LA MÉTROPOLE
PLURIELLE
n the boulevard linking Lille
to Roubaix & Tourcoing,
every building is unique and
is part of
a modern and
eclectic creation. Eclecticism
and dynamism are the key
words when talking about Lille
Metropole.
The old Flemish stock exchange
of Lille (1653) is surrounded
by the cobbled streets of
the “Vieux Lille”, meanwhile
in Roubaix and Tourcoing,
converted factories host now
dynamic businesses as well as
nice lofts... Euralille, the best
spot for modern architecture
in the region contrasts with
f La Piscine à Roubaix
the quiet town of Wambrechies
and its marina, or Marcq-enBaroeul & Wattrelos where
urban activities meet nature
and leisure...
The eclectic identity of this area
combines centenary Flemish
influence with modernity. Iconic
Maisons Folie remind us of Lille
as Europe’s cultural capital
in 2004, and are witnesses of
the cultural development of
the last decade: the reinvented
venues and festivals are at the
crossroads between heritage
and inventiveness.

A SURPRISE AROUND EVERY CORNER !
At At only 80 minutes from London, 1
hour from Paris and 35 minutes from
Brussels, Lille is not only the quiet
neighbour of these illustrious cities. On
the contrary, the city proudly cultivates
and displays its singularity! Flemish,
Burgundian and then Spanish before
becoming French, Lille has an outstanding architectural heritage. Known as
a trading place since the Middle Ages,
Lille became a citadel under Louis XIV,
a hive exposant of industry during the
19th century and a city of ambition during the 20th century. The Lille of today
is a conjunction of past and future, a

mix of
and modernity of which
PLURIELLE
the Euralille area is a symbol through
its architectural audacity, as well as
the popular Lille Sud district which has
become a fashion district for young designers.

Lille was European Capital of Culture
in 2004, and has kept a strong memory
and expertise from that time. Through
the lille3000 bi-annual festival, Lille
looks towards the future by welcoming
and being transformed by contemporary creations and cultures from all over
the world. From the Fine Arts Museum
to the Opera, from ballets to concerts
and galleries, culture is part of everyday life in Lille. Lille, as the capital of
the Nord - Pas de Calais Region, is also
proud of festive traditions and of a gastronomy of its own. Lille is the right size
for easy living, and Northerners’ generous and warm nature make visitors
feel welcome. All year round people are
delighted by this unique complementarity of Flemish traditions and French
“art de vivre”, Flemish joviality and
French elegance!

rmentières, located close to major crossroads and railway lines,
is also very near from Lille. Armentières and the surroundings definitely have a rich and multifaceted
countryside, crossed by the Lys river
since thousands of years. By the way,
Belgium is not too far: the city is on
the border! Native city of Line Renaud,
alias “Melle from Armentières” and
Dany Boon, Armentières is also proud
of its majestic Belfry, (UNESCO World
Heritage site) warden of traditions.
Armentières, as a strategic cantonment for the Commonwealth sol-
diers, was destroyed (nearly 90%)
during the first World War and was
rebuilt in a neo Flemish and incredible
style. The numerous memorials and
military cemeteries are to be discovered, in remembrance. For the gourmet: discover the fabrication of the typical Flemish waffles in Houplines at
the Waffle Museum or in La Chapelle
d’Armentières at “La bonne gaufre”.
“Les Près du Hem” with a beach and

arcq-en-Baroeul, a green city
at the heart of Lille Metropole
is perfect for walks and relaxation,
with the advantages of urban area
and countryside near Lille. The Hippodrome, a true 30-hectare urban park
and a privileged location for outdoor
activities. 225 trotting and galloping
horse races take place here every
year, spread over 36 meetings. The
footpaths on the banks of the river
Marque go through the city and are
the perfect place for a walk or a jog.
Marcq-en-Baroeul, located at the
entrance of the “Grand Boulevard”
(joining Lille, Roubaix and Tourcoing):
this avenue bordered by majestuous
trees is a like a condensed display of
beautiful architectures from the 20th
century. The “Liaisons Musicales” and
“Contes et Légendes” festivals but
also the “Saint-Vincent d’Automne”
and other concerts, conferences,
shows,… are some of the many going
out ideas throughout the year. The hotels, B & Bs, restaurants and gourmet
eating places offer a quality reception and many different tastes to your

hanks to its cultural diversity,
proud of its industrial past, rich in
innovative initiatives, Roubaix is eager
to be different.
An unusual heritage: refurbished
industrial buildings
In Roubaix, reinventing buildings is a
real form of art! Former textile factories are now used by entrepreneurs,
students, dancers, artists… Including
the former Art deco municipal swimming pool, which has been transformed into an outstanding, unique and
ground-breaking museum dedicated
to art, industry and textile collections.
The quality of this unusual heritage
gained Roubaix the prestigious “City
of Art and History” (2001) label but
the city is also known to be the cradle
of Mail Order and retail industries.
Creativity and fashion are at the heart
of Roubaix’s DNA with, at its core,
the development of textiles factories throughout the 19th century and,
nowadays, numerous factory shops.
This textile history can be discovered
at the Manufacture des Flandres, a
workshop museum, dedicated to tex-
tile from the past activities to the today’s concepts of creativity. The city
keeps bringing back the textile fibre to
life.
A new shopping destination: Fashion
and bargains
Factory shops and fashion boutiques
definitely provide a different and attractive shopping experience. The
most famous brands as well as original
fashion designers and cutting-edge
fashion have transformed Roubaix in
a genuine shopping reference for everyone who loves creativity, fashion and
bargains.
Outstanding accommodations and
restaurants for alternative short
stays
The daring and off-beat city is full of
character and home to very special
locations, ideal for a special weekend: sleep in a bubble or in a ancient
monument, go to a show in a former
garage… Discover a vast range of outstanding places that you couldn’t find
anywhere else…

However, the most recent, Pheasant

of the Battle of Fromelles depicts in

battle (19 and 20 July 1916).
But the Weppes are also a real large-
scale public garden, on the outskirts
of Lille, where you can stroll around
fishing ponds, through picturesque
villages and farms (many hiking and
cycling trails) and discover local products. An architectural heritage, largely rebuilt in the 1920’s, is to be found
in cities and villages.
Not to be missed : Ste Marie Madeleine church, in Englos, dates from the
11th century and has been presenting
painted walls since the 15th century.
Enjoy leisure activities at the Parc de
la Deûle (Relais nature, Ansereuilles,

or may be by having a microlight tour,
by fishing, hiking trails, or discovering
other sports facilities.

riginally created from the combination of 3 villages , Villeneuve
d’Ascq has been developing since 1970
and has quickly turned into a new and
vast city. Technological innovation
and environment are all important in
the city, which smartly combines 6
lakes, commercial activities, research
centres and residential areas.
The city has been built not only integrating nature and parks, as the
Marchenelles Hill, but also boasting museums, like the prestigious
LaM and its 3 collections (modern
art, contemporary art and art brut),
a national performing art scene “La
Rose des Vents” and the “Maison Folie Ferme d’En Haut” created in 2004
when Lille was European Capital of
Culture. Villeneuve d’Ascq is also a
place for sports and leisure (Lille
Metropole Stadium and the Pierre
Mauroy Stadium) and for technology (two universities, laboratories and
the “Parc Scientifique Européen de la
Haute Borne”. Thus, the city is known
as a centre for innovation: the first
automatic metro in the world was invented here.

“Ruban du Patrimoine” for the quality of its restoration (2005), or the
Sainte-Thérèse church, one of the
best examples of Art deco churches
from the interwar period. The Museum of Popular Arts and Traditions,
settled in an ancient traditional farm,
was imagined as a journey to the every
day life in the area in the 19th century, and The “Parc du Lion” is the perfect playground for families thanks to
the children’s areas: miniature golf,

equipments.
Do not hesitate to follow the paths

Marcq-en-Barœul
For more than 30 years, craftmen have
been working at the « Septentrion », in
the old «ferme des Marguerites»: twenty
of them, from antique dealers to a tapestry-maker, bring life to the « Septentrion Art professions Village» all year
round. Art et nature meet in this green
area (60 hectares), decorated with sculptures. Silver lime trees, chestnut trees and
red oaks offer the visitor a marvellous and
wide range of colours throughout the year.
At the heart of the parc of the Fondation
Prouvost, the château du Vert-Bois, displays an impressive architecture, as well
as painting, sculptures, furniture and gold

In the country of festivities and
hospitality, we like to get together around a good table!
Regional food is to be found in
the Estaminets, those small
Flemish restaurants where
Carbonnade (small chunks of
beef stewed in beer), Waterzoï (poultry or fish in a creamy
sauce, served with baby vegetables) and Potjevleesch (white
meat terrine in aspic) are was-
hed down with a locally brewed
beer.
For those with a sweet tooth, do
not miss sugar tarts , custard
cream and wafles filled with
cassonade (sugar made from
sugarbeet syrup).
Finally, all good meals are finished off with Genièvre, an eau
de vie made from grains and
flavoured with juniper berries.
