HSM programme - Christ the King CVA
From the Director
Ladies and Gentlemen, girls and boys, thank you for
coming to support this year‟s school production: „High
School Musical‟. It is a show which requires little introduction or explanation, so I‟ll be brief. In January 2006
„High School Musical‟ was broadcast on the Disney Channel and became
an overnight success. It has been seen by over 225 million viewers worldwide. The story is a modern adaptation of „Romeo and Juliet‟. Troy and
Gabriella are in rival „cliques‟ in school, and cause uproar by auditioning
for their school production together. Troy and Gabriella ultimately resist
peer pressure and inspire others to follow their dreams and not „stick to the
status quo‟.
Students at CTK have asked me about doing this production for some
years, but the performance rights have only recently become available.
It was time to put on a more modern piece, and with the rights secured it
was an easy decision.
I could fill several pages thanking the staff and students who have made
this production possible. Suffice it to say that many of my colleagues
have worked in various capacities, and I am very grateful to them all.
To the cast, I would like to thank them for their hard work, their time and
commitment to making this show the spectacle you see tonight. We have
so many talented young people in our school and it has been a pleasure
for me to work with them, some for the first time, to create a piece of theatre of which we can all be proud.
It‟s always somebody‟s last show, and Kieran Hayes who plays the role of
Coach Bolton, has been in more productions than most. I first worked with
Kieran in 2009 when he played „Noah Claypole‟ in „Oliver‟ and he has
been in every production since. His „Orin the dentist‟ in „Little Shop of Horrors‟ and his half of the double dame (with Mr Bussey) in Cinderella are my
personal highlights. He‟s a natural performer, very easy to work with and
despite his singing (!), I would like to thank him for his contribution to Drama and Productions at CTK, and wish him well in the future.
It just remains for me to transport you to East High. The students are returning from their summer vacation and have a rather busy week ahead…
Enjoy!
James Akers
(Troy Bolton)
Inspired by the stellar careers of Ronald
Reagan and Arnold Schwarzenegger, James
aims to combine dramatic success with political dominance. Starting with chair of school
council aiming for world president, James also
enjoys playing the drums and long walks on
the beach. Having secured the role of Troy,
and a place on stage with CTK's Got Talent
Star Genine, James is just glad that this year,
he does not have to wear a moustache.
Luke O’Hara
(Chad Danforth)
Before you ask, it is his own hair and he always
looks like this. Luke , winner of CTK‟s got talent
2012 shows his versatility playing a jock . Luke
can do stand up comedy, sit down comedy
and he can sing Irish protest songs. He does
not play basketball. He prefers a nice gentle
game of rounders with the girls.
What’s it all about?
If like me, you are one of the few people who have never heard of, never
mind seen High School Musical, then this glossary of terms is for you. As usual, the plot is largely irrelevant, but is basically this:
Boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy finds girl and everyone is happy.
However, it is the in-between-bits which account for why you bought a
ticket in the first place. Well, that and the fact that your daughter/son/
friend/someone you fancy is in the show. Anyway, just to help you on your
way, here is a glossary:
Jock: The term jock, when used primarily in the United States, refers to the
classic stereotype of a male athlete. It is generally attributed mostly to
high school and college athletics participants who form a distinct youth
subculture.
Brainiac: brainy person, the sort who appears on University Challenge,
Mastermind and Deal or no Deal
Thespian: someone who fancies him or herself as a bit of an actor and
says, “Dahling!” rather a lot. A sort of Jacob Seelochan really
Cheerleading: a physical activity, based on organized routines which contain the components of tumbling, dance, jumps, cheers and stunting to
cheer on the East High Meerkats. You will see none of this tonight,
Band: these are the people who play instruments so that other people can
sing in the show
Are you sitting comfortably?
In order to get you in the mood for this extravaganza, do buy a specially
themed Party Bag (price £1) so you can really be a part of High School
Musical. During the interval we will be selling popcorn for £1 a cone and
drinks are free. Just don‟t drop your litter. Or else.
B. Kuczyńska
Genine Labis
(Gabriella Montez)
Star of Heatwave, winner of CTK‟s got talent
and now a principal in HSM.
Little girl, huge voice. Genine also plays flute
and piano and is a brainiac in real life as well
as in HSM. Genine enjoys programmes like
Eggheads and Mastermind as well as Dora
the Explorer.
Ellie Norton
(Taylor McKassie)
Ellie‟s credits include many appearances in
CTK‟s got talent, and a principal role in
“Mother Goose”. Her ambition is to play one of
the ugly sisters in “Cinderella” but Mr. Akers always provides stiff competition when it comes
to auditions. Ellie‟s talents extend to all manner
of dance, but her favourite role has been that
of Widow Simone in the clog dance from
“La fille mal gardée.”
Bethany Davies
(Martha Cox)
Bethany has been a long standing member of
Heatwave (year 7 photo above) so is no
stranger to the stage. She has also taken part
in CTK‟s got talent, numerous Soul Nights, was
in “Little Shop of Horrors” and is delighted to be
in HSM. Bethany‟s hobbies include cake decorating and collecting milk bottle tops for Blue
Peter.
Gabby Tempest
(Sharpay Evans)
Gabby is a regular to the stage at CTK as
both actor and dancer. Most recently she
played the Goose in Mother Goose, impressing us all with her extraordinary ability to lay
golden eggs and quack in time to music. In
her spare time Gabby enjoys smiling, skiing
and embroidery. Her dream is to become a
poultry farmer. Quack. (Wrong show Gabby.)
Jacob Seelochan
(Ryan Evans)
After taking part in several shows at CTK now, Jacob decided to keep his tradition up by becoming yet another cheesy American character -this
time „Ryan Evans‟, the lovably camp brother of
Sharpay. Not only has he been spending the
past few rehearsals pushing his voice to the highest of pitches, Ryan Evans comes with some very
flamboyant dance numbers and a few jazz
hands to match.
Joe Smith
(Zeke Baylor)
Man of mystery, a hidden talent, discovered only when a member of the cast became indisposed. If Joe pulls it off, he will
be a hero. If he doesn‟t, he will still be a
hero for standing in 24 hours before the
opening night. GoJoe!
Molly Oakden
(Kelsi Neilson)
This is Molly‟s first big role in a school show.
Molly is part of the Drama Academy and is
really looking forward to playing Kelsi. In her
spare time Molly likes swimming because it
is good preparation for when she eventually turns into a mermaid and has to escape
from Ursula the Sea witch. She also practises singing underwater, but that will be of no
use to her tonight.
Kieran Hayes
(Coach Bolton)
This is Kieran‟s swansong. Battling with
incredible shyness and reticence, he
has come out of retirement (again) to
give it one more go. Star of many a
panto and School Show, Kieran has always given sensational performances.
Tonight may be an exception though.
Charlie-Dawn Sadler
(Ms. Darbus)
It has been rumoured that CharlieDawn based her interpretation of Ms.
Darbus on one of her teachers. It is up
to you to choose between Mr. Short
and Mr. Edkins. This is Charlie‟s first principal role other than playing Charlie in
Charlie‟s Angels.
Steve Akers
(Jack Scott)
Here he is, back again, can‟t keep away,
muscling in, doing shows. Following his
success as Mother Goose, he auditioned
as a cheerleader in HSM and didn‟t cast
himself. He is now waiting for the auditions
for Cinderella so that he can get back into a frock. Don‟t give up the day job.
