Norway, which provides freshly made Norwegian waffles to retail stores. The company
was successful and Stine was named “Female Entrepreneur
of the Year” in 2010. In 2014, Stine sold the company and
moved to the United States and started Norsk Vaffel. She

Baltic Crossing
European folk music is given a youthful twist by
the five members of Baltic Crossing—so named
because whenever the group meets, it requires at
least one member to cross the Baltic Sea. The band
combines Scandinavian fiddles, Northumbrian
bagpipes, guitar, and double bass rhythm in their
highly entertaining, cross cultural shows.

SOLLI-TANGEN
Brothers Didrik and Emil Solli-Tangen from Telemark,
Norway, take the Oslo Hall stage with their 7-piece
orchestra to share their incredible voices and
musical range. Both men are classically trained
opera singers, and their mastery of melodic favorites
from across the centuries captivates audiences.

on RFD-TV,
will be showcasing
her vocal abilities
and talents on the

Visit Telemark!
Discover Telemark
SKIEN
Discover Telemark from the archipelagos at the coast to the ski resorts in the mountains. Telemark is a county of diversity and there is something fun for everyone to experience. We welcome you to come to our booth in Reykavik Hall and
discover Telemark!
A family tradition
Fine
porcelain
Goldsmith has been the family profession for four generations. Visit Master
Goldsmith Jørgen Sando and see his
creations, including specialty silver
and brooches for Bunads. Sando is
a member of “Norges Gullsmedforbund” (directly translated into “The
Norwegian Goldsmith Association”),
founded by great-grandfather Kolbjørn Sando.
Renowned artisans
Porsgrund Porselaensfabrik
(porcelain factory) was
established in 1885. Throughout
the years since, we have been
known for a strong focus on
design, craft, traditions and high
quality. PP has been dedicated
to creating high quality products
with strong designs, from the
finest porcelain. Today, more and
more of our historic designs are
becoming valued collector’s items.
Anlaug Buen is from Tuddal, a small village in the
mountains of Telemark. Growing up in an environment with folk music, rosepainting, art and different
crafts, she is educated in traditional arts, with specialization in textiles. She uses local folk costumes and
old techniques for inspiration to create new outfits.
Jonny Andvik is established both as a printmaker, painter and illustrator. He lives and works
in Telemark, Norway. Andvik’s work has been
exhibited in Norway, America and many parts of
Europe, including London, Stockholm, Gothenburg, Munich and Venice. Andvik is considered
one of the foremost figurative painters of his
generation in Scandinavia. See his works on display in Copenhagen Hall.
Ski-making demonstrations
Morgedal SKI is a company that specialized in making hand-made natural wooden skis. Using time honored traditions,
they work through the whole process from
finding the right tree in the forest to carving the final designs on the finished skis
surface.
At the Telemark booth, you can see Tarjei
Gjelstad, Director of the Norwegian Ski
Museum in Morgedal, making wooden
skis, and you can hear more about the
fantastic story of Sondre Norheim, the
father of modern skiing.

HU Workshop Classes
An important element of Tromsø
Cultural Village is education. No
matter what you see or do during your visit here, the goal is
for you to learn something
new about the unique cultures
celebrated within this hall. One
way to make this happen is
through a variety of workshops,
where the theme is “learning by
doing.” Inside Tromsø Cultural Village, you’ll be invited to do things. Learn
Sami braiding techniques, try your hand at the art of
felting using wool from Norwegian sheep, native flute
making and much more. Try something new, ask a lot
of questions, and be prepared to leave with new skills
and knowledge unique to the experience found here.
ARCTIC FLUTE MAKING: Students will take a
“journey” through the basic native historical use of
wind instruments found in the indigenous folk groups

George C.
Halvorson is
considered a giant in the health
care industry and
is credited with
building Kaiser

into the nation’s
largest managed
care company and hospital system in
his tenure as its chief executive. He has
more than 30 years of health care management experience, including positions
in his native Minnesota, and now serves
as chair and CEO for The Institute for
InterGroup Understanding and as chair
for the California First 5 Commission
for Children and Families. Halvorson is
of Norwegian descent and a graduate
of Concordia College (MN). Presenting Halvorson’s award will be Concordia
College president emeritus Dr. Paul
Dovre.
Every respectable
kitchen cabinet in
the US contains the
item that brought
Dorothy and the late
H. David Dahlquist
fortune, if not
fame: the Bundt
pan. In 1946 the
Dahlquists founded
a small family business in Minneapolis
manufacturing aluminum products, and
after a request for a pan with a hole in
the center, similar to one used in “the
old country,” David and his brother
Mark developed what became one of
the most recognized shapes in baking.
The story of Nordic Ware is a story of
the American Dream -- and of a family carrying on a legacy. Dorothy is of
Danish descent and David’s heritage was
Swedish. Presenting the award will be
David Dahlquist, son of the founders
and president of Nordic Ware.
Robert Asp
dreamed of
building a Viking
ship by hand.
Not only did
he do it, but it
eventually sailed
to the land of its
inspiration and
forebears, Norway. Asp’s Hjemkomst” (“homecoming”
in Norwegian) is a full-scale replica of
the Viking ship Gokstad discovered
in a burial mound in Norway in 1880.
Constructed over a period of six years
in Hawley, Minnesota, Hjemkomst is
now on permanent display at The Heritage Hjemkomst Interpretive Center in
Moorhead, Minnesota. Although Asp
died six months after completing his
Hjemkomst, a crew of 12 that included
his three sons and daughter carried out
the builder’s original dream of sailing
Hjemkomst to Norway.

Viking Village
OPEN 10 A.M. TO 8 P.M.
This year, Viking Village has expanded to 50+
Vikings! Explore the Village and be prepared to see
history in a very entertaining way! Walk among the
Vikings, explore their unique crafts, and learn about
life during the 8th-11th centuries.
Hear the clash of swords upon shields in Viking
battles performed by trained warriors, learn about Viking Age blacksmithing, and test your physical endurance and agility with Swedish performers, Telge Glima.
Telge Glima is
back!
Viking Descendants
Make sure to meet Icelandic Viking, Jarl Gunnar Olafsson, a direct
descendant of Viking
king, Harald Hardrada.
Viking battles
See the weapons and
armor of the Viking
Age in action as various battle tactics are
demonstrated by trained warriors. Hear the clash of
swords hitting chainmail or axes against shields. Dare
your favorite Viking to fight with a spear and see if he
survives. Feel free to talk with the Viking warriors and
ask questions. They might even dress you for battle, or
at least a photo opportunity.
Archery
Try your hand at Viking
archery with hand-made
longbows (also for sale).
The longbow of the Viking
Age was nearly as tall as
the person holding it and
required quite an arm to
draw an arrow. Arrowheads
of different shapes served
different purposes.
Merchants
Shop among the Viking
merchants for jewelry,
handcarved woodenware,
handmade glass beads, iron
work, clothing, and more.
Entertaining crowds
around the world, Telge
Glima of Sweden performs old Viking games
of strength and agility!
Cheer on your favorite Viking, all while having a
few laughs.
Blacksmithing
Meet the Viking blacksmiths to see hot iron
forged into different
items used in the Viking
Age. Learn about where
iron came from in Scandinavia and how it could
be formed into helmets,
weapons, hinges, or the
bolts used to build the
greatest ships of their
time. Watch our bell
maker from Sweden and
lock maker from Denmark forge items from
scratch! It is a sight to
behold. Pedro Bedard
will also demonstrate repoussé, the old art of hammering designs in bronze.
Woodwork
Scandinavia was full of trees in the Viking Age
and wood was used for every thing from ship to
shields, to spoons and bowls. Make sure to visit
with master carver, Jay Haavik, from Seattle. He
recently finished carving the entire keel of the Oseberg ship replica in Norway and was back there to
carve a wagon this summer.
