By thus fulfilling these two great commandments, we hope to become models of faith and imitators of the Lord (2) who gave himself totally for our sakes. For Reflection: How has your understanding of what it means to be a Christian changed as you have matured? Campaign Update The success of any capital campaign is dependent on the fulfillment of pledged gifts. But a pledge doesn’t replace the church windows or pay down the debt at the bank or put cash into savings for a rainy day fund. Only our payments on our pledges can do that. So, as best you can, please don’t forget about the promise you made. Try to keep your payments as steady and regular as possible. The more consistent your payments are, the better we can plan for the projects for which that money was intended. On our $800,000 goal, we raised pledges and gifts of $1,000,000! Three years into the five year pledge period, we’ve made payments of $700,000! Thank you so much for honoring your pledges so faithfully!! Right now our parish rebate is 20% of the funds collected so we’re just $100,000 short of the point at which our rebate flips from 20% to 80%!! 21 Club Drawing # 7 October 10, 2014 Prize Ticket# Winner Seller $200 889 Sue Murawkski Ann Lindblade $100 612 Kathleen Bowen S. Christian Formation and Evangelization DO YOU KNOW that in the early Church only adults were baptized? At a fairly early date, baptism became associated with the annual Easter Vigil. Surviving records from these days tell us that in many places adults were tested for up to three years while they were instructed and supported in their withdrawal from pagan practices and loyalties and taught to live a new way. Only then were they admitted to candidacy for baptism. Their final intense preparation came during Lent when they received intense instruction submitted to exorcisms and other special rituals and were baptized during the night of the Easter Vigil. This period of preparation leading to initiation at the Easter Vigil was the beginnings of the catechumenate. Sacred Heart School Religious Education Fellow Parishioners! Do you ever have those mornings where you greet the day bursting with energy, really looking forward to all that God has in store for you with joy? You feel awake, alive, on fire, exited. Or, does all of the noise and chaos of our world get in the way of that sometimes? I don’t know that any of us hits that joy and excitement 100% of the time, but I have to tell you, our children at school burst with that energy each morning. When I stand outside to greet them, I am stunned, I am grateful, I am blessed each day. Our students arrive wide awake, excited to see me, with incredible enthusiasm and positivity about the day ahead. It may be that not each child feels that way every morning, but as group, our students’ expressive joy has been a sure and certain reality each day. They may not word it this way, but I can see in them the deep and certain knowledge that the day ahead is a gift, a genuine grace from God, and never something to be taken for granted. I also saw our students’ joy in a profound way when Deacon Carlos visited some middle school classes on Monday to pray with them. The scripture reading that morning (which we pray with in morning announcements) was of the Good Samaritan. The message perfectly matched something we all try to remind our children of daily: the path to a meaningful, purposeful, joyous life is to live with love. When Deacon Carlos asked our students what this was about, many of them, in a variety of classes, responded much the same way: we are called to love everyone, even if we don’t like them. This is a message we try to share in our morning announcements, in class prayers, in a great variety of ways, and our students listen. This week, may we all listen. Let’s listen to God’s voice reminding us to greet our days with exuberant joy, to really cherish the great gifts He has ready to share with us. May God so bless us, Zachary S.
