I have had some great times here at Sacred Heart. You are such a wonderful parish. I will leave with so many pleasant memories. I am sure your new Pastor Fr. Al will be happy to be with you. Over the years I have been encouraged by how parishioners have stepped forward to volunteer for various programs. So many of you have really put your faith into action as you reach out to serve, love, and forgive as Jesus has taught us. Speaking of forgiveness, I know that a leader can never make everyone happy, so I ask for forgiveness from anyone whom I might have hurt or disappointed. It is so easy to think the pastor is infallibly perfect and forget that I am a human who, like you, can make mistakes. One of my fondest memories is the fruitful times I have spent in confession with so many of you! Your eagerness to be reconciled to our Lord Jesus has always gratified and humbled me. In so many of you I could see the movement of the Holy Spirit leading you to a deeper relationship with our Lord Jesus. May God continue to be praised as you deepen your relationship with Jesus and His Church. I look forward to hearing good things about Sacred Heart parish in the future! I will keep you in my prayers and ask that you keep me in your prayers also! May our Lord bless you now and forever! Fr. John TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — The Lord tells Elijah to anoint Elisha as prophet to succeed him (1 Kings 19:16b, 19-21). Psalm — You are my inheritance, O Lord (Psalm 16). Second Reading — Use your freedom in Christ to serve one another through love (Galatians 5:1, 1318). Gospel — While journeying to Jerusalem, Jesus speaks of the costs of discipleship (Luke 9:51-62). Reflections by Fr. Carlos Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, In the Catholic spiritual tradition we have a little book called "imitation of Christ". This booklet has been considered the second most read book in the Catholic world after the Bible. In Chapter 23 we are given 4 tips for a profound true peace in the Lord. I will gladly share them. I have relied upon a modern translation of Peter Dyckhoff. 1. Look in all to fulfill the will of Lord. 2. Do not accumulate nothing superfluous. The more you simplify your life it will be better. 3. Do not get into business or affairs of others. 4. Direct yourself to God with a simple prayer of devotion. WEST AFRICA COMMUNITY MISSIONS Come be a part of our TEAM! Planning and preparing for our fall (October 2016) medical mission trip has begun. West Africa Community Missions (WACM) with Sacred Heart Parish will be conducting a 10 day medical mission trip to Port Antonio Jamaica. This is a follow up trip to our October 2015 medical mission in Port Antonio that was done through the generous support of Sacred Heart Parish. The children and families of Port Antonio are desperate for our medical care and help. Our first meeting will be at the home of Dr. Kevin and Valerie White, 10660 Candytuft St. in Ventura on June 30th, 7 - 8 PM. Please RSVP at: [email protected], or on Facebook at www.facebook.com/africamedicalmissions. All those who would like to come on the medical mission trip, all those who would like to help support behind the scenes, and all those who are just dreaming of coming now or in the future are welcome to our first meeting. Doctors, Dentist, Nurses, and health Care workers are all needed, but we also need a significant number of students and nonmedical volunteers to make our trips work. June 26, 2016 Page 3 Youth Ministry News SAFEGUARD THE CHILDREN A parishioner recently asked me how our core team became so large over the past couple of years. As I took a moment to think about it, there was one thing that stuck out more than most. I don’t treat our teens like they are children, instead, I treat them like adults. I hold them responsible for their own actions, I trust them, I don’t talk down them, I treat them as a peer not anything less. Some people may not agree with this, but I have found time and time again that I get more respect from teens this way. Because of this, they are more open during the program, and therefore want to become part of our team when they are done because they feel wanted. Our program is not about who is better, or who has a higher status, we are all Christians trying to get through this thing called life. We are on the same journey together, we want someone to help us on this journey, we want to know that we are never alone. This is why we have such a huge core team of 37 strong and still growing! We are a family of sinners, a family of believers, a family of dorks, we are family period. To grow as a church we need to be a family working together, not better or worse than one another, but as equals. We may be in different places in our faith journey but that doesn’t make us different. I treat teens as equals, and that’s why they stick around, because they feel welcomed. Don’t forget: -Registrations due August 31st (anytime after will have a $25 late fee attached) -Registrations can be found in the rectory or on the parish website under faith formation. A little planning and effort can help minimize your family’s risk. You can start by installing, testing, and maintaining smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. WORDS OF WISDOM… “I do not pray for a lighter load, but for a stronger back.” ~Phillips Brooks June 26, 2013 Page 5 MISA DEL MEDIODÍA, 12 P.M. 2. No acumules nada superfluo. Entre más simplifiques tu vida será mejor. 3. No te metas en negocios, o asuntos, ajenos. 4.
