ENGAGEMENT Parents are a child’s first and most important teachers. Whether children are in preschool, elementary, middle or high school, parent/family involvement plays a crucial role in students’ academic success. Through the Office of Parent Engagement, within the Student Support Initiatives Department, the District works to strengthen the home-family-school connection and create new ways to educate parents on how they can help their children achieve. Family and Community Involvement Award The Florida Department of Education’s Family and Community Involvement Award, which is sponsored by the Florida PTA and supported through business partnerships, recognizes schools that develop successful programs to promote parent, family and community involvement. Nominee submissions reflect innovative practices for recruitment, training, and/or recognition of parents and families at the school level. These efforts may focus on removing barriers, communicating, volunteering, training, mentoring, decision-making and collaborating with the community. The school-level nominee selected as the District winner is eligible to compete for state recognition. Online Resources for Parent Engagement The District’s website, browardschools.com, includes a variety of resources for parents and families. Parents can access information and resources to help them stay informed about their child’s academic progress, educational digital learning resources, details on how to get involved in their child’s school, and much more. This “one-stop shop” has everything a parent needs to get involved and stay involved in their child’s education. Take a look! Visit browardschools.com, and click the “Parents” web page. Parents’ Guide to Broward Schools The Parents’ Guide to Broward Schools is a handy booklet that serves as a parent’s roadmap to the District. This guide contains a comprehensive listing of topics of interest for parents, along with contact information for each topic. Detailed information ranges from health immunization requirements to accommodations for military dependent students. Available in four languages (English, Spanish, Haitian Creole and Portuguese), the guide is one more method Broward County Public Schools has developed to foster a strong relationship between parents and schools in an ongoing effort to increase student achievement. For more information about Parent Engagement programs, contact: Wanda Robinson, Specialist, Parent Engagement, Student Support Initiatives at 754-321-1599. 7 Family and Community Engagement FAMILY AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT NOMINEES BROWARD COUNTY COUNCIL PTA CLOTHING BANK AND FAMILY SUPPORT PROGRAM COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT FOR STUDENT SUCCESS Boyd H. Anderson High School APOLLO MIDDLE SCHOOL AND LAUDERDALE MANORS EARLY LEARNING AND FAMILY RESOURCE CENTER In an effort to address the need for clothing, especially school uniforms, the Broward County Council PTA (BCCPTA) manages two clothing banks to serve some of the District’s neediest families. In addition to providing clothing, the BCCPTA works to alleviate hunger and hosts charitable events that encourage parental engagement and facilitate community awareness. MULTICULTURAL FESTIVAL Gator Run Elementary School YEARBOOK CONTEST AND PROGRAM Hollywood Hills Elementary School This year, BCCPTA held events at Atlantic Technical High, Sheridan Technical High and McFatter Technical High to celebrate the holidays and provide food and groceries for Thanksgiving dinners. The organization’s members also provided hundreds of families with gifts and cards to ensure that the children and their parents would be able to share in the season of giving. Thanks to the efforts of the BCCPTA, outreach and services have expanded from 200 families last year to more than 900 this school year. The goal of the BCCPTA in these family support efforts is to not only give, but also provide families with the information and tools to address and/or resolve the problems that create the need for emergency services. This work is accomplished by a dedicated crew of volunteers who work closely with BCCPTA members and collaborate with guidance counselors, social workers, district administrators, and SAC committees to assess need and deliver services. The program is supported by donations, partnerships and more than 4,000 hours of volunteer time. VOLUNTEER RECRUITMENT CAMPAIGN Hollywood Park Elementary school KIWANIS CLUB DIVISION 23 MLK DAY OF SERVICE Larkdale Elementary School COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER SUPPORT Lyons Creek Middle School Clay Tile Night Sunrise Middle School 8 From the many outstanding mentor nominations received from schools, outstanding mentors and mentoring programs were selected in the categories of Outstanding Mentor - Elementary Level, Outstanding Mentor - Secondary Level and Outstanding Mentor Program. In selecting the Mentors of the Year, the evaluation committee considered such factors as: program planning; program implementation; the length of service; scope and regularity of involvement; uniqueness of approach; impact on students’ behaviors and attitudes; attendance and academic success; and the overall support of the school. Youth Mentors are volunteers working one-on-one or in small groups with students. The common goal of all mentors is to encourage students to stay in school and make healthy lifestyle choices. Mentoring is growing, thanks to the commitment and support of the organizations, local businesses, corporations and service clubs throughout Broward County. The following organizations have become partners with the Youth Mentoring Programs Department to bring educational and emotional support to students: America Reads/America Counts’ students from Nova Southeastern University and Broward College assist elementary students in math and reading. Mental Health Association of Broward County promotes mental health through prevention programs, education and direct service. Through the “Listen to Children” mentoring program, students receive mentors who help them improve self-esteem, communication and problem solving skills. Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Broward matches children from single parent homes on a oneto-one basis with professionally trained and supervised adults. Take Stock in Children (TSIC) provides college or post-secondary tuition scholarships and mentoring based on a performance contract children sign with their parents. Made up of local partnerships with the school system, business leaders and sponsors, TSIC students pledge to stay off drugs, keep out of trouble, stay in school and make good grades. DeLetis Scholars helps all the brothers and sisters in low-income, at-risk families to achieve academic and personal success, and provides after high school tuition scholarships and mentoring. Girl Scouts of Broward assists girls in making positive choices regarding their self-esteem, relationships, abstinence and conflict resolution through a curriculum that promotes values including honesty, responsibility and caring for self and others. Women of Tomorrow is a group mentoring/ scholarship program, consisting of a distinguished group of professional women who mentor selected at-risk young women. 9 OUTSTANDING MENTOR OF THE YEAR ELEMENTARY LEVEL OUTSTANDING MENTOR OF THE YEAR SECONDARY LEVEL LARRY ROTHMAN RICHARD DOWNER GATOR RUN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL MCARTHUR HIGH SCHOOL Larry Rothman is an incredible mentor who has given unselfishly to the mentoring program at Gator Run Elementary. He has mentored up to four students at a time for the past five years making an amazing difference in the lives of the children he serves. He has filled a great need for male role models and has been especially helpful with fifth grade boys at the school. Richard Downer was selected as the Outstanding Mentor of the Year at McArthur High because of his strong ability to connect with and mentor students. Mr. Downer gives of his time and resources to work with students and help them reach their maximum potential. His tireless commitment to come each week and talk with students while building positive relationships fills the gap between school and home success. Mr. Rothman has such a love for mentoring that he made it his mission to bring in more mentors and has recruited five additional committed individuals to join the Gator Run Elementary mentoring program this year alone. Mr. Downer’s achievement in motivating and inspiring students to succeed is evident by his ability to get students to remain in school and complete their graduation requirements. His impact on students at McArthur High will be felt for years to come. Mr. Rothman has been extremely instrumental in helping other mentors to be successful and thereby strengthening the school’s ability to meet the needs of students. 10 OUTSTANDING MENTORING PROGRAM OF THE YEAR HOLLYWOOD POLICE DEPARTMENT MENTORING PROGRAM HOLLYWOOD PARK ELEMENTARY Hollywood Park Elementary is very fortunate to be able to partner with the Hollywood Police Department, which provides mentors for at-risk students. During their weekly visits, Officers Lahara, Lumpkins, Hightower, Alexander, Williams and Spagensky provide positive guidance, demonstrate their genuine concern for the students, and assist the mentees in improving academically, behaviorally and socially. Thanks to their commitment and influence, schoolwide referrals have decreased significantly. The officers discuss the importance of planning for the future, setting short and long term goals, and completing tasks. In addition, the mentors go above and beyond to bond with their mentees by participating in activities and exposing them to outings such as movies, birthday parties, Parrot Jungle Island and picnics. Hollywood Park Elementary is grateful to Police Chief Tomas Sanchez for his vision of working collaboratively with schools, and the school District to provide positive role models for our youth. 11 OUTSTANDING MENTOR OF THE YEAR NOMINEES OUTSTANDING MENTOR OF THE YEAR – ELEMENTARY LEVEL Coral Springs Elementary School Cheryl Moyle Flamingo Elementary School Steven Blum Lakeside Elementary School Paola Lubo Maplewood Elementary School Krista Ali Margate Elementary School Phil Gough Mirror Lake Elementary School Fiora Costanza Nova Blanche Forman Elementary School Ann Webb Parkside Elementary School Clifford Leitch OUTSTANDING MENTOR OF THE YEAR – SECONDARY LEVEL Coral Springs High School Kar Ho McArthur High School Richard Downer Nova High School Nathaniel Spencer Plantation High School Shaelin Robinson Plantation High School Lucia Ungaro South Broward High School Donna Greene Whispering Pines Center Luisa Escudero OUTSTANDING MENTOR PROGRAM OF THE YEAR Apollo Middle School Rites of Passage After School Program Deerfield Beach Middle School Jim Moran Foundation Mentoring/ Student Support Program Eagle Point Elementary School Latinos in Action with Cypress Bay Gator Run Elementary School Canine Assisted Therapy King, Jr., Dr. Martin Luther Montessori Academy Title I, Migrant & Special Programs w/ Reading Pals North Fork Elementary School Student Services Mentoring Team Silver Lakes Middle School Teachers as Mentors 12 Volunteer Services, a part of the Public Information Office, supports and assists school volunteer programs throughout Broward County. He encourages the students and they strive to make him proud. His gentle nature allows the students to feel at ease and secure in asking questions, knowing he is going to listen to them. His daily presence in the classroom is a help to both the teacher and the students. Carolyn Krohn is passionate about public education, working tirelessly to support our school. Whether serving as PTO President or Student Advisory Council member, judging a debate competition or petitioning for a school nurse on campus, she always goes the extra mile. As a champion of Indian Ridge Middle, Ms. Krohn seeks ways to optimize student achievement. She coordinates fundraising for technology, books, and special events for our students and helps ensure that 100% of funds raised by our school stay there. This past year, she initiated grants to Indian Ridge Middle teachers for curriculum materials, working to ensure the best prices and best fit for classroom technology and supplies to meet the needs of students and teachers. Mr. Neering serves as a mentor to many students, especially to boys who need a positive male role model. He spends his time talking with and honestly listening to the students about their personal lives. This is beneficial to the students because it shows them that an adult takes a personal interest in what they do. Another special thing that Mr. Neering does for the students is to find out their interests, using what they tell him as positive reinforcement. He also chaperones all third grade field trips, having fun with students and giving them an opportunity to see him in a different, “out of school” light. John Neering is truly a remarkable asset to Park Springs Elementary. Carolyn Krohn is also an active proponent of informing and involving parents. She encourages parents to voice opinions on matters that influence their children’s education. In addition, she acts as communication liaison between District and school, serving on both the District and Central Area Advisory Committees. Under her leadership and advocacy, a motion was recently raised to place a school nurse in every District school. Her involvement has positively impacted not only Indian Ridge Middle, but the District as a whole. 14 OUTSTANDING STUDENT VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR OUTSTANDING PROGRAM ORGANIZER VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR AVA REESE SKLAR Cheree Liebowitz Virginia Shuman Young Montessori Magnet Elementary School Beachside Montessori Village Ava Reese Sklar is an exemplary student whose achievements have brought her notable accolades. Her academic work has earned straight A’s. As an ambitious, well-rounded student, Ava has been elected this year as Virginia S. Young Montessori Magnet Elementary’s student council president and serves as a peer mediator, a member of the safety patrol, and a news crew member for ITV. She was also chosen to participate this year in the Montessori Model United Nations (MMUN) and will travel to the United Nations in New York City, representing Virginia S. Young Montessori Magnet Elementary among a number of other schools from across the country. Cheree Liebowitz’s impact on Beachside Montessori Village (BMV) goes far beyond her role as School Advisory Forum (SAF) chair to include implementation of some very special programs. Her contributions over the past five years have directly affected student achievement and the school’s advancement. Ms. Liebowitz created the “Parent University at BMV,” a program that enhances the school’s monthly School Advisory Council (SAC) meetings with speakers who discuss various topics aligned with our school improvement plan. These topics include getting the most from parent/teacher conferences, raising a resilient child, and cyberbullying. This program not only increased attendance at SAC meetings, but also serves as a resource for parents striving to make the most of their children’s education. Ms. Sklar’s accomplishments do not stop in school. She created Ava Claus and Friends, a philanthropic organization which collects donations for hospitalbound children in the community. Ms. Liebowitz also envisioned and spearheaded the school’s innovative Enrichment Clubs. Due to Beachside Montessori Village’s longer school day, many students cannot participate in extracurricular activities. Through a partnership with Broward companies, students in Pre-K through middle school are able to take robotics, engineering, chess, Spanish, tennis, and basketball before and after school. Approximately 100 students take advantage of these opportunities each year. Other Broward schools have duplicated this model which has positively impacted student achievement in STEM, languages, and athletics and made students more excited about school. Ms. Sklar’s success at Virginia S. Young Montessori Magnet Elementary and in life is due to self-motivation, a thirst for learning and a strong supportive family. In Montessori we talk about the “whole child.” Ava is a solid representative of all the areas needed to be a successful student and an asset to our school. 15 OUTSTANDING SENIOR VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR Park Springs Elemen tary School would like to Congra tulate our Outstanding Ad ult Volunteer-Elementa ry Level Winner Carol Plask Mr. John Neering Hollywood Hills Elementary Thank you for all of your hard work and dedicatio n! Carol Plask is a highly-valued volunteer who has supported Hollywood Hills Elementary for the past four years. Her diligence, energy and passion enable children to become successful learners. She assists teachers and students in primary classrooms, usually four to five days each week, working with small groups as well as individual students in all areas of the curriculum. Her dedication is remarkable and her flexibility in assisting wherever needed has been an invaluable asset to our school. Congratulations Shamila Hanooman! Ms. Plask helps students with assignments and works with them in groups on reading, writing and math skills. She listens to individual students read aloud, developing both their reading fluency and expression, in her daily “book club.” Due to her amazing ability to establish rapport, students feel comfortable working with and talking to her. She lends a listening ear to those who need to talk about a concern and her gentle demeanor helps students feel heard and understood. Oa k Ms. Plask provides just the right amount of encouragement to help these little ones succeed. She serves as an excellent role model for students as someone who believes that one person can make a difference. 16 e Eleme n ir dg y tar Thanks for all that you do! Elementary School Schools and District departments may nominate their outstanding business and community partners for the Partnership of the Year Award. A selection committee is established that generally consists of members of the Partners In Education Board of Directors and District staff. A set of criteria is established and each application is judged on the criteria and not in relation to each other. Criteria include: level of commitment; demonstrated support for school improvement and student achievement; and effective use of resources that provide meaningful program activities. The descriptions of our outstanding Partnerships of the Year allow only a small glimpse into the innovative and generous programs provided to schools and students by our business and community partners. It is apparent that these distinguished partners give not only much needed financial and material resources, but also contribute their personal and collective skills and expertise, experiences and hands-on assistance. The School-Based Partnership of the Year awards are supported by Partners in Education, Inc. The mission of Partners In Education, Inc. (PIE) is to strengthen and enhance public education in Broward County Public Schools through the development of business and community Partnerships. For 32 years, PIE has recruited and nurtured business/community partnerships that have donated time, expertise and financial resources to schools. The District’s partners help students understand how academic learning is used in the workplace. They purchase books, school supplies, clothing and food for disadvantaged students and their families. They tutor and mentor students during the school day or serve as pen pals to assist with writing skills. Over the past year, District partnerships provided approximately $5 million in added resources to schools, including volunteer time, in-kind and cash contributions. Since 1999, PIE was a part of the Parents, Business & Community Partnerships division in the Public Information Office, and as of 2013 PIE is now a part of the Performance Management department. However, it continues its 501C3, not-for-profit status with a Board of Directors representing business, government, community and the District. Our hearty congratulations and thank you to each of the Partnership of the Year Recipients and Nominees. The CSC collaborates closely with BCPS administrators, teachers and staff to co-create well-being in our students, schools and community by providing a number of initiatives and activities including: SCHOOL-BASED PARTNERSHIP OF THE YEAR PROJECT-BASED LEARNING AWARD Park Springs Elementary with the YMCA The partnership between the YMCA and Park Springs Elementary has made a tremendous positive impact on our students and school community. This program has been tailored to meet each child’s individual needs through their special program. The students have made academic gains in a curriculum based program. The academic focus of the YMCA utilizes programs that target literature, grammar and science. This curriculum aligns with state standards and enriches the educational experience for all participants. The students have improved socially and they are happy and engaged. The YMCA focuses on positive behavior strategies and teaching students the skills that empower them to communicate their feelings. The children are included with our aftercare program to interact with peers and participate in special events. This program has helped the students develop their academic and social skills. 22 SCHOOL-BASED PARTNERSHIP OF THE YEAR DONATION OF TIME AWARD SCHOOL-BASED PARTNERSHIP OF THE YEAR DONATION OF CASH OR IN-KIND SUPPORT AWARD Hollywood Central Elementary School and the Hollywood Police Department Collins Elementary School with O.R. Colan and Associates Time. That is what the police officers of the Hollywood Police Department have given so generously to the students of Hollywood Central Elementary. O.R. Colan’s partnership with Collins Elementary enhances student achievement of school and District goals through vital support of academic programs and activities; and contributes to the well-being of students by providing for basic needs. Specifically, O.R. Colan provides program materials and student incentives for reading, FCAT Camp, and after-school homework assistance programs. A food and clothing bank, funded by this partner, assists with nutrition/wellness issues. Whether it was Shop With a Cop, delivering of gifts and food over the holidays, GREAT classes, mentoring or reading with our students, the Hollywood Police Department has been an outstanding partnership. The time they have given has truly impacted the students in very positive ways. The children gain a sense of importance. They are so proud that someone, especially a police officer, is on our school campus to see and spend time with them. Not all children have healthy strong role models in their lives. The students see Police Officers as important people so they are also role models for the students. In the time the officers spend with the students they are able to guide them in making positive choices, they give them the opportunity to have a voice; to ask questions and share their thoughts and feelings. There is a special bond that is formed in the time spent with face to face interaction. Collins Elementary has been an A School, ranked #1 in the District and State for schools of similar demographics; and SES Band data rank our students 5th in the state of Florida for math achievement and 31st in Florida for reading, with a 91% FCAT writing score. O.R. Colan Associates is an outstanding partner to Collins Elementary primarily because of Catherine Colan Muth (CEO) who is the partnership liaison. Ms. Muth believes that academic success cannot happen if students lack basic necessities. She also understands that student success is not possible without great teachers and staff; and therefore regularly demonstrates appreciation and support. Catherine Muth is the greatest benefactor of the Annual Collins Academic Awards Banquet, which recognizes high-achieving Collins Elementary students. There is no way to measure the impact the time spent with the Officers of the Hollywood Police Department has on our students. It can only be seen in the way their faces light up when officers arrive to see the students, and that is PRICELESS. 23 SCHOOL-BASED PARTNERSHIP OF THE YEAR NOMINEES Atlantic Technical Center with Auto Tech and Body Attucks Middle School with Attucks Alumni Association Bair Middle School with Orange Bowl Leadership Academy Boulevard Heights Elementary School with Sunshine Child Programs Challenger Elementary School with Horace Mann Coconut Palm Elementary School with Sunshine After School Child Care Coral Glades High School with its Parent Teacher Student Organization Coral Glades High School with Shirley Klein, PA/Coldwell Banker Coral Springs Elementary School with Parkridge Church Coral Springs Elementary School with Publix Super Markets Coral Springs High School with Dunkin’ Donuts Coral Springs Middle School with Papa John’s Coral Springs Middle School with Publix Country Isles Elementary School with Carolina Ale House Cross Creek School with John Knox Village of Florida, Inc.
