line, still give a “stand by“and then beep.
With down range movement, some BRASS may be
picked up as soon as the shooter has moved down
range to their next shooting position.
Announce the sequence of stages to be shot for the
day – lunch etc.
Posse shooting order – voluntary or rotational?
Correct scoring format. 1/5, 2/10. If using electronic
scoring then designate 2 scorers who know the
programme being used e.g. ACES/ SASS.
Eye and ear protection must be worn.
Shooter to check and initial score sheet after shooting
each stage.
Protest procedure – RO then Match Director.
Have fun – be safe.
Going to the Range – Health Benefits
1.Builds physical discipline – gets you off the couch. Shooting sports help build and maintain physical discipline
such as increased strength, stamina, co-ordination and
fine motor skills.
2.Focus – need to train eyes to perceive what’s in front of
you, what’s further downrange, as well as what’s in your
peripheral vision.
3.Eyesight – provide muscular exercise. Eyes need a
break from staring at computers, TV’s, phones and other
electrical devices.
4.Increased mental discipline – inner focus can equate to
90% of shooting success. Concentration levels increase
and sharpen as you focus on the tasks at hand.
20 www.pistolnz.org.nz
5.Advances personal responsibility – overcoming dangers
training peoples thought process allowing them to become
personally aware and responsible of their surroundings –
safety skills development.
6.Confidence – shooting can build confidence as well
as a better understanding of what this piece of sporting
equipment can achieve in competent hands.
7.Physical balance – shooting increases your physical
balance and stability and can assist in increasing core
strength.
8.Adrenaline – firing that firearm can be an exhilarating
experience.
So next time you go down to the range, remember all the
benefits you are receiving from what you normally just do
for fun. Shooting can provide a fun time for all, if we follow
the simple rules of safety and we place responsibility high
on the priority list for being a safe firearms owner.
Coming Events

this shoot on 10th – 13 Sept. Book your time off and get a
car-load or two organized for a great weekend.
High Noon. The SASS NZ Regional/ PNZ CAS Champs
will be hosted at Palmerston North on 12th – 15th Nov.
Trophy winners from last year please remember to have
the trophy engraved and ready to be competed for again
this year. Entry forms are on the PNZ website.
Holstering your pistol-where can I do this?
I have been asked if it is ok to Holster your pistol(s) from
the back of your car, if the car is parked on a range.
The answer is No. Here is the Range Etiquette and Safe
Behavior text from the PNZ member’s handbook:
“After arrival at the range, pistols must be transferred
from the carrying box to holster or to a carry pouch if
this is how the shooter prefers to carry the pistol when
not shooting.
This may only be done in a safety zone or on the firing
line (and then only with the permission of and under
the direct supervision of the RO).There will also be
times when it is necessary to clean or repair a pistol at
the range, or when you wish to show someone else the
pistol for some reason.
These activities may only take place in a Safety Zone.
All clubs will have at least one Safety Zone. This is the
only area other than the firing point in which pistols may
be handled. You may not take a pistol from its box and
holster it at your car”
