Torrey Pines Drive, Las Vegas NV; 89118 www.ctklv.org ~ (702) 871-1904 ~ Fax: (702) 251-4935 March 31, 2013 ~ Easter Sunday of the Resurrection of the Lord Today’s Readings First Reading — Peter is an eyewitness: The Lord is risen (Acts 10:34a, 37-43). Psalm — This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad (Psalm 118). (1) Second Reading — All who are baptized, set your hearts on heaven (Colossians 3:1-4) or (2) Second Reading — Christ our Passover is sacri-ficed; therefore let us celebrate (1 Corinthians 5:6b-8). Gospel — Three witnesses, Mary, Peter, and John; each responds to the empty tomb (John 20:1-9) or Luke 24:1-12 (or, at an afternoon or evening Mass, Luke 24:13-35). MASS TIMES SATURDAY: 4:00 pm SUNDAY: 7:30, 9:30, 11:30am, 5:00 pm & 7:00 pm (Misa en Español) WEEKDAYS: Mon - Sat ~ 8:00 am HOLY DAYS: 8:00 am EASTER ENERGY On Easter morning when the disciples saw the evidence of the Resurrection, they did not at first grasp it. John reports that “they did not yet understand the Scripture that he had to rise from the dead.” We, on the other hand, have both scripture and church tradition to teach us. Jesus Christ’s resurrection is at the core of our Christian faith. All of today’s readings tell us how compelling this event was for the first Christians. There is great energy in all the readings. Peter preaches with authority and conviction. Paul calls for Christians to change their lives. In the Gospel reading we see Peter and John in a footrace to reach Jesus’ tomb and see with their own eyes the evidence that they still could not understand or completely believe. How can some of this Easter energy be restored to us today? Do we let the astonishing news of the Resurrection touch us now? Does it call us to action? To deeper faith? To conversion? What new life will be reborn in us and our parish community this Easter morning? Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. Ray Happy Easter to all! This wonderful season of the Church requires a tremendous amount of participation from a pool of many ministries, staff, and volunteers. It would be indecent to not to offer gratitude for many long hours of preparation for the celebrations of the Triduum (The Three Days). I know sometimes it is difficult to pick and choose those that give CTK 100% of their best towards our Liturgies, but it takes a whole village to come together in order to celebrate the quality of worship we have here at Christ the King. I would like to acknowledge first the people that constantly work in the shadows and behind the scenes. Thank you Mark Medina (Maintenance) for coordinating the many changes from one season to another, and always being available to aid our staff and volunteers in preparing our worship space and social gathering spaces in and out of the seasons of the Church. I would like to acknowledge our Hospitality Ministry for their sweet and tender care of our attendees to all our services, and for their dedication and love of our Parish. I thank them especially for their consistent attention to our visitors and for making them feel welcomed and making a difference in many people’s lives by simply smiling at them and saying hello. I would like to thank Deacon Jacob for being the best Assistant Administrator a Pastor could have. He has truly been a gift from God to our Parish, and has been nothing less than a huge support to me and to the rest of the staff here at CTK. I would also like to acknowledge our Religious Education Department for Beth Thompson, Jason Ealy, and Robyn Runco for endlessly coordinating the many needs of the education of our children and adults. I thank them for the many tasks in preparation of the Sacraments and most of all for the dedication to their work and the support of each other in their endeavors to keep a high end level and quality Religious Education Department. I would like to thank our Liturgy Ministry for the countless hours and devotion to our worship, and for the support volunteers that run our sound and lights under the direction of Bob LaPorte and his assistants. How can I possibly even begin to thank our wonderful musicians that always give us the best of their skills and awesome Liturgical experiences? To all of you that contribute your time, talent and treasure….from the bottom of my heart….thank you. With much love . . Fr. At the time, I’d been laid off, evicted, divorced and attempting to leave LV to go to Florida, when I fell. As new children of Christ, my daughters and I were terrified. Easter eggs have a very ancient pedigree: nature’s perfect package, emblem of new life, dyed and decorated and given as gifts in ancient Egypt, Rome, China, and Persia. Just as the long hard winter is over, the egg bursts with promise of life and nourishment. Long ago, Christians came to see the egg not as a symbol of spring’s rebirth, but of ours, and as a sign of Christ’s tomb. A Polish legend says that Mary, in compassion for the soldiers at the cross, gave them eggs, but that her tears stained their shells with brilliant color. Legends have their origin in tales told around a hearth, but they often contain a profound truth. The idea of Mary, the first Christian, engaged in a merciful act of forgiveness and tenderness even in the shadow of the cross, describes the age-old wish that Christ “Easter in us.” —Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. Alleluia, Alleluia, Jesus Christ is Risen! Jesus is our Lord and Savior; all glory, honor and praise be to our Lord God Almighty. Let Jesus truly be Lord of your life and your Marriage. Allow God’s grace, mercy, compassion, and love to transform your marriage. Sign up today to attend the next Worldwide Marriage The next weekends are May 3 - 5 and September 27-29 in the Las Vegas area. Early registration is highly recommended. Reflecting on God’s Word I can remember as a child being afraid of the dark. Not all the time . . . just usually after seeing a horror movie. For nights after, I would peer into the darkness, trying to make sure there was nothing out there. Even as an adult there have been times when I walked through a dark place feeling an uneasiness that was hard to shake. Easter in the Gospel of John begins in the dark. Night still holds the earth in its embrace. Darkness also gripped the hearts of Jesus’ followers . . . the darkness of grief, sorrow, and hopelessness. Jesus of Nazareth . . . who had preached in a way no one else ever had, who had worked deeds of great power by curing the sick, healing lepers, giving sight to the blind, lifting up the lame, and who had even called the dead back to life . . . had been crucified and laid in the tomb. A large stone had been rolled in front of the entrance, death’s final punctuation mark. Only John tells us there was a garden where he was crucified, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had ever been laid. From this garden God decided to begin creation anew, so while it was still dark God breathed once again into a human figure, and the new Adam was raised up and would never die. Not all darkness is to be feared. Sometimes it may even be necessary, summoning God to create once again, dispelling the shadow of death and despair that can settle over the human heart. —James A. Today, today, let us rejoice and be glad today!” (Ps. 118 – R. Cooney) Here we are at the end of our Lenten journey for 2013, at the empty tomb of the RESURRECTION. We joyfully sing out with the psalmist the words of Psalm 118 as this truly is the day of our longing and hoping. We pray that your Lenten experience has borne fruit in your spiritual life. If you are just that much more loving, forgiving, patient, living more in hope than fear, etc. then our liturgy and prayer together has been blessed. For this we thank God. As we look forward to the coming weeks of the Easter season, leading up to Pentecost, may the mystery of Christ’s resurrection unfold in your life. May you be opened to the unexpected opportunities for growth and give yourself over to the Spirit working in your lives. All of us within our Liturgy Department along with the staff and the Liturgy Committee wish you a HAPPY BLESSED EASTER! Catechesis of the Good Shepherd News For young adults married/single, kids/no kids We have studied the geography of Israel, the Synthesis of the Mass and are now aware of the parables and the miracles of Jesus – it is time to study the Passion Narratives. We have started to look into the Bible and taken the walk of Jesus as he came from the desert to the city of Jerusalem and began to prepare for the Passover Meal. While we were in class someone asked “why do they celebrate this Passover Meal and when did it start?” We delved into the story and came to the part of scripture that tells of the last plague where the Jewish people slaughtered the lamb and put the blood on the doorposts. Earlier in the year we had made the discovery that we are the sheep that the Good Shepherd leads to the altar. With the innocence of the child the question was brought forward – “If we are the sheep why would that blood be put on the door posts?” Intriguing… After much discussion the children decided at that moment of the Passover “could we have all been saved?” Hmmm – we just sat in amazement… Welcome to atrium 101. Please have your child join us next year . . . or think about being an assistant. The time for registration will be coming sooner than we know!
