The comments have been very positive. Although the exposure the Moth World Regatta brought to KYC is immeasurable, so far the bar is experiencing a nice surge in sales. Our portion from Private Parties catered to the regatta is in excess of $1,200 not counting the Snack Bar sales. The Club and the membership are sharing the positive impact of this regatta. We awarded the contract to Commercial Roofing to repair our flat and tile roof with a silicone type of sealant with 10-year warranty. They started priming the Upper Deck Roof. We had to get them started as time is of the essence. We need to complete the roof so that we can install the PV system before the end of the year. They were very careful to avoid any damage to the Moths. They have done the Upper Deck roof and started the rest on Monday, October 21 so the working is ongoing. The fans in the Longhouse have been replaced with better working fans. Now we are able to adjust fan speed and dim the lights appropriately. All the sewer lines under the parking lot were inspected by video. Found some places were sagging but OK to pave over. None of the sewer lines are cracked. We have added another big screen TV for the bar. Remember the Annual Membership Meeting on Friday, November 1 at 6PM and Commodores Ball on December 14. 2013 is slowly sailing into the sunset. The Deckhands and Entertainment Committee put on two outstanding events, the Keiki Halloween Party and the Adult Halloween Party respectively. The ghost and goblins were out in force, the kids were screaming and the adults were dancing. I saw Clark Kent on one side of the long house and Superman on the other. How did he do that? There was Super Girl, Bat Man, Bula'ea and a Cheerleader all under the same roof; I’d say we were pretty safe that night. Well, in other words, if there were to be a brawl, at least we had our Cheerleader and Bula'ea to keep the crowd motivated. It was a great day for all of our members to come out and enjoy our club. We are currently at 100% senior membership in our club; please continue sponsoring new prospective members. Due to attrition we might not have to start a waitlist for new members. We had the sewer lines in the front parking lot "scoped" before we spend money in repaving. The scoping revealed no damage so it’s onto the parking lot paving next. I’d like to say thank you to our Rear Commodore Tom Pochereva and his team for putting on an outstanding World Moth event. I cannot start to tell you what this has done for our club; let’s just say we put our mark on the map. Great job team! Looking forward to seeing all of you around the club or in the water, Chico Rear Commodore Tom Pochereva Aloha KYC members and families, October was a very busy month at Kaneohe Yacht Club with the Sir Thomas Lipton One Design Challenge Cup, the International Moth World Championship and the Cal 20 State Championship. Kaneohe Yacht Club is a vital part to the health of Hawaii’s boating and sailing community. Thank you all for your support of our club. The Club is now starting refurbishments to the roof and other key infrastructure such resurfacing the club’s road ways. While this work is being done please take care as you move around the club. Things may not always be where you expect them and a little caution will make the club safer for all. This time of year continues to be busy for our members as fleets wrap up their seasons with tournaments, events and celebrations. The clubs annual awards banquet date is being changed to Saturday, December 7 so please watch for update notices. As noted last month plans are underway by the Haul-out Fleet for the annual maintenance of many members’ boats. The north dock work area will become congested. Visibility will be hampered and children should be reminded this is not a play area. Everyone’s co-operation will be greatly appreciated. GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING FRIDAY NOVEMBER 1, 2013 6PM Chico's Trivia Corner: Q – The point of sail perpendicular to the wind (90 degrees off the wind) is: Sailing across the wind on a run, beam reach or broad reach? A – beam reach. Q – A sheet is: a sail, a line that controls a sail, furls and unfurls a sail or a reefing line? A – A line that controls a sail. Q – True wind is what you feel once the boat gets up to full speed. True or False? Joe Cochran Memorial Channel Race A - False, true wind is what exists without any boat speed. Q – You're sailing a two masted boat with the mizzen mast located forward of the steering post. What type of boat are you on? Sunday November 3, 2013 A -A Ketch; the ketch and the yawl both have a mizzen mast, aft of the main mast, but the mizzen mast on a yawl is located aft of the steering post. The easy way to remember which is which is that 'k' comes before 'y'. 1100-1130 Registration in the Ma Schultz Lounge 1130 Skippers’ Meeting in the Lounge 1255 Warning Signal for the first of staggered starts. 1300 First Start Post Racing – Celebration, all KYC members welcome to join Q – The rigging which exerts side forces to keep the mast vertical is the what? A – Shrouds; check your shroud tension. Loose shrouds are one of the main causes of dismasting. 3 Aloha Members and Families, Thank you all very much for contributing to the success of the 2013 McDOUGALL + McCONAGHY International Moth World Championships. In return, the club played host to many of the world’s top sailors; KYC member Ian Andrewes, awarded US Sailing's Hanson Medal for a rescue on San Franciso Bay as part of America's Youth Sailing Force on July 17; For some who were involved in the America’s Cup like Outteridge and Adam May; Multihull ‘Yoda’ Loick Peyron; Past winners such as Josh McKnight, Simon Payne and, Bora Gulari (this year's winner); 3 time Volvo Ocean Race sailor, International 14 and 18 ft. Skiff World Champion Rob Greenhalgh; and, Sailors from Olympic, national and international campaigns from 15 countries around the world. This type of undertaking took considerable planning, preparation and implementation by a very active and significant part of the club’s membership. Members of our club, the staff, catering, guests and other Hawaii yacht clubs stepped in with time and/or equipment to make this event happen. These people all played an important part in making sure that regatta events ran smoothly every day from the time people arrived, during the racing and until the last boat was packed up at the end of the championship. It is a remarkable team that we have here and it is very special to be able to work with all of you. Again, thank you, Sincerely, Tom Pochereva, PRO Photo: Thierry Martinez Photo: Tom Pochereva Commodore Chuck Cotton, Bora Gulari, Vice Commodore Chico Cantu Photo: Thierry Martinez Photo: Thierry Martinez Photo: Thierry Martinez Bora Gulari, 2013 National Champion and 2013 World Champion takes time out to give junior sailor Malia Johnson a ride on the Moth. Photo: Dani Photo: Thierry Martinez Cal 20 Fleet Jeff Cruise Aloha from the Cal 20 Fleet, The last two regattas of the season, Lipton One Design and State Keel Boat Championships, took place this October. Lipton One Design was sailed by a representative boat from each yacht club in Hawaii. In total, eleven boats completed 8 races in great winds over the course of two days. Congratulations to John Myrdal and Scott Melander, representing Hawaii Laser Association, on their first place victory. Close behind was Keahi Ho and Bobo Stanford from Maui Boat and Yacht Club in second, and Andy Johnson and Corey LarRieu from Kaneohe Yacht Club in third. State Keel Boat Championships took place in extremely shifty and difficult conditions. At various times throughout the regatta, we had no wind, thunder, lightning, rain, and winds out of every possible direction. The race committee certainly had their hands full dealing with it, and did a great job getting races off. A total of 5 races were completed over two days. Three points separated 1st and 3rd place overall. Congratulations to John Myrdal and Andrew McDonald on their victory. Following close behind was Marc Barra and Rich Reilly in second, and Ken Kaan and Mike Scott in third. In addition to some awesome racing, we had a great barbeque for the fleet Saturday evening, organized by fleet social chairs Katie Cruise and Kerri Schwiebert. It’s was a great season this year, and we look forward to getting back to racing in early 2014. Thanks to the competitors, race committee volunteers, and Kaneohe Yacht Club for all the support. The Board of Directors changed the rules a few years ago to require every vessel, including kayaks and dinghies, dry or wet moored at the Club, to complete a trip at least as far as Coconut Island and back twice in a calendar quarter, but not in the same month. Kayaks and the like may substitute the Coral Patch for Coconut Island. They were trying to insure the increased use of Club moored boats. The penalty for not signing the Movement Log is $100 for the first incident, $200 for the second and loss of the slip for the third failure to sign in any two-year period. There is a mercy provision in the event something serious happens to you, provided you notify me ahead of the close of the calendar quarter. Accounting receives the log upon the closing of the quarter and it is out of my hands. A letter to the Board of Directors is the next step, explaining to them why you could not move the boat twice in the same quarter. The Moth class racers are gone (for the most part). Although we lost a lot of car parking, the regatta went off without too much disruption. The next major planned event will be Pacific Cup, mid-year 2014. There will be signs posted, and volunteers can pick and choose a committee to work with. This is essentially a one-week event at the Club, but often takes more time. I think we will have the maximum of 70 boats, but some will drop out between now and the start. Another reminder, Haul-out season begins November 2, with the set up party and the first haul will be November 16. There will be very limited space in the work area for smaller boats, so plan your boat maintenance needs accordingly. There are 54 shopping days to Christmas. Wounded Warriors In September some of the Wounded Warriors and their families from Kaneohe Marine Base enjoyed a beautiful and relaxing "day on the bay." The Deckhands sponsor these events two or three times a year with the help of KYC mariners and other members. A big mahalo to Don Brown, who rounded up the float boats and capable crew. Thanks to Bob Fram, who offered his boat and himself for the day, and also to crew members, Bob Palmer, Bill Bachmann,Bob Hurd and Ron Dodini.
