With loss, family and friends feel the need to carry on the legacy or tribute to a loved one. Maybe your loved one always wanted something changed in the community, maybe that person had a strong passion for a certain area of interest or program, or maybe that person never received recognition for an accomplishment(s) in their lifetime. A memorial gift is a special way to honor your loved one—year after year—and at the same time, do good things in the community in their name. When a gift is made to an endowment fund in memory of an individual, a card is sent by the Community Foundation to the family of the deceased, indicating that a gift has been made in their memory. We remember the following individuals who were recognized through thoughtful memorial gifts to the Community Foundation this past fiscal year: Alfred F. Born in Battle Creek, she worked for her father at his restaurant starting at age 11 and graduated from Lakeview High School in 1955. She then attended the University of Michigan and was a member of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority. She married Jerry Hill on July 6, 1957 and they moved to Cuba for a while as Jerry served in the military. After returning to Battle Creek, she raised three sons and began her lifelong devotion to volunteerism and community service. Over the decades she served as a board trustee at many organizations, including S.A.F.E. Place of Battle Creek, the American Lung Association, Planned Parenthood of Southwest Michigan, Lakeview Schools Educational Foundation and the Cereal Museum. She distinguished the Battle Creek Community Foundation’s board of trustees as its first female chair. After suffering a heart attack in 1981, many expected Barb to slow down and take it easy, but that was not her style. She continued to selflessly serve for another 31 years, earning a “volunteer of the year” award just three days before she passed away. Though she spent much time in Glen, Michigan, and wintering in Hutchinson Island, Florida, her friends and beloved causes in Battle Creek were never far from her heart. Her legacy of taking action to benefit her community will continue to live on for many years to come. funds held community project funds Community Project Funds are non-endowed funds held at the Battle Creek Community Foundation for various projects, groups, and organizations within the Battle Creek area. Through a Donor Advised Fund, you can have an active hand in your charitable giving, as well as suggest which organizations should be supported, such as your high school or college, church, or other favorite charity. Many donors send out several donations throughout the year to different charities of their choice. Having a Donor Advised Fund takes the burden off the donor, as the Community Foundation does all the work in reviewing the charitable need and sending the grant to the charity suggested by the donor. This type of fund is a great way to stay involved in the use of your gift! *** Denotes new funds established between April 1, 2011 and May 31, 2012 Angelcheeks Foundation Fund Arnesby-Mawby Fund Jerry and Rita Askler Fund Avery Family Fund Michael W. Christ In 2011, the board and staff of the Battle Creek Community Foundation undertook the creation of an endowment fund for operating expenses for the Community Foundation. Each year this endowment fund will have an honorary named trustee, as a way to honor our volunteer trustees who have selflessly given to the Community Foundation. Our first honoree is Chris T. Christ, who has served as a trusted representative and connected countless individuals to grow our Community Foundation. For more than 30 years, Chris has been promoting, guiding and connecting businesses, foundations, families and individuals to the work and options available for their engagement and giving to the Community Foundation. He “officially” served as Trustee from 1982 – 1996, and served as the Chair of the Board and on many committees. His leadership and assistance in addressing the health needs of our community serves as a national model. “My years with the Community Foundation have been meaningful and memorable,” says Chris. “It has been a great privilege and honor to work with so many dedicated people to help make our community a place to live, work, and raise a family.” It is our honor to recognize Chris T. Christ as the first Honorary Named Trustee of the endowment fund that is being created to support the operations of the Battle Creek Community Foundation. His name will appear in perpetuity along with future honorees. Interested in learning more about The Forever Fund? Give us a call at 269.962.2181. Center, he now works as a substitute teacher, ambassador program For years, the Battle Creek Community Foundation was known as the community’s “Best Kept Secret.” The Ambassador Program was implemented to help spread the word about the special opportunities available at the Community Foundation. An Ambassador is one who spreads the word about the Battle Creek Community Foundation—in their own environment, at their own pace, and at a level in which they are comfortable. Currently, there are more than 300 individuals participating in the Ambassador Program. Becoming an Ambassador is easy: attend two trainings and you receive your Official Ambassador pin. A training consists of joining the Community Foundation for lunch or dinner at a host organization in the community where attendees learn about the facility and the activities of that organization. Once individuals receive their Official Ambassador status, they may start earning their jewels to become a “Jeweled Ambassador.” The “Royal Ambassador” is the highest level and has earned all five jewels. Thanks to our Ambassadors, Battle Creek Community Foundation’s work is no longer a secret. Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance. — Robert F.
