Lee (Lemon) Barkley, Carolyn (Kollars) Leader, Jerry Melick and Terry Hacecky gathered in April to plan the event over coffee and pumpkin bars. “How about we get taverns from Tastee Treat for the meal on Friday,” said Hacecky. This motion carried unanimously, which took care of the planning. The remainder of the evening was devoted to remembering, sharing stories and laughing – lots and lots of laughing. Hacecky and several other students attended first through third grade at the Model School, as the teacher training program at Mount Marty College was known. They transferred to SHS in fourth grade, creating a class of 43. “We were actually one of the smaller classes,” said Barkley. “Most of the others had around 50.” In later years class sizes at SHS were capped at half that many students, and the rooms in the old building were plenty full with that many desks. “Nobody thought anything of [having 50 desks shoe horned into a classroom],” said Kollars. “That’s just the way it was. Teaching and maintaining discipline for that many was another proposition entirely, but the Benedictine sisters from Sacred Heart Convent were up to the task. “Some of those nuns would have been great mothers. They were as nice and loving as you could ever find. Others would have made great prison wardens,” said Melick with a laugh. Mark Renner began first grade with the class in the fall of 1955, but he was with them only one year. He drowned in Lewis and Clark Lake, which was created by the closure of Gavins Point Dam that same year, in the summer between first and second grade. His parents, Tony and Ann Renner, donated a teacher’s desk to Sacred Heart School in his honor, and it is still in use today. Harold and Francis Tacke lived outside of Yankton, and every morning they would load their children in a van and bring them to SHS. Mike Tacke, who was two years with the Class of 64, broke his leg at one point and it didn’t heal properly. For months they brought him to school on a gurney, then carried him up the steps so he could attend class. There was no tuition charged at SHS in those days. If your family was part of Sacred Heart Parish you could attend for free; the parents’ only cost was for textbooks. Kollars brought along the receipt for her book bill in fourth grade: $12.10 total, with charges ranging from 53 cents for a reading workbook to $1.80 for a geography Girls and women book. were required to “That was tough have some sort for our families of covering on to pay back then,” their heads while she said. at Mass in those For art class, the days. Rubber bands figure prominently in Hacecky’s grade school memories: shooting bobby pins at the ceiling and erasers at his friend Tom Brady, and building a whoopee cushion-type device from a rubber band and a washer. “I still have [the rubber bands] in my trumpet case,” he said with a laugh. Be warned, then, Class of 64: bring your own rubber bands or else! “I heard about it on the playground, and I thought it was joke,” said Barkley. “I mean, who ever heard of the president getting shot?” “Fred Binder went home for lunch and came back and told us,” said Melick. “It was one of the darkest days I remember, and it was gloomy for a long time after.” Another shared experience for the boys who left grade school in 1964 was what awaited them after graduating from high school: the draft, and the the military and at least one did go to Southeast Asia, but none died there. This past spring these two fine people initiated the first ever charitable unitrust with the Yankton Catholic Community Foundation (YCCFO). In partnership with the Catholic Foundation for Eastern South Dakota(CFESD), the YCCFO entered into a charitable trust agreement with the Gebharts and it was a win-win situation for all! How does an agreement like this benefit both the Gebharts and the Church? Most importantly it allows generous people like the Gebharts to help out many people through the sale of an asset, in this case, The Gebhart family farm. In Johns words, “we didn’t know so many people could be helped with the sale of our farm.” Indeed many people benefit from a trust of this kind. First, St. Benedict Church, as the Gebhart’s adopted parish in Yankton will see a monetary benefit. Also, other causes like R.E.A.C.H (Religious Education for all Children) in the Diocese will see a monetary benefit. Along with helping all these people, the Gebharts themselves receive a benefit. While John is already retired from his first career and from farming, both he and Pat still work, so the benefit of extra John & Patricia Gebhart income for the rest of their lives from the Trust is a big benefit to them. Also, since they are giving the remainder of the trust to the Church when they pass away, they also receive a large tax benefit. When the sale of an appreciated asset, like land or stock, takes place the seller has to pay a large amount of capital gains tax. However, when a charitable unitrust is initiated by the seller before the sale of the asset, the seller receives a large tax deduction, an income and doesn’t pay any capital gains tax. While there are great benefits on all sides of the equation, the most important thing is the grace that is spread around to so many from the openness of heart of a couple of people like the Gebharts who take the time to look at the options available and choose the one that helps more than just themselves. Thank you John and Pat, you are an example to us all. For more information on the benefits of a chairtable unitrust please call 605-665-4585 or ©650-660-5491 and ask for Tim. Steve & Linda Frick God bless you for your generosity! Summer 2014 • 9 From the Desk of Tim McCaffrey, Director awesome event. What a blessing for our youth; and for me, who will be helping chaperone this year’s trip. Change is a fact of life. As much as we become comfortable with the familiar, rest assured, change will come along and unseat us from our chair of familiarity. However, amidst the changes we go through, God is always with us, blessing our lives and those of our loved ones, friends and neighbors. This Spring also saw us begin Phase II of the One Heart, One Mind, One Spirit In Christ Capital Campaign. People have been very generous and also very dedicated to paying off the remaining debt from the building project completed in 2010. One of the biggest differences from Phase I to Phase II is the entire administration and management of the campaign will be carried out by the Foundation Office instead of hiring outside council. This will mean a significant savings to the community and a greater ability to involve as many people as possible in our community over the next few years. Development Office Staff The Yankton Catholic Community will say goodbye to some very memorable people this summer. Fr. John Rutten, who has served as the Sacred Heart Parish Associate We will always have new challenges and changes to adjust for the past two years, has to, but no matter what life throws at us God’s Blessings been appointed Pastor of St. Abound. [email protected] will be taking a position as [email protected] principal of Holy Spirit Elementary School. Both of these fine men will be missed in our community but will take a little piece of Yankton with them when they go. It is never easy to say goodbye to people who are well loved and have positively impacted our community. Yet, amidst these challenging changes there have been many positive changes in our community this last six months. The Yankton Catholic Community Foundation has seen steady growth both in terms of assets and in financial assistance to our catholic community. The Foundation had its first ever Uni-trust completed this past March that will benefit several entities within the Yankton Catholic Michelle Flannery Community. The Foundation also raised DevelopmentAssistant$10,000 to help sponsor the annual 605-665-4585 trip to Stuebenville, (office) Ohio for the [email protected] Catholic Youth conferences. While this money will not all be used this year, the organizers of the trip will be able to carry the funds over for future years. This year, the Yankton Catholic Community organizers o f this event will be taking a second bus of kids.
