C ORNE RS TONE CHRIST THE KING LUTHERAN CHURCH 1505 S. FORD STREET, REDLANDS, CA 92373 (909) 793-5703 www.ctkredlands.org MESSAGE FROM PASTOR SMITH DECEMBER 2013 Dearly beloved of Christ the King, The Lord be with you. God did not spin the wheel of fortune when He sent His Son to earth. When Jesus is born, nothing happens by chance. Not by some roll of the dice was He conceived without a human father. For as Adam had only God as his Father (Luke 4:38), so also the New Adam, who had come to give rise to a new humanity, only had God as His Father. Not by accident was the Lord Christ born in David's hometown, for He is the Son of David, come to reign forever over the kingdom of God. And also is wasn't just "bad luck" that a tyrant king named Herod wanted this baby boy dead. For in Jesus, history repeats itself. More that that – history is repeated and completed in Him. Recall what happened to our spiritual bloodline in ancient Egypt. To save his own political neck, that tyrant king called Pharaoh ordered the murder of every baby Israelite boy. Their infant lungs were engulfed by the waters of the Nile. Ripped from the breast they were fed to the river. All but the son of Amram and Jochebed. He is delivered from the tyrant's hand, this babe named Moses, for by his hand God will deliver His people from Egypt. And so He does, in his own time. Moses is reared by the princess, flees Egypt at age forty when Pharaoh seeks to kill him. Until the age of eighty, he lives the life of a shepherd, till those who sought his life are dead. The Moses returns to the land of captivity – returns as God's agent of deliverance, returns to lead them out of death through the waters of the Red Sea, as he himself was saved from the waters in the days of his infancy. And so it came to pass, in the fullness of time, that God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law, that He might redeem you who were enslaved in an Egypt far worse than the Egypt of old. For as hardhearted as was Pharaoh, he is nothing compared to the tyrant of hell under whose rule you were born. As cruel as was the slavery of our patriarchs and matriarchs in Egypt, it is no match for the cruel shackles of transgression and shame, guilt and death that tightly chain our souls. We are sinners. From this Egypt of sin ruled by the Satanic Pharaoh, a new and better Moses was sent to set you free. But as it was for the son of Amram and Jochebed, so it was for the Son of Mary. To save his own political neck, King Herod wants Him dead. So he sends soldiers to Bethlehem, to turn their streets into another Nile, another infant graveyard. But One is delivered from this tyrant's hand, for by His hand God will deliver you. To Egypt Jesus is carried by His Mother and her husband, there biding his time, as did Moses of old, until those who sought His live were dead. Then He returns – returns as God's ultimate agent of deliverance, returns to lead you out of death through the waters of the baptismal font, a Red Sea made crimson with blood which was shed on the Friday we call Good. For you this new and better Moses was born. For you He fled from the sword of Herod. For you He was called out of Egypt. For you He was called to the cross. For you He suffered the whips, the thorns, the spikes, the bleeding and the dying. For you He was called back to life. For you He held in His hands the shackles of sin and death that once bound you, shattered by His grace. You He carries out of Egypt, across the font of the Red Sea, and to the Promised Land. You He feeds with manna from on high, gives you the crimson drink that flows from the rock of His pierced flesh. History is not only repeated and completed in Him; it is done with your salvation in view. That is what matters to God. That is what He wants most. He wants you. And you He has. Thanks be to God. Peace be with you, Pastor Smith Horn Family Newsletter Serving the Lord in Papua New Guinea Thanksgiving, 2013 Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:4-7 ESV) Thanksgiving holiday plans… If one if the best things in this life is old friends in familiar places, then perhaps one of the next best things might be new friends in unfamiliar places. When you settle in a place so far from home that all which you have known has been left behind, and there in that far place you find friends who come from your country, speak your language and share your story, then new bonds grow quickly and deeply. Here in the Highlands of PNG we have met wonderful friends who are part of the LC-MS mission team. They have welcomed us, helped us learn Pidgin, and settle in to life in PNG. We are thankful for Julie and Anton and Donna and Harry. We also have met another missionary family who has come to PNG through the Summer Institute of Linguistics to translate the Old Testament into Enga – the local language. In a short time Adam and Martha Boyd and their children have become friends. All of us will gather together the Sunday before Thanksgiving at our home for a feast and a time to worship in English. The bounty will come from the gardens and markets of PNG. It may not look much like a traditional Thanksgiving meal, though we might be able to get some turkey. But we will gather in Thanksgiving to God who has kept us safe through this year and we will pray for His ongoing help, so that the Gospel might be proclaimed and the Church in PNG grow in Christ, and new Lutheran pastors be trained to preach Christ crucified. Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ Jesus, This Thanksgiving we find ourselves on the other side of the world from our home, but in many ways we understand this day more than ever. This year we have been reminded over and over again that thankfulness is not just for a day or a season – it is appropriate in every situation where God’s blessings come to us through Jesus Christ – in other words, always. Truly God’s gifts to us all in Christ Jesus have filled our lives with blessings all of our days and years. From His gift of the new birth in Holy Baptism, to daily encouragement in His Word, to partaking of the body and blood of Christ in the Sacrament, to the help God gives in answer to prayer – God has filled our lives to overflowing with His blessings. God give us all forgiveness for the times we have not been thankful, and strengthen our faith, Amen. This year has brought a whirlwind of changes for our family. Yet through it all God has helped us by His grace. Perhaps it is because everything here is so new, that we appreciate so much that God has kept us safe, has landed us in a healthy place to learn and serve, and has blessed us with so many people who are helping us in the love of Christ. Since you are reading this it is likely that you are one of the people who have helped us with encouragement, prayers, help and support. As we thank God for all His blessings in Christ, we also thank God for you and ask Him to bless you in every way. True Story… In October I preached my first sermon in Pidgin at the church which meets on the seminary campus. I was trying to make a point that the natural language of a Christian is not English or Enga, but rather – thankfulness to God. I used the illustration of a man In Christ, Jeffrey and Lora Horn Chris and Maggie (Continued on page 3) CTK Cornerstone 2 December 2013 (Continued from page 2) who went walking in the forest one morning. He looked up to the trees and saw little birds sitting on the branches who were about to sing. I said, “What if those birds opened their mouths and instead of singing, they barked like a dog – would that be right?” (Of course not, barking is not their right language. So too, when Christians are filled with anger, resentment and complaining, this is not their right language. We have been forgiven in Christ Jesus, cleansed by His blood and blessed in countless ways. Our language should be thankfulness for gifts given and prayers for help needed!) But the people were distracted from the point of the illustration, because to drive the point home I barked like the little birds would have barked. A dog who had been sleeping in the back of the church got up and started barking back in response. The laughter went on for a while, and I learned a lesson about preaching in a place where dogs wander into church at will. J Things for Which We are Thankful… For God the Father who provides for our needs For Christ our Savior, who forgives all of our sins For the Holy Spirit who creates and strengthens our faith, and building us up for the work at hand. For our former regional director, John Mehl. John helped recruit us into mission work and he helped us get a good start here. We pray God will bless him as he begins a new area of work. For our new regional director Darin Storkson. PNG is now part of the South Asia Oceania region. Darin has a lot of energy and ideas. We are excited to work with him and the SAO team. For the many men and women who have served as missionaries in PNG in the past. Many of them have graciously shared their time and insights with us to help us get ready for living and serving here. They helped us to not have to learn things the hard way. Their ongoing prayers and encouragement help us very much. For Jacob Luke, who loaned a vehicle to us as we got settled in to work here in PNG. For the support of the LC-MS and LCEF to purchase a vehicle that can handle the roads here. For the “little things” which aren’t so little over here. For hot tea, dark chocolate, lip balm, warm showers, running water, fly swatters, hot water bottles, fresh vegetables, music CD’s and so much more… And for our friends and loved ones in the States who send care packages to us filled with “little things.” Prayer Requests… For good health and safety. For all of the people who have supported us as we start mission work in PNG. Thank you for your prayers, your encouragement and your gifts. Thank you for partnering with us in this work. For our families who have been very supportive of us as we start this work. For the gift of holy marriage, for the blessing of children, and for family peace and teamwork. For the people in PNG who have welcomed us so lovingly. For our partners in the Good News Lutheran Church, who work with us in serving Christ. For our mission team in PNG, all of whom have helped us learn about life and work in PNG. For ongoing fluency in Pidgin. For help for Jeff as he begins to study the Enga language. For Rev. Peter Haugen and his wife Beth and their family as they raise support to come and work in PNG. That we would have wisdom to understand the needs and challenges that face the church here, and that know the right time to speak and the right time to be quiet and listen. That the political problems in the Good News Lutheran Church would be resolved in a God pleasing way and that there would be unity around true doctrine, and that all would work together to lovingly proclaim the Gospel. For the men and women at the International Center in St. Louis who have worked hard to help us get here. They don’t get much attention, but they are very dedicated to supporting missionaries, and we are grateful. What a mystery! The Lord God Almighty is three in one – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit – the glory equal, the majesty coeternal. There is extraordinary unity that exists between the persons of the Holy Trinity. This unity is a defining reality that helps us understand God’s action toward us. What is that action? God saves sinners! When time became fully pregnant the Son of God leaped off His royal throne and took up residence in the womb of the Virgin. This was a decisive movement of Most Holy God toward sinful man. All three persons of the Holy Trinity were involved in this giving movement. It is out of unfathomable love that the Father gives His Son to a world that stands in need of a Savior. It is the Son Himself who comes not to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many. It is the Holy Spirit who “overshadows” a lowly handmaiden of the Most High and “broods” over her womb as He had “brooded” over the face of the waters on the first day of Creation. The Holy Trinity acts in unity. All three persons are intricately involved in the accomplishment of our salvation. This is beautifully portrayed in the conception and birth of Jesus, Son of Mary. There is a magnificent depth of field as we consider the import of Advent in the radiant light of the Holy Trinity. New vantage points will be established from which we gain a heavenly view of the Incarnation (God being made man). Each unique person of the Trinity will be considered and His unique contribution highlighted so that the divine depth of field regarding Christmas might enlarge our faith.
