Among the most common causes of feline liver disease is cholangiohepatitis, a condition marked by inflammation of both the liver and the biliary (gall bladder) system. This condition and hepatic lipidosis (fatty liver) combined account for perhaps two-thirds of all feline liver disorders treated at referring hospitals in the USA. Strangely, we don’t see a lot of hepatic lipidosis in New Zealand. The typical signs of cholangeohepatitis include loss of appetite, fever, vomiting, and jaundice (which can cause the white portions of the eye to appear yellow in color). The next day the patient had deteriorated with a subnormal body temperature! This worries me a lot more than fever. When patients are losing the battle their circulation starts to fail and their peripheral temperature drops. We admitted the cat for a drip, radiographs and blood tests. An eight year old neutered male siamese cat, came to see me with a common problem this time of year, he was lethargic and off his food. During the cats breeding season, which starts a month or two before christmas, all the entire male toms are active. This results in frequent fights while they are on the prowl competing to mate with on season females. I'm not sure what they make of desexed cats but they seem to be caught up in the increased fighting activity as well. His temperature was up from the normal 38.5 degrees celsius to over 40.2 degrees. Typically a high temperature indicates an infection (although any widespread tissue damage will do it.) The expected outcome with fever is generally good - it is a normal response to tissue insult/damage by a fairly healthy cat. I prescribed 1. What is normal temperature for a cat? a. 37 C b. 38.5 C c. 38.5 F 2. Cholangiohepatitis is not inflammation of a. pancreas b. Liver c. gall bladder 3. Low temperature is a worse indication than fever. true or false? 4. Cats are prone to Liver infections due to a large duct opening. true or false? Name: ................................. Ph: ...................... 896 Beach Road Papamoa 542 2642 First correct entry drawn wins a bag of Nutro Natural Choice pe ood The Radiographs identified focal gasy intestines, which could be an indication of partial blockage. The bloods were more useful in this case, indicating septic inflammation (i.e. infection) and a problem in the liver. While the possibilities include a tumour of the liver, this pattern is common in cats due to a peculiarity of their anatomy. The bile duct and the pancreatic duct in cats shares a common opening into the duodenum (first portion of the small intestine). This results in a large opening, making cats prone to infection gaining entry from the intestine, which is normally full of bacteria! A condition called “Cholangiohepatitis” (which means inflamed liver and gall bladder). With time these patients often become jaundiced so we were monitoring his progress by watching to see if the whites of his eyes turned yellow. Having a definite diagnosis, I was able to revise the treatment. We had to add another antibiotic and a liver stimulant to the mix and treat for a longer period. To ensure this was working, we retested the liver in 6 days. The specific tests for the Liver were much improved this time, near normal, which reassured us that he was getting better. 2 weeks later, our patient had finished his tablets and was back to his normal self. The 2016 focus for fundraising is to purchase an aluminium covered trailer for the school’s recently acquired minivan.
