The board voted unanimously to make Jeffries county manager during the May 4 commissioners meeting. Jeffries assumed the role of interim county manager in December 2014, following the departure of then-County Manager Tommy Burns. In naming Jeffries county manager, commissioners made an exception to the job description, which states that the county manager must live in Harnett County. Jeffries lives just across the county line in Wake County, but he grew up in Angier and graduated from Harnett Central High School. The Harnett County Board of Commissioners named Paula Kelly Stewart deputy county manager. The board approved a recommendation from County Manager Joseph Jeffries to make Stewart deputy manager during the May commissioners meeting. Stewart was brought in as interim deputy county manager in February following Jeffries’ appointment to interim county manager. Harris & Associates, PA, was held at the Brass Lantern Steak House. More than 40 young (and young at heart) professionals gathered to hear three featured local entrepreneurs speak about their successes during the complimentary dinner. Chamber Vice President and Young Professionals Chair, Russell A. Galvan moderated the event. The featured speakers included Dallas "Bo" Dafford, Sr. of Dafford Funeral Home; Patsy Powell, of Re/Max Signature Realty; and Freddie Williford of Sherry's Bakery (who graciously filled in for Mayor Oscar Harris). The overall sentiments of the evening were to be committed to what you do, to value yours and others time, to strive to do your best at everything you do, employees make your business and “always respect everyone, never take advantage of anyone - you do not know their circumstances”, according to Bo Dafford. Patsy Powell stated she got her best piece of advice from Paul Perry, of Perry Brothers Tire and Service. He told her about relationship selling, which Mrs. Powell explained as “Greet every customer by name, learn something about them and make them feel like the most important customer you have.” Throughout the event there were serious moments and lots of laughter - with many a personal story being told. As all three speakers noted, when you own a "family business" there is no separation of your family and work life. Make sure you are committed to both completely and it will work out. Mr. Freddie Williford said it best when he remarked, “They (work and family) are the same. And I enjoy my work more than anyone!” Chamber Executive Vice President Tammy Williams remarked, “I love the way our featured guests shared their life and hearts with the young adults. I believe everyone in attendance took a nugget home.” At the conclusion of the evening, the audience asked questions that the three speakers fielded with ease and expertise, answering such questions as what kinds of risks had they taken in life; how do they draw the line between family and work; how do we get more young people to become entrepreneurs; and what do young people today need to do to be successful? The Young Professionals thank Mr. Dafford, Mrs. Powell and Mr. Williford for sharing their insights and for being such willing participants in this open discussion with the future of Dunn and the surrounding area. Business After Hours was held at Chicora Golf Club on May 7 for the unveiling of the newly renovated clubhouse. Guests were treated to a "Catering Showcase" from 10 area restaurants and caterers. For everyone's enjoyment, DJ Butch Halpin of Carolina Sounds Entertainment also provided delightful party music. Jeffrey's Florist featured creative tablescapes and floral arrangements. This was a joint event with the Coats, Erwin and Lillington Chambers. Cape Fear Christian Academy went unbeaten in the North Carolina Independent School Athletic Association double-elimination 1-A softball tournament to win the championship Saturday at Campbell’s Amanda Littlejohn Stadium. “A lot of hard work,” said CFCA coach Bill Green. “They were receptive to the foal at hand and stayed focused through the ups and downs.” The ups greatly outnumbered the downs as the Eagles finished the season 22-2 with no losses in its enrollment classification. In the championship game against Lawrence, CFCA won 11-1 in five innings. Previously, they won against the defending 2014 champion in the first game of the Final Four with a score of 12-0, in five innings. Congrats Lady Eagles! (Article courtesy of The Daily Record/photo courtesy of CFCA/Facebook) The kindergarten and first grade students at Harnett Primary School performed a colorful spring concert entitled Teach the World to Sing. This cornucopia of songs took the audience on a trip around the world where they learned about customs, songs, and interests of various countries. Students sang, danced, played drums and maracas, and wore colorful clothing. There were even four creative second grade students that helped with the narration. Sydney Bradham, a first grade student, gave a beautiful solo performance. (Article and photo courtesy of Harnett Primary School) Triton High School students of Jim Currin’s A.P. U.S. Government class participated in the Leaders of Tomorrow program. The students spent a day shadowing Dunn municipal employees to learn the inner workings of local governments. Following the Dunn Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast, students were assigned to follow different town leaders, directors or police officers. The students closed the afternoon with a mock town council meeting.
