The Scribe March, 2016
The Scribe March, 2016 A monthly account of ministry & mission at Christ the King Lutheran Church Thoughts from Pastor Tim Orlowski At the November Semi-Annual Meeting, I stated that one of my priorities for CtK in 2016 was to hire a half-time Director of Youth Ministries. Youth Ministry is a very special kind of ministry, and there is a particularly urgent need for that ministry to be geared up at CtK. It takes a person who youth relate to; someone who takes the time to go to concerts and sporting events; it takes a person who LOVES lock-ins and crazy game nights; it takes a person with a passion for youth and their particular burdens and passions; it takes a person to help them to grow into more of the people that God had created them to be; it takes a person who comes and encourages the youth to come, too. In the end, the youth minister is one who can be with our young people and help them to grow in their faith; seek God out as alive and present in the world; act out of a commitment of their faith; participate in worship and discipleship with God’s people; live out a life of service; and rejoice in God’s hopeful Spirit within them. After conducting a search and interviews, we offered the position to a candidate in early December. Due to family circumstances, he told us that he was unable to begin work until January. Then, in mid-January we received the unfortunate news that he had to decline the position in order to take care of his ailing father who lived in Phoenix. In the meantime, our Director of Faith Formation, Mandy Gardner, has taken on some extra responsibilities in the area of youth ministry. See the schedule for youth coffee and/or lunch outings inside this newsletter. I am extremely grateful for Mandy and her help in this regard, although I know that this detracts from the work that we have expressly hired her to do. So we began a new search for a Director of Youth Ministries in February, this time searching locally but also advertising the position in various national online venues. We are inviting applicants to submit a resume to Pastor Tim by March 14, 2016. If you or someone you know might be interested in applying for this position, please let them know. A job description can be found at our website: www.ctkdurango.org. One of the obstacles, I am discovering, in searching for a half-time position is the cost of living in Durango – especially in regard to housing. If you or someone you know has a room, apartment or small house that is available for a new Youth Director to rent, please notify Pastor Tim. Any help in this regard would be extremely beneficial. I will keep you all posted on the progress of this new search as it unfolds. Please continue to pray that God will direct the right person to aid us in our ministry to, with and for the youth of our community. The Church & Community Calendars, Get Involved-Volunteer Sign-up pages, Bulletins, Scribes, The CtK Directory, and News — all are accessible from the website! It’s updated weekly, so Check it out! www.ctkdurango.org Attendees: Gary Steinbach, Pastor Tim, Chuck Winn, Cortney Conrad, Mae Morley, Tom Duft, Ken Hartlein, John Condie, Julie Williams, Charlie Hakes Gary called the meeting to order at 5:31 pm; a quorum was present. Pastor’s Rpt—There are 11 to attend the Navajo Mission and 7 for the Guatemala Mission; fundraising plans for the mission trips forthcoming soon. The person we offered the Youth Director position to has declined, for family reasons. The position is currently advertised on the national youth minister network online, on the Rocky Mountain Synod youth network, and at Ft. Lewis.* Administrator’s Rpt—Discussed sign upgrades for the Sanctuary, Community Hall, and Office. * Treasurer’s Rpt—Income almost exactly matched the budget; Maturity Team is in the green because the Youth Director position has not yet started, thus no salary output; Administration had additional money spent on snow removal; overall deficit for income vs. expenses is $4,692. * M-Team Rpts— * All M-Team Liaisons are asked to review, update, and make any relevant changes to the M-Team Goals and Action Plans as outlined in the Strategic Plan and bring these back to Council for discussion and finalization. The goal is to present the strides and progress to the congregation at the May Congregational Meeting. Please send your notes and articles that need to be inserted into the Scribe to Linda as Word documents that are attached to your email. Please send by noon on the 15th of the month. She has posted a sign up sheet for any members of the church who are able to come read to the children. If reading to the children is not an activity of interest to you, perhaps you have another suggestion that I am hoping you will consider. You might also consider helping the teachers out by doing some prep work for them at home. They often need items cut out, or something created on the computer—items they will use in their classrooms. Whatever time and ability you have to offer would be greatly appreciated. Simply share your interests and ideas with Julie Williams, or any of the Children's World Board members. We were also impressed with their Twelve Exercises for Seekers and their list of resources for recommended reading." Please join us on Thursdays at 3:00 pm in room W3, the Bridal Room, for what promises to be a stimulating study. Contact: Laura Stransky (749-2270) or Aurora Rose (382-9801) . SAVE THE DATE DURANGO CROP WALK Saturday, April 9th It’s NEVER too early to mark your calendars for the Annual Love Out Loud event. JUNE 11th & 12th — The Annual Love Out Loud event is in the planning stages. So set aside this weekend to celebrate love with our hands and hearts through service in our community. Christ the King Lutheran will once again be partnering with the First United Methodist Church (FUMC) and the Coalition of Caring Communities (CCC) to identify community service projects that benefit schools, parks, local agencies (their facilities and/or their clients), or low-income people with specific needs. Interested in volunteering? The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Durango is sponsoring a CROP Walk on April 9th. Stay tuned for details as to time, place, and fundraising details. This event raises money for worldwide relief through Church World Services, and also provides support to some local agencies. Email [email protected] or call Beth Stelz at 970-903-8354. 6 The Piecemaker Quilters of CtK sew large quilts for the Navajo Evangelical Lutheran Mission at Rock Point, AZ, on a regular basis. Upon learning that some folks there have to sleep outdoors on the ground, the Quilters recently made heavy, large quilts to help out. Prayer Quilts are made as well for the sick and homebound, for newborns, and others in need. The Piecemakers graciously welcome new quilters, or anyone who would like to learn to quilt— someone will happily assist in getting you started. They meet on the 2nd Friday of each month from 9:30 am until 2:00 pm in the CtK Community Hall and usually bring lunch and spend some time discussing quilting plans, chatting, and catching up. You are invited to come learn to quilt or simply come to enjoy fellowship with them whenever you can. For more information, call Judy Danielson at 247-9730 or reach her at the Durango Quilt Company at 247-2582. From our CtK Library—You can find this book in the Biography Section. Katharina Von Bora by: Rudolf & Marilynn Markwald Rudolph and Marilynn Markwald have written a biography of Katharina Von Bora, Martin Luther’s wife. She was a support to Martin Luther, and he valued her opinion. Consequently, Katharina has become a significant figure in church history, especially that of the Reformation. Because little is known of Katharina’s early years, the first couple of chapters of the book are devoted more to the background of the convent life in which she was raised. The succeeding chapters tell of her relationship with Luther. Their relationship is revealed in his letters to her and their conversations, as recorded by guests, and subsequently published as Luther’s table talk. Luther held a traditional view of marriage — man is head of the house. Nonetheless, he recognized his wife’s key role in managing the practical side of their life. She ran several farms and a large household and often found herself tending to frequent long-term guests and even brewing. She was also instrumental in the details of getting Luther’s works published by the printers. Hey Readers! The CtK Book Club meets on the second Thursday of each month at 3:00 pm in the CtK Library. Our book discussion for March 10th is “People of the Book” by Geraldine Brooks. Then in April , on Thursday the 14th, we turn our discussion to a book by Lorraine Hansberry, “Raisin in the Sun.” We invite you to drop in at any time for some lively and enriching literary discussions. We always have a good time and look forward to having new members join us! After Luther’s death, his and Katharina’s home in Wittenberg was overrun several times by Catholic forces. Katharina’s major achievement during this time was keeping her family together and raising her children to adulthood. Sadly, during another flight from the wars of the Reformation, she was killed in a carriage accident . This book is recommended if you are interested in Lutheran and Reformation history. Please call Stella Welcher at 903-9327 or 884-0460 for more info. ~ Lillian Thanks, and Happy Reading! 7 Lent & Easter Season Dates All are welcome!
