Is this surreal optimism or intelligent conclusion? At the Strategy Forum of the INSEAD Alumni association, March 5th at the Hermitage, almost all opinions were optimistic. Europe has the knowledge, geography, an installed base of highly trained people and (currently) has more financial resources. With all those advantages Europe should be able to consolidate its position. The Strategy Forum was filled with praise, especially for the positive, can-do attitude of the INSEAD Alumni. we’ll solve the problem in a few years. Europe, the world’s think-tank. Thanks to the Strategy Forum, we now know that late industrializers have a slight disadvantage, that “Services” are the big opportunity and that if we dare to be positive about our own ability and invest in innovation and education we can (and should) do much better. And investing in innovation and education is exactly what we do by supporting INSEAD. We are proud that the school chose to send such a strong delegation to our Strategy Forum. Interim Dean Peter Zemsky said: “Coming to Holland just made a lot of sense as a place to kick this off. There’s a lot of success here, a lot that we can learn and tremendous support for the school [..] giving us a lot to reflect on.” In the two minutes that the participants were given by Rens de Jong to “solve the problem” of Europe’s return to competitivenss, we nearly all nailed it. Give us the power and DUTCH ALUMNI ASSOCIATION Another important piece of feedback that we got during the day (and that we are proud of) was that the Alumni Association is more and more becoming a franchised branch of the school. Events with such strong speakers and content give the Alumni the sense of lifelong learning. 2 NEWSLETTER SPRING 2013 And that is exactly what we want to achieve with the Alumni Association. Our vision is that your time and education at INSEAD doesn’t stop when you leave campus, but that it never stops at all! You check out but you don’t leave. You seamlessly check into your National Alumni Association (NAA), which is the start of the rest of your life at INSEAD. Why? Because you roll into a peer group of great people with common memories of their time at INSEAD and because you get the opportunity to attend, learn, interact and contribute at a multitude of great events every year. Because INSEAD stands for excellence, diversity, sustainability and for a lifelong experience. The Strategy Forum was followed by a Salamander Dinner. With this dinner, the NAA and the school wanted to thank its generous benefactors. Great fun and food and at the end of the dinner, Jonathan Story gave away a Russian serenade! A growing number of alumni are becoming small or larger donors to the INSEAD Alumni Fund. This money is used for scholarships for students from developing countries, for research such as the European Competitiveness Initiative or for specific causes that endowments specify. In a competitive world with US schools with billions in endowed funds, our school needs these donations to be able to deliver on its promise of being the Business School for the World. This is money well spent for a school without any government support. You invest in excellence in diversity and in education, the basis for European Competitiveness in the future. Hope to see you at the next dinner! Because we have sixty volunteers and many kind sponsors supporting our endeavors. DUTCH ALUMNI ASSOCIATION Warm regards, Olivier 3 NEWSLETTER SPRING 2013 REVIEW New Year’s Drinks @ the EYE On Tuesday January 8th, the IAA organized its New Years Drinks at the EYE Film Institute. In the spring of 2012, the EYE Film Institute moved from the Vondelpark into its new location on the northern bank of the river IJ. Gijs de Rooij reports. Alumnus Charles Hollenkamp (MBA’86D) offered to organize the drinks in the upper Arena part of the Institute, allowing all those present a magnificent view of the Amsterdam Harbour. On behalf of EYE, Eline Danker, Head Business Development, elaborated in a short presentation on the history of EYE, the transition to its new organizational structure and design of the EYE building. DUTCH ALUMNI ASSOCIATION Our IAA president Oliver Gorter then spent a moment on reviewing the IAA events of 2012 and to look ahead to the agenda for 2013. The record attendance of more than 120 alumni was significantly larger than the organization expected. We felt compelled and were happy to extend the duration of the evening by at least an hour to enable everyone to exchange New Year’s Greetings, and we hope that this profound enthusiasm of our members will continue to densely populate IAA’s future events as well! 4 NEWSLETTER SPRING 2013 REVIEW Meet the Company: PostNL On the 22nd of January, PostNL hosted our alumni at one of their 18 new sorting and distribution centers for Parcels in Waddinxveen. The alumni were treated to a presentation by PostNL’s CEO Herna Verhagen as well as a guided tour of the facility. Carlos Mendes Aguiar reports. Herna Verhagen, installed as CEO in April 2012, informed us how PostNL is transforming from a letter delivery company into a growing parcel delivery company - mainly due to the further development of digitization. Email marketing, SMS, Whatsapp and other digital developments decrease the amount of letters. Ecommerce and mobile commerce boost the growth of the parcel delivery business. PostNL is based in Holland and active in The Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Italy and the United Kingdom. Outside The Netherlands the company nowadays delivers more letters than in their home market. The Ecommerce market in The Netherlands grew 9%. The Ecommerce market for goods grew 12%. PostNL is market leader in parcel delivery in The Netherlands and invests in 18 new sorting and delivery centers to cope with the expected growth. Furthermore the company invests in niche delivery markets such as pharma logistics, secured logistic networks, courier services and in value added services in the ecommerce value chain. After the presentation and an extensive Q&A session, the alumni visited the sorting and delivery center to further their understanding of the ongoing sorting process. ANNOUNCEMENT Lean (Startup) Workshop - INSEAD Entrepreneurship Club - 15 May On May 15th the third event of the INSEAD Entrepreneurship Club will take place. This time we focus on Lean Startup. Timo Mulder and Kees van Nunen (ValueFirst), experts in the field and mentors at Startup Bootcamp, will lead the workshops. Lean concepts are interesting both in an entrepreneurial setting as well as in improving corporate innovation. Date: Wednesday 15 May Time: 18.00-21:30h. Place: Amsterdam Registration: [email protected] For the event we ask the attendants to pay EUR15 p.p. to cover sandwiches and drinks: INSEAD Alumni Association – RABO Bank in Utrecht – account number 39.45.20.327 More info on the Entrepreneurship Club: http://inseadentrepreneurshipclub.nl DUTCH ALUMNI ASSOCIATION 5 NEWSLETTER SPRING 2013 REVIEW Entrepreneurship Club: Focus on Funding Tuesday evening February 12th, the second Entrepreneurship Club event was held, this time with a light funding theme. Herman Kienhuis (MBA’01J) was kind enough to host us at SanomaVentures and act as a keynote speaker. Matthijs Baan and Wouter Kneepkens report. Suzanne Meyer (IEP F/S’08Mar), opened the event on behalf of the club’s committee with a quick word of welcome and a recap of the past activities and future events. Next, Herman spoke about funding and “his side of the table” with respect to dealing with startups. Sanoma aims to grow its future revenues through online activities, given the decline in print and other regular media, and has therefore launched SanomaVentures. Next to its own developments and concepts, this enables the firm to take (strategic) stakes in rapidly growing or interestingly positioned internet startups. Through a combination of funding, media and mentoring Herman aims to boost the development of these portfolio companies. The investment focus is on consumer oriented businesses and its first year, 2012, resulted in seven investments. Herman stated that part of this success was due to the positioning of SanomaVentures, as it fills the Dutch funding gap between angel investment and VC investment (roughly EUR 200-500k funding size). He also provided us with an overview of the Dutch landscape, which for the moment remains spread across various hubs like Amsterdam and Eindhoven. However, a lot of the building blocks are in place to form a healthy startup community, but this will take time, Silicon Valley also took decades to develop. A copy (shareable version) of his presentation can be found here. DUTCH ALUMNI ASSOCIATION Our second speaker for the evening was Gijs de Rooij (MBA’00D) of LED Lease. Whereas most LED players simply sell their products, requiring vast investments in these lights, Gijs innovates by leasing his clients their solutions, basically selling them light instead of lights. As a “fixed assets” type of business the funding requirements for LED Lease are very different from those of internet startups, requiring significant capex and working capital to grow. Gijs took us through their journey to find the right funding partners, during which they spoke to all the regular parties: angels, banks & funds, but to no avail. Banks for instance were very interested due to the profile of the company: renewable, recurring revenue, long contracts, triple A clients and asset financing. However, given the LED lights would form part of the building under Dutch law regular asset financing was no option. They finally found a financier that would not only provide them with operational funding, but that was also willing to fund their projects – a perfect solution. After both presentations it was time for the “mini-cases/pitches”: John Staunton & Renji John (MBA’11D/J) – ShopperConcepts, pitched their smartphone based loyalty card v2.0 concept, which will provide shoppers a better experience, while it provides shop-owners a wealth of information through big data. Audience feedback included that the proposition to both type of clients needed to be crystal clear and that it would make sense to stay close to existing consumer behaviour, as changing behaviour is near impossible. A nice side note: Renji and John met and started work on their business at our entrepreneurial breakfasts. 6 NEWSLETTER SPRING 2013 Ronny Roeller (MBA’11D) – Collaborne, asked the audience for experience and tips regarding B2B sales in the Dutch large corporate market. During the Q&A Ronny further explained various use cases for Collaborne and got a number of interesting leads once the concept and target clients were clear. advice through smart templating. He asked the audience what their main inhibitions would be to use the service and how best to target the Dutch SME market. The feedback was mostly around creating trust around his online and digital offer, versus quality physical legal advice. We closed the event with some drinks, once again provided by our host SanomaVentures and look back at a great and entertaining evening. For more Entrepreneurship Club events check out our events page (http://inseadentrepreneurshipclub.nl) and make sure to attend one of our monthly Entrepreneurial Breakfasts. Bastiaan de Wit (MAP'10May) – Zebralegal, explained his concept of online personal legal REVIEW Back to School! @ Russell Reynolds When you graduate from INSEAD, your 5 or even 10-year Reunion seems very, very far off. But time marches on! To get into the spirit of reunion, which will take place in May 2013, the MBA promotions ‘03J,’03D,’08J and ‘08D were kindly invited by Russell Reynolds to pre-celebrate going back to school. Annemarie van Neck reports. The event on February 28th started with a quick review of the Reunion program and a call to action to donate to the IAF in the spirit of the reunion classes’ campaigns (visit http://giving.insead.edu to donate!). Next, Russell Reynolds’ Hans Reus (MBA’90D) and Pieter Ligthart (MBA’01J) talked about what INSEAD had meant to them and still means to them now. Then it was time to put our brains to work! Alumnus Martijn Janssen (MBA’08D) and his colleagues Sebastiaan Ambtman and Jop Houben proudly introduced their venture Voradius. Voradius is a search engine that allows online consumers to find products in physical shops nearby. Next to buying online a lot of DUTCH ALUMNI ASSOCIATION consumers do their buying research online and then buy offline and Voradius is playing on this trend to direct people to the shops in their neighborhood and buy the product directly without having to wait for delivery. They posed three strategic questions to the group, ranging from which large partners to focus on, how to engage SMEs to join the platform and …. Subsequently, the audience broke into three groups to discuss these strategic challenges and reported back to the plenary group. A fruitful and constructive discussion ensued, with a multitude of tips and guidance. Thank you to Russell Reynolds for the Sushi and Drinks, and to Martijn and his colleagues for opening up to us and allowing us to offer advice! 7 NEWSLETTER SPRING 2013 REVIEW IPEC: Investing in Africa @ FMO On Wednesday the 13th February, FMO (Entrepreneurial Investment Bank) hosted an evening at their offices about the developments in private equity in Africa. Taertse Schaper reports. We were fortunate that as a result of a pension conference the following day, a number of senior partners of pan African private equity firms were in The Hague. The evening started with a presentation by Annette Berendsen, who runs a team of 12 professionals at FMO that invest in African funds, and also do direct co-investments in deals with African funds. Annette presented FMO´s track record of investing in Africa, built up over a period of 25 years, with impressive results both in terms of impact and financial returns. Another FMO veteran, Ben Zwinkels, added some more colour and detail to this, with some remarkable insights based on his 30 years’ experience of investing in Africa. focus on the actual deals, with some interesting anecdotes, giving a perspective on the criteria that determine the chances of success when investing in African companies. Whereas on the one side many companies are growing fast, and competition at times can be relatively benign compared to the developed world, the challenge of finding good management teams remains one of the key challenges for private equity in Africa. Given the high turnout for this event, and the number of business cards that were exchanged, it may well be that the INSEAD community may have a contribution to make in this area in the coming years! Subsequently, two active private equity professionals (Aziz Mebarek of Africinvest and Antoine Delaporte (MBA’88D) of I&P Management, an INSEAD alumnus), moved the focus from the macro overview to more of a DUTCH ALUMNI ASSOCIATION 8 NEWSLETTER SPRING 2013 REVIEW INSEAD Strategy Forum: “Europe’s Return to Competitiveness” Putting the Lifelong Learning Experience for INSEAD Alumni into Practice Tuesday, March 5th, 2013. A sunny, yet chilly, day in Amsterdam. I am walking towards the worldfamous Hermitage Museum (www.hermitage.nl) at the banks of the Amstel river, excited about the INSEAD Strategy Forum. The board and event committee of the Dutch Alumni Association have been working hard over the last couple of months to get a fantastic line-up of speakers from the academic, political and business world in order to discuss one of the hottest topic in Europe at the moment: “How do we get Europe back to competitiveness after this unprecedented economic and political crisis?”. Sven Cobben reports. Over 250 of our alumni, as such the biggest event ever organized in the Netherlands, came together for 3 hours of insights, inspiration and networking. After a warm welcome by Olivier Gorter – President of the Dutch Alumni Association – journalist and presenter Rens de Jong (Business News Radio) hit the floor with his energy and sharpness. Within minutes, the whole community was in deep deliberation with one another to solve the most crucial questions of our times. With the overall energy level risen to the right heights, Emeritus Professor Jonathan Story took over the stage for his aria on the question "Is Europe becoming the back quarter in a changing world?". Jonathan shared some of his most provoking views on “the French” and “the Germans”, as he did during most of his lectures in the old days at INSEAD. The presentation was concluded with a lively debate between Jonathan and a number of the spectators, making it almost DUTCH ALUMNI ASSOCIATION impossible for Rens to intervene; the INSEAD spirit at its best! Professor Javier Gimeno, who is also Academic Director of the INSEAD European Competitiveness Initiative, took over the microphone to explain why he thinks that ‘More Europe’ remains our best path towards long-term competitiveness. With a dazzling overview of facts and figures, Javier pinpointed clearly the main issues and came forward with steps to get Europe back on track. He also promised to get back once the results of INSEAD’s study would be ready. Henk ten Hove, CEO of Wavin, was interviewed by Rens de Jong. In the interview Henk elaborated on his views on the competitiveness of his (European) company 9 NEWSLETTER SPRING 2013 and the opportunities created by this. These views were further discussed in a ‘supervisory board’ panel discussion with Cees van Lede (Chairman Supervisory Board Heineken, MBA'67), Peter Zemsky (Interim Dean of INSEAD) and Hugo van Berckel (Partner CVC Capital Partners, MBA'89D). Possibly one of the best quotes/views came from Hugo van Berckel, who mentioned that CVC sees Europe as one of the best places to invest at the moment, due to upside opportunities in restructuring. Last, but not least, was Wiebe Draijer (MBA’91D), chairman of the Social Economic Board. Wiebe, coming fresh from the negotiations between the social partners, explained the Dutch view on the current situation and the opportunities going forward. On the one hand still one of the most competitive economies in the world, on the other hand in the middle of an economic crisis due to the lack of consumer confidence. Having been in his new role for several months now, he was very positive about possible solutions to the current crisis. After 3 hours of great speeches and discussions, the alumni moved inspired and re-energized to the bar and were treated with various delicacies from the NEVA Restaurant. The evening was concluded with a fund raising dinner for the INSEAD European Competitiveness Initiative, where 50 guests (many of which Salamander holders) had a very pleasant and entertaining evening. As a final goodbye Professor Jonathan Story, who has started a second career as an opera singer, sang a part of a Russian opera for us. A very fitting end to a great day. As the event had some international coordination with the INSEAD alumni association in Luxemburg, Professor Jonathan Story left the next day to hold another keynote speech at the EIF in Luxemburg. We are proud to have been able to support our friends and colleagues in Luxemburg with this initiative. A warm thank you to the event committee, alumni board, INSEAD, the speakers, all the alumni who visited and of course to our main event sponsor Solving IMCG to make this event very memorable! Want to see more about the strategy forum? Go to http://youtu.be/iEIyaC2JXr0 See you next year! INSEAD European Competitiveness Initiative INSEAD, the leading international business school, announced on October 26, 2012 the launch of its European Competitiveness Initiative. This broad research and outreach endeavour will advance strategic frameworks that contribute to the long-term global competitiveness of European businesses and institutions. The major project comes during one of the region’s most economically challenging decades. More than 25 INSEAD Professors will lend their thought leadership to the Initiative through research projects and case studies to enhance understanding of the unique opportunities and challenges that companies face in Europe today. This scholarship will have realworld impact that improves European global competitiveness and helps frame innovative public policies. For more information, please visit: http://eu.competitiveness.insead.edu/ DUTCH ALUMNI ASSOCIATION 10 NEWSLETTER SPRING 2013 DUTCH ALUMNI ASSOCIATION 11 NEWSLETTER SPRING 2013 ANNOUNCEMENT In October 2013, INSEAD golf ers will have the opportunity of participating in the annual Channel Cup event, which will take place f or the f irst time in the Netherlands. The idea, conceived and f irst staged in England in the autumn of 1986, is f or a match between two teams drawn from British/US and Continental Alum ni. The event almost f oundered in 1987, where the high w inds (and concurrent stock market crash) prevented the British players crossing the channel. On the basis that problems should be viewed rather as opportunities, Eurotunnel, in the planning stage at the time with the objective of providing an alternate means of cross channel transport, was persuaded to support the venture by donating a Cup. So the tournament has taken place each autum n since then, alternating between the British Isles and Ireland, with a var iety of locations on mainland Europe. Scotland has hosted the tour nament on three separate occasions; since one theory holds that golf was played initially in Holland bef ore crossing the North Sea, it is f itting that f inally the Netherlands should be the venue this year. The Continentals hold a slight lead in the series, but the Cup remains in the Br itish camp f or the second successive year – until 2013? The competition takes the f orm of an individual Stablef ord, with the Cup going to the team with the highest aggregate Stablef ord score. The Saturday match is generally preceded by a warm up round on the Friday organized in pairs to allow participants to make or renew acquaintances, and f ollowed by a scramble on the Sunday morning blending low and high handicappers. This year the courses to be played are Hilversumsche on the Friday (thanks to Robin Roodhuyzen de Vries), Kennemer f or the Channel Cup on Saturday (thanks to Matty Vanderbroeck) f ollowed by dinner in the clubhouse and the International on Sunday f or the Scramble, conveniently located near the airport to allow the happy f ew still in employment to get back f or the f ollowing week. Lucile de Godoy reports. There was a truly international group of 23 participants, with over ten different nationalities, who travelled from Germany, France, Belgium, London, Luxembourg and the Netherlands to join the Bootcamp experience. They brought with them not only a wealth of business ideas but also a lot of drive and energy to endure more than 32 hours face-to-face time with Paul Kewene-Hite, INSEAD professor of entrepreneurship, who conducted the course from Thursday evening to Saturday end of the day. Participants worked their ideas in teams, from early mornings to late at night, following a tight agenda and deadlines. While benefiting from Paul's knowledge and experience on how to take a basic idea, develop it along a clear path and transform it into a business, they could further refine their ideas, share experiences and evolve to new heights. The final day was even more intense as the nine teams prepared and then pitched to our three expert jury members: Geert Jan Dirven: a multi talented entrepreneur, business advisor & investor, MD of Northwest Interests, a private VC fund. Gerrit Schipper, CEO RCD, business angel and also a fellow member of Smart business Initiative Network SBNI. Susan Stolte, President Bod Hospitality Business School The Hague, Chairman of NCD, experienced (non) executive director. DUTCH ALUMNI ASSOCIATION After two pitching rounds and intense Q &A's, the jury chose 'Shopper concepts...the only rewards program your business will ever need!' as the winning idea. Interestingly the two co-founders John Staunton and Renji John met at one of the Breakfast meetings of the newly created Entrepreneurship Club of the Dutch INSEAD Alumni, which serves as a supporting system for entrepreneurs. This year’s Bootcamp was once again an intense and successful event. Following some the testimonies demonstrating the value and strengths of the Bootcamp: 'Real feedback, detailed real life experience of Paul, structured approach to starting a company' 'Comprehensive coverage of key items to address before launching a business; additive for (potential) entrepreneurs at varying degrees of preparation or progress in their business plans' 13 NEWSLETTER SPRING 2013 'Accelerated timeline was a highly efficient setting for our team (we came as a team) to make progress in agreeing on what the idea is, key selling points, shortcomings in the team and a timeline to implementation.' 'Confront my idea with its constraints, strengths and opportunities to classmates, get specific feedback from Paul, understand how to link the idea, the budget-needs, the activities to make the idea a venture, and fellows interested in my idea and sharing their experience around the topic & market' Join the Dutch Insead Entrepreneurship club if you haven't done so. An excellent opportunity to meet, learn and share with Entrepreneur minded Alumni. Also an excellent platform to test your ideas, get feedback, connections and who knows......find your future business partners! NL Entrepreneurship Club Committee: Suzanne Meyer - Wouter Kneepkens Matthijs Baan - Dominique Delporte Lucile De Godoy - David Voûte - Joris Pouw REVIEW Healthcare & Life Sciences Club “AWBZ – Opportunities in the long-term care market” On Tuesday March 19 a record number of Healthcare and Life Sciences alumni (46) gathered in the new A.T. Kearney Office overlooking the IJ in Amsterdam to discuss the changes that will take place in the AWBZ (long term care insurance system) and the opportunities these changes create. Willem Koelewijn reports. insurance companies and the remaining part will become a national facility. The new cabinet has put the change of the AWBZ high on its agenda. Hans van Noorden, Directeur Zorgkantoren van de VGZ, took the audience through a clear overview of how parts of the ABWZ will go the municipalities, another part will to the health DUTCH ALUMNI ASSOCIATION Next Rune Aresvik (MBA’89D), introduced the Arvede Groep of companies to the audience. Within the Arvede Group, there are several care concepts that cater to students and young adults with autistic spectrum disorders. Over the last several year the Arvede Group has grown to 25 small scale locations with self-managing teams. A big thank-you to A.T. Kearney for hosting this event. 14 NEWSLETTER SPRING 2013 REVIEW Fokke Obbema “China en Europa” AGM 2013 On Wednesday, April 17th a group of 30 alumns gathered at Dauphine restaurant in Amsterdam. The objective of the evening was two-fold: we had the opportunity to listen to Fokke Obbema present his book “China en Europa”, and the Association held its Annual General Meeting 2013. Annemarie van Neck reports Fokke Obbema is the correspondent for China/Europe at “De Volkskrant”, and has a deep interest in China and its relationship with Europe. He recently published his book “China en Europa – where two worlds meet”. Should we be afraid of China, with its rising global power, both economically and politically? Or could a relationship of trust grow between Europe and China, despite all the political and cultural differences? With that dilemma as a starting point, Fokke Obbema traveled through Europe and China, and spoke many entrepreneurs, students, politicians and experts and visited those places where the interaction between Chinese and Europeans is in full swing. In his book, he outlines how mutual feelings of superiority impact Chinese-European relationships. After his presentation, the audience bombarded the speaker with questions – China continues to be a hot topic! The Annual General Meeting of the INSEAD Alumni Association in the Netherlands was held next. The Board of the IAA NL reviewed 2012, with respect to the events, membership and the financial results. Also our IAF Trustee DUTCH ALUMNI ASSOCIATION Joop Heijenrath, presented the fundraising results over 2012. Subsequently, the plans for 2013 were outlined. One of the key challenges for 2013 will be the turnaround of IAA NL’s communication, IT, event management and social media strategy and activities. The IAA NL will be join forces with Collaborne – founded by INSEAD alumni Ronny Roeller and Moodi Mahmoudi (both MBA’11D) – to establish one INSEAD-centric, reliable, scalable, and modern platform to engage and serve the Dutch alumni community. Collaborne has been successfully serving the international (and Dutch!) INSEAD entrepreneurship community the Dutch Alumni Association is excited to collaborate with Collaborne to bring our front- and backoffice activities up to the latest standards. The AGM ended with a “cap-on/cap-off” quiz, checking the attendants’ knowledge of the IAA NL – the winners were awarded with Fokke Obbema’s book. A smaller group of Alumni stayed on to enjoy the Dauphine cuisine. 15 NEWSLETTER SPRING 2013 IN-BOARD UPDATE IN-BOARD 2013 The kick-off for Wave 5 of the IN- BOARD Academy took place at INSEAD in Fontainebleau on February 7th-10th. For the 5th time, a group of some 40 senior INSEAD Alumni assembled for their 3-day course on Governance and Leadership. IN-BOARD activities have now spread not only to Germany, but to Switzerland and Belgium as well. At the welcome dinner on Thursday evening Hendrik-Jan Laseur and Roland Zoomers, on behalf of INBOARD, welcomed the participants from all these areas. This Leadership module, developed especially for IN-BOARD by Professors Eric van der Loo and Jaap Winter, again dealt with not just typical organizational behavior issues in the Board vs. the management, but also provided the participants with a more profound view on their own “leadership styles” from 360 evaluations with their peers. The complete IN-BOARD Academy will run until November this year, with modules every six weeks with IN-BOARD partner organizations i.e. Houthoff Buruma, KPMG, McKinsey&Company, Egon Zehnder, NPM and Hill & Knowlton. The IN-BOARD Academy provides senior INSEAD Alumni, who already have Board responsibilities and those who aspire to become non-executives, with an excellent platform to share experiences with fellow INSEAD non-executives and strengthen their own capabilities in this specific role. The INSEAD module is shared with INSEAD alumni from the other regions, while the follow-up modules are exclusively for Dutch IN-BOARD members. With the growing demand from the other INSEAD Alumni Associations to participate in the INBOARD Academy, we have decided to start the next wave (Wave 6) already in November this year, with follow-up academy modules in the first half of 2014. For those interested, please mail Mary Linn a.s.a.p ([email protected]). We already have 4 alumni on the “waiting list” and only about 15 places available! On May 7th, the IN-BOARD Governance Lab will be held at Van Doorne Advocaten as of 16.00 hours (including a light dinner). IN-BOARD Governance Labs are for IN-BOARD Academy alumni only! Please register with Mary-Linn at [email protected]. Were managers manoeuvred to be the fall guys? Was the company already disintegrating anyhow? Which role did the Italian subsidiary play? Would you do better? Van Doorne’s Annemieke Hendrikse, will be our host for the evening. PwC’s Gert van der Leest will also be part of our sharp-shooting panel. Location is office of Van Doorne in Amsterdam, Jachthavenweg 121, 1081 KM, and we kick-off at 16.00 hours. Drinks served from 18.30. Sign up with Mary Linn at [email protected] to secure your place. With more than 60 alumni we had a great time, until today we still meet each other on a regular basis and each year we organize a short holiday reunion, every year in a different continent. My best memory of INSEAD is the great time we had during the program but also during the time we spend together afterwards. The network we have with people all over the globe is something I am thankful to be part of. The reason I joined the IAA event committee is to meet new people, help organize different events at interesting companies and organizations and to further develop my network within the INSEAD community. The ideal IAA event that I would love to organize would be in Spain, visiting the local Football club Real Madrid or FC Barcelona. After a "company visit" we are invited the play a game with the First Squad. After losing 3-0 at half time, we win the game with 3-4. "Impossible is nothing". LET ME INTRODUCE MYSELF Jeroen Beijer (TGM F/A'13Feb) My name is Jeroen Beijer and I work for Phillips as Senior Director New Venture Integration. I am responsible for the value realization and successful integration of Philips acquisitions in the Consumer and Healthcare sectors. Prior to this, I led the Consumer Sector Lean/Six Sigma Improvement program in the area of Marketing and Sales. Before joining Philips in 2005, I worked for Johnson & Johnson in several Supply Chain & Logistics Management roles in Belgium, USA and The Netherlands. I now live in Amsterdam with my wife and daughter and we are expecting our 2nd child any moment now. Recently I completed the INSEAD TGM course in Fontainebleau and Abu Dhabi and found it an fantastic life experience, not only did I learn a lot I also got to know a lot of great people! Job Caljé (MBA’12D) My name is Job Caljé (MBA’12D), just graduated from INSEAD, where I spent most of my time in Singapore. After graduation I enjoyed my P6 in Australia, New Zealand and Fiji with my girlfriend. I just arrived back in the Netherlands and started working on the expansion plans of Snappet, a Dutch startup introducing tablets in primary education, founded by two INSEAD alums. By using Snappet’s tablets, children work on their own level at their own pace, while the teacher monitors progress and helps children who are stuck. I have already enjoyed the entrepreneurial breakfast and I look forward to meeting you at the alumni events! DUTCH ALUMNI ASSOCIATION 20 NEWSLETTER SPRING 2013 Wouter de Koning (MBA’12D) I am Wouter de Koning, 30 years old and I currently live in Amsterdam together with my girlfriend. I graduated as Civil Engineer, but started my career as management consultant at McKinsey & Company. Before INSEAD I decided to take a short leave from Consulting and work for the NS (Dutch National Railway). I helped with the international expansion of the retail business, which gave me the opportunity to work in an industry close to my heart while exploring something new. During my MBA we decided to stay in Singapore for the whole year. Besides the incredible experience of all the different cultures at school, we tried to experience as much as we could from South-East Asia. After my MBA I decided to rejoin McKinsey, but I will focus more on transport, planning and logistics. In my free time I like playing field hockey, sailing and cooking. Jochem Oosting (MAP’13F) My name is Jochem Oosting, 38 years old, I am married and have a son and a daugther (6 and 4). As a manager of the Legal Department at the Erasmus Medical Center I am responsible for a large team of legal professionals. This department also incorporates the complaints department, the insurance portfolio and privacy protection aspects. I have worked in healthcare business for almost ten years now, starting as a legal advisor in small legal counsel firm and as an advisor to the board in a large hospital. This winter I participated in the Management Acceleration Programme, which was a very rewarding experience in learning and developing management skills and meeting and working with so many different nationalities. In my free time I like travelling, running, photography and cooking. I look forward to participate in the IAA events. Matthaeus Rimpler (MBA’7J) I am Matthaeus Rimpler, a German citizen, living in Amsterdam since 2010. I hold a doctor of medicine degree from the Heidelberg Medical School, The Georgetown University (USA) and the University of Cape Town. After Medical School, I worked as an oncology doctor in Berlin, before joining Roland Berger Strategy Consultants. In 2006/2007 I went to INSEAD (sponsored by Roland Berger) and returned to Germany after. In 2010, I joined Philips in Amsterdam and my current role is Head of Strategy & New Business Development for Central & Eastern Europe (17 countries, from Baltics to Balkan/Greece). In my free time, I enjoy being on the water, mainly on my kiteboard. Marinus Wisselink (TGM’12D) Born in 1965, I am married with two sons and a daughter (age 7, 6 and 4). Living in Broek in Waterland we combine the best of two worlds: typically Dutch countryside with the heart beat of Amsterdam just minutes away. My current position is Company Secretary of Tata Steel Nederland BV. Based in IJmuiden, I report to the Chairmen of both the Board of Management and the Supervisory Board. I am leading the Secretariat and as such responsible for managing all the information flows to these Boards, execution of their decisions, safeguarding of cash pool arrangements and maintaining good relationships with all stakeholders. All this is within an international setting with our European HQ in London and our global HQ in Mumbai. My first exposure to INSEAD was at Finance for Executives in 2010. Last year I attended Transition to General Management. What brought me back to Fontainebleau was the data driven teaching, the quality of the faculty, the openness for debate and the truly international student population. In my free time I go mountain climbing, with currently a focus on big walls (800+m rock faces). Off the wall I like the arts, geopolitics, tennis, boating and life.
