Commodore
Chico Cantu
Hi everyone, Summer Time is here! It’s time
to dust off the cob webs from your boat, kayak or
SUP and come on down to KYC to enjoy our
club. Don’t forget to recheck any required
documents to make sure they are available and up
to date. I predict plenty of family outings around
the club, on the sand bar and even at secret beach.
Whatever your flavor is, I wish all of you a safe and non-eventful summer.
Speaking of enjoying yourself, we had two highly patronized
entertainment events this month. Our Cinco de Mayo celebration was
packed with sombreros, a limbo line and of course a hot chili pepper
eating contest. I would like to thank our Vice Commodore Tom Pochereva
for being the first volunteer in the pepper contest. I too volunteered but
was attacked by a giant jalapeño….the pepper won. It would be wrong not
to mention a mysterious female who came from the crowd, ate all peppers
in nothing flat, then faded into the crowd again. Who was that masked
man; or in this case, masked woman. Great job by all! Got milk!
The other phenomenal event we had was our Summer Wine Festival.
The longhouse was packed with 130 plus members enjoying wine, food
and fellowship. Definitely one of our best entertainment events of the
year; so far.
Get ready, here it comes. Our 17th Annual Kaneohe Yacht Club
Summer Circuit commences on Sunday, June 1st with other races on June
8th and 22nd. Pacific Cup is next month and we have a plethora of events
scheduled for you during that week so please mark your calendar and
come on down and enjoy the festivities. Our committee chairs are starting
to conduct training in their areas of responsibility and we are still in need
of volunteers during the graveyard shifts. If you can help it would be
greatly appreciated, please contact Kim Ickler.
Our Board of Directors continues to work diligently to improve our
club, if you have any suggestions please let us know.
Looking forward to seeing all of you around the club or in the water,
Chico
Rear Commodore
Richard Perkins
Now that we are in June, let’s hope that the
summer trade winds are back to stay. The IRF
Summer Circuit kicks off on June 1st to start a very
busy summer sailing season. The Summer Circuit
Regatta is expected to attract 20+ boats on three
Sundays in June. Rick Osborne has done another
great job in organizing this very popular regatta.
Other fleet events during June are the ORF Fleet Double Handed Race - June
14 and the ClassBoat Fleet I-1 Race - June 29. It doesn’t stop there as in July
the Kalakaua Cup Race is on July 4th weekend and then the club hosts the
Pacific Cup. This year will be the largest Pacific Cup since 2008 with 62 boats
and over 300 racers. Volunteers are still needed so if you are interested in
volunteering sign up on the Pacific Cup board at the club. The first start from
San Francisco begins on July 6 and the staggered starts continue to July 11
with the first boats expected to finish around July 20.
June also starts the Junior Summer Fun program that includes not only
sailing but tennis and swimming activities. Jesse has been very busy setting
up these events that start June 2 and go to the end of July. Friday night El Toro
Races are in full swing and provide a great opportunity for the junior sailors
and others to improve their racing skills.
The website committee continues to work on improving the club’s
website. If you have been to the site lately you probably notice a “Public
Website under Construction” message as more improvements are on the way
Vice Commodore
Tom Pochereva
This month our members enjoyed some
spectacular weekends with sunshine, calm winds
and great events like the Summer Wine Festival.
For those that attended the Festival, Southern
Wine and Spirits sampled a large number of
wines to temp the taste buds with whites and reds
from around the Pacific Basin. Naupaka
Caterers put on a feast for the almost 140 attendees. Remember to sign
up early for these really fabulous evenings.
On the horizon is the Biennial Pacific Cup. For those wishing the
join the volunteer teams, sign-up sheets are in the front lobby (check
Telltales as well). Also, please note that if you wish to attend any of
the events you’ll have to do this online. You may wish to check out the
new Pacific Cup website at https://pacificcup.org/about. There are great
parties almost all week long. One of the highlights is the Cerebral Palsy
Plywood Cup which takes place Saturday July 26th after the Delivery
Skipper's Briefing.
Around the club there are a number of maintenance issues
underway. The port cochere - the front entrance - is being resurfaced
and should be completed by the time you read this. A new awning is
coming for June as well as the replacement of the North Hoist. Please
take care as you move around these areas as things may be out of place
for a period of time. Also, during the summer months our club is
exceptionally busy at the pool, bulkhead and in the harbor so keep an
eye out for youngsters, paddle boarders and boats as they arrive or
depart.
Lastly a word about work parties… The club insurance policies
take into account volunteer activities including work parties. So please
be encouraged to volunteer and lend a hand. The rumor that you should
not volunteer due to liability issues is false.
I look forward to seeing you at our events and enjoying our many
activities and facilities.
to move more content to the Public side. The next website workshop will be
held on June 23rd for all fleet captains and others who were interested in
updating content on the website. An email invite will be sent out shortly.
The Tennis Fleet continues with their monthly tournament and potluck.
The next tournament and potluck with a catered Hawaiian theme is scheduled
for June 21st.
A following are members of the new Mooring Committee appointed by
Chico:
Chuck Cotton
Tom Pochereva
Ron Dodini
Lou Ickler
Don Brown
Dick Perkins
The committee will assist the Port Captain (Bob Hurd) in monitoring boat
movement as well as other mooring violations.
Bill “Noddle” Leary left on Moku pe’a on April 27 for another adventure
to the South Pacific. If you interested to following his progress, he is posting
updates to his blog mokupea.blogspot.com. It is interesting reading.

PACIFIC CUP UPDATE
As July draws near, we can proudly announce that this year's Fun
Race to Hawaii, The Pacific Cup, with the first boats starting on July 6,
is the largest in several races. Count 'em – 62 boats, over 300 racers, a
new Holoholo Crusing Division, 2 multihulls, and a 92 footer! If you'll
be in the San Francisco Bay Area any time from July 1 to July 11, try to
make your way to Richmond Yacht Club and visit the new Pacific Cup
Village. There will be events all week long leading up to the Bon Voyage
Party on July 5. Tickets are available on the Pacific Cup website at
www.pacificcup.org.
Here at KYC, our Committee Chairs have begun scheduling for the
week of July 17 to 25, and training sessions are underway. Volunteers
are still being welcomed on most committees, find your preference on
the board at the club or on the KYC website, get in touch and sign up
to help! It's a great time to get know other club members and great
visitors from the mainland.
Of course, here at KYC, we've got a few parties of our own planned.
Thanks to the hard work of Cathy Pratt, KYC's aloha spirit will shine
through. All tickets for the events must be purchased on line at
www.pacificcup.org. Prices increase on July 6, so get your tickets early.
You'll pick up your tickets or wristbands at KYC after July 19.
A SPECIAL REQUEST FROM THE
MOORING COMMITTEE
Aloha Wet Slip Holders,
As you are probably aware, the Pacific Cup Yacht Race is
just around the corner.
The Mooring Committee is writing to request your
assistance in possibly making your slip available for use by the
visiting yachts from San Francisco and other areas.
Perhaps this would be an appropriate time to schedule your
annual "haul out".
If you are able to assist us in this manner, please contact
Bob Hurd, Port Captain, at 808-291-7001 to advise him of the
availability of your slip for this period of time.
Ideally, the window of time that we will need your
assistance is between July 17 to July 26.
We appreciate your help in this matter.
Sincerely,
The Mooring Committee

Commodore Chico Cantu exchanges club burgees with Kathy Curtis,
a member of the Lake Guntersville Yacht Club.
Lake Guntersville Yacht Club, Alabama
The beginning, in 1940 a group of boaters, most of whom owned cabins on
the newly formed lake, met to discuss forming a boating club. A fish fry was
held at the old Gunter Home on Preston Island and 150 people came. There
were four 25’ cruisers, four runabouts and a few outboard fishing boats.

So you see, lots of activity will be happening around the club. We
hope you'll join us as a volunteer and at all these fun events!
Port Captain
Bob Hurd
Aloha.
The North hoist will be replaced on or about
Monday, June 9. The job may stretch into the
week, so please plan your haul-out requests
around the dates June 9 to June 14.
Speaking of the work area, the Marina
Regulations state that this area is reserved for those Club members who
have a wet or dry slip at the Club and is by appointment only. Call me
if you want to use this area, and I will see if I can schedule a time and
location for your project. Please provide me with the dates requested,
type of work, the expected duration, and who is going to perform the
work. A copy of the Best Maintenance Practices is available at the Club
office to guide you on how to do your work.
Pacific Cup is coming up again this year. The Pacific Cup Mooring
Committee will be looking for club members who are willing to lend
their slip to the escort boats and racers for about a 2-week period. I am
not a member of this committee; you can address your concerns about
mooring to Mike Barker or Ralph Foulger during the race itself. I will
take over the harbor again after the last day of celebrations. Do not plan
to invite boating guests during the race period. I do not have the exact
dates, but plan arrivals from July 17 through July 25.
I have been looking at the mooring lines and electrical connections
on the piers again, and have found only a few that need attention. Letters
about mooring deficiencies are a heads up for the slip holder, and not
meant to be punitive. The Club provides the eye bolts on the piers, and
the slip holder is solely responsible for the remainder of the mooring
gear. It is very easy to overlook flaws in mooring gear that has served
you well over the years. If you see your neighbor’s gear has a flaw, tell
him directly or call me if it needs immediate attention. Eyebolts will be
replaced by Maintenance upon a request to the office. The un-official
Foul Weather Friends volunteers patrol the piers as a courtesy to other
members upon the approach of a major storm. You may hear from them
about your mooring before or during a weather event.
Stay safe, have fun, and I’ll see you on the water.
Aloha,
Adult sailing classes will be offered again at KYC,
taught on a Cal 20 June 2nd, 9th, 16th and ending on
June 23rd. The class times are 9am until 12 noon.
Cost is $180 for members and $230 for non-members.
Please contact the KYC office at 247-4121 if you
would like to sign up.

The look on Jesse’s face was priceless. When all the FJs and
420s were pulled out, there still weren't enough boats!!
Who won? Who knows? We had to swap out crews so that
everyone got a chance to sail.
Word is out. First Tuesdays are the place to be this summer to
get your dinghy fever fix. Look for some team racing in the near
future.
I’m still feeling a little dinghy.
Next First Tuesday is June 3rd. Mark your calendar, you won’t
want to miss it.

2014 International 14 PAC RIM
Championships
and Hawaii State Championships
Kaneohe, HI (April 26-29, 2014)
By Andy Bates
The I-14s have come and raced at Kaneohe YC for the eighth time.
Local club volunteers, led by PRO Clark Fremgen put on an outstanding
four day regatta for 20 boats that were sponsored by Horizon Lines with
additional support from West Marine and Big Foot Trapeze from
Australia. Competitors from the mainland, Canada, Australia, and the
UK participated. The PAC RIM series had nine races (all counted in the
scoring) in a wide range of conditions. The first day saw strong 20 knot
trades with a 30 plus knot plus squall in the middle of the afternoon.
The second and third days had shifty moderate 10-14 knot northerly
winds. The racing was close with all the leaders having up and down
finishes during the first two days. Going into the final day of the series
four boats were bunched at the top of the leader board. The racing was
exciting as different boats led during the back and forth
windward/leeward legs that had big holes in the wind. In the end Brad
Ruetnik and Garrett Brom from San Diego prevailed. This is Brad’s
second PAC RIM victory. Former World Champions (and PAC RIM
winners!) Kris Bundy and Jamie Hensler finished in second place two
points back and Terry Gleeson and Evan Sjostedt were third. Evan also
won the youngest sailor award. The Bundy/Hensler team won the
combined over 100 years old award that six teams qualified for. Lauren
Laventure and Jason Lemieux won the first female home trophy. This
was one of the best PAC RIM racing conditions over three days ever
sailed and there was only one general recall the entire time. Clark and
his team did an outstanding job.
The I-14 Junior sail training event took place on Sunday morning.
This Ecoflag (gsa.org) sponsored event has been a part of the program
from start. The weather cooperated and the on the water event was a
huge success as 15 top sailors from different Junior programs around the
state participated. The ashore session started at 10AM with tacking drills
and rigging familiarity. Then five of the most advanced boats and sailors
including eventual PAC RIM winner Brad Reutenik took Junior sailors
out on the bay for amazingly fast rides on the most modern up to date
racing skiffs in the world. Kites were set and trapeze work refined. The
wind was perfect as the float boat was used to rotate the sailors on and
off the boats. Everybody got a good ride. The The Global Sports
Alliance through the Ecoflag movement promotes clean air and clean
water through sporting events worldwide. It is the environmental arm of
the Sony Corporation. The sailing community and the International
Fourteen Class have supported this organization for 15 years. Our local
sponsors Horizon Lines and West Marine are proud to be part of this
environmental and socially aware movement.
Three local I-14s sailed during the week. Elise Leroux and Doug
Gordon completed all the races---Well Done. Tom Pochereva and
Shelley James had a boom break down and missed Day 2 but came back
to win the Hawaii State Championship race. Cecilia Jansson and Brad
Cole crewed on mainland boats and gained lots of invaluable
experience. Fred Berg sailed in the Hawaii State Championship race.
The local fleet gained two more 14s that did not return to the mainland
in the containers. Our local KYC fleet continues to grow. For those
interested in joining the fleet see any of the members for information.
We race with the Cal 20s on Class Boat days.
As mentioned above----For the first time ever the International
Fourteen Hawaii State Championship Pursuit race run in conjunction
with a PAC RIM regatta was won by a local fleet member! Tom
Pochereva and Shelley James led from start to finish sailing a flawless
race in moderate 10-12 knot breeze from the northeast. The course took
the fleet from the yacht club bulkhead, around F, up to A, out into the
ocean by way of the Sampan Channel, around R2, back down the
channel to an orange turning mark, down the bay almost to the sandbar
to another orange turning mark and back to the club Beer Can finish
line for a 12 mile “Kaneohe Bay tour”. Mickey Radjowski and Emma
sailing Chris Rutz’s Bieker 5 started seventh and finished in second
place. They sailed a very strong ocean leg and chased Tom and Shelley
all the way to the finish. Cameron Puckey and Richard Didham were
third to finish and had the fourth fastest boat around the course.
Canadians Greg Loffree and Zac Baum barely beat fellow Canadians
Lauren Laventure and Jason Lemieux by 2 seconds at the finish for
fourth place. The fastest boat around the course was PAC RIM winners
Brad Reutenik and Garrett Brom in 1 hour 23 minutes and 27 seconds.
They were followed by Steve Goodson and Alan Diercks who finished
13 seconds later for second place in the overall elapsed time category.
The race was sailed in picture perfect weather. A short awards
presentation followed by a pizza and beer lunch concluded the day. The
boats were loaded back in to the containers for the trip home. Special
THANKS TO ALL the volunteers and staff at the club for another super
successful dinghy regatta at KYC. We hope to see a bigger fleet back in
2016. ALOHA.

FINISHED TIME WINNER!
Glenn D. Clark Jr., and Chip Gunther on Valcour #488
Ernest “Chip” Gunther
September 12, 1923 - March 22, 2014
Pilot, Sailor, Friend
Sailing with Chip Gunther
By Glenn D. Clark Jr.
In 1975 KYC was very active with several fleets sailing
weekends on beautiful Kaneohe Bay. Stars, Lightnings, Thistles,
MPs and Cal 20s made up most of the participants that raced against
each other on weekends. On a good weekend the above fleets would
have about sixty boats on the water.
The KYC Race Committee kept the events moving and over
the many years of governing and overseeing races was honored two
times for the years as being Outstanding Race Committee. The RC
received the St. Petersburg Yacht Club Trophy of Recognition for
Outstanding Race Committe e Operations, twice, once for
Kenwood Cup and second for Kaneohe Yacht Club.
Some skippers were changing fleets, selling their present boats
and moving to another fleet. Many boats changed ownership from
1972 - 1975.
I sold my Thistle to a sailor in Oregon and shipped it up by
barge! We ended up with a Cal 20 #488. I was working at this time
on the Honolulu waterfront.
Chip Gunther was also a casual person on the waterfront, as
he had become an employee of a small group of maritime surveyors
and inspectors of problems that required investigation and analysis.
It was at one such investigation that I met him and summarily
invited him to sail with me at KYC, where I had observed him
crewing on other sailboats. He joined KYC in 1975.
We sailed the Cal 20 in many races on the bay - just outside
in the ocean and to and from races off Waikiki and Pearl Harbor. We
had more than our fair share of winning races and also some
mistakes and bad decisions, which of course made all our
competitors in our fleet happy they had beaten us. Heck, one time
off Waikiki we were so far back the Rhodes 19 fleet from Lou
Foster’s Hickham Harbor finished ahead of us. We made a whole
fleet of sailors very happy that day!
Chip was always available for crewing or sailing from Kaneohe
to Waikiki and even bringing the rugged 20 footer back up the SW
coast of Oahu in normal trades.
Occasionally we had a third crew member for the off shore trip,
but with Chip on board I felt comfortable with just the two of us
sailing it.
One trip back from Waikiki we missed a severe change in wind
off Koko Head. We had flown our radial chute from Diamond Head
buoy to just off the entrance to Hawaii Kai Boat Harbor and wham
the wind stopped and changed 180º in seconds and the spinnaker
was totally and throughly wrapped on the headstay. It was a very
long time before it was down and out of the way!
When it came time to paint or repair Chip was always around.
We had lots of success and I think between my iceboating days
and Chip flying from his youth to his retirement in over fifteen
different types of trainers and fighters we did have some idea of
wind and sailing!
When I announced in 1984 that I was going to sell the Cal 20
and retire, Chip found another crewing job in the fleet and sailed up
to the time he could no longer do it safely or with any confidence.
Both Chip and Norma were fine all around sailors and will be
missed by many of us.They must have had something planned
because just two days after Chip passed away, Norma did also.
